About this house rental
Conveniently located 1000 feet above the village of Uvita, where the mountains go right down to the coast, this private 2000 square foot villa is nestled in a secluded jungle setting with ocean views from the house, patio and pool. Our property manager will meet you on your arrival to Uvita, orient you to the area, and escort you up to the house. He will drive his own vehicle up to the house and you will follow in yours. Due to the rapid rise in elevation, a 4x4 SUV will be needed. Rolando will be available to you by text, email or phone call throughout your stay for questions and issues that may arise. He will attend in person when needed.
There are ocean views across the entire west side of the house: kitchen, dining area, living room and veranda. One of the two bedrooms is set behind the veranda and can open up on it, allowing for an ocean view from bed. You do not need to bring much clothing because we have a dedicated laundry room and even provide the detergent. If you want to stay connected in the wilds, bring your laptop. The villa has WiFi. We have a Smart TV so bring your passwords for Nextflix or Amazon or take a look at our extensive film collection which you can play on our DVD. There is also a stereo system with lots of CDs to choose from.
Hike right from the front door down to a nearby river, a 10 minute walk away, for a swim in a waterfall pool. Or make the 10 minute drive down to the village. Uvita is a multi-cultured community which serves as the shopping hub for the area. There are restaurants, supermarkets, a tourist information center, cafes, boutiques and shops. There is a beautiful farmer's market every Saturday morning where many local artisans sell their wares. Uvita connects to Bahia, the entrance to Marino Ballena National Park which has the Whale's Tail, a nearly 700 meter long and 250 meters wide sandbank, the third largest in the world.
Tour operators here (we recommend the Uvita Information Center) will bring you snorkeling right off the coast at Ballena Isla or to the famous Cano Island for scuba or snorkeling. They also offer tours to Corcovado National Park across the bay for a day of hiking in one of the few primal forests left in the world. Or choose a day of deep sea fishing or tour Uvita's 1000 acre wildlife preserve. There are zip line tours and ATV tours. Go 5 miles down the Costanera to kayak on the Terraba River in the largest mangrove in all of Central America. We also have several wonderful waterfalls which you can walk to or rent a horse and ride there. The Whale's Tail divides the endless coastline of beaches into two distinct kinds. On one side, enjoy vigorous surf for both swimming and surfing. And on the other side, enjoy the calm water ideal for snorkeling.
With ocean breezes all day and cool mountain air at night, there is no need for air conditioning (although one bedroom has an in-wall unit). The two large bedrooms have queen sized beds (one bedroom has an additional single bed), private baths, and are separated by a spacious living room with dining area. All closets are dehumidified. Fully equipped kitchen and vaulted ceilings with palm frond ceiling fans give this home both comfort and beauty. Incredible wildlife and spectacular sunsets make Casa Toucan unforgettable. Wake up to the calls of howler monkeys and have sunset cocktails with resident toucans by your 40 foot ocean-view, very private swimming pool.

This is the best VRBO we have ever stayed in for a variety of reasons. Lynn and Rob are warm, inviting and generous hosts. They have equipped their VRBO with all of the necessities plus some you could ever need for your trip. Everything from the kitchen to poolside conveniences, it was all there. They were quick to respond to emails and so kind. Their home is well cared for and a beautifully laid out design that works well for a couple(s) or a family to enjoy. It’s spacious, has room to relax privately or to gather together for dinners or games. Rolando, greeted us the day we arrived and was also very attentive, kind and friendly. We knew if we needed anything he was there to help us. However we didn’t, it was all provided for us the minute we arrived.
The views and the surroundings were spectacular. We woke to the sounds of the howler monkeys every morning, and a family of toucans singing throughout the day (we could see in the nearby trees.) The sunsets over the breathtaking ocean views became our evening countdowns as it dove into dusk. This VRBO is close to town making the beach, grocery stores and restaurants all there within minutes.
We loved every minute we were there and hope to return for many years.
Thank you Lynn, Rob and Rolando, we are grateful to you for providing the best vacation we have ever had.

This house was everything and more! The views were spectacular, it was warm, inviting, and felt like home away from home. Thank you so much for allowing us to use your little piece of paradise.

The property was even better than anticipated, just a little slice of heaven. Lynn and Rob are so easy to work with and Rolando the property manager is so communicative and welcoming. We will be back!

Within the first 15 min of being on property we saw a group of monkeys and toucans right out the porch. The pool was a nice treat after our morning adventures.
The first time or 2 up and down the mountain were a little intense but we soon mastered the climb. Check in was super easy and Ro was extra communicative with us- even leading up to our arrival.
The place was just what we were hoping for accommodations wise. The little hike to the waterfall was easy and fun. We felt safe, and our belongings secure, when we left for daily activities, etc.
Highly recommend Casa Toucan.

With its stunning view Casa Toucan packs plenty of WOW factor and delivered a quintessential Costa Rica vibe.
Highlights beyond the view was the daily drives up and down the mountain (a 10 minute one-way off-roading adventure), the 15 minute walk from the house through the jungle to a private river oasis, along with access to beach chairs and towels that made our beach trips more comfortable. Also the guest information book was very helpful, providing plenty of info on local activities and restaurant options with accurate reviews. Of note, the Whales and Dolphins mountain side dinning option has change owners and name. Beautiful spot.
Rolando (the local property manager) was exceptionally attentive at checkin and throughout our stay. Wifi was fast and we convenient had good cell service consider how remote we were.
The only aspects that caught us a bit off guard was that only the 2nd bedroom with a queen and single bed has glass windows and A/C. The remainder of the house is open air with screen. Wonderful to hear the jungle sounds flow in, but can be on the warm side for sleeping in the primary room. And as much as the screens were in good repair, we made use of the can of bug killer left by Rolando a couple of times.
In all we were very happy with our stay and would book again in the future.
Thank you to the Clark’s and Rolando!

We had a fantastic stay at Casa Toucan for a month. Lynn and Bob's home is as lovely as it is in the pics, even better.! It is beautiful, spacious and comfortable. Lynn and Bob have everything in the home you should need. We liked to have breakfast & dinner in most days and there was everything we needed to do so. There is even a frother for the milk for our morning coffee we so looked forward to having on the terrace after being woken 5:30 /5:40 am from the howlers and the birds. It was a great way to wake up. We normally do not enjoy a swimming pool but did we ever love this wonderful private pool, clean and fresh , we used it every am and pm . After a hot day away ,a swim and glass of wine on the pool terrace watching the sunset was a wonderful experience. The beds are comfortable and the screened in master bedroom will ensure a nice sleep in fresh air. Our adult children and their friends joined us for a few nights and they said it was their favorite place they had stayed in CR on their travels :)
Yes, you definitely do need a 4x4 to get up the mountain,. You will get used to this journey up and down after a few trips. Rolando was great in meeting us and showing us the place. He was in touch if we had any needs/concerns. during our stay. If you want the feel of staying local, Uvita is a great town for this adventure . We would not hesitate to book Casa Toucan again.

We had a fantastic time at this lovely home. There were 3 of us in the group. The house is beautiful, clean, and comfortable with stunning views. Rolando the caretaker is very responsive and helpful whenever we had any questions. Uvita is an amazing town, with lots to do and see. The only downside to this property is that it’s up a steep hill so you really can’t walk into town (you need a car), so just be mindful of that. Also the beds in the guest bedroom could use updating (queen and twin). Highly recommend this property for those wanting a getaway in the rainforest!

We thoroughly enjoyed Casa Toucan. Rolando was great at attending to all our needs promptly. Once we got used to the rough road up the mountain from Uvita it was great. We loved the roominess, open air feel, great terrace and warm pool and the jungle views from everywhere. Howlers woke us every morning at 5AM and we heard more birds singing by 6AM than we could ever I.D. Only saw the howlers twice in a month but lots of toucans, aricaris, guans and many more. Would definitely consider returning here in the future. Thanks so much Lynn for your great place and for accommodating our one year old grandson.

This is a very relaxing location, there is a small view of the ocean but the jungle valley view is amazing. We were woken up every morning by howler monkeys and birds.
The house was well stocked with dishes and kitchen necessities as well as whatever you would need to head to the beach. It is not an "upscale" house but very very comfortable and clean. The property manager was awesome and responsive.
We would highly recommend, however, you will need a 4x4 vehicle due to the steepness of the roads getting here. If you have never been to this area and are getting off the main road by the beach, all the roads are dirt/gravel and can be very steep.

This home far exceeded our expectations. We felt the home was very private and exceptionally safe. Because of the open air feel of the home it felt that we were always living in the middle of the jungle. Woke up each morning to the sounds of monkeys and birds. The last morning spent enjoying great Costa Rica coffee on the patio and counted nine toucans. We got used to driving up the steep curvy roads to watch the amazing sunsets each evening. The house itself functioned perfectly for our family of five. Mechanically everything worked great, which could not be said for other family members renting nearby. The kitchen was fully equipped to easily prepare meals.
The area had plenty to do to keep us all entertained. Several nearby beaches for boogie boarding, snorkeling, ziplined, waterfalls, deep sea fishing and wonderful restaurants and bars close by. My husband just enjoyed staying at the home to watch the birds, monkeys, neighbors friendly dog, swimming in the pool and great WIFI. Hopefully someday we will get to return to CASA TOUCAN!

I would like to give a sincere thank you to Lynn for allowing us to experience her AMAZING piece of Paradise with 360 degrees of jungle and an Ocean view. This house is stocked with everything you need and more, and has screened windows for cool breezes at night, where you become one with the jungle and it's amazing sounds! Early to bed every night, so we could awake at 5:30am with the jungle and the sounds and sights of the Toucans, Coati, Howler and White face Capuchin monkeys, Scarlet Macaws, and so many different Butterflies and birds all from the deck of a 40 foot lap pool I might add!! On most nights come 5:30 till 6pm we would sit out on the deck for some of the most spectacular sunsets , WOW! Down the mountain 10 minutes is Uvita with a couple of grocery stores, bank, restaurants, etc. Activities in the area include Whale's Tail, Nauyaca Waterfalls nearby, Atv, ziplining, Surfing, Nature hikes and so much more. Since coming here for 8 years now, this house in Paradise has by far been the most amazing experience we have had and has checked off everything we love about Costa Rica! So Grateful!

Once again we returned to Casa Tucan and it definitely did not disappoint. The house has such a great layout that you are literally sleeping in the jungle. One night in particular we were treated to a symphony of sound compliments of howler monkeys, birds, frogs and so much more. Everything you want and need is at the house - including a fabulous trail to waterfalls. We stayed for a week and literally left twice. Amazing house and property- thank you Lynn for sharing Casa Tucan!

Casa Toucan is more amazing than can be described in words. It is in the canopy. The nonstop wildlife viewing had me wishing for a camera tripod as I couldn’t stop shaking. So many bird species, butterflies, gigantic geckos and crazy insects. Even while resting inside in the afternoon we saw a gigantic green iguana traversing the canopy top. I heard monkeys but as my leg is broken I couldn’t chase them down. The pool is pure heaven and there’s always a little shade except mid-day.
The house was perfectly clean and well stocked in the kitchen and elsewhere.
Rolando is amazing. We didn’t have issues with the house but upon checkout had a flat tire. He showed up in minutes with a car jack to help us out. So rental car - Alamo has an office in Uvita and were insistent we take a new car as our tires were bald to get back to San Jose. Best rental experience Ever. 4x4 is a must.
So if you really like nature (it’s loud around the clock) and can handle some heat (we struggled just a little but came from sub-zero) then you’ll never find a better Casa!

My wife and I have just had a lovely week in Casa Toucan and the place definitely lives up to its name. We saw a pair of toucans and a multitude of other birds every day, particularly early morning and evening. We heard howlers howling and saw a couple high in the trees on our last morning.
The house is extremely well-equipped and the kitchen lacks for nothing. There are ceiling fans everywhere and one of the bedrooms has efficient AC.
The property is a at the end of a 3-km gravel track and a good 4WD vehicle is definitely required.
We should also mention Rolando, the manager/caretaker. He couldn't do enough for us. What a star!
To summarise, we had a great time and will definitely be back.

Casa Toucan is located in a beautiful canopy. The Toucans flying around, in the morning awakened with the Howler monkeys sounding like King Kong. They were swinging from branch to branch, eating along their way! New experience!!! The lizards in the house were cute chasing the insects on the ceiling. Speaking of insects, there were no mosquitoes, amazing! We had a visit from a hummingbird in the living room. We gently removed him, it chirped when released. I think it was a thank you!!! The layout of the house is spacious and comfortable. The pool was great, fairly hidden from the neighboring house. Since it was warm, it was perfect to jump in at all hours of the day or night! Everything was just perfect. The experience was fabulous, definitely a different type of vacation which I would repeat in a heartbeat.

We are a family of 4- two adults and 2 children age 6 and 8.
We all loved staying at Casa Toucan. Very spacious rooms, open plan, view on the ocean over lush jungle. Space, air, bird calls, guttural monkey sounds- indescribable! Truly a place to relax and enjoy every minute. Pool is great, water is warm and clean, no chlorine smell.
House is very clean as well. It is also very spacious and very comfortably furnished in a great taste.
We found everything we need for a comfortable stay. The owners provided beach towels and toys, huge collection of DVDs (but only few for kids), paper towels, even laundry detergent was provided!
Even thought the house is in the middle of a jungle we have not had wild life crawling around the house. We saw a tiny lizard inside a few times, I think it was anole.
Outside we saw toucans and lizards. Heard but seldom saw monkeys.
Waterfall a little ways from the house is beautiful and the water is deep enough for swimming. Last few steps to the fall are quite steep but manageable.
Staying at Casa Toucan was great. We definitely got the value for our money.

Casa Toucan is an amazing jungle get away with plenty to do in the surrounding area. The 3mile drive up and down the road, can be tiring after a while, but well worth it. Plenty of activities, beaches and restaurants within 30 minutes of the house.
The house itself is very comfortable and spacious with a great view. Fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle. The kitchen has just about everything you need to cook a meal for 6 or 7 people, and there is a grill outside. Having a washer/dryer was a bonus. There is also a property management team to assist you. They have great recommendations, are easily available, and very kind.

My husband and I and another couple spent 10 days in this house. We have rented multiples from VRBO in places all over the world. This was one of the best equipped houses we have ever stayed in. There was everything we needed for cooking, the grill was great- lots of movies for watching. The house is perfect for two couples or a family. The pool is fabulous, and the view is amazing. We woke up to howlers and watched Toucans every day. Some of the best sunsets we have ever seen! The road to the house is steep but manageable with a 4 wheel drive. The only negative comment I have is the bed in the guest room- it creaked horribly and was difficult to get used to. They need to buy a bed that doesn't creak every time you turn over. Other than that, it was a great experience and we will definitely be back!

My family and I were in casa toucan for a week during the month of July. It was an amazing experience. You MUST have a 4x4 to get up there. The way up is very steep but that is of course since the house has an amazing view and location in the rainforest overlooking the ocean. Even when it rains it is amazing to be there. You will be woken up by howler monkeys sometimes which is all part of the adventurous stay! I highly recommend this GORGEOUS home with many amenities. All you need is some food and yourself! Oh and yes there are many things to do at the bottom of the mountain! too many tours, it's impossible to do it all!

We knew this would be a great place based on the photo's and the reviews from recent renters. But anyway, we were surprised. This is such a perfect place - everything works and the quality is top notch (no Ikea here).
We stayed five days over Christmas with three teenagers - the teenagers loved the place as much as we did. It takes twelve minutes to drive from the main road to the house. Pretty steep, but no problem with a 4WD.
During our stay we visited Playa Hermose and Playa Ballena. We took a tour to Cano Island and Corcovado with Doplhin Tours. This is recommended - saw dolphins, whales, a crocodile, turtles, monkeys etc. Pedro was a great guide on sea and in the rainforest.
Would love to go back!

We spent three nights last July at Casa Toucan. We all enjoyed our stay and found it way too short. The house is located high in the mountain with some view to the ocean but this is not the main attraction. You really feel like living into the jungle. Each morning we were awake by howler monkeys and birds sometime located just beside the house. Having a morning coffee in this environment was for us one of the best part of our trip. Everyday we saw Toucans (...) flying around. You rapidly become familiar with their sound and enjoy trying to find them around.
Please have the small hike to the fall and river close by. You have great chance to see the monkeys like we did. The house doesn't have windows except for the second bedroom. We never needed air conditionning even if it was above 24 deg. at night. There is a small breeze combined with the ceiling fan that make you sleep well.
The pool was fantastic, always refreshing and made our two sons happy to go back home after our daily adventures in the region. The house was very well equiped and we had everything we needed in the kitchen to prepare our meals.
The master bedroom is very nice specialy for the shower wich gives you the feeling of being outside.
This area (Uvita, Dominical and surround), is gorgeous and not very well know by tourists. Marina Ballena park is a must if you want to go to the beach. There is some very nice restaurant. A stop to Citrus (Ojochal) is highly recommanded if you
want a good food experience.
We hignly recommend renting this villa. This is now the way we travel with our kids since it is much more adapted to our way of living than hotel and resorts. Also, Uvita has two very nice grocery store wich had all the product we wanted and more. I think it is due in part with the fact that many houses around are owned by North-American people. They also had a reasonable choice of wine...
For those worried with the road to get there, If you have a 4x4 there is no problemo ! You should worry only , like our sons mentionned, when there is snow on the road... (darn Canadians)
We found our trip too short (2 weeks) too see all the beauties of Costa-Rica. We will come back one day to complete our visit and Casa Toucan will certainly be on our list.

My wife and I just got back from two blissful weeks in Costa Rica, spent almost entirely at Casa Toucan, surrounded on all sides by lush greenery.
This is the most secluded place we have ever rented. If you stand at the far end of the very nice pool, you _might_ see your closest neighbour, still quite a distance away. What you do see is jungle, everywhere jungle, with all the little pleasant surprises that accompany such a setting: toucans, monkeys (howler and capuchin), butterflies, hummingbirds, etc.. You get the picture. This is not to say that you are seeing all these animals non-stop, but you will see animals on a regular basis. And some may wake you up in the early morning hours too!
The house itself is fantastic with all the amenities you would want or expect. Fridge, oven, washer, dryer, dishwasher, dishes, utensils, myriad kitchen gadgets, BBQ (though we didn't use it), tv, DVDs, cleaning agents: it's all there (with one odd exception, no corkscrew, which I'm sure will be rectified, given the attentive nature of the owners). Without a doubt the best stocked villa we have ever rented.
The views from inside, from the excellent patio and from the pool level are all fantastic. The sunsets are amazing. I can truthfully say that the villa is actually better looking "live" than what you see in the pictures.
The villa is located about 10-15 minutes from Uvita which has two supermarkets, a drugstore, liquor store, restaurants, etc. Also nearby is a national park with whale watching, snorkeling, or just hanging by the beach, though we mostly spent our days lounging by the villa's nice pool, catching up on some reading.
All of this does however come at a price, and that's the steep drive from Uvita up the hill (and down the hill later), which can be a bit scary at first, but becomes much easier to navigate once you've done it once or twice. The owners pretty well tell you that you will need a 4x4 car, which we did. We never actually went into 4x4 mode, but we did go into low gear and were thankful for the clearance. This is the only downside, and its a small one, for staying at the villa.
Bottom line is that we highly recommend Villa Toucan.
I am still scratching my head as to how they ever got the internet in such a remote location!

My friend and I had the pleasure of staying at Casa Toucan this past June. I have been to Costa Rica before, and I have rented houses there and other places internationally. First, the owners of Casa Toucan are very responsive and helpful - the best experience I have had renting a home! All of our questions were not only promptly answered, but the owners provided us with lots of additional information, which we very much appreciated. Second, the house is lovely! It's spacious, well-planned out, and very clean, and we were very comfortable during our stay. Yes, the hill is a bit daunting the first time, but after that, we got used to it and drove it daily, including at night...in the rain, etc. (We did have a 4WD). The house also well-stocked - more so than any other house I've rented. We didn't need to purchase anything extra aside from food - the owners provide plenty of everything, from dishwashing soap to laundry detergent to paper towels - thank you! Finally, the setting was gorgeous...the sunsets were incredible, and the jungle sounds - especially at night - were like listening to a nature CD! The house exceeded our expectations as far as view, layout, and comfort. It really is lovely.
It's clear that the owners take pride in their home, and they go out of their way to make sure that travelers feel at home during their stay. The house is truly a "jungle retreat." We'd absolutely come back, and I'd recommend it to anyone traveling to the Uvita area.

We spent 4 nights at Casa Toucan in June, the early rainy season. We loved it. The property is clean and well equipped. The owners are very well-organized and have seen to most needs. The home is spacious and nicely laid out. The location is beautiful, though a four-wheel-drive is certainly essential to get there. The temperature and humidity were more comfortable at the higher elevation. We heard the howler monkeys nearby, but were not lucky enough to see them. There were plenty of birds. There are some beautiful beaches nearby.

Myself and my wife had a truly wonderful time at Casa Toucan, paradise really. The photos don't do it justice. Amazing view with stunning two-hour-long sunsets, loads of wildlife, with monkeys leaping from tree to tree right in front of the terrace and it felt very luxurious having our own totally private, secluded swimming pool. Everything was perfect with the house, couldn't fault it anywhere. The worst thing about it was leaving.

We had an unforgettable holiday in Casa Toucan! The place is just magical. It has a fantastic view. The house is very clean, organised and it has everything you need to have a very pleasant and wonderful stay. It's in the middle of the jungle so you can hear the monkeys and see the toucans and other lovely birds on a daily basis. Rob and Lynn are very nice and they make their home feel like yours. We definitely recommend Casa Toucan and we hope you have as much fun as we did!

I was pleasantly surprised by the architecture of Toucan House as well as its location. This house is unique. The rooms are designed to let you feel you are in the wild, day and night. The master bedroom is very spacious, with an open master bath. The views of the ocean and the mountain are spectacular.
An important feature of this house is privacy. It is located up in the hills, wild tropical vegetation surrounding the house. Nevertheless it is only minutes away from the infrastructure of the town of Uvita and the beaches in the south Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
All descriptions were detailed and accurate, the property was clean and well maintained. I would definitively recommend this property to a friend or relative.

We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Toucan! The villa is nestled up on a mountain in the rain forest. Every morning two large toucans greeted us. We saw lots of exotic birds and one morning we saw a family of howler monkeys! Everyday we explored the many different beaches. Each one has its own charm. Costa Rica is known for its surfing and sport fishing. My husband and son took a charter and caught a large sailfish. Everyday was sunny and very warm. I hope
we can come back.

We wanted to thank you for renting us your beautiful house in Uvita. We were so glad to get there after ten days of travelling, hiking and driving, (and after the climb up to the house!) that we didn't come down the hill again for over 36 hours! We just loved the place. It had everything we could have possibly needed and more. We really appreciated the list of recommended restaurants and attractions. We liked having a coffee grinder to make the most of the excellent Costa Rican coffee we had bought at an organic plantation in Paraiso. We liked the BBQ, fluffy beach towels, watched one DVD, took a walk down the grassy hill behind the house, did laundry, but basically just enjoyed being together in a beautiful, quiet setting.
We loved the beautiful view, sunsets, tranquillity and, especially, the privacy. After doing all that laundry, we didn't want to get it dirty again, and luckily we didn't have to wear much here! We were in the pool at least 4 times a day. It was perfect!
On the Sat. morning, we forced ourselves (having almost run out of food...) to go down to the town, where we poked our noses into the nice market (interestingly most of the vendors seemed to be expats), did a quick email check at the nice little cafe opposite the market, ate lunch at Citrus (which was great), looked at a couple of the beaches (hot, hot, hot! and little or no shade), and ran back "home" to make the most of the day we had left! We had only booked for 3 nights and wished we had had the house longer!
Think we are in our 20s or 30s? No way; one of us is in her mid 50s and the other in his 60s!

Casa Toucan was an excellent place to vacation in Costa Rica. It is on the pacific side in the south, so less developed and populated. The location up a rough and tumble road (like most in Costa Rica) offers spectacular view and a perfect spot to enjoy the incredible variety of magnificent birds. There is a deciduous tree standing in front of the setting sun that the Toucans love to sit in and bark and chirp at sunset. The Howler monkeys were right out the back for several days while we were there. The pool is a salt water pool which was wonderful to have in the hot humid weather. The house remained cool and comfortable without the use of air conditioning. It was fairly well stocked with most kitchen utensils and we enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. There were boogie boards and beach towels available for the beach. Keep valuables at home though, we had our car broken into and our beach bag stolen so we highly recommend you keep your valuables in the lock up and back in your car where you can see it so they can't open the back and sneak in, as we were swimming right in front of our 4X4 . The house itself felt incredibly safe with awesome neighbours on both sides. They were really fun to meet and hang out with. Our hosts were great at answering questions prior to our arrival and in providing information through a great book they had when you arrive. The best restaurants for us were in Ojochal - about 15 minutes away- Citrus was a lovely riverside restaurant and Exotica has fabulous food and is owned and operated by French Canadians. Dominical there is a really good Thai restaurant as well. The Saturday market in Uvita was great furn too. Just drive down the mountain, across the highway and on your right is a little community centre where you can get wonderfully fresh veggies and tasty treats as well as meet some interesting ex-pat who live in Costa Rica. We are in the hospitality industry and can tell you from our experience on both sides of the vacation rental, Casa Toucan is a wonderful find.
2.5
For anyone thinking of visiting Casa Toucan we (Art and Lesley) want to say that this is an absolutely spectacular and romantic place. It has just the right combination of the rustic and the elegant. Large picture windows at the back and side give you a real connection with nature. The large window at the rear overlooks the swimming pool lower down and every evening through the back there is an unobscured view of a beautiful sunset over the Pacific Ocean. In the evenings and mornings Toucans flock to the trees, and on some mornings monkeys come down the hill from the opposite direction to visit. The road is steep and a 4-wheel drive is necessary for the 15 minute drive to get up the hill from town, but along the coast, well paved local flat roads take you to easily accessible and very beautiful beaches and some very excellent restaurants. For us the daily drive up and down the hill actually became fun after an initial accommodation and acclimatization in the first day or so. Casa Toucan is well equipped and has some of the better cutlery and kitchen utensils we have seen in multiple visits to other locations in the Caribbean. The outside night lighting is varied and perfect for dinner dining or enjoying the evening air. If you are looking for the experience that you would get in a 5-star hotel in a major city with people to attend to your every need, Casa Toucan is not for you, but if you are looking for a beautiful home that is truly integrated into the similar beauty of the jungle, this is your place. Thanks for a wonderful stay. We would like to come back again some day.
