FAQs:
Q: How do you get to Roatan?
A: Lots of options but they vary by time of the year. The major airlines are American out of Miami and Dallas, United out of Houston, Delta out of Atlanta, Sun country out of Minneapolis, Sunwing or other charters out of Toronto and Montreal. Spirit Airlines to San Pedro Sula, HN, then CM Airlines or others here. This info changes often so email me and I'll try to help
Q: Do I need local currency (Lempiras).
A: No, just bring US dollars (Canadian dollars and Euros are not generally accepted). Make sure the bills are in very good condition. There are cash machines as well. Make sure your bank knows your travel plans so they do not cancel your credit card for suspicious use. Credit cards are generally accepted for larger purchases but you can often get a better deal paying cash. If you'll be taking taxis, we can exchange money at bank rate for you to get you started, then just use US and get change in local Lempiras.
Q: What are prices there?
A: Prices for groceries and meals out are about the same as in the US and Canada. If you buy local products it's cheaper, American products cost a bit more. Alcohol is generally much cheaper.
Q: How do I stay connected electronically (wifi, phone)?
A: We have a fiber optic mesh system that lets you connect from several places on the property. We have upgraded to a upper level system but it is not US standard. I use various online communications systems - FB messenger, What's App, Zoom, Netflix...that work pretty well here.
There are also lots of temp plans that you can get short term that work well here. Phone calls or minutes to US cost about $.10 - 15 cents a minute while not using local WiFi. Best to put your phone on airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming charges.
Q: Are Roatan and Sandy Bay safe?
A: Yes, we think so. There is opportunistic crime mainly involving electronics left unattended. Rentals that are in local barrios or where people can pass freely very close to the house have more issues. Places with owners on site, dogs, and are well lit have very few problems. We, and our guests have had no issues with crime in 17 years. That said, use common sense as you would anywhere.
Q: What do I need to bring (and not bring)?
A: Bring less clothes that you think you need. We have a washer and clothes line. Quick drying, light clothes, light rain jacket, slip on shoes, bug spray that works for you, necessary medications (although most are cheap here and do not require prescriptions) are key. We have snorkel gear if you want to check out the reef, but if you have a good fitting mask and snorkel, bring it. Don't bother with tie-on shoes, socks, jewelry, beach towels, or hair dryer.
Q:Are the bugs bad?
A: The house is raised 10 feet and completely screened and on the beach with good breezes to minimize bugs. However, bring bug spray or you can buy it here for exploring. We keep the house very clean to deter any bugs inside, but leaving food and beverages out can attract bugs, so it's best to keep the house tidy.
Q: What should I buy when I arrive (and not buy)?
A: Buy whatever you would like to eat for the first few days. We go to the store every couple days and are happy to take you along. The house is stocked with a water cooler, spices, condiments, sugar, coffee filters, oils, vinegar, soaps, cleaning supplies, paper towels, TP... If you need anything that is not there, just ask.
Q: Do I need an international drivers license to drive there?
A: No. A valid drivers license from your country and state is fine.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 weeks. First trip to Roatan and we were NOT DISAPPOINTED. I believe this property is ideal for a couple that want a little getaway. Al and Sandra are great, easy spirits and easy to talk to. They answered all our questions and made sure had clean sheets and towels and plenty of water or anything else we needed. They met us and gave us an overview of the property and gave us some great suggestions for our stay. The property is quiet and serene, just what we were looking for. We deliberately stayed away from west bay and west end, we wanted quiet and we got it. The home had everything we needed. If we cooked we had everything we needed, fresh clean water to drink, literally anything we needed to be comfortable was there. The property is clean and comfortable. Al and Sandra gave us snorkels to use, which we did almost every day, we swam out to the second largest barrier reef in the world from the dock we had right in front of the property, no need to go anywhere! They gave us hammocks which we used almost daily in the afternoon to enjoy the afternoon breezes on the dock. Their doggos are the best, friendly and love to be loved on. If you want to slow down and relax, this is the place for you!

We had a wonderful time staying here at Sandra and Al’s place. Such nice welcoming people. Guest house was perfect for my Mother and I. A/C was much appreciated since we didn’t acclimate to the Roatan heat/humidity very well. Would recommend to anyone looking to stay at a nice spot not at a resory

Loved staying here for a long weekend. It was perfect, clean, easy to get to, and had great porch to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine at night. Owners were next door and were available if we needed anything at all but we didn't because the house had everything! Would book again!

We loved our time here. The host(s) have thought of everything you could possibly need and have it available for you! Their hospitality can’t be beat!
The screened in porch was so nice and the sunset views are astounding!
Snorkeling right off the dock was amazing too!
We can’t say enough good things about this property and the host(s)

Thanks Al and Sandra - we loved our stay at your cottage. The Island of Roatan was wonderful! Great people - good food and the snorkeling was very fun. Enjoyed the fresh picked Star Fruit for breakfast and the freshly roasted cashews that Al shared with us:)

We couldn’t have chosen better.
First of all: location, location, location.
Beautiful spot right on the beach. One of the only places not being overrun right now.
It is literally in front of spooky channel, the most unique snorkel spot we’ve been to.
It was quiet and beautiful. You can see the sunsets and beautiful mornings as well.
The hosts were so gracious. They loaned us their guitar (btw if you play, an awesome gift would be to bring strings) Sandra even brought us stuff from the store once. There are kayaks and they graciously loaned me a snorkel when mine was broken.
The tiny bit of advice would be that this is more fit for a couple than a group. The upstairs loft would be way too hot for much of the year.
If we ever come back to Roatan this would be the only place we would even consider.
Thank you Sandra and Al. We are truly grateful.

Sweet beach house right on the shore. Al and Sandra are truly nice people, we very much enjoyed our opportunity to visit their accomodation. The reef is literally a stone throw off shore, the kayak let's you get out there in seconds, if you prefer not to swim over. The dogs were great, not in the least bothersome and nice to spend time with if you are missing your dogs. Every recommendation was on point. We will be back.

Don't bother looking further, you've found your Roatan home at Al and Sandra's Spooky Channel guest house. My gosh, just look at the view from the screened and covered deck! Their's is the nicest coconut dappled beach in all of Sandy Bay. Snorkeling the reef from the convenient dock is a world apart, the best snorkeling we've experienced in the Caribbean. We found the guest house perfect for every need and comfort, and our hosts accommodating and supportive in every way possible. Sandra helped us resolve a medical problem by taking us to a good clinic and helping us navigate the protocols--talk about above and beyond all expectations! To sum up, the guest house, your hosts Al and Sandra, and the setting are simply wonderful. Welcome to Roatan!

Our stay started by being picked up at the airport by Sandra. Al and Sandra are awesome onsite owners! Very responsive to us when needed. She immediately started getting us up to speed with what to expect as this was our 1st time on the island. We stoped and bought some groceries on the way to the property which allowed us to be self sufficient from day one. The snorkeling in front of the property is amazing! The property has great access to the reef and the dock is a wonderful place to enjoy the sea breezes. All white sand and plenty of places to relax. We grilled on our deck and sat on the screened porch often. To get to West End or anywhere is walk to the street and get a cab. This is very convenient. Al and Sandra would let you know anytime they were heading out so we would have the ability to go with. The property is the most appointed property we have ever rented. They have gone above and beyond thinking about what people might need or want. Jack and Hope are the best on site security/friends you could ask for. I spent many nights outside with them enjoying the stars and weather. The bed is comfortable and the property is spacious. I would definitely rent this property again. Safety was never a concern and we met nothing but wonderful people during our stay. Al brought us to the ferry at the end of the week and that convenience cannot be undersold.

This location is perfect for a couple.
We loved the beautiful sunsets from the top deck of the pier there. The snorkeling and swimming right from the dock is so convenient. Al and Sandra living next door in the main house was so nice! They were always available to answer any questions we had. They're so hospitable and willing to help us. We had a good time going to a local brewery and also golfing on our last day there with them! Their dogs, Jack and Hope are great and made you feel safe at night! We miss them already!
We didn't need a rental car. We did a few excursions on the island and the taxi service is easy to get from their driveway.
Don't hesitate to book here!

This was a perfect casita for our 20 yr anniversary. For our first trip to HN, we wanted quiet, relaxed with access to the main road if we wanted to get out. That is exactly what we had. We kayaked around the reef which was right off the dock. We visited the more touristy area but loved coming back to our quiet, peaceful place. From the booking to our time on the island, Al and Sandra answered every question, gave us helpful information and made us feel like friends. They picked us up and dropped us off at the airport, took us to the grocery store and other places. It truly felt like visiting friends who were showing us this beautiful island they call home. We did lots of research before coming and knew what to expect. I highly recommend doing the same. Al and Sandra work hard daily to keep their property beautiful and it shows. I would I highly recommend it and we look forward to visiting them again. Our furry friends-Jack, Hope and Nugget💕 we will miss you and look forward to seeing you again, too.

We had a wonderful getaway. The Spooky Channel guest house was just what we were looking for. Relaxing beachfront location off the beaten path. Great snorkeling in the reef not far from the dock. Our hosts provided great hospitality.

Al and Sandra were amazing, the house is perfect, and the nightly visits from Hope and Jack made our day. Thank you so much for the wonderful visit with you. Highly Recommend!!!

Expectations exceeded & they were high.
Al picked us up at the airport & took us to the grocery store. Appreciated!
The house, perfect! More than we needed & more wonderful than the pictures. It had everything, dishes, utensils, gadgets, etc. Propane grill outside, water gear, floats, snorkeling, etc.
Spent hours on the deck w/ the ocean breaking over the reef. Rained some days... still beautiful, just a different beautiful.
Area was slow & quiet but w/ West End nearby.
Went a couple times & it was a quick, cheap cab ride. (Thanks to Sandra/Al's advice.) Easy walk to back of the property & they'll honk. Want a ride? Wave & they'll stop. Set & confirm the cost.
Great times w/ Al & Sandra. Good people & we don't like people.
They know everything about the island. Have a question, just ask.
Jack & Hope are out at night & are great. (Buy some Milk-Bone maro snacks) They protect the property & like a snack or five. Don't like dogs... what the hell is wrong with you? Kidding.
Al lent me his kettle grill to cook BBQ (non-Texas style, Al) He took us to a local meat market. Awesome.
Al is a font of useful information. We all ate together & we had a great time.
More we want to say but will end with this... It's rare to find people with truly, good souls. Not because they are thousands of miles away, but because there are just so few. Sandra & Al are two of those people and we feel we have friends who just happen to be thousands of miles away.
Already planning our next trip!

If you’re wanting a quiet place in Sandy Bay, this is the place. Al and Sandra are excellent hosts; they transported us to and from the airport, took us grocery shopping, as well as on some fun outings. The home is stocked with everything you need, and if there’s something you do need, Al and Sandra happily share.
Hope and Jack keep the property secure and made us feel safe.
Taxi access is super easy and affordable from the end of the driveway.
We can’t wait to return.

The owners were amazing, and gave so much good advice and details. The area was clean and very well organized. It’s such a nice little hidden gem right by a really fun dock that you can snorkel at the end for beginners and just paddles away from the spooky channel. I snorkeled every single day and it’s so large and vast you are always finding more interesting places. I ate mangos, water coconut and a few other fruits from the trees. We pretty much stayed the whole time at the condo and property but the west end is fun too. The only thing to watch out for the huge roaches that won’t harm you, and make sure to bring a lot of bug spray for the Sand Flies. I had an absolutely wonderful unforgettable time, and you will as well along with falling in love with the owners and their dog!

Just what we were looking for. Relaxing on a beachfront home with view of water and awsome snorkling from dock. Clean, nicely located beautiful grounds. Can not wait to come back

Al and Sandra are the perfect hosts who make you feel like family. Jack and Hope are the sweetest pups and promise excellent protection every night. The property is quaint and lovely. Very clean and welcoming; felt like home! It’s full of outdoor activities including snorkeling in the clearest water and kayaking around beautiful coral and grassy landscapes. Having a private dock to enjoy a breezy lazy day or swimming around was immeasurable on the hottest days. You can pull the lounge chairs to the water and sunbathe or keep in the sand under the palm tree shading to read or nap. We took morning walks and enjoyed the sunset daily. We had a car and ventured out around the entire island. Highly recommend a car if you love adventure. This was our first trip to Roatan and we are elated to have spent it renting from Al and Sandra. Truly a memorable experience and relaxing vacation!

We had a great time on our 1st trip to Roatan. Al and Sandra were awesome to be available if needed but at the same time, allowed us our privacy. The snorkeling right off the dock was amazing! We can't wait to go again.

We wanted some quiet beach time with close snorkeling and this place was perfect!! Al was very helpful and respectful of our privacy! We enjoyed his conversations and wish we could have met Sandra, who was on vacation of her own at the time. Lovely place for a couple!

Our host Al was wonderful to us (Sandra was traveling) and fun to hang with. Miss our cute little casita already as we do doggies Jack and Hope, and kitty Nugget. Our view was gorgeous, and most days we snorkeled at the reef just off shore from our front door. It was fabulous!!
5.0
My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the guest house! We appreciated having Al and Sandra next door to answer questions and help us navigate our our first trip to the island. The screened porch is perfect for relaxing during the day and watching the sunset at night and we loved getting visits from Hope and Jack in the evening! The property, which is beautifully maintained with palms and fruit trees, is just steps away from the water with access to a dock and incredible snorkeling! The property is walkable to some restaurants/ shops, but a vehicle or use of a taxi (which you can catch at the end of their driveway) will be ideal to head to the West end, which is more touristy and has sugar sand beaches.
The location/ property was great for what we were looking for as a vacation away from winter in Canada! A few things to note when you're planning your trip; the house is not centrally located in a shopping or tourist district and provides a more laid back atmosphere. Swimming from the beach is not what this spot offers, but if you like water activities and snorkeling, there's no better place. We'd recommend this property to folks that love four-legged friends! There's lots of friendly local dogs that you'll meet on walks down the beach, as well as Hope and Jack who oversee the property.
We had many great experiences on this trip and came back with stories to tell! We hope to be back to the island and see more of Roatan in the future!

Sandra and Al’s bungalow on the beach at Roatan is an awesome place to get away and just relax. Wonderful snorkeling right off the pier! The beach is quiet, the water is all kinds of blue and the weather is perfect! Al picked us up at the airport and dropped us off when it was time to leave. Great hosts, great house and great getaway!

Absolutely one of the BEST places we've ever stayed. Al and Sandra are just simply wonderful hosts. The location is just as the pictures in the listing show: white sandy beach, turquoise ocean water; friendly doggies. And far enough away from the road to be reasonably quiet. Snorkeling was fun all the way out to the reef; island food was fresh, and the natives easy to get along with. I would recommend a rental car just to make things a bit easier, but taxis will pick you up at the end of the drive.

Beautiful location on somewhat of a private beach with a peer and reef only 800ft from shore. we had the access to snorkeling gear and kayaks. Location is separated from the tourist area of west end by 3 miles, we rented a car to enjoy the countryside. Owners live next door and they have 2 great friendly dogs. If you want your own cabin on your own secluded beach with access to snorkeling and kayaking and relaxing in the sun would definetly recomend this location.

Sandra and Al were some of the best hosts we have ever had. They go above and beyond to make sure you have a comfortable stay as well as good information about the island.
The property is so beautiful and well cared for! The dogs and the cat were literally a highlight for us as well. We are animal lovers and it makes the trip that much more amazing to have them around! ❤️ Highly recommend a stay with them!!

Thank you to Al and Sandra for your hospitality and insight on island life. We had such a great vacation. We snorkeled, saw whales (which we were told is rare), swam with dolphins, held monkeys and sloths and birds and explored the whole island. Travel to Camp Bay Beach-do not miss it, and then go just a little farther and have lunch at La Sirena and see the Hummingbirds AT YOUR TABLE! Al and Sandra’s place is perfect for activities-not in all the heavy tourist areas but only a short 5-15 minute drive. This gave us the perfect mix of accessibility and beautiful quiet seclusion. The beach in front is pretty much private with the occasional passer-by. You can lay in the sun, you can lay in the shade of the palm trees. You can snorkel just off the dock in the most beautiful water you’ve ever seen! Hope and Jack (their dogs) were an added bonus for me! We’ll be back for sure-can we just go ahead and move in?? 😬

Made the best out of our visit!
I'd like to comment on the hosts as well as the property--both were awesome! The hosts picked us up at the airport and took us to the grocery store to pick up items on our way to the guest house. They gave input from that time until we left to make sure we had the best, most fun time we could have. They have lived on the island for years, so they know what foods to get where, what to see locally, and how best to get there. Any questions? Just ask! They live next door to the guest house. If you need anything at all--condiments, toiletries, etc.--they will help! The guest house was very comfortable and cute. And right on the beach with access to a dock where you can swim, dive, and hang out with other authorized tourists and locals. Under the guest house are a lot of water toys, including a sea kayak and everything you need for fun. You could stay a week and never leave the property! Can't wait to go back!

We’ve stayed at Al and Sandra’s beautiful property 6 or 7 times now, that probably says it all about what a great place this is to vacation. Al and Sandra are excellent hosts, always available for good advice and information and fun to spend time with. Both of them do everything possible to maintain the property in a pristine condition. Where else can you find a superb reef right out the front door? If you’re looking for sand, sea, and relaxation, you’ll love this property….

This place is excellent. Quiet, on basically a private beach steps away, this property is deeply relaxing and a perfect escape. Property itself was clean and very well stocked: hosts provided towels, soap, condiments, chilled water - even lent me snorkel and fins when I asked. The porch is a perfect place to read a book or watch the ocean, and screen means bugs stay out. Just feet from the private dock are reefs teeming with life, I recommend a peaceful morning swim highly. Al (I didn't meet Sandra) was also phenomenal host - helpful, friendly, an absolute island expert. Please be warned you may want to stay forever.

Staying here was like being at our very own exclusive private resort in a well equipped, comfortable, guesthouse on beautiful grounds with two of the most friendly and generous hosts you are every likely to meet! Sandra and Al are natural hosts and their love for what they do and where they live, shines through brightly. Their house is close to the guest house and they are always available and willing to help and answer any questions about the local area.
We shall misss picking star fruits and apple bananas for breakfast from their beautiful grounds every morning. Snorkelling on the reef off the dock and in the area was out of this world and kayaking to the near by mangroves was lots of fun. We would love to come here again.
