DRIVEWAY
The gravel drive can be steep for some vehicles that are especially low to the ground, such as sports cars and Mini-Coopers, etc. The owners have a truck and a typical sedan and have no trouble getting up the driveway. Guests may park on the lower part of the driveway if they would prefer. Four-wheel drive is not required, but if you are renting a vehicle, this option might be a good choice for the mountains - especially in winter. Chains for tires are another good option if you are visiting in the winter and you are concerned about getting around. The driveway is plowed when there is snow or ice. If you have any questions, please be sure and let us know.
Note: Four-wheel drive is not required, but is helpful when there is snow or ice. In cases of winter weather, if you do not have four wheel drive, we recommend parking at the bottom of the driveway.
TIPS FOR DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS
The key to driving in the mountains, especially steep gravel passes, is to drive with confidence and keep your momentum. If you are driving on a road that is steep or problematic go low and slow - about 6-12 miles an hour - and do not stop. Also, GPS is fairly accurate for businesses, but for residences and small mountain roads it can be inaccurate. We suggest using our directions to get to the cabin initially. If you have questions about how to get somewhere, please let us know. We are happy to help!

PENLAND & THE HOME'S HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
The home was built by artist/sculptor Bill Brown, the first director of Penland School of Crafts after the founder, Lucy Morgan, retired.
Penland School is important to the region of Appalachia because in the 1920s Miss Lucy, as she was often called, provided education and resources to local women teaching them how to weave and sell their handmade goods. This developed into a cottage industry that helped to improve the circumstances of these women and also gave birth to Penland.
The school now provides instruction in all areas of craft from weaving, pottery, glass and ceramics to metalwork, printmaking, letterpress, photography and much more. The campus occupies 420 acres on the mountain at the other end of the same road as Conley House. Visually inspiring all by itself, the campus is open for tours by appointment and has a catalog of courses that are open to the public and are designed for a range of skill levels.
Also open to the public is Penland Gallery, which offers fine craft in all media made by skilled craftspeople from all over the world. The school also has a coffee shop and gift shop! They love to have visitors, so stop on by! Because of the school and the natural beauty of the mountains, the area is filled with artists and craftspeople, making it a truly unique area of the country that you'll want to explore.

The host was outstanding. The house is very well appointed, clean and comfortable. We highly recommend and we already plan to return.

It was wonderful. The house is set on a ridge with a fabulous view of Mt. Mitchell. The interior is lovely and filled with pieces created by local artists. All of the furniture--beds, sofas, etc.--are handsome and very comfortable (even for people with "grumpy" backs). Kitchen and bathrooms are very well stocked with just about everything you might need. I give this property an A+++ and we are picky!

We travel quite often and have to say this rental property is now at the top of our list. This home and yard was immaculate upon our arrival mid July 2024 in cleanliness and organization. The view of the Blue Ridge Parkway from every area is awesome. The floor plan was exactly what we were hoping for my wife and I and another couple. With two separate huge bedrooms, king beds, great baths, views and all connected with an open common area/kitchen. No to forget the detached Studio Apartment.
The kitchen was my favorite place to spend most of my time. Equipped with a complete French Press coffee bar, professional grade appliances, cookware and utensils I didn't need to bring ANY of my gear. I was able to prepare several new delicious dishes for our friends while taking advantage of a complete pantry of spices and other condiments. Also, just around the corner was a variety of fresh herbs including regular & Purple Basil, Oregano, Parsley, Mint, Rosemary +++.
Our plan is to come back in the Fall or early winter and hunker down again for a week or so and do very little while enjoying this amazing retreat. Chef Don, Family & Friends

We've traveled to North Carolina for many years to take a nice summer break. This is the best place we've found! An immaculate house with an incredible view. The artwork and unique architecture set this place apart. Lisa (the hostess) was super responsive and helpful. This was a trip we will always remember!!!

Great stay at this updated cabin with lovely Mountain views. Lisa was very responsive to all our questions , check in/out was very easy. We saw a family of deer in the yard every evening. Spent an afternoon visiting the historic Penland School of Crafts right down the road from home. Had a lovely trip and will be delighted to stay at this home again on our next trip!

One of the best, most relaxing, well furnished, unique properties we have visited. Three days in and I was still finding arts, mineral displays, and books to keep me engaged. Plus the view is amazing.

Beautiful home with spectacular views! Everything about our stay was perfect! Lisa was a very gracious host with providing information about the home, local sites, and current events during our visit to the area. We can't wait to return and hope to get the chance to stay here again!

This review is for the sister property Doug's Way. Well maintained cabin with an artistic side, and beautiful views. Plenty of amenities and very organized for a comfortable stay. Communication with Lisa was excellent and she provided lots of helpful information for the stay.

We loved our stay near Penland School of Craft. The property was easy to check into, had a comfortable open floor plan, and an incredible long range Mountain View. Both rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious. Lisa also had a packnplay for my 1.5 year old son which was nice.
The landscaping is gorgeous, and we were able to pick fresh blueberries, blackberries and mint right in the property.
I hope to come back soon!

My daughter took a week long summer camp at Penland Craft School so we decided to make a vacation out of it and stay nearby with the grandparents. The location of the rental was perfect being just 10 minutes from the Penland campus. The house itself was beautiful, surrounded by trees and flowers and humming birds and bunnies, with stunning views from every room. The layout is perfect for two couples and one child/teen with two primary suites, one which has a pull out sofa. Everything we needed for a comfortable stay was provided, the beds were comfortable, there were games, books, and beautiful pottery and art everywhere. Bring groceries because the remote location is not close to many shopping or dining options, but it's worth the peace and quiet.

The views are exactly as described! The house is well equipped and laid out for 2 couples. My parents who are avid birders loved walking along the dirt road with their binoculars. It is also ideally situated for the Blue Ridge Parkway, Penland is down the road, and other walks are nearby. Highly Recommended!

Beautiful views of the mountains everywhere in and on the property. Bed was very comfortable and the property is very secluded and private.
The only issue I had was when I turned on the bathroom heater it made a pop sound and didn’t come on. I texted Lisa to tell her this in case of a possible electrical danger and never heard back from her

The Conley House itself is a work of art. The place was not only beautiful on the inside, but on the outside as well. Gorgeous views from every room, glorious sunrise and sunsets, and fully functioning as a home away from home. My husband and two of my favorite cousins enjoyed every moment! We will return!

What a relaxing escape to the mountains!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our 4-day visit to the mountains of Western NC, made all the more special by staying at this beautiful home. The home itself was even more lovely than the photos, and we noticed right away the local pottery and crafts throughout the rooms. The kitchen was well appointed, the bedroom and bath nicely stocked, and the living room very comfortable, with electronic systems that were easy to use. We enjoyed taking in the tranquility of the mountain view from the patio each morning, and the entire property was beautifully maintained, peaceful and serene!
Our host, Lisa, was so helpful, from the time of booking to the end of our stay. She provided a wonderful brochure of local attractions, which we used daily - from our visit to a Penland artist studio, to a hike to view the amazing Linville Falls, and finally for our visit to a few art galleries in Bakersville. We met the nicest people along the way, and plan to visit these mountains again soon. We highly recommend this lovely home and Lisa as an excellent host for a wonderful stay in the mountains!

Perfect Stay
The location is completely secluded with a beautiful view, but a short drive from town, the home itself is beautiful, well-furnished and stocked, and comfortable, and Lisa was communicative and accommodating. Internet connection and speeds were great. Would stay again in a heartbeat.

Beautiful home and view
We very much enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home. Our mornings began with coffee and breakfast on the back porch soaking in the gorgeous mountain views. We spent our days out hiking and exploring. Carver's Gap to Grassy Ridge Bald was an excellent hike and just under a 30 minute drive. Our favorite activity was tubing on the North Toe river with Loafer's Glory, just 15 minutes from the house. At the end of the day it was great to relax on the back porch or around the fire pit. The kids loved exploring the property. They found blackberries and blueberries and saw deer a couple of times. The house had everything we needed for cooking and grilling meals. Items like laundry detergent and toilet paper were provided which was very convenient. We appreciated the art and handmade items in the home as well. The owner was very attentive, answered any questions very quickly and checked in on us a couple times to make sure we were enjoying our stay and had everything we needed.

Beautiful Elegant lodge for a wonderful getaway
Love this property. The combination of the cool mountain air, and the peaceful surrounding make this a great retreat lodge. The great view of the green misty mountains, clear night sky and the fireflies in the summer night just fill your heart with peace & tranquility. The immediate garden is also a joy ... well taken care with stock of Mint, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Blueberry etc. Last but not least, the lodge is spotless, it's all the modern amenities from washer & dryer, jacuzzi, wifi, stove etc
What else could one ask for .. Would give a 5/5 anytime .. would sure look for a return trip in the next future.

Family trip to the Mountains
Our family of three (incl 8 yr old daughter), along with my in-laws stayed in Conley House for a week. The cabin is just as beautiful and well appointed as described in the listing. It was just perfect! Lisa is a wonderful host, very communicative, and has thought of every detail to make your stay above and beyond. From fresh coffee beans in the grinder, to bath salts for the glorious bath, and kitchen tools for cooking in the chef’s kitchen, you can tell she wanted your stay to be special.
The view of the mountains from the back windows is so beautiful. We enjoyed getting up early and watch the colors change on the mountainside as the sun rose.
As a family, we enjoyed hiking to nearby Linville Falls, Crabtree Falls, Round Bald, Grandfather Mountain, Beacon Heights and snow tubing. These hikes were all within reasonable distance and a beautiful drive through the mountains . For the night that we ate out, we dined at Holler Mountain Restaurant, a quaint restaurant with deliscious home style food.
The town of Penland is quiet, artistic, and adorned with unique pottery shops. This cabin and town is exactly our speed...slow and quiet, giving us time to enjoy exploring nature and each other. I would definitely recommend Lisa and Rick’s, 5-stars all the way!

I can't say enough about this cabin. It's quiet and beautiful - the views are amazing. Secluded enough to be private - but close enough to civilization to be convenient. The attention to detail makes the stay extra special - from the unique artwork throughout the cabin to the musical wind chimes on the deck - a very homey, comfortable feel overall. Customer service is great - Lisa went above and beyond to make this vacation happen for my family. I will be back and highly recommend to anyone planning a mountain vacation.

One of the best cabins we have ever rented!
Best view in the North Carolina mountains! Home is very well appointed. The owners are very easy to work with, and their attention to detail is impressive. Convenient to Burnsville, Bakersville, and Spruce Pine. An hour from Asheville. You are not going to be able to find a better rental.

Incredible views and living art within the house as well as outside...
The house is perfectly situated with an incredible view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, extremely quiet and beautifully decorated. All amenities included made the stay extra special, from the deep Jet Tub with bath salts and oils, to a kitchen with artistic flare and functionality infused with incredible taste and practicality. The art work throughout the house resembles walking around a museum and your eye catching something new and beautiful in every room.. every crevice. We will be returning to stay at this house in years to come. Highly recommended.

Family Thanksgiving
House was beautifully maintained and comfortable. We stayed here for a week with family (4 adults and 2 kids) and there was more than enough room for everyone. With a spare TV in the master bedroom it also allowed us to let the kids watch a couple of shows in the evening and let the adults have a conversation in the living room without the noise and distractions. Worked well as a central location while we explored the area around. Went hiking at various spots throughout the mountains, hunted gems and rocks with the kids nearby, ate out at several places including the Mountain View Restaurant which was delicious. All sorts of recommendations and information is provided for you at the house on the area and things to do and places to go. Its an incredible wealth of information of you are new to the area. Lisa was extremely responsive to anything and checked in with us several times while we were there to see if we needed anything. If you are looking to explore the area or just relax with a beautiful view of the mountains, this place has it all. Will be back again soon!
