About this house rental
This is a Saturday-to-Saturday vacation rental for two adults only.
The spacious deck of the Downstairs apartment is only a few feet from the water's edge at high tide. The front door, approached from the parking area and gardens, has a small deck with two steps; the sliding glass door on the harbor-side deck is accessed by a ramp.
The sliding glass door opens into the living room area. The living room has a beautiful sliding glass door view of the harbor, and the windows add the head-of-the-harbor view of the mountains. There are two comfortable arm chairs and coffee table, gas fireplace, books, and ROKU TV in the living room, with the kitchen and dining area just beyond.
The small kitchen has a four-burner electric stove, microwave, fridge, and a good variety of pots, pans, dishes, and utensils; cleaning supplies under the sink. There is a small dining table for two in the kitchen area, and the deck has a round picnic table and four comfy chairs if you care to eat outdoors.
The harbor side bedroom has a queen-size bed, two side tables, dresser and closet. The study in the room next to the bedroom has a desk, twin sized bed, dresser and closet.
Being a cozy apartment, it is perfect for a couple.
There is a full bath just a few steps away: all tile; tub and shower. Plenty of fresh bath linens. Supplies you might need are under the vanity.
The deck wraps around the side and front of the house and is shaded part of the day by the Upstairs deck. There are the outdoor table and four chairs, and a grill. It’s a wonderful place for watching the gulls and eagles and other shore birds, the boats coming and going, the fishermen with their lobster boats, and the sunset over Bernard, across the harbor: great opportunities for making some memorable photos.
There is central heat; fans for ventilation if needed; all linens (bed, bath, and kitchen) are provided. Immaculately clean. Lovely decor.
No smoking, no pets, not appropriate for children.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Glad to be on 'the quiet side': Views are beautiful. Bass Harbor has been photographed for the cover of a National Geographic book about New England and has been the site of several movies. The lobster fishing boats are always interesting, and if you love wildlife, eagles soar over the harbor daily. We counted twelve herons in the low tide one September day and have watched loons, ducks, terns, and gulls work the harbor.
Although we're only thirty minutes from Bar Harbor, we are essentially very different. Bass Harbor is a small fishing village and working harbor on the southern end of Mount Desert Island. We're called 'The quiet side of the Island.' There's plenty to do here: The Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, Wonderland and Ship Harbor (part of Acadia National Park) are only a mile or two away. At Little Island Marine, the small boatyard which shares the peninsula with the house, Island Cruises makes nature trips Monday through Saturday, and charters private fishing or sailing trips. Restaurants are within easy walking
distance.

Our third time to little island house. Incredible views, peaceful and beauty all around! When we were there, It was 98 degrees where we live and in Bass Harbor it was in the 50s. We had the fireplace on in July! I am a clean freak! The house is immaculate! Charlene and Jenn are a pleasure and respond quickly with all your questions. We never want to leave. We shall return!

We arrived to find everything ready for us and welcoming. The apartment has everything you could need to be comfortable, to cook at home, to relax, and watch the water, sealife, and boats. We even saw a bald eagle! It is convenient to acadia, the ferry, and several restaurants. We did not need to contact Charlene at all as everything was perfect.
We would definitely rent here again.

This was our 2nd time renting this great house. Small, clean, comfortable. But the location is wonderful with amazing views and the sunsets will knock your socks off! Stunning.

Total enjoyment of this exceptionally clean property. The back deck provides a peaceful waterfront view of the harbor with hours of viewing the birds, boats and tides. Everything we needed was included in each room for a comfortable stay. The decor provided a comfy atmosphere with a New England feel. We enjoyed the beautiful artwork. The bed was so comfortable. Great nights sleep in silence until the sounds of the lobster boats heading out in the early morning hours, which we also enjoyed. Will look forward to returning.

We had a wonderful stay. After adventuring during the day we couldn’t wait to come home and watch the sunsets from the deck. The house was cozy and we had everything we needed. Even the bed was comfortable allowing my tired body a good night’s rest. Staying there was so relaxing. 10/10.

This was the best place we have ever rented. We absolutely loved how close the house was to the water.
Very relaxing to sit on the deck or on chairs in living room viewing the water and lobster boats.
The place was extra tidy and well equipped with everything we needed.

This was our second stay in The Little Island House. I plan on returning. There's nothing more relaxing than having morning coffee on the deck overlooking the harbor. Watching the lobster boats and sea birds.
The rental is comfortable and extremely clean. I adored the crisp white sheets on the bed.

Great house. Immaculate! The kitchen had any tool I needed. Really comfortable beds! Million dollar views. Hiking trails nearby including some within walking distance. It really felt like home to me. 3 minute walk to a restaurant with tasty seafood, good beers and a fabulous staff! Most restful vacation in a very long time.

Wonderful location, excellent accomodations and extremely peaceful. This place is a slice of paradise. We enjoyed watching the boats and tides come in and out. Acaida is short drive away and staying on the "quiet side" was perfect. Thank you.

We had a wonderful time staying at this house on Bass Harbor. The house was spotless and had everything we needed. We could have sat on the front porch all week to watch the activities in the harbor. We were two couples that travel together often and the size of the house was perfect. I would highly recommend staying here.

Location, location! We loved being on the quiet side of the island watching the working harbor from the deck of this exceptional property! Small, but functional apartment with every need accommodated. Remote, but still close to hiking, sight seeing and restaurants. It was a perfect vacation week!

Perfect quiet retreat
This is a great little place! Everything was as we expected and We had everything we needed. The sunset view was amazing. My only suggestion would be to add a hammock to the porch (lol I improvised and napped on the chair cushions).
If you wand touristy bar harbor- this is not it. We loved being away from the hustle and bustle and didn't mind a short drive to explore or grab dinner.

All we hoped for
This property was exceptionally well suited to our needs. The waterside location overlooking the working harbor was amazing. While there we took in the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, the iconic lighthouse of Acadia, as well as the coastal portions of Acadia National park adjoining it. These were beautiful and much less crowded. The Nature cruise that left from the pier next to the house was also great! The property itself was clean and comfortable. Charlotte was accessible and a great host. Highly recommended!!

Didn't want to leave
The pictures don't do this house justice. It is bright and welcoming. Looks like the walls were just painted. I felt like I was coming home after a long, busy day. Comfortable chairs. Very comfortable bed. The best is sitting on the deck watching life on the harbor. I WILL r4eturn

Hidden Gem
Two years ago we were vacationing in Maine and stumbled upon this house with a vacation rental sign. We knew our next vacation must be there, and lucked into a rental week this year. Watching the tides go in and out, the fog roll in, the spectacular sunsets and the lobster boats snug in the harbor at night were exactly what we had hoped for. The rental is also spotless and we enjoyed the beautiful garden and busy bees. It's close to Acadia, where we visited almost daily, but I would have loved another week just enjoying the fishing village. We also highly recommend the boat tour which sets off right from the dock.

Quiet paradise near all of Mt. Desert's offerings
What a great visit we had to this idyllic cottage in Bass Harbor. When you first pull up, the beautiful rose garden will take your breath away. The apartment is incredibly clean and well-equipped. We had everything we needed including fans, beach chairs, and basic staples in the kitchen.
I was worried that the harbor would be smelly or noisy, but it was neither. We spent as much time as we could on the porch, just soaking up the sites and sounds. There was a newly installed gas fireplace that was great on the nights when temps dipped below 55 degrees (we also had no trouble kicking on the heat).
It took us about 35 minutes to get to Bar Harbor, but only about 10 minutes to lovely Southwest Harbor and great restaurants. We walked to Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse, which was great fun, and we even took the nature cruise that leaves from the dock next to the cottage and it was beautiful..

Perfection in Bass Harbor
We had a wonderful week in Bass Harbor, Charlene’s house was perfection….exactly as described. It was impeccably clean, well supplied, and the views of the harbor were fabulous. I can’t wait to return!

Great host and property
Beautiful view on Bass Harbor during the full moon. Very clean and comfortable for two; you would want to know the other two well, if you were to rent this for a week with four adults. Charlene is a terrific host.

Beautiful house for couple or two friends
This property is amazing. It is right on the water with a truly spectacular view. The kitchen is quite small but functional with all the cookware you would need. I loved the working fireplace. It is a small house, so even though there are two bedrooms, I think it would be too small for two couples. You can walk to a restaurant and a lobster pound for the freshest lobsters you could possibly get. Easy drive to many hikes and the cute towns of Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor. Would highly recommend taking the mail boat to Great Cranberry Island! My friend and I absolutely loved it!

Nice house
My husband and I stayed at the lower level of the house for a week. It is cozy and very clean. There is everything you need for your stay, from bathroom to kitchen. We really enjoyed. Thanks for sharing your house!

Covid Ready
This was a wonderful location...a true working harbor in Maine. Morning activity and sunsets were terrific! The owner had deep cleaning protocols in place and my husband & I left very safe. In addition Everything we needed to cook or bake or clean with was fully supplied. We often bring our own items to rentals but I never took them out of the storage box. We've rented often on Mt. Desert, and this was not the biggest, but it was one of the best! We hope to return next year. Highly recommend Little Island House !!!

Our week stay in Bass Harbor was a true delight. Charlene’s apartment was perfect in every aspect. The location not only convenient to Acadia national park where we spent each day either hiking or biking but has a gorgeous view of the harbor The apartment is surrounded on 3 sides by water It was so delightful to watch the low & high tides come & go each day, the numerous boats & the bird life We’ve been actively using Airbnb & Vrbo for 5 years since retirement This apartment lacked for nothing. When I’d think there was an item that hadn’t been provided, it would be found. We prepared all our meals & every utensil & items needed was there Charlene was extremely helpful when we had a question. We only emailed throughout the week but did meet as we were leaving. She’s such a delightful host & close to apartment if needed We would definitely rent this apartment again which we hope to do next September

Cruise ship feel to the home at high tide!
Our week in Sept was wonderful at Charlene’s home on the cove! We were in the downstairs apartment which was clean, organized and equipped. The views were relaxing, the fireplace a plus, and location perfect for hiking and kayaking on the quiet side. Kitchen is small with an apartment sized stove and no dishwasher which we didn’t mind. Noise from upstairs can be heard at different times but not a deal breaker. Bed was getting older but still comfy, shower was great! We would love to return sometime! Thank you!
