About this cottage rental
Come enjoy our tiny, cozy 672 sq ft lakefront cottage with lovely mountain and sunset views perfectly situated overlooking Lake Lure. A beautiful, brief one hour drive from bustling Asheville, then four short steps from our quiet road and you will enter the top floor of the Turtle House, renovated to include modern amenities while still retaining it's rustic charm.
On the front entrance level we have one full bath (linens provided) with stack washer/dryer, vanity sink and tub/shower. Also on the top floor are two bedrooms. The first bedroom has a queen-size bed, ceiling fan and view of lake. Our second bedroom has a bunkbed with full-size beds above and below. At the end of the hall is an upstairs porch. Sit back, relax on our glider or chaise lounges and take in the views from your own private retreat.
Downstairs is the living area with original knotty pine paneling, comfy sofa and chairs. Our home entertainment options consist of books, games, and satellite tv.
Adjacent to the living room is our kitchen complete with stove, oven, fridge, standard coffee pot, toaster, microwave and dishwasher to help clean up. If you'd like to move mealtime outside to the back porch, fire up the gas grill and keep an eye on what's cooking from our classic glider and chairs. When it's time to dine, make yourselves comfortable at the picnic table overlooking the lake. Outdoor living is pretty sweet at the Turtle House!
While you are enjoying the lakeside scenery, mossy terrain, boathouse deck and lake, you will find for your convenience the second bathroom located off the back porch. Minimalist yet functional, it provides easy access to shower, sink and commode and is especially handy for those just finished swimming in the lake. This bathroom is winterized from October-April.
Take a few steps from the back porch towards the lake and you will be lured to the 10 stone stairs leading down to the deck on top of the boathouse complete with dining area, lounging chairs and some of the best views on Lake Lure. Downstairs from the boathouse deck is the dock where you will find a 2 person kayak and a pedal boat for getting around the lake, both included with your stay. 5 universal fit life vests are in storage on the boathouse deck.
The Turtle House is located on the east side of the lake on a large quiet, cove with a no wake zone, so that swimming, kayaking and paddling are safe and fun. We are now a Certified Wildlife Habitat, an idea inspired by the turtles who occasionally come to visit our 'back yard'. Thank you in advance for not fishing on the property and helping us care for our wild, lake friends!
Selected as one of the ten most beautiful man-made lakes in the world by National Geographic, Lake Lure was built in 1925 and consists of approximately 1500 acres with 27 miles of shoreline. Enjoy the options for adventure or simply lounge on the boathouse deck whilst enjoying the lake and mountain views.
We look forward to welcoming you to the Turtle House!

Nice location right on the lake, though a little remote from restaurants etc., precisely why we stayed there. It is rustic and quite small but everything you need is provided - from kayak and life jackets to a full working kitchen.

We loved this property. The views are amazing and having a dock on the lake is the best. We enjoyed swimming, kayaking and just lounging on the dock.
The house is the perfect size and was well stocked with everything we needed.

Spent a quiet few days. Great for relaxing and paddling around on the lake. Quaint cottage, but just what we needed.

We enjoyed kayaking on the lake. The dock area is a beautiful spot to hang out. The house is small, as others have mentioned, but perfect for two people.

The owner of this place was very rude. I will not ever go to this place again.

Perfectly kitschy, inviting and comfortable. It felt like a friend offered a place to stay - familiar. Everything you need, and then some. Thank you for a much needed break!

We were very pleased that what was on the website was what we found. Quaint, clean, comfortable, and the most beautiful view on the lake. We hope to return someday.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend away! The cottage is just as described. I looked at several other small rentals but am so happy with my decision to rent this place (they didn't have the same view). The view from the dock is exceptional. The cove is perfect for kayaking and the paddle boat. Although all of the neighboring houses we occupied, we felt very isolated in the cottage due to the trees. The house itself is small but full of vintage charm. It was stocked with all of the necessities. We actually slept very well in the full/queen bed. If you are picky about pillows, maybe bring your own (which we always do). We spent most of our time on the upper and lower decks (the view is amazing) and enjoyed the use of the kayak and paddle boat. It is within a 10–15-minute drive to the grocery store and Highlands Bar and Grille (awesome brunch). We would definitely rent there again!

We stayed at the Terrapin for Spring Break 2023. (I’m late with my review) Wonderful location and the cottage was perfect for us. Warning the bedrooms are small but fine for me and my friend and our two teen girls. A queen size bed in one and bunk beds in the other. There are dresser drawers but no closets in the rooms. There’s a balcony with a great view off from the bedrooms. The bathroom was nice and clean, nice shower.
Downstairs, the stairs are steep, is the living room and kitchen. There’s a couch, chair, gas fireplace, small dining table and full working kitchen. Really appreciated the utensils, pots and pans that were plentiful. We cooked everyday with no problem. The girls discovered the hammock so they spent a lot time there. There are more steep stairs that lead down to a beautiful two story deck. Top deck had table and chairs to relax same for the bottom but there is also the boat launch there also. With the lake being drained there was a hazardous drop off were water should have been. So we let the girl explore a little and made the area off limits for the rest of the stay.
Like I mentioned the lake was drained, so all the great amenities that came with the cottage kayak, swimming etc. we couldn’t utilize. But Our gracious host refunded us a portion because of this!
The location is great right up the road from Chimney Rock! My girlfriend and I will be back during the summer with our teens and we will be staying at the Terrapin!

We LOVED the location of this house. It was right on the water in a perfect cove for swimming. The turtles and wildlife were a thrill for my kids. While the home has had many reviews complimenting cleanliness, we did have some issues with general cleaning. We still enjoyed our stay and would love to come back.

Property was exactly as advertised, even better when you see it for real. The cabin was cozy, comfy, very clean,& well appointed. Bed was comfy w/excellent ceiling fan. We were never too hot or cold inside. The outdoor space is fabulous. Great views from all deck/balcony levels. Nicely arranged to catch shade at different levels throughout the day so you don't roast. The cove is a no wake zone so swimming and paddling felt safe. Houses on either side are close but thickly wooded in between so it felt private even though we had neighbors. Plenty of floaties available to use too. Good grocery store is 10 min. away. We will definitely consider staying again.

Loved this cute cottage. It is very small and not recommended for people with mobility issues, but it is well worth the price. We spent most of our time outside either on the two decks or the dock. The paddle boat and kayak are fun!

Had a lovely long weekend with my sister's who were in town. The cabin is cozy and the area/cove is quiet. We enjoyed it a lot. It may not be for adults who do not like bunk beds to sleep on.

We love Lake Lure, and and the wife and I stay at the Lake Lure Spa in Inn almost every summer for a conference. This new years we wanted to try someplace new with our kids and with better direct access to the water. This place was exactly what we needed.
The house is small just as it is described, but there are so many little places where you can relax and be by yourself. There is a balcony off of the bedrooms that looks over the water with plenty of places to sit and lounge. There is a covered porch off of the kitchen over looking the water with seating for two. There are two decks on the water as well.
When you walk in from your car, you are on the second floor with the bedrooms. That is very convenient when you are bringing your luggage in and out. Downstairs (watch your head) is an ample sized living room / kitchen area. We spent most of our time out and about, but it was nice for meals and for watching the ball drop on TV for new years while we listened to fireworks echoing across the lake.
Shopping in nearby towns was easy and adventurous. These are the kinds of roads you search for in a small convertible stick shift vehicle. That is not what I was driving on this trip, but I was in my head.
We had a little internet issue when we first arrived, but it was quickly resolved by our hostess over the phone. Overall... this was an easy trip with plenty of space for us to relax and ring in the new year. We will add this to our places to visit again.

We very much enjoyed our stay. There were so many ducks landing on the lake our last day. My daughter and I sat on the porch for an hour watching them. It is a very cozy cottage and we hope to visit again.

We (one adult and two teens) had a great time. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate, so we didn't get a chance to see the sunset on the lake. :( The house is small, which was 100% fine for us, but maybe not great for larger people. (not much room to get around the furniture in the bedrooms). Perfect for what we needed. Clean and comfortable in a beautiful setting.

The turtle house was a cozy home, with great accommodations. Perfect for a small family. Great outdoor seating!! The views are beautiful!!
My only complaint, with zero fault of the owner, I should have researched a bit more, the pedal boat and canoe are both only two seaters.
I wanted to take my kiddo out on the pedal boat, however, she’s still a bit small. I would have had her sit on my lap, but my husband (aka safety patrol) looked up that it wasn’t safe to do so. A canoe that all of us could have fit in, would have been great. 🤷🏻♀️

The house was perfect for two people. It’s small but it’s fine, especially if spending time on the lake. We enjoyed the ducks and turtles. It was pretty quiet, and the water was perfect for swimming (end of September). We never even left once we had our groceries. We will be back!

This is a cute property with beautiful scenery. It is extremely small, like the description states. It’s fine if you aren’t spending much time inside and just sleeping and showering there. The only issue we had was the bathroom. The owner did warn me before we came that there was an issue with the washer/dryer and they had to put up a curtain because they had to take the door frame out. I did not realize that meant there was no door to the only bathroom in the house. I guess I misunderstood but that sucked. Thankfully it was just me, my husband and two kids but if you wanted ANY privacy you had to go to the weird outside half bath that does have a door, it’s just
outside. It had all the basic necessities and the views made up for the rest. The bathroom issue is the only reason I’m giving it a 4/5.

We vacationed 2 summers in a row here!
This is the 2nd year that my fiance, my 8 year old daughter, and I have came to this cottage (both in June!)! We frequently visit the Lake Lure area and have thoroughly enjoyed staying here each time! The views are amazing and the place is so cozy, we never want to leave! Love the dock and water toys, this will not be our last time back! The owners are quick to respond and help with any situation, and the cottage is fully stocked and supplied, and everything we needed was there! The location and scenery is our favorite by far!! It definitely feels like a home away from home!

Beautiful property and location, excellent management. We had a great time. Thank you Karen!

Nice place but tiny
Had all you need, with a huge deck, the house is smaller than it looks in the pictures, lots to do in nearby Chimney Rock. We left a day early, too small, and there was construction going on nearby.

Nice and Cozy!
It was clean and cute. Love the lay out. The Lake is beautiful and a wonderful place to enjoy coffee and the sunrise, and a glass of wine and the sunset.
