About this farm stay rental
Welcome to Hillandale! A 6 bedroom, 3 bathroom farmhouse located on 13 acres with a scenic spring-fed pond. A perfect location for family gatherings, large groups attending the many wedding venues nearby, wine tours, bicyclists coming from DC on the W&OD bike trail and more. Originally a 500 acre dairy farm, Hillandale retains the calving barn, smokehouse, spring house and other outbuildings. The original two room stone structure in the center of the house dates to 1774, with additions added on over time. As such, many rooms have very low ceilings and doorways - so tall folks please watch your head! There is access to Franklin Park, and it's hiking trails, bridal path, ballparks, 18 hole disc golf course, and community pool (land that originally belonged to Hillandale) directly across the street. Downtown Purcellville with its shops, restaurants, craft breweries and distillery is minutes away. Purcellville is also the start point of the W&OD Trail, a bike trail that runs all the way to Washington, DC and is formerly a train line that carried dairy from Hillandale to the White House in the 1930s. The surrounding area is home to many wineries, craft breweries and tourist destinations including the Appalachian Trail and Shenandoah River/Shenandoah National Park.
Accommodations: It will comfortably sleep 12 in beds but there is space for more. On the first floor is a newly updated, well stocked kitchen, laundry facilities, a full bathroom, a large living room with TV and sitting area, an adjacent smaller sitting room with original stone fireplace and 2 porches (one screened). Upstairs there are 4 bedrooms with queen beds, 1 bedroom with a twin trundle bed and 1 bedroom with a full or double bed along with 2 newly renovated full bathrooms (1 with a romantic claw foot tub and separate shower and 1 with a jacuzzi tub). There is also a screened in sleeping porch with two twin beds, weather permitting. Large outdoor space (plenty of room for playing catch/frisbee) with a newly constructed 800 square foot stone patio on the back of the house with a built in propane grill and pizza oven, enough seating for 30+ people and a fire pit. Free wifi throughout. Ample parking in driveway.

I was in town for a women's leadership conference and stayed in this VRBO with several others who were attending. We all loved the property and enjoyed sitting outside one evening on the large patio with lights. The check in process was extremely easy and the owner/manager was always very responsive. We had no issues during our stay. I also took a ton of photos and shared them on my social. We also had a complimentary bottle of wine in the refrigerator which was a nice surprise for our group.

We had a wonderful stay at this lovely and comfortable farmhouse for a family wedding in the area. The house was spectacularly clean and well appointed. The back patio was huge and beautiful. There was plenty of parking for our family members and there were fun yard games available, though we didn’t have time to use them. Communication with the owners was spot on. We stayed there during a brutally hot weather weekend and were perfectly comfortable throughout the home due to the individual AC units in every room. I would definitely stay there again.

This property is amazing, and in many ways better than expected. Everything you need to have a comfortable stay is there. The house is charming and has some impressive updating to give you modern amenities with a farmhouse vibe. While we had enough beds for everyone without needing the sleeping porch, a few people opted to stay out there to enjoy the sounds of nature. Truly a great place to stay - many in our group said they would stay again!

Lovely location.

A lovely and unique property, full of character. I wish time had allowed more use of the outside amenities, but we were gone much of the time. It's location to Bear's Den where the ceremony was held, and to Bluemont Station Brewery and Winery, where the after party took place was so convenient. I'm curious as to what the other improvements recently finished and in progress will bring? My guests were thrilled.

By far this was the most wonderful accommodations for a large group or wedding. The host and property were amazing. We loved the area and it was perfect for a wedding gathering. I am hoping to book another trip in the future.

We arrived and spent a nice evening on the beautiful stone patio enjoying a bottle of local wine. Our family arrived the flowing day in preparation of our son’s wedding! There were plenty of cozy bedrooms to choose from and everything was clean and quaint!
Would highly recommend this home
for a family event/getaway! The host was easy to communicate with and responded to my questions promptly! 5

This was a really great place to stay and the owner accommodated all of our needs. We threw a bridal tea party in the kitchen and we also hosted a hair and makeup event the day of the wedding. The farmhouse had all the amenities to take care of our family and the kitchen is well stocked. I would book here again!!

This home hits on all notes. The property is charming and unique, it is very clean and WELL-EQUIPPED! There is not much you need to bring here and we found all the kitchen and bathroom supplies super handy on a busy wedding weekend. Robert was responsive and I'd highly recommend his property anyone looking for a stay in the area.

We rented the Hillandale property because of the location near our son’s wedding. The house turned out to be a wonderful experience unto itself. The kitchen was very well equipped and the bottle of wine in the refrigerator was a very nice touch. We had 8 adults staying there and had plenty of space and enough bedrooms for everyone. The bathrooms were also very well done and large. We were able to use the outdoor pizza oven and that was fun and a first for us. The history of the house made it a special and unique experience. Our only regret is that we didn’t have more time there.

We held a small family reunion and celebration at Hillandale and everything about the weekend was perfect! The outdoor areas were ideal for us to dine together but also break off into small groups. Loved the great blue heron on the pond. Wonderful kitchen. Cozy bedrooms and super bathrooms! Lovely aesthetics! On behalf of my entire family,, I couldn't recommend this venue enough!

Roller-Swanson Wedding
Our daughter’s wedding was supposed to happen in the summer of 2020. We had secured Tranquility Farm for the wedding and had rented Hallandale as a place for us and some of our family to stay. Then COVID hit and we had to postpone the wedding until this year. Both Tranquility Farm and Mr. MacDonald worked with us and we we able to have the wedding last weekend. Tranquility Farm was an awesome place to hold the wedding and Hallandale was a great place for us to relax before and after the event. The house is very much what we expected from the vrbo description and the outdoor area is fantastic. There is also a large park across the road with a frisbee golf course and miles of trails to walk.

A step back in time
What a unique farm house. A rare gem! Everyone in our family just loved this space. Many nooks and crannies, cupboards and rooms that lead to other rooms. Many sweet memories made here.

Historic charm with modern amenities!
Can’t say enough good things about this home. The historic charm of the 1774 house has been beautifully retained with great updates to the bathrooms and kitchens - and a HUGE outdoor patio. We loved our girls weekend at the house and appreciate all of the thoughtful touches of the owners. We will definitely come back!

Family Get together
We loved this house! The back patio was so comfortable and big we ate outside every night. The whole family was comfortable sitting outside (I have 2 sisters that live close by so there were 20 family members in total). Toddlers were safe also.

We had a fantastic stay at the property! We had a wedding party staying at the house and it fit everyone perfectly, with all the necessary amenities we could ask for and more! We would highly recommend a stay here and hope to be able to do so again in the future.

Best rental ever!
Our son got married nearby and we wanted a charming place to house close family and friends. We also needed a large outdoor space as we wanted to have the rehearsal dinner there. This property could not have been more perfect or more charming! The outdoor space easily accommodated 32 guests. The host had cornhole, a hoola hoop and basketball shot game. We set them up in the yard and they were a hit. The large firepit was used late at night for Smores and chit chat. The interior is historic and old but the bathrooms and kitchen are newly updated. They accommodated our late check out so guests with later airport departures didn't have to wait in the terminals. Everything was top notch. I can't recommend Hillandale enough. Just the greatest! Thank you Robert.

Reserved the house because of the amazing looking backyard space and it did not disappoint. We had a really great time having a cook out on the beautiful patio space. The inside of the house was very nice and historic. Plenty of beds for people to sleep in. Would recommend!

Great Getaway
We really enjoyed our stay at your property over the weekend. The outdoor area was beautiful and we spent a lot of time out there. We used the outside sitting areas, lights and firepit. The location was great as it was an easy drive to all the wineries that we visited. We loved the welcome baskets in each room-that was such a nice touch!

Beautiful farmhouse and property
Our group loved the farmhouse and outside area . Everything was exactly as described and we couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend a long relaxing weekend. The patio/grill/fire pit area was amazing and the house was very updated for how old and historic it feels. Would love to visit the farmhouse again

Wonderful Family Friendly Property that has everything!
Everyone who stayed at this property or came to visit for our joint 70th birthday bash loved the place. It was just perfect for our large family to enjoy each other's company for a long weekend, while still giving everyone their own room and bed. This was fairly hard to find and with older folks and families with younger kids, individual rooms is a must! The property really is livable with all sorts of helpful things. Just a handful of items that we used: a big mobile speaker to enjoy on the huge patio, the massive fire pit, all the outdoor chairs, the fireplace. The kitchen supplies really came in handy: coffee maker, grinder, and beans, tea, spices, large platters for serving up grilled food, grilling utensils, a broom, twine, buckets, I could go on! The yard is so green with lots of flowers and plants, even in early spring and was a beautiful backdrop for our get together. The pond was a beautiful site especially from the upstairs screen in porch. There was plenty of space for the kids to roam around and not too much for them to get into inside. The owners were most helpful, flexible, and I really feel the listing is very accurate. I didn't want a brand new mansion style house that feels cold and dull and this house had plenty of interesting tid bits. Highly recommend!

7 women, who have been in a book club for 13 years drive to Hillandale for a girl’s weekend. We had a 1:30 reservation for a tasting at Bluemont Vineyard. Spectacular setting and views. We received a note from Robert the owner to let us know that the farm was ready. We pulled into the driveway and walked inside to A home that had all of the charm of an Antique home, but with all of the modern conveniences. The most fun was trying to figure out who would sleep in which bedrooms. As we kept finding more! There was also a sleeping porch with two twin beds which were actually used both nights! There were thoughtful touches throughout. A bottle of wine upon arrival. Snack baskets in each bedroom. Tons of blankets in closets. We loved that we didn’t have to bring our own lines as we always have to do when we have rented houses at the beach. The backyard patio area was amazing. And although we didn’t use the pizza oven, we did make a large fire in the pit and used the outdoor heaters. The weather was so nice for November, we ate breakfast outside. The setting is gorgeous.Other activities:We had dinner at the West End bar and pub. Lovely restaurant in an old house. We had a great table outside with heaters. Food and service was great. We went to take a short hike at Bear’s Den overlook. When we arrived, at around 10:30, tre parking lot was beyond full. We did find out that is you drove up trees road about 2 miles there is another entrance that takes you close to the summit. Another breathtaking view.We found that there were virtually no Uber’s or lifts available so we asked the Manager at the West End if there was anyone to drive us around. She recommended Asa at Road yachts. Best decision we made as our car drivers did not want to have to be “designated.” He picked us up at 12:45 and first drove us to Magnolia’s at the Mill for a fun lunch. We next drove us to Twin Farms Vineyard. And while we can’t really recommend the wine, it was another beautiful setting. Our last stop was at Otium Cellars which is on the same road as Hillandale. Loved it?We had a great and wonderful time an hour from Washington, DC

Quintessential Farmhouse Stay with Modern Necessities
We had a wonderful Fall/Halloween weekend at this property. The home has all the charm of a quaint farmhouse with all the modern conveniences in the bathrooms and kitchen. Incredibly well stocked kitchen and comfortable beds/linens. We enjoyed the pizza oven (with all it's provided tools), the fire pit and most of all the great green grass for lots of football games. The patio is pure comfort. There's a spot for everyone to enjoy the outdoors; we had games, picnics, outside movies, pumpkin carving, weenie roast and lots of good wine. Just a great place for a quick escape.

So serene
The property was splendid- inside and out. We loved the little details inside the home - welcome snack baskets, a bottle of local wine to a well-stocked gourmet kitchen. Our family especially enjoyed the outdoor patio with dining area and pizza oven. We spent a lot of time outdoors. We enjoyed taking morning walks on the farm, viewing the vast beautiful landscape. It was just divine!

Military friends reunion.
Four couples that reunite at least once a year in a different location joined at Hillandale Farm to share the Fall colors and quaint towns of scenic Virginia. We enjoyed and were intrigued with the history and character of the farmhouse. Our stay was memorable despite three days of rain!
