About this cottage rental
Sapphire Blue Cottage on Mahalas Lane with a weekly rental schedule of Saturday to Saturday.
Maximum number of guests - eight - with a weekly rental schedule of Saturday to Saturday.
Located in Owls Head, this quaint and unique 1930s cottage is nestled near the end of a private lane. A guest of the cottage, the author, Marianne Cushing, has had published (December 2013) her debut novel, Mahalas Lane (the lane of the cottage and hence our address), which uses the cottage as a point of reference for her investigation-romance work of art. Overlooking Crocketts Beach and Penobscot Bay, Mahalas Lane is serene and relaxing, a true seaside get-away.
Crocketts Beach, when the tide is out a bit, is a perfectly sandy beach all the way out into the water. Children, less fragile than adults, do not seem to mind at all the refreshing aspects of the Maine water, and enjoy the swimming without having to negotiate bothersome rocks with their feet. (Adults seem to appreciate this pleasing aspect as well.)
Crocketts Beach is especially well-suited for kayaking and provides for a nice ability to explore, by kayak, Little Island (a very small island about 1/4 mile off the beach which you can almost walk to at low tide), nearby Crescent Beach, Ash Island and Sheep Island. There are really only about three other cottages-homes on Crocketts Beach, thus the beach is private and unique in that sense as well.
On the south side of the property line landscape by the beach house, there is a walking path that runs through the trees along the south side of the beach house down to the shoreline that residents of the lane have used and are and have been permitted to use for at least going over the past 86 years.
Any other non-guest foot traffic to the shoreline through the cottage property is not permitted. The cottage provides for our guests its own private access to the shoreline from its own private cottage property grounds which run to and meet the shoreline, the perspective of which is captured in the accompanying photographs.
The cottage is architecturally unique, reminiscent of a ship with a bowed front, pristine white ship-lap throughout, a number of small, port-hole windows and a built-in, ship's cabin-like bed.
At the front of the cottage, there is an ample yard and natural gardens surround the house. It is a pleasing space at any time of the day; especially for sitting on the patio for morning coffee and watching the sunrise over the ocean. Then it is also pleasing to stroll down to the ocean-front beach house for an afternoon of reading.
The main house (cottage), approximately 196' from the shoreline, and the beach house, approximately 72' from the shoreline, has three bedrooms which includes two king and two twin Danforth Mission style platform beds from The Bedworks of Maine, a built-in twin-sized bed and, beneath one of the two twin Danforth Mission style platform beds from The Bedworks of Maine, a trundle twin sized bed.
The first upstairs bedroom is an open-space concept with a built-in twin bed that mimics a ship's bunk, a small, port-hole window and two large casement windows that open towards the ocean. Two twin beds, a love-seat sofa and the built-in twin bed described above. This bedroom also provides a trundle twin-sized bed, from The Bedworks of Maine, that is placed beneath one of the two twin beds.
The downstairs and upstairs master bedrooms have Danforth Mission style platform king beds from The Bedworks of Maine and ocean views and adjoining bathrooms.
The well-equipped kitchen has spectacular views of the ocean and opens into the living room and dining room areas, both with ocean views. Windows offer natural light and light sea breezes.
There are two bedrooms upstairs and one full bath. The first bedroom upstairs is an open space bedroom where children and young adults often stay and provides two twin Danforth Mission style platform beds from The Bedworks of Maine, a love-seat sofa and one twin built-in bed that mimics, as mentioned above, a ship's bunk. A twin sized trundle bed is also provided beneath one of the two twin beds. This open space bedroom has a view of the ocean and enjoys ocean breezes and the sound of the ocean striking the shoreline - especially at night when reading a book or falling asleep.
This open space provides the sense of breadth, the flow of both natural light and late-night catching-upwith friends or family, peace, relaxation, wing-span and comfort for the bonding of families and friends.
The second upstairs bedroom, a master bedroom, has a private bath and one Danforth Mission style platform king bed from The Bedworks of Maine with an ocean view with comfortable furnishings
There is also a beach cottage on the property, located at the water’s edge. The guest cottage offers a Danforth queen Mission style platform bed from The Bedworks of Maine, as well as a campaign style desk-table, two slipcovered sitting chairs, a state-of-the-art BioLet 65XL composting commode situated in the beach cottage's exterior closet, an under-counter refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster oven, a flat screen television, cable television, Blu-Ray DVD player and Internet WI-FI, a countertop water dispenser and a spacious deck with a panoramic view of the ocean. This is the perfect place to sit and watch the day come to an end.
The location of Mahalas Lane is ideal. Owls Head is home of the Transportation Museum and the Owls Head Lighthouse where Spot, the Springer spaniel, is buried by the lighthouse bell (see the true story of Lighthouse Dog to the Rescue).
Owls Head is a small, quiet community just minutes from Rockland (the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Primo Restaurant, In Good Company wine bar, Fiore premium Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars and Jess's Market for lobsters and fresh seafood - Down East Magazine's readers' choice for best seafood market in Maine). The General Store in Owls Head offers breakfasts, the famous 7-Napkin Burger and is an authentic, old style general store.
Thomaston, Rockport and Camden are also nearby. Rockport is the setting for the Samoset Resort (the well-appointed La Bella Vita restaurant with a magnificent view of Penobscot Bay, the tranquil, fresh, clean, seaside aesthetic of The Spa and a beautiful seaside, championship golf course) and Maine Sport Outfitters (offering for purchase or rental items for almost any conceivable sporting interest ranging from kayaking, biking and running to camping and winter sports).
These larger cities offer museums, restaurants, shopping, festivals and endless cultural activities. Cape Air flies into (and out of) Owls Head (the Knox County Regional Airport) from Boston (a one hour flight) and other regional locations. Car rentals (Budget) can be made from the Knox County Regional Airport.
The cottage offers a washer and dryer, Bosch dishwasher, hair dryer, hand held clothes steamer, cable television in the cottage and at the beach house and Internet Wi-Fi connection in the cottage and the beach house. The outdoor patio has a Char-Broil 4 burner LP grill.

This was our second time staying at the cottage. It fits the needs of our family as it's quiet and peaceful with a serene beach you can enjoy without crowds. Love this little place!

Our family had a wonderful week in this beautiful location and lovely, charming, well-appointed and equipped cottage home. Views from ocean facing windows were inviting and ever-changing with the tides and weather. On foggy, rainy days, we were cozy, reading and working puzzles inside, and when the sun favored us, we spent hours by the shore. Can't think of a thing we would change about the cottage, the guest house, or our access to the water, the breeze, and the sounds of waves on the beach. Everything we had hoped for and more! Our host was exceptional and attentive to ensuring our enjoyment of our vacation. We're eager to identify a time when we'll be able to return; this will be our Maine vacation destination from now on!

Perfect location. Love Maine!

Spent an amazing week here. The cottage is quaint and its location cannot be beat. Loved waking up to coffee while watching the sunrise over the water and the birds. The older kids loved the fire right in the beach. The property was meticulously landscaped further adding to its charm. Paul was an amazing host and great to deal with. He nailed all the recommendations, especially Jess’s Market for fresh seafood. You can’t go wrong with this place.

My husband and I stayed here for two weeks and had a wonderful time. My sister and three daughters with two of my grandkids were able to join us for part of the time. Everyone totally enjoyed the cottage and the surrounding areas. We have been traveling to Maine for a good 50 years and have rented every kind of house, cottage or cabin there is out there!
Paul’s home was still quaint but had all the conveniences you could ask for! We had a washer and dryer, dishwasher and even two king size beds! All the laundry and cleaning products were provided and we had a never ending supply of paper products. I’ve never rented a place that was more generous.
My 14 year old grandson stayed in the beach house by himself and was elated to have his own space. I found a nearby lobster pound that we visited frequently for fresh lobster at dock prices. We also loved going to Jess’s for fresh haddock and specialty items. Our favorite restaurant was The Happy Clam and my favorite place is Pemaquid Point. Don’t miss them if you get the chance to go there.
I would not hesitate to rent this home again if the opportunity arises. We loved it!

The place was very nice, there were bananas and apples on the table!! Great touch the weather was terrible fog was in and rain but had a nice time!!

The place is very much as depicted in the web site -- cozy, charming, peaceful. It is very convenient to Rockland and there is a short walk in the Ash Point Reserve not more than a minute down the road. Paul was very responsive to requests (the woodpile had been depleted by the prior guest and he was quick to replenish it).

The house was charming and comfortable. We were blessed with about five sunny days…wonderful after coming from a very rainy summer. Disappointed that the house was not actually in a private setting on the water…pictures seemed to indicate a more private and picturesque setting.
Our host bent over backwards to take care of anything that needed to be taken care of…

We had an amazing week in Maine! The location of the home is perfect. The home is cozy with loads of character! Beautiful ocean!!

We really needed a break as a family and this was perfection. Comfortable, unique, charming, and well equipped with quality furniture and a stunning view. Room for some aggressive badminton 😁 followed by a cocktail and beach bonfire. Central location, good shower, great table for dinner and crafting. Our girls loved having upstairs to themselves. Truly a delight.

The home, ocean, and neighborhood are all exquisite and Owl's Head's energy is magical. The home has all the comforts of home and the (practically) private beach is the most fabulous part!

The location is perfect. The yard had room to play. The beach is beautiful, rocky at high tide and sandy at low tide- just like a Maine beach should be. we used the fire pit many times. The beds were super comfortable. Lots of utensils and kitchen gadgets to get meals prepared. It was our second stay and we plan to be back!

We rented this house for four people for a week and loved waking up having coffee by the ocean. The house is has a well equipped kitchen and plenty of cozy space. Paul was super communicative and helpful. Thank you!

Comfortable property, accommodating many guests, well equipped kitchen, linen and toiletries. The location was great for exploring the mid-coast from Booth Bay to Belfast, and beyond. The fire pit area is great for s'mores and stargazing!*

The main house immediately felt like home. We loved the Owls Head
Store. They have delicious pizza, delish hamburgers, and breakfast
sandwiches. The weather the week we were there was damp and foggy. We had only 1 full day of sunshine. We enjoyed sunning on the beach and making a bonfire that evening. The kids planned their hikes
And runs each day. We purchased steamed lobsters and ate on the patio one evening. I read the murder mystery set on the cottage.
The weather was the biggest disappointment. The beach house is a bit farther than I thought, but we had a great time and managed to eat at wonderful restaurant

We realize that this property is old and has limitations as a result, but future renters should be aware that the ceilings are VERY low in this house! My husband and son are both 6’5/6’6 and they repeatedly hit their heads. The floors are wonky & not flat- make you feel as if you’re drunk the whole time. Everything is moist in the house. We realized there was no ac, but they desperately needed several dehumidifiers at the property. The downstairs toilet was always a roll of the dice when flushing. The compost toilet at the beach cottage was FILLED with big spiders - no one was willing to use! The sheets on the beds were piling - think they used to be flannel sheets, but between the moisture from humidity and piling…
The knives in the kitchen were so dull they were dangerous, the screen door was broken and had duct tape on it, two of the four plastic Adirondack chairs down at the beach we’re broken. The blinds in the master downstairs bedroom were not functional because of all the knots in the cords. We didn’t feel that the floors had been moped in ages and the windowsills had bugs and dirt. The owner was very pleasant and easy to deal with but we didn’t bring up all these issues at the time - many of which couldn’t be fixed due to the age of the house.

This is a comfortable, well equipped, private cottage near the end of a dirt road with a water view and access to a private beach. We had a wonderful time kayaking and exploring the area.

This property is wonderful. The location to the water and access to a beach was the best part of the week. The home is lovely and clean! Paul is so nice to work with and really cares about your stay. We had blues sky’s all week and watched amazing fireworks from a neighbor a few doors down. Lobster, sunshine, boating swimming and family. A perfect week!

My entire family loved staying at the cottage in Owl’s Head! Having access to the beach was lovely! The fire pit was great to gather around with the family! We stayed in several nights and made use of the grill and well stocked kitchen. Would definitely stay again!

We all enjoyed the house in Owl's Head and felt well cared for.

Property is good. Location is good. All of us had a good time.
2.5 / 5.0
The house and beach cottage were very well equipped. Nice, thoughtful touches of fresh fruit and flowers. Setting was good affording nice views of sunrises. The only negatives were that some maintenance is required. Particularly the deck and surrounding walkways of the beach cottage. The wood is seriously rotting away and dangerous. In addition, the door to the main house would not close all the way. But overall, we had a wonderful experience.
2.5 / 5.0
The house is cozy, quaint and quite comfortable for 7 adults. There are plenty of seating areas: living room with 3 couches, patio, beach house porch and fire pit on the beach. By far, the ocean view by the fire pit was everyone’s favorite. This was great for sipping morning coffee while relaxing listening to lobster men tend their traps and the waves breaking on the rocks. At low tide there is a beach. For reading, the house has a large collection of Agatha Christie books. While Rockland is a short drive away with plenty of restaurants, we cooked most nights in a well stocked kitchen. Paul is a very responsive host resolving an issue we had very quickly. Overall, everyone had a relaxing time.

Five college friends (45 years ago) spent a week here & we enjoyed every minute. The cottage was quaint & well decorated. It was a short walk to the beach & we enjoyed having a fire one evening. The kitchen is well appointed & had everything we needed when we bought fresh lobster right off the boat in Owls Head. We were close to Rockport, Camden & about 2 hours from Bar Harbor. Birch Point State Park was a quick drive & had amazing views. We contacted the caretaker, he was such a nice man who helped the guys figure out the tv & hooked us up with the lobsterman. The little general store in Owls Head is great, it reopened the weekend we got there. The owner has many of the staples you may need & the cafe is excellent. We brought bkft home twice as well as an evening meal. For a special night out we would recommend Primo. Thanks for making our vacation a little bit extra special.

We were so pleased to find this vacation home in mid-coast Maine. So many small, convenient amenities were provided, from lanterns to take nightly trips down to the shore for stargazing, a lobster pot, crab-crackers and picks for enjoying Maine's sweetest treat, to quality linens, that made our stay so welcoming. It's very clear that this house is loved by the owners and not just invested in as a vacation rental. The living area was so comfortable and cozy. We don't want to say more because we want to return and actually have this property be available!!
