WELCOME TO SPOON LAKE
Walk out the door to 2 kayaks or canoe & listen to the loons sing their greetings on this quiet, serene mountain-surrounded lake. Most summers, we love watching rare mating pairs of loons that nest on the far side of the lake. There are only about 80 mating pairs in the entire state of Montana. Sadly, in the summer of 2020 neither of the eggs laid survived due to bald eagles, but that's the 'circle of life'. Summer of 2021, we understand there were new loons that occupied the lake w/ no nesting evident. Summer of 2022, we observed up to 7 here on various occasions looking for a mate. There was lots of chasing happening. Summer of 2023 there was also no successful hatching of loon chicks. Bird lovers may also hear both Pileated Woodpeckers, Stellar Jays, Northern Flickers, Robins, Mallard Ducks, Canadian Geese, & we have seen Trumpeter Swans that graced us with their visit in May & June 2021, 2022 & 2023 plus brief fall stopovers. Enjoy hummingbirds & keep an eye out for those Bald Eagles & Osprey that often battle each other in the skies over the lake. Seeing them dive or swoop down into the water for a fish is a rare & exhilarating thrill. We have seen numerous muskrats & a few beaver sightings.
We are adjacent to Glacier National Park & surrounded by the Flathead National Forest. Always be vigilant for other wild animals like bear, mountain lions, coyotes, wolves, moose & deer at all times. We recommend you hike w/ Bear Spray. We DO NOT guarantee any of the leftover cannisters you may find in the bathroom top shelf, if any. It can be rented in Apgar inside the park.
If timing is right, huckleberries may be found on the property or nearby woods. If you're lucky, Jo may provide you with some fresh huckleberry muffins or the like. Enjoy the BBQ & outdoor eating options overlooking the lake. If you prefer, please enjoy eating at the picnic table & play badminton in the meadow. Enjoy a refreshing swim off the private floating dock. PLEASE NO DIVING because it's too shallow!!! The barge w/ the trolling motor is for the OWNERS ONLY. Spoon Lake features glacier-fed, underground springs gurgling up in the far, left end of the lake, easily explored w/ the kayaks or canoe, but be respectful of temporary late spring/early summer buoys straight across the lake denoting sensitive nesting areas for our much-loved loons. It will tell you to stay outside the buoys for loon protection. Keep an eye out for moose or other wildlife. Summer of 2021, we were thrilled to see a moose cow & her calf for over an hour strolling the lakeshore & swimming across from right to left where the marshy vegetation must be inviting. It was over 100 degrees that day.
When you are ready to explore the vast million-acre Glacier National Park you are only 20 minutes from the West Glacier gate. Take the shortcut across Blankenship Bridge where the legendary North Fork & Middle Fork of the Flathead River meet. Explore some of Montana's finest fishing holes & whitewater rivers, or hike Glacier Park's magnificent peaks, waterfalls & glacial valleys in God's Country. Historic Polebridge is 29 miles up the North Fork Road (Hwy 486) past Lake Drive which is also the gateway to the North Fork GNP entry. You can also access GNP at the Camas Road entry half up to Polebridge which is a backdoor entrance to Apgar Village. The full spring opening & fall closing of the Going to the Sun Road (GTTSR) varies every year depending on the park service maintenance crews snow clearing efforts.
Some kind of park pass is required to enter any part of GNP, but as of the summer of 2024, the GNP vehicle reservation system is also in effect at park entrances at Apgar on the west side of Going to the Sun Road, at Polebridge and Many Glacier. This year only a park pass without the additional entry RSVP is needed to enter Going to the Sun Road at St Mary's on the east side and at Two Medicine. VERY IMPORTANT you visit the GNP website for reservation details to access the park & view road conditions. You MUST HAVE BOTH a park pass PLUS a vehicle reservation to enter the park where noted. As you will read, there are other ways to secure access if you reserve a campground, reserve a boat trip or horseback ride, rent a boat or kayak, etc. PLEASE REVIEW CAREFULLY.
We also HIGHLY recommend that you reserve a vehicle rental in advance. If you can't find a rental at the airport various auto dealers may be leasing cars & the Turo.com website offering privately rented vehicles to fill the void.
Many other exciting opportunities await you throughout the Flathead Valley & beyond. Explore trendy Whitefish boutiques & restaurants, the Whitefish Lake Lodge Resort Marina, providing watercraft rentals of all kinds PLUS the lakefront Tiki Bar & Grill, & the Whitefish Resort at Big Mountain for summer gondola rides & mountain biking. Bigfork art galleries, summer playhouse or Flathead Lake activities are only 30 minutes south. Some of our guests have hired fishing guides on Flathead Lake & it's a beautiful drive around Flathead Lake especially during cherry picking season in July.
We are 8.5 miles north of casual, laid-back Columbia Falls featuring the Three Forks Grille, the Gunsight Bar & Grill that includes outdoor picnic style seating with frequent live music, the new Monaco Steak House & Sports Bar, Up Town Hearth, Vaqueros, the Nite Owl & their Back Room Diner for dinner. Other eateries are scattered in Columbia Falls & from West Glacier to Whitefish. The Isaak Walton Inn & the Belton Chalet are historic sites with some fine dining & drinking establishments worth considering. Everyone loves Montana Coffee Traders or any number of coffee huts. We especially like the baristas at Friske Bean next to the Columbia Nursery on Hwy 2. You can find Smith's Grocery store on Nucleus in the original downtown of Columbia Falls, closest to us & Super 1 out on the hwy.
When your day is done exploring this magnificent part of Montana, our guests always say chilling at Spoon Lake is the perfect way to relax & reflect on your adventures, especially if you enjoy a steam shower or an outdoor hot tub.
We hope you will make wonderful memories at Spoon Lake just as we have. There have been a number of folks who are repeat visitors, especially honeymooners. One of our guests will be back for the 5th year in a row this summer.

We absolutely LOVED our stay. Probably the best hosts we have ever had. The property is gorgeous and incredibly clean upon arrival. A quick short cut to Glacier National Park was awesome! We enjoyed the hot tub almost every night with a spectacular view. Very personal touches to the cabin. Jo made delicious huckleberry muffins and had bathrobes she made hanging in closet for our use when we went in the hot tub!!! Cozy and perfect. Cant wait to come back. Miss u already Ed & Jo !!!

My husband and I wanted to explore Glacier National Park but be off the beaten path. Ed and Jo have the perfect retreat. It's only about 25 minutes from the west entrance (there's a shortcut) and away from all the crowds at Glacier. We hiked quite a bit and to come "home" to a quiet spot on Spoon Lake was perfect. We used the hot tub first thing in the morning with our coffee and last thing at night with a glass of wine. We had a great nights rest with the loons waking us up with their calls each morning. There's a canoe and kayaks for paddling around the lake and so many other amenities to keep you busy you really didn't need to leave the place. However, Montana is for exploring and we did just that. We were 20 minutes to the cute town of Columbia Falls with many different restaurants to chose from. Our favorites were Backslope Brewing, Laurie's Deli, and Josephine's Speakeasy. Glacier was breathtaking however the parking was not easy even with a parking pass and day pass. You need to get up very early to find a spot especially at Logan's Pass. However the drive on Going to the Sun Road was spectacular. We also drove 2 1/2 hours to Many Glacier and back in one day. Very doable and again you have the perfect place when you get home after a long drive. Ed and Jo gave us many good tips and we were even fortunate to taste her delectable Huckleberry Cookies.......so good!!!! I would highly recommend staying here.

A week at Glacier was on our bucket list and it didn’t disappoint. And it was only made better by this wonderful place. It had everything we needed and then some! Ed and Jo were fantastic hosts. And waking up each morning to the tranquil lake view was rejuvenating. And to think we almost booked an extended stay hotel before finding this gem. Don’t hesitate!

My husband and I came to hike Glacier for our anniversary and this property and the hosts could not have been more perfect! Everything was clean, well stocked and lovely. The lake is beautiful and so quiet and relaxing! All of the recommendations and ideas were so helpful and appreciated. You guys are just the sweetest couple and your place is perfect. We WILL be back. Thank you for a trip we will always remember!

Lovely set-up! We especially enjoyed kayaking and fishing on the lake, while listening to the loons. They have put much thought into everything and I’m amazed at how well-stocked the cabin is. Just to name a few…fishing rods, books, games, wonderful shower, and even a Kitchen Aid mixer!

Our time at Spoon Lake was absolutely amazing! The peacefulness of being right on this secluded lake was truly magical, and having Glacier National Park so close by was just perfect. We loved hiking in the park during the day and unwinding in the hot tub at night, with the most breathtaking sunsets as our backdrop. The cabin was incredibly cozy and spotless! Ed and Jo are simply wonderful - they went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed to feel right at home. It was fantastic to get insider tips from Ed on park shortcuts and to enjoy Jo's excellent restaurant recommendations. Jo and Ed, you are both truly remarkable people, thank you for opening up your beautiful home to us. We created countless treasured memories that we will forever hold dear and can't wait for our next visit! I highly recommend experiencing a stay at this cozy cabin on Spoon Lake - it's an opportunity not to be missed!

My wife and I had a wonderful stay here for the week. The pictures don't do it justice, it's even better in real life. Ed and Jo were fantastic hosts and did an excellent job of walking the line between being there if you needed anything while also giving you plenty of space and privacy. The location is convenient to both Columbia Falls and Glacier while maintaining a very rural feel. Everything we needed was there and I honestly can't think of anything that could have been better. Awesome property and awesome hosts, thank you for a wonderful trip!

We stayed for 5 days; our only regret is not booking another night. Inside was very clean. The lake was tranquil, and we still got to see wildlife right on the property! The owners were very knowledgeable about things to do nearby. We can't wait to come back; we have already told our friends and family about this spot =] I highly recommend coming here to get in touch with nature and take a break from the hustle and bustle of busy life.

Owners are super friendly and responsive. Great cozy cabin with a view to die for. Town is small but bery friendly. Also, if you have never been to this area or Montana in general, they do not speed. Drive the speed limit do not tailgate. No one is in a rush in Montana, so please adhere to their rules. Best coffee in town is cowgirl coffee and mountain trader co. Also, go for a drive through the glacier and you wont be disappointed. Thanks again

This was our first trip to Montana and we couldn't have picked a better spot! Actually, the worst part about it, was having to leave! Everything was as advertised and the kayaks were an added bonus! The suggestions from Ed and Jo's delicious Huckleberry muffins were hospitality at it's finest! I would recommend this place to anyone! We'll be back!!

Wow! Beautiful place on a tranquil, beautiful lake! Couldn’t be any better!!!

Beautiful, tranquil home on a secluded lake. So peaceful and quiet. We loved going out on the lake in the canoe. The living space is beyond words, it is decorated so lovely inside and cleaner than any other rental home we have stayed in. We used the hot tub each evening and enjoyed soaking in it looking out over the lake. We cooked all our meals in the wonderful kitchen. It had everything we needed to make our meals and so much space. Everything part of the house was high end and incredible.
The bed is very comfortable, we didn't even draw the shades at night as there is so much privacy and we like to waken with the sunrise coming through our window. It was so nice to sleep with the windows open each night and smell the fresh MT air. We will surely remember this place for a long time and would highly recommend it. Ed and Jo were fantastic hosts and the huckleberry muffins they baked for us were a nice treat. Thank you for this special place!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Spoon lake. Ed and Jo are excellent hosts. The accommodations are excellent and provided us with a peaceful and restful place after long days of hiking in Glacier National Park. Additionally, we were in close proximity to the park, Columbia Falls, and Whitefish, which made for short, scenic drives to get food, gas, etc. One of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed and strongly recommend to anyone. Plus the Huckleberry muffins Ed and Jo made for us were delicious.

This was the perfect spot for our family of 3 (myself, husband, 2-year old daughter) to stay while we explored Glacier National Park in mid-October. It had everything we needed to cook meals, and relax after hiking each day. We enjoyed using the canoe and hot tub. It's a quick drive to West Glacier, and a longer but beautiful drive to East Glacier. Ed was a great host, very easy to communicate with and even brought us huckleberry muffins and helped with a tire during our visit. 10/10!

We had an amazing honeymoon at Spoon Lake. The property was immaculate, and allowed us to have an amazing time exploring Glacier National Park. It was an easy 20 minute commute to the West Glacier entrance. Going to the Sun was closed on the west side of the park, but the house was close enough to the main roads that we were still able to make it over to Many Glacier and Polebridge. The hot tub was a welcome respite after some long days of hiking. The hosts had great communication, and we were never left wanting for amenities. I would highly recommend the property to anyone that wants beautiful, quiet sunrises and sunsets over the lake and an amazing home base that is close enough to civilization for an easy grocery trip.
5.0 / 5.0
We really enjoyed our time at this property. It is a definitely a hidden gem on the outskirts of Glacier National Park. Easy access to all areas and to downtown Columbia Falls. The property was immaculate and the hosts were very attentive to our needs. Spoon lake provides for a very peaceful and tranquil stay. Sunset kayaking and canoeing was relaxing at the end of a day at the park. We would definitely come back here to stay.

My husband and I stayed there for a week and it was one of the best places we've ever stayed! Ed and Jo were there and were so kind and helpful, but also respectful of our privacy. She even made us homemade Huckleberry Muffins! It's so close to GNP, but picturesque on its own as well. The hot tub was amazing after hiking all day, and going out on the lake to fish or just enjoy the view was incredible. Didn't want to leave. Definitely hope to be back one day!

My husband and I stayed here for my 50th birthday getaway. Jo greeted us as soon as we pulled in. The accommodations were comfortable and clean. Ed gave us directions to the park via a shortcut. We enjoyed hiking in the park everyday and soaking in the hot tub every night. We could not have asked for a better location nor friendlier hosts.
Note to others you probably do not need to buy your own bear spray. There are several cans available in the unit.

Loved our week here during our time at Glacier National Park! The surrounding scenery is more beautiful than a picture can capture. Cabin was clean, and had plenty of space. And loved the hot tub at night watching the bats - the perfect way to relax after a long day hiking. Thank you so much for the wonderful hospitality and sharing your little slice of heaven with us!

A beautiful place to stay! The owners couldn’t have been nicer. They surprised us with delicious, homemade huckleberry muffins the first morning. We loved kiyaking on the lake just outside our back door as well as soaking in the hot tub on the back patio. The place was a close distance from Glacier National Park and other activities (ATV rental, white water rafting, etc.). We thoroughly enjoyed our week there!
