About this apartment rental
Welcome to Casa Bella Mia. You can enjoy El Centro and get a good night's sleep in this flat! Located minutes from Old Town via a short taxi ride (roughly $2), bus ride (30c) or tranvia ($1) where you can enjoy the old architecture, great dining and bars is offered downtown. After the fun, you can come home to a safe, quiet and relaxing space. No loud bar noise until two in the morning here, just a good night's sleep!
Your flat is the ground floor of an Ecuadorian duplex located in a small Ciudadela one block from 7 kilometers of walkways beside the river Yanuncay. There are three bedrooms. The master bedroom has a queen size orthopedic bed with an en suite bathroom(with shower). The second bedroom has a queen size bed next to the half bath. The third bedroom has a double bed and is next to the second full bath (with shower). All beds have high quality cotton bedding, down comforters, and lots of soft pillows for your comfort. The bathrooms have quality towels, rain shower heads and soft rugs. Some bath essentials and amenities are provided.
The flat looks directly out to a lush garden filled with many varieties of flowers and succulents, your own avocado tree. If in season, you are welcome to the bounty. Song birds, hummingbirds and butterflies make their home here too.
The kitchen will not disappoint. It is bright and colorful! Under-cabinet lighting provides plenty of task lighting. We stock the basics and give you the makings for your first cup of coffee or tea to get your morning started. The corner market is two blocks away. We provide a coffee pot, local coffee, toaster oven, blender, artisan dishes and quality spices. If cooking is not your thing, jump in a cab and be in old town in 10 minutes ($2) for a variety of breakfast options or walk across the river to La Yunta restaurant..
A private English speaking driver can be arranged for any transportation needs, and cleaning services can be arranged for longer stays. On request, we provide a cell phone with minutes and pre-programmed numbers (you only pay for the minutes).
My husband and I are retired and live in the upstairs flat. Your privacy is guaranteed , but we are available as needed. When we travel, our expectations for cleanliness and comfort are paramount. We will do our best to translate our expectations into your stay at Casa Bella Mia.
For pet owners:
As you know, many units will not allow pets. There are indeed reasons for their policy. We accept responsible pet owners and up to two trained dogs! We do not normally accept other pets due to allergy issues. Inquire if you have special pet needs. A safe, fully enclosed backyard is right out the patio door for night trips and a park, one block away, for walks and off leash runs. Keep in mind, when looking at other properties, that Cuenca is an urban town with lots of concrete and very little green space. We do not allow pets to be left alone! Many dogs will bark and get on the furniture when their owner is absent. You can arrange for your pet to stay with us, for a small fee; or provide your own supervision. We can provide you a large crate. (Exceptions are made for crate trained dogs who do not bark). Our dogs are not aggressive but we make sure they are always supervised when they are in the yard or other common areas.
Cuenca is a lovely town and it is a fun place to explore, so please contact us and plan on enjoying all it has to offer!

This is a spacious and beautiful property with a lovely, flower-filled backyard. Well stocked, with every amenity you could need. Rex and Cheryl, our hosts who live upstairs, are very friendly and helpful, from loaning us Rex’s bike for the day to taking me to the doctor’s when I had a bad fall. We also loved their dog Pip, very friendly, and well trained to not come into the house. Two things to be aware of if you choose this property. One is that it is pretty far from the action of the old town if you wanted to walk, at least 45 minutes. Taking cabs is by far the best way to go and you can get to the old town in 10 to 15 minutes for about 2 to 3 dollars each way. The closest restaurant is about a 10 minute walk away, although there are a couple of small Tiendas closer. The other thing is that if you are using all three bedrooms, the smallest front room has no storage or place to put things. If those two aspects are not an issue, I would highly recommend Rex and Cheryl’s beautiful home.

We had a great month stay at Rex and Cheryl's place. From the moment we walked inside, we felt at home! Their flat is clean, spacious, well furnished, and tastefully decorated. We enjoyed the short walk to the river for picnics and afternoon walks. Easy access to the Tranvia for rides into town was convenient and fun!
Rex, Cheryl, and their dog Pip were gracious and helpful hosts. We will be telling our family and friends about Casa Bella Mia.

Muy Bien!
This is a wonderful property, very well-equipped and clean. It is really an advantage to have the property owners upstairs. They helped me with endless things during my stay, showed me how to get around, introduced me to other people, and helped me with my Spanish. They also became my new friends.

You cannot fly into Cuenca, Ecuador non-stop from another country. With that in mind, imagine you have spent many hours reaching Cuenca, plus a long taxi ride from the airport. At this point you may wonder if this will be worth the effort.
For us, it was far more than merely worth the effort.
My wife and I have lived in several apartments in at least four different countries during the past 10 years, and this is the best we have found.
The host met us at the door and showed us a spotlessly clean apartment, fully furnished with all we needed for the next two months. They provided a book with maps and suggestions of places to go and things to do.
The hosts (Rex and Cheryl) made themselves always available to us.
The beds were very comfortable, exceeding our expectations, and we always slept well. Outside the kitchen door was a covered patio where we often had breakfast or dinner. The patio opened on a beautiful back yard with flowering plants on the walls, many different flowers, and a tree with a hummingbird feeder and filled with avocados. (Janet rates the avocados as “absolutely delicious.”)
A block away is a walking trail along a beautiful river. The water is almost always perfectly clear and produces a soothing sound as it flows over the rocks. (There are three rivers in Cuenca and they join into one and flow to the Amazon). Park land was created on both sides of the river, and the park and trails extend for several miles. Eucalyptus trees (100 to 150 feet high) line the banks of the river and provide shade. Almost every day, we walked along the river. Several times, as we neared the end of our walk, we would stop and eat breakfast or lunch at La Yunta, a restaurant across the river from the apartment.
The hosts were happy to provide information regarding the city including things to do, places to see, and wonderful restaurants.
There is one more resident that must be mentioned. Her name is Pip. She is one of the most intelligent canines I have ever known. If you don’t like animals she will almost certainly leave you alone. But if you like dogs, as we do, she is absolutely delightful. She even seemed to learn our schedule. We usually sat on the patio with a glass of wine at 4 o’clock. Once when we were delayed, we found her at the back door looking very concerned that something might have happened to us.

The best rental and the best hosts we've ever had! The property was amazing and just as described. Great location just a block away from a river to take a morning walk. The hosts were the nicest, most communicative hosts. They provided us with a 40+ page information packet, answered all our questions, and were always available when we needed them. Highly recommend!

Comfortable home in a quiet neighborhood
Almost wanted to call this place our own! The living space was very spacious and perfect for our needs. The yard was comforting and relaxing. Close to a Tranvia stop that'll take you to/from the airport and the downtown area. Rex was helpful and went over a few things with us when we arrived. Other than that, he gave us our privacy. I would definitely stay here again and recommend this home.

Impeccable experience in every way!
OMG did we love our stay! Beautiful, spacious, well-equipped and quiet (for Ecuador) apartment. The location was perfect for us, steps away from gorgeous, eucalyptus-scented river walks. Two blocks from scores of buses to everywhere (get the Moovit app!) and the fabulous new Tranvia Tram to downtown (or a cheap cab ride.). Rex and Cheryl are eager to assist with advice, fix-its and anything you require (like finding a bike rental place for us.) The outdoor space is gorgeous, Cheryl is an expert gardener and periodically surprised us with flower arrangements. We also made good use of the BBQ and worked remotely outside watching the hummingbirds. And of course we adored Pip, the rascally border collie mix, because she unequivocally adored us! This is basically the best place ever and we were sad to leave even after 3 months.

Casa Bella Mia was perfect for our stay, two couples, in Cuenca. Rex was incredibly easy to work with from the very beginning. He offered to help us find a driver. We had everything we needed to be comfortable. The washing machine and dryer are great. Lighting is excellent. The bed linens are the nicest we’ve had in a VRBO! And, the hair dryer is fabulous. The backyard is lovely and very peaceful. We even enjoyed avocados from their tree. The location is very convenient ; a short, inexpensive taxi ride to the center of town. Rex even provides little cards to help taxis find their way and he is also very willing to order a taxi for you. We were able to relax and watch a couple of movies on Netflix! What a treat after being out in the Galapagos. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Bella Mia and highly recommend it.

Great property... very clean and spacious. We enjoyed the backyard for morning coffee and evening glass of wine. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything needed for cooking full meals. We also used the backyard grill a couple times. The house is located about 150 feet from a river in a safe neighborhood. The river has trails along both sides for walking or biking.... very beautiful in town river. We took taxis to downtown about a five minute ride, easy to do and very inexpensive $ 1.50Enjoyed staying here a little way from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area. Rex and Cheryl were super nice and very helpful. They have a fun little dog Pip, loved to go on long walks with us and loves treats. Almost kidnapped her and took her home with us, but we didn’t. Great place to stay , would recommend if you don’t want to be in noisy downtown, but with easy access to everything.

Staying at Cass Bella Mia helped enhance our stay in Ecuador. Rex and Cheryl are excellent hosts and a wealth of knowledge. If and when we come to Cuenca (which is very likely), we would stay here again. I have other friends interested in coming to visit or retire in Cuenca. I'd definitely recomend this lovely home.

We loved this place in Cuenca. This property is loaded with every convenience. They even stocked our fridge with milk and eggs to start us out. The neighborhood is nice and quiet. Garden Paradise in Cuenca
What an amazing experience. Our stay at Rex & Cheryl's home was the perfect place for us. Location is within 10-15 of everything in Cuenca. The home is nicely appointed with comfortable furnishing and a fantastic kitchen. There is a covered patio and a beautiful outdoor back garden that was ideal for our little dog. I judge short term rentals on a few specific criteria; Is it well located, is it comfortable (bed, living room, dining area, does the kitchen have what I need to cook all meals, fast wifi, and a quality shower. Well I have to say all boxes were checked. One highlight, the shower may be one of the top 10 I have ever experienced, all the hot water you want combined with outstanding pressure. That gets high marks from this traveler. Rex and Cheryl were wonderful host. They advised when we asked, they were always available and even helped locate goods and services. Rex was kind enough to go shopping for fishing equipment with me and showed us the ropes on the bus system. When it was time to go home and we needed a Vet to certify our dog was free from Screwworm he accompanied me to the Vet. What amazing service! If you are looking for a large and convenient rental in Cuenca this is the one to reserve. Thank you Rex & Cheryl for everything.

Our home away from home in Cuenca!
Casa Bella Mía was our home away from home for our 6 week stay in Cuenca. It was perfect for our family of 4 - super clean and safe, well appointed with all the modern conveniences, close to major avenues for catching a bus or taxi, and even closer to a beautiful riverside park to stroll or play. Rex and Cheryl were beyond helpful, always promptly assisting with any little need we had. We can’t wait to visit Cuenca again, and Casa Bella Mía will be our first choice for accommodation!

This beautiful property in a safe, quiet area, provides a peaceful retreat from historical Cuenca's hustle and bustle. Our spacious first floor flat included a private entrance from Rex and Cheryl's two story home. It is well appointed with a fully stocked kitchen, bathrooms, and high tech GE washer and dryer. The decor is tranquil and relaxing, appreciated after activity filled days visiting iglesias and museos in Cuenca's historical district convenient by taxista. The built-in Spanish colonial style closets with mirrored, dressing table added to the elegant ambiance. Cheryl has cultivated a beautiful garden, great for relaxing in the back yard. An outer neighborhood of Cuenca, by the tree lined Rio Yancucay, blocks from the western perimeter of the Pan American highway, is convenient for trips into the Ecuadorian campo and Andina highlands. There is a nearby small tienda across from the winding river park where children and families play. Rex was accommodating in assisting us with our internet and Skype access and in answering questions about the many tv program options. Their manual on Cuenca's restaurants, highlights, getting around and much more was helpful. We felt quite at home there and were thankful for this rental option.

Relaxing home away from home
Bella Mia is a spacious, well equipped and tastefully decorated apartment. Rex and Cheryl are always available for any help or advice you may need. There is a beautiful private garden for relaxing. The location is quiet and a bit outside the center. It is very easy to walk or take a bus ($0.30) or cab ($2-3) to the old center of town. This location in particular and Cuenca in general feels very safe. Whether alone or with another woman I was never fearful. I hope to return here in the future and highly recommend you include Bella Mia in your plans.

Perfect lodging in Cuenca
Irritatingly, I already wrote a review and have no idea why it didn’t post. Hope this one does. Casa Bella Mia is a really fabulous place on a quiet street a block away from the wonderful path along the river. As we have a dog, we were delighted to be able to walk and enjoy the beauty of the river. The apartment is well-situated fairly close to the old town, and taxis are inexpensive and plentiful. You could walk if so inclined, and certainly bike there. I was more pleased by the proximity of the walking trails so taking a cab into town was preferable. Casa Bella Mia is comfortable and spacious with great beds, a fully stocked kitchen, and a beautiful garden to relax in. It was pretty chilly when we were there, but I still availed myself of the garden. Rex and Cheryl are great hosts and willing to answer questions and help with any needs. Another bonus is that it is quite easy to visit the national park from the apartment’s location. Cajas National Park is well worth considering if visiting Cuenca.
We were traveling in an oversized van full of camping equipment, and it was wonderful to be able to park it behind the property’s gates rather than on the street. I highly recommend CasaBella Mia for anyone visiting Cuenca.

Only stayed 4 short days
We were two couples travelling through Ecuador for a month. After staying only a few nights at a time in hotels, it was a pleasure to be able to put down some roots, unpack and do some much need laundry - even if it was for only four nights.
Communication with Rex and Cheryl was prompt, and Rex was on hand to guide our taxi to the Casa Bella Mia upon our arrival. The property was just as pictured and there was ample room for the four of us. On site, Rex provided an information book with all the necessary guidance to make our stay enjoyable and stress free .
Although we had excursions planned for each of our four days, it was a pleasure to return to our home, grab a few beers, and just sit in the backyard enjoying the peace and quiet, and watch the hummingbirds stake out their territory.
Rex and Cheryl genuinely enjoying opening their home to guests (they live on the second floor - however, are never intrusive), and are great hosts. The kitchen is well equipped and after eating hotel food, we enjoyed whipping up some tasty meals. The shelves are also well stocked with items previous guests left and Rex was kind enough to provide eggs and bottled water.
We all agreed that Cuenca was our favourite city and we hope to return some day to explore it more fully.

The apartment is large, nicely decorated and equipped, and garden beautiful!
Hosts Rex and Cheryl “bent over backwards” to do anything to help us during our stay. My suitcase had been stolen before Cuenca and Cheryl had a closet of clothes out for me to wear!
Rex took us to a clinic and stayed for hours when we needed him! Their role as hosts is really that of friends. It is easy to get everywhere and we hated to leave!! The apartment is an oasis of calm and beauty.
Very highly recommended.

Exceptional hosts, comfortable space, wonderful proximity to nature
Our stay was made more comfortable and enjoyable by hosts Cheryl and Rex who went above and beyond helping us get taxi rides, organizing a driver to the national park, and informing us about free concerts and the best places to eat. We loved the beautiful, quiet garden, walking and biking the path beside beautiful River Yanukai, and the accessibility to the grocery store and the old city. From the well stocked kitchen to Cheryl and Alex’s hospitality, this spot enabled us to get the most out of Cuenca.

Amazing!
Casa Bella Mia was our home away from home. It is very beautiful, safe and cozy. The kitchen is fully stocked with appliances, utensils, etc. There is no oven but there is a small toaster oven, stove top, microwave and bbq pit for cooking.
The home is clean and spacious and Rex and Cheryl are so nice. If you need anything, they are upstairs and have a completely separate entrance to their apartment so you do have privacy.
The backyard looks like paradise and has the biggest hummingbirds I've ever seen.
You do hear some noise outside like dogs barking, a rooster that crows everyday, taxis honking periodically and sometimes there's a neighborhood party but it is not near as bad as if you were downtown. It also adds to the experience of being in this vibrant city. The Yanuncay river is a street away and so beautiful, lined with eucalyptus trees.
We were sad to have to leave this place. Our 3 year old cried because she wanted to stay in "our Ecuador home." We can't wait to come back. Cuenca is a beautiful city with so many things to see and do and having this home to come back to made it all the more enjoyable. We highly recommend Casa Bella Mia. You will not regret staying here. Happy Travels!

My wife and I just recently finished a week staying with our gracious hosts Rex and Cheryl. We can’t say enough positive about it. First the apartment was spacious, comfortable, fully eqiuipped and excellently stocked with basic food supplies. Everything worked perfectly from the WiFi to the Roku TV, to the washer and drier. The outdoor garden was beautiful and the house was easy to get to via inexpensive taxi or walking. I was easily able to safely walk to the downtown center or to the fully equipped Supermaxi supermarket. Our hosts were always nearby and available to answer any questions.
Finally, unfortunately we both became ill with a cold during our stay which seemed not to be improving. By then we had moved to another apartment with friends. We asked Rex for advice to see a doctor. Within a few of minutes of sending that email he sent back the name and address of an English speaking physician and HAD ALREADY MADE US AN APPOINTMENT WITH HIM! Wow. Such service and extra kindness deserves the highest recognition. Thank you again Rex and Cheryl.

Great place to stay!
Just returned from a week in Cuenca, staying at Casa Bella MIa.
_Immaculately clean
_Spectacular beds and bedding
_Safe and quit location
_Rex and Cheryl are wonderful hosts with a wealth of knowledge of the culture and area.
_The only down side was the on-demand hot water system. It gives unlimited hot water but only to one outlet at a time. So you can take as long a shower as you like but everyone else has to refrain from using the water until you're finish.

Rex and Cheryl were most gracious. They were very helpful with directions and suggestions.
The house was very comfortable, with beautiful garden and convenient location, very easy to catch a bus in to town.
We would definitely come back again, and highly recommend Casa Bella Mia
