TRY THESE TOP 5 SPOTS TO TAKE A HIKE!
“Take a hike!” is not a very nice thing to say in most circumstances, but where we come from it’s actually terrific advice. With all of the scenic beauty and natural wonders in every direction, Lake County has plenty of places to stretch your legs, and your imagination.
How much? Well, not to brag, but Lake County boasts more than 600,000 acres of public land and 100-plus miles of hiking trails—and pardon the pun, but each one is Clearly Different from the other. You’ll experience some of California’s most stunning landscapes in Lake County, with a variety of views ranging from mountain vistas to endless vines, from open valleys to freshwater shorelines.
Sure, we’re personally partial to all of our trails (and believe each one is worth a visit), but to make it easy on you we’ve gathered the top five spots that trekkers and locals alike say you have to check out. Remember to pack your hiking boots, because you’re going to need them!
Mount Konocti
You know your trail is pretty good when it’s literally the stuff of legend. Mt. Konocti is a 10,000-year old volcano and the site of Lake County’s largest park. While you can see Mt. Konocti from pretty much anywhere in Lake County, you’ll get the best views along the Wright Peak Summit trail. There’s walnut and apple orchards, the amazing Canyon Oak grove, the 117-year old Mary Downen cabin, and even the remains of a small plane which crashed tragically in 1962. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, there’s also access routes for side trips to Buckingham Peak and Howard Peak.
Difficulty: The Wright Peak trail can be kinda strenuous. You’ll gain 1,649-ft. elevation from the trailhead until the Wright Peak summit at 4,299-ft. elevation. It is more than 3 miles (about 3-5 hours, give or take), and there are very steep areas. Food, water, and rest are your friends.
Highland Springs
Hop on a horse, or use your own two feet, whatever your preferred means of transportation, you’ll feel like a cowboy moseying along the 3,200-acre watershed of Highland Springs. While hikers and equestrians have officially enjoyed the area for more than 50 years, the trails were first developed by hunters on horseback more than 130 years ago. Highland Springs still features the same unspoiled, rugged landscape it has for thousands of years, so it’s an absolute must for hiking and horseback riding.
Difficulty: Mostly open range, but there are some steep hillsides here and there. The views are 100% worth it.
Anderson Marsh
Hike through 1,065 acres of natural wonders and thousands of years of California history in the Anderson Marsh state historic park. With a nature reserve preserving a tule march, archaeological sites of the Pomo people, and ranch structures built by Lake County’s early Anglo settlers, Anderson Marsh is like visiting several sites in one. Pack your binoculars too, because Anderson March is also bird lover’s bliss, with 151 species of migratory and resident birds.
Difficulty: The two most popular trails (Cache Creek and McVicar Trail) are easy-peasy. Just make sure you have water. You know the drill.
Middle Creek Nature Area
Ever seen a great blue heron gulp down a bullfrog? Welp, you’re liable to when you hike the Middle Creek Nature Area, which is pretty much like visiting a National Geographic special. Birdwatchers travel from all over the world (even farther than the birds) to visit this major waterfowl migratory route, which is home to several osprey nests and great blue heron rookeries. We must say, these birds have great taste.
Difficulty: Piece of cake, though be sure to pack supplies for a 1-3 hour round trip.
Mendocino National Forest
Mendocino National Forest should be on any National Park fan’s bucket list, and half of its 450,000 acres is in Lake County. All of Mendocino is wonderful, but we’re mighty proud (and very blessed) with the parts of the forest we got. The top spot, literally and figuratively, is the 37,679-acre Snow Mountain Wilderness, which backpackers and horseback riders love for its numerous creeks and landscape covered with chaparral, grasslands, oak woodlands, and deep forests. Although access is remote, you will be rewarded with forty miles of hiking trails in the wilderness area, and you can’t go wrong with any of them. The Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument is also a must-see, and while seeing its entire 330,780 acres is a bit ambitious, a portion extends into the Lake County area.
Difficulty: Not too bad, just be sure to bring plenty of snacks and water.
Picking the best places to hike in Lake County is like finding the best tree in Mendocino National Forest—they’re all pretty great. When you get right down to it, the best recommendation is your own. So plan your next trekking adventure to Lake County and we’ll see ya when ya get here.
P.S.S. Stay safe and be sure to check conditions before heading out for your hike.

Hit the Water!
Clear lake. Photo Roger Coryell.
Nothing ushers in the start of summer like a day on the water. With temps already in the 80’s, Clear Lake is a sunny refuge for Bay Area and North Coast residents fleeing the summer fog, and Central Valley folks in search of lake recreation. Stand up paddle board, rent a boat, or reel in a big one on the large freshwater lake, which is roughly 100 miles from coastal Mendocino, San Francisco and Sacramento, respectively.

It was really nice to rent a house with everything working. We really enjoyed just sitting in the back over looking the lake loved seeing all the wildlife an stargazing was awesome we actually seen the starlink satellite train very cool. For boating the boat lift was amazing to keep the boat outta the afternoon wind
Overall this house was perfect for our family of 5. It’s very easy to communicate with the owner really nice guy thanks Dale

Great house right on waterfront. House has everything you need. Nice lawn outside. Hot tub, grill, TVs, Wi-Fi. Fishing straight from the dock is very convinient, we got some fish! Beautiful view! We enjoyed our stay!

What a lovely location! Right on the lake so much room, beautiful art work though out the home. Large kitchen area, fishing off your very own dock. In fact there were boats coming though to fish by us! The location is ideal to the Clearlake area 20-45 minutes away from everything!
Enjoyed The Saw Place in Kelseyville for a wonderful meal and topped it off at the local Fosters Freeze! We rented a pontoon boat from Disney and had a nice lunch on the water another day! We had a great time and we'd love to come back! The host was easy to access!
Thanks Dale!

Had some friends reach out about wanting to do a last minute getaway for the weekend! Booked the property a few days in advance and Dale (the owner) was very quick with communication and details. The home is a nice size with many stunning views of the lake. The private dock was fantastic for simply chatting with friends on the water. Check in/check out were very quick and easy. Highly recommend staying at this lovely property!

Very relaxing and private. We enjoyed the beautiful furnishings, well stocked and maintained home. The plus was a hot tub with a view and a dock to walk on. Dale was very straight forward, very kind and considerate. Very generous to share his beautiful home. Very nice for weekend or weekday retreats. The locals were very friendly, the fishing and restaurants were excellent. Definitely would go back. Great value.

Relaxing get away to experience nature.
A stay at Dale's lakefront home is exactly the relaxing break we needed. Unbelievable January weather allowed us to even lay out in the sun in the lounge chairs in the lakeside yard. Fabulous views and sunsets and birds on the lake. We had our coffee each morning in the hot tub and watched the sunrise. A very neat and comfy home right on the lake. Highly recommended.

Great stay
Had a wonderful stay at this property. Owner was responsive and friendly when we wanted to book dates that weren’t on the calendar. Property was great! Kids loved the lake and really enjoyed fishing from the dock!! Wonderful weekend, great memories! We will definitely stay again!

Stay here if you’re looking for views and relaxation!
We booked at this Lakehouse as a last minute vacation with another couple, and it did not disappoint! The house was a perfect size, very inviting with tasteful lake decor and the views were outstanding. The pictures in the listing are good representations! Sunsets off the end of the dock we’re unbeatable, and we enjoyed our morning coffee looking out across the water from the hot tub. We took the kayaks out and ended up seeing all sorts of birds and a few rabbits on the shoreline. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything you could need for meals at home and the house is very close to a local supermarket. We took advantage of the fireplace in the evenings after the sun went down and it made for a perfect setting to enjoy some local wine we picked up.

Just what we were looking for.....
This was the perfect getaway for us. A beautiful spot on the lake. We enjoyed one of the most beautiful sunsets we’ve ever seen. The house was spotless and fully furnished with everything we needed.
Very homey with photographs of much of the wildlife we saw while we were here. We will definitely be back. Thanks Dale.

House in Nice, CA on Clearlake
I really do not like to leave negative reviews but this place needs some serious deep cleaning, maintenance, and upgrades. There were cobwebs in corners, we found dirty dishes in the cabinets (had to basically wash every dish and utensil before using it), the carpet should have been replaced a decade ago, the front yard is a jungle, and a raccoon walks by the hot tub at night on his way to the lake. Speaking of the hot tub; the Owner said they used an "ozonator" to keep the water clean (I had to look this one up since I had never seen one before) and - while they can be used for hot tubs - they need regular maintenance to make sure the water stays clean. Since there was no way to tell when the unit had been last maintained (and based on the overall appearance of the home) we decide not to use the hot tub during our stay. Lastly, and IMO, the Owner should not be displaying their personal photos in a rental property-very tacky. In summary, we had planned on staying 9 days but only made it 5 and would have left sooner if we had another place to stay. If you are looking for a place on Clearlake, skip this place and look in Lucerne (or anywhere else).

Cleanliness
Outdoor space and sitting area is extremely dirty and lot of cobwebs etc.
It would make stay better if overall things are clean and neat.

Do not Travel to this area
I would not recommend traveling to this area. There are abandon cars, it is basically in an RV lot. I would not let my fiancé go on a run without me. We were supposed to stay Monday - Saturday and checked out first thing Tuesday morning. We cut our losses and booked a place an hour and 30 minutes away at the Russian river instead. The lake is very dirty as well.

Ray’s family stay
The property is exactly as listed, Dale is a wonderful host and was available anytime that we had questions. We fished from the dock on Sunday and caught 7 nice black bass which was a plus and the kids had a great time in the Jacuzzi . Everything was nice and I had no complaints, Dale even gave us extra time to get packed at the end of our stay. My family will definitely return.
Thanks Dale

Gorgeous view
The house has a wonderful yard which looks out to the lake with beautiful views. The house is a bit older and slightly dated but full of character, and most importantly was clean and comfortable. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Nice back yard, but...
The property is located next to a trailer park, the park is in the back over the 2 lane road. Folks/dogs make early morning and late night noise quite often. To the right is a water station, which didn't bother us much but it looks industrial. To the left is an open lot and it seems the owner of that lot had some beef with our property person, as they arguedat 8:30 am to the point of pushing each other and threatening to call police, woke us up. The lake is as clear as there are people living on Mars. It has weeds growing up to the surface almost to the middle of the lake, getting wrapped on propellers or paddles. Water quality was comparable to a sewer discharge, saw a few large fish floating belly up, likely due to the blooming algae. The lake vie is great though, the backyard is too, but overall I wouldn't come back due to the location and lake quality.

It’s a great house in a superb location on the lake. The dock with boat lift makes it a great rental for boaters.

2nd summer in a row
This was the second summer in a row we stayed at this lake front property. The location is great, and the dock provided very good fishing. The tree-shaded patio allows day outdoor enjoyment. The house is well-appointed, clean and comfortable. The owner is very responsive and a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend this listing.

Great Communication
We were a little worried about the water due to stories we have told over the years. We were surprised to see the lake so clear, we were able to make our 3-4 36” catfish 10’ down right next to the dock every day. Although we were there for boating, the kids enjoyed stopping by to say hi to the fish every morning.
Dale was a extremely caring host, we hope to be able to rent again next summer.

It was a very good retreat for a group of 9 friends who stayed at clear lake. The house was nice.
It was a good weekend get away. The house has what we needed for the weekend. A nice house by the lake and the private dock is also very nice.
It was very beautiful in the morning and during sunset.
The landlord Dale is very responsive. We had a great weekend

Excellent weekend stay.
The home was very clean and comfortable. The backyard and dock are even nicer than what the photos suggest. We caught about 40 fish over 3 days right from the dock. Sunsets were beautiful, very quiet and peaceful. We would definitely stay at this house again.

Fabulous setting. Beautiful lawn and shade trees. Enjoyed my coffee from the hot tub watching the quiet morning sunrises. Just what I needed. Thanks. We will be back.

Beautiful property! Beautiful views!
Had a great time. House was very homie and and had all amenities needed for our stay. Hot tub was awesome! The only negative while we were there... was Clearlake was Not so clear. Lake was very green and not able to swim while there and unfortunately did not have any luck with the fishies but had fun trying. Overall had a wonderful time! Thanks Dale for checking in on us to make sure we needed anything.

Beautiful Lakefront view and a Peaceful Abode
We had a wonderful stay at this Lakefront home. As the pictures suggest, it is right on the lake. The house is very peaceful. Even the stores are easily accessible, just about 0.4 miles far you'd find a Dollar General, Chevron etc. The Sunset view are beautiful and we had a wonderful time taking beautiful pictures. The hot tub was something we enjoyed too.
Everything was great about the stay, except for a little note to Dale. The house surely needs some cleaning, including the linens and specially the kitchen ware. The bathrooms were super clean though :)
All in all it was a great stay. Dale was wonderful in being prompt with his responses and we still can't forget the great views!

Beautiful home and property with all the amenities. Definitely would stay here again
This property was absolutely amazing, it had everything we needed and so much more to make our stay unforgettable! We spent most of our time outback enjoying the beautiful view and weather. This home was perfect inside and out!

Great time despite weather
We were celebrating my husband's 60th birthday. He had all of his family vacations in Glenhaven and wanted to stay on that side of the lake for his birthday. While the weather proved absolutely dreadful, we managed to have a great time in Dale's home. We had everything we needed to enjoy ourselves. The sunroom proved the best spot to sit and look out at the lake when the weather is horrible. The hot tub was a hit. We had a fisherman with us and he said it was great fishing from the lawn and dock. I told Dale about a few little issues and he was very receptive to addressing them for the next visitors which is always good to hear. We would for sure rent this place again.

Great fishing trip
The weather was not great but we enjoyed our trip to this great house. We loved the backyard and couldn't believe how convenient the boat lift was. I caught a 15 lbs catfish from the dock. The house was clean and comfortable. Dale is great to deal with.

nice comfy lake front house.
We had a great time during our weekend stay at the lake front house. The house has all The amentities you need and we caught plenty of fish right off the dock all weekend. Everything worked out great for us and I can't wait to do it again here.

Perfect relaxing getaway -- very private!
My friends and I enjoyed a wonderfully peaceful 3 day, 2 night stay at this property in late October. There were eight adults in all, and we found the property cozy, but spacious enough to sneak off for "me-time" as well. The house sits right on the water with a private pier, which provided stunning views of Clear Lake all day long (if you can wake up for it, be sure to catch the sunrises -- gorgeous!). The house itself is clean and full of kitschy charm that makes you feel like you're visiting Uncle Dale's duck house...it had the right amount of decor to make you feel at home, but wasn't overly cluttered or dusty. The house is a bit old and creaky, which brings a certain character to the property. If you have a self-sufficient, "roll with the punches" type of group though, I think this is probably one of the best values in all of Clear Lake! It's also close to grocery stores, casinos and restaurants, if you want to explore some local flavor. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here, and can't wait to come back. Thanks Dale!

Neighborhood was quiet, the yard was spectacular right on the lake front. The hot tub and kayak was an extra bonus. The house was casual and comfortable, just right for hanging out.
