History
Biarritz is a Basque name with locative suffix -itz (cp. Isturitz) attested Bearriz in 1170, Bearids in 1186, Bearritz in 1249.
Biarritz has long made its fortune from the sea: as a whaling settlement from the twelfth century onwards. In the 18th century, doctors recommended that the ocean at Biarritz had therapeutic properties, inspiring patients to make pilgrimages to the beach for alleged cures for their ailments.
Biarritz became more renowned in 1854 when Empress Eugenie (the wife of Napoleon III) built a palace on the beach (now the Hôtel du Palais). European royalty, including British monarchs Queen Victoria and King Edward VII (who caused a minor scandal when he called H. H. Asquith to kiss hands at Biarritz in 1908 rather than return to London for the purpose),[1] and the Spanish king Alfonso XIII, were frequent visitors.
Biarritz's casino (opened 10 August 1901) and beaches make the town a notable tourist centre for Europeans and East Coast North Americans. The city has also become a prime destination for surfers from around the world, developing a nightlife and surf-based culture.
At the end of World War II in Europe, the U.S. Army's Information and Educational Branch was ordered to establish an overseas university campus for demobilized American service men and women in the French resort town of Biarritz. Under General Samuel L. McCroskey, the hotels and casinos of Biarritz were converted into quarters, labs and class spaces for U.S. service personnel. The University opened 10 August 1945 and approximately 10,000 students attended an 8-week term. This campus was set up to provide a transition between army life and subsequent attendance at a university in the USA, and therefore students attended for just one term. After three successful terms the G.I. University closed in March 1946 (see G. I. American Universities).

Love the location for a visit to Bayonne and Barritz. Fantastic little balcony with beautiful view of the coast and beach below. Compact apartment with parking that has everything. Bus service works well, must recommend Basque Museum in Bayonne. Had a wonderful time, without out planning happened to be in the middle of July’s Bayonne Festival. Fun experience.

Booked apartment location for location. Great ocean view right on the water. The apartment is functional yet quirky. Construction going on so building entry leaves little to be desired. Apartment located on a downstairs floor with very dark entry. Need to get lights on timer down by entry as opposed to down the hall. Size of apartment ok but bed is a Murphy bed. It was comfortable along with sofa when Murphy bed not in use. Bathroom is small but functional. Bathroom lacks a door and only has a drape. This is an issue if you have privacy concerns with partner. Biggest issues is that apartment lacks ventilation unless sliding door open. This is great, however, when we were there surf was exceptionally large and room was extremely noisy. It was hard to sleep and hot in room if sliding door closed. A fan would help. Hosts were gracious and easy to communicate along with being responsive. Lastly, washer was broken which was a key reason we booked this apartment. There was a laundromat nearby that we used. Overall, enjoyed out stay and highly recommend Biarritz and would go again.

The fantastic ocean view is not overrated. It is fantastic. The balcony overlooks the beautiful beach and the ocean. The sound of the waves and the views are amazing. Everything on the beach front and in town is walkable.

Great location and accommodation but poor experience because of untold renovation
There were renovation in the building and in the balcony almost whole time that We spent time there. We got the information of that renovation one day forehand, and didn’t feel that it was fear thing to do. Morning started with much of noice and men in our balcony so had to close the curtains and couldnt enjoy the view or the sea. The accommodation itself was great and clean. We got some refund too afterwards.

Stunning location for a beach stay
The location can't be beat - on the ocean-front, away from the hustle and bustle but within easy walking access to everything, including wide choice of shops and restaurants. The apartment is tiny but well planned, with lots of storage space. Cooking facilities are not suited to any major cooking - but quite fine for preparing breakfast or snacks (note, the fridge is very small). The bed was very comfortable and easily opened/closed, but a queen size (not king, as indicated). Our host was accessible and communicative, and the on-site concierge friendly and very helpful. Highly recommended, as long as you don't need a lot of space or plan to do any significant cooking. P.S. we loved falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the waves crashing against the the shore!

Assez bonne

Awesome view, perfect address, stylish compact living!
Clean and cool studio, a lot of smart technical solutions and also great taste for decoration. Just by the beach, could not be closer to the waves. The casino and downtown Biarritz just a few minutes walk away. Second floor, safe and quite.

Inside, this studio really worked. Outside, it was stupendous!
How many times have you washed under your arms in the shower while at the same time tracking the last big breaker on the high tide beach? Imagine a 1000 square foot one-bedroom apartment swoosh-shrunken to a 10x20 space that has more storage space than your mother ever had, every kitchen and home appliance known to man, all the beach toys, and then ... THEN:
The. Most. Fabulous. Beach. View. You. Have. Ever. Seen. !!!
Take a look at the low-tide photo - that's exactly what you see. And the mid-tide experience with the booming surf and swells is riveting, either from your balcony, or the few steps away onto the sand itself. High-tide is so dramatic - often in tune with the incredible crescendo of chromatic sunsets - that you say, maybe, let's just stay and watch!
We are a couple that like to have our own space, usually need some time on our own, get bored by the usual stunning beach ... and we spent 16 nights here and absolutely hated to go. We loved Biarritz shopping and cafes, but we spent most of our meals out in and around the small nearby quartier of St. Charles.
I'm not usually a gusher, but this is a super super place with a 10x view. Go there!

View was great but studio was tiny
It has a Murphy wall bed that you have to put up and down. Kitchen was n a closet as was washing machine.
We had a problem with washing machine, resolution was not handled well.
We liked the location.

Beautiful, pristine beachfront rental
Isabel's apartment is pristine! It was the perfect size for us, as we weren't planning on spending much time inside. The view can't be beat (you can see the beach from the bathroom)! The balcony is perfect for eating breakfast or a glass of wine at sunset. The kitchen was well equipped for us to make it through our first morning (coffee, biscuits etc.) and there is a small grocery store very close by. Isabel's welcome packet is thorough and has great dinner and shopping recomendations. The best part was the location of the apartment -- it's on the quieter end of the beach, but still a short walk to the bustling center or Biarritz.
Overall I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our trip. Isabel was helpful and gracious and really went above and beyond the typical host. We will definitely be back!

We had a wonderful week!
The apartment was really nice. Smart and modern layout, well equipped for our needs and with an optimal localization with a beautiful waterfront view.
Direct access to the beach and a nice walk along the shore to the city center with it's many possibilities for good eating - and for shopping too.
I recommend the apartment for two people!

Great studio in Biarritz !
We spent a wonderful week in Biarritz : we studio is perfectly located, with a great view on the sea : having a drink on the balcony, looking at the sunshine on the sea, hearing the sound of the waves is absolutely fabulous!
The studio is well fitted, the bed is very good, and there is a great view on the sea from the shower ! Around the studio : nice villas, the "Grand palace", and a direct access to the beach. Perfect for 2 guys to spend a great stay in front of the ocean :-)

I was planning to visit the Basque region and stay somewhere by the sea to relax and finish some work and have fun. I really wanted San Sebastián but didn't find something by the sea and ended up with this place which turned out to be better than San Sebastián.Biarritz is a charming small city (more intimate than San Sebastián) with brilliant food and activities. The studio I stayed in was very modern and just right for a person or a couple looking for some time away.Isabel was gracious and very helpful, everything I needed was there in the studio which probably has one of the best locations and views in the city. You can easily move around the city walking, everything is close by and it's very nice to walk around.
