About this apartment rental
[note that the pricing for up to four guests assumes that you are seeking only 1/2 of the apartment: either Sarah or Belle]
A lovely and romantic hideaway in the absolute center of the city. Quiet and bright, totally remodeled recently for use by our own family, Apartments Sarah and Belle are a pair of rooftop apartments overlooking a Bauhaus courtyard. It's your home away from home, with comfortable furnishings, fresh flowers and plants, welcoming fruit and wine and pastries, bathroom amenities and supplies, everything to make you feel at home, plus owners and a local manager who can provide the support of a Five Star concierge, and the infrastructure to address any emergency 24/7:
A few steps off the lift, pass through your small gated patio and enter 50 square meters of homelike comfort: full American kitchen, cable TV, wi-fi high speed internet, en suite separate water closet and bath with custom-built shower. Apartment Sarah is actually two adjoining, air conditioned, rooftop apartments on the south side of the building (Sarah on the east, Belle on the west). Overlooking a lovely and bright courtyard and away from the bustle of the city center just outside (two 5-star hotels are within 2 blocks of the front door; Budapest's oldest and most extensive music and record shop is on the ground floor of the building), Apartment Sarah/Belle has a cathedral ceiling more than 4 meters high, with nooks and crannies and skylights that render it romantic and unique.
The apartment is reached by either of the building’s two lifts (one at the Sarah end, one at Belle), and has its own locked entry gate. Each half has its own bathroom with luxury shower and a small but well-stocked American kitchen (convection oven, fridge, full sink, clothes washer and dryer; all staples are there when you arrive from coffee or tea to eggs and cheese, salt, sugar, everything you need to prepare a first snack; and we welcome you with pastry and wine). Dishware, cutlery, pots, and pans are all there when you arrive.
Each half has a small library of guidebooks and maps, and cable TV and high speed open-access wi-fi Internet, as well as a small stock of games and light fiction. Each half has a sleeping loft (up a set of stairs) with a comfortable bed sleeping two (larger-than-full 140cm in Sarah, larger-than-queen 160cm in Belle), and has a large convertible sofa that can sleep two in the livingroom (120 cm). A pair of locking doors can separate each half from the other, but when the doors are opened the two join for a large and luxurious apartment with two bedrooms, two convertible sofas, two baths and two kitchens (sleeping a total of 8 in comfort). Use of a mobile phone with Hungarian telephone number is included (airtime for the phone is the guest’s responsibility). A VOIP telephone in the apartment provides unlimited calling to the US/Canada and landlines in most of the world.
The apartment is in the very center of District V, or the Belvaros (City Center). District V is the heart around which the City of Budapest was built. The Building, a landmark marking the transition to Bauhaus from Art Nouveau, is at #5 Szervita Square, and Szervita Square is at the very center of District 5. One block away from the Deak Square Metro hub, where all three of the city’s Metro lines intersect. Take the historic Yellow line (the first subway in continental Europe) to Andrassy Street, the Opera, the Liszt Music Academy, Heroes’ Square and Gundel’s Restaurant. Take the Red line into Buda and explore the Castle, the Citadel, and the hills. Take the Blue line to Raday street’s bohemian bars and cafes.
Or walk two blocks to the Danube and take the #2 Tram, north to Parliament and the antique shops of Falk Miksa Street, or south to the Central Market Hall or the stunning new Palace of the Arts (the landscaping is not yet totally finished, but the acoustics are remarkable).
Or just walk a block to the historic pedestrian mall on Vaci Street, a boulevard lined with shops and restaurants. Several blocks to the south and you are at the Great Synagogue (second largest in the world) or go a similar distance north and you are at St. Stephen’s Basilica. Go half a dozen blocks to the northeast and you are at the foot of Andrassy Street, the grand boulevard leading to the Opera, Operetta Theatre, and Liszt Music Academy.
Free concerts abound within walking distance in the summers and, at Christmas and other celebrations, Vorosmarty Square a block away lights up with decorations and outdoor crafts and food vendors.
We are not the typical apartment rental business. We are a pair of midlife American academics who love to travel. John's father was born in Hungary and left in the mid-1930s. John grew up hearing tales of Budapest, but we first visited it in 2001, decades after John's father' had died. We fell in love with the city and its vibrant yet relaxed lifestyle and culture, and we purchased and renovated this place in 2005 for family use as well as rental. It is furnished and equipped to provide everything we would want to find in an apartment when we travel ourselves, and more. We want you to be as enthusiastic about this city as we are, and will be available to answer any questions or to assist in any way we can.

The apartment was excellent, comfortable and welcoming. It was a pleasure to be picked up at the airport and to be met by the property manager and some groceries. It is very well
Located. We would absolutely recommend this location.
5.0
First of all, the apartment is in a great location in Pest — no need for a car. Everything you need is within easy walking distance, including the Starbucks right across the street.
Second, the apartment is so homey and well-equipped. There was even food in the fridge for us when we arrived! And even though it’s in the middle of a city, the apartment is very quiet. It is also air-conditioned, which was so appreciated on the hot days we were there. And the building has a decent-sized elevator, which was useful for getting my bicycle up to the fifth floor.
Finally, our host John and his manager Zsuzsa could not have been more helpful, responsive, and accommodating. If I could give them 6 stars, I would. Highly recommend!

We had decided to change the way we travel. Instead of roaming around one country, changing hotels every few days, this time we picked one city where we would stay 7-8 days, exploring, seeing some sites, but mostly walking around, interacting with people and learning something if their history and culture. Looking through listings, we found “Belle” and “Sarah” two wonderful apartments in central Budapest. Reading through the description of both (very good photographs) we were intrigued by John and Jeanne’s history with Budapest. After contacting John to see which flat would be better, we had decided, mostly based on John’s enthusiasm for his city.
Belle is a wonderful flat, with a living area, bathroom, full kitchen, balcony overlooking a courtyard. The bedroom is a loft, but very roomy, with a desk and computer as well. Look at the photos!
But what really made it special was all of the little touches. Everything you need is there. The WC cabinet was loaded with things we might need (toothpaste, razors, shaving cream etc). The kitchen is fully equipped, like home. Nit only was there a Nespresso, but a full selection of capsules. The refrigerator was fully stocked! Milk, eggs, cheese, sausage, wonderful chocolate covered truffles and much more. On the counter was wine and an assortment of local breads.
All of this thanks to John/Jeanne and their team, Szusza and Alajos (the driver who’ll pick you up at BUD).
THANK YOU for the best trip we’ve had. You made it great!

Everything about the Belle apartment met our needs. The location couldn't be better, the communication with the owner and assistant was excellent, the provisions supplied upon our arrival were thoughtful and much appreciated. There are a lot of books in the apartment, which made us feel at home (!) and having an easy-to-use washer and dryer allowed us to travel light. I can't recommend this apartment enough -- thanks John and Zsuzsa!!!

A perfect location. A perfect communication process. Hospitality +. For two couples who wanted a combination of privacy and group connection this was great. All amenities provided. Beds comfortable (stairs to lofts). Transportation from airport provided and host to meet the family onsite. Owners were a joy to work with. A small footprint that felt twice its size in heart of city. Would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thanks JF for great hosting.

Great place to stay in Budapest with everything within walking distance. The apartment worked out for us, from the pre-arranged airport pickup, to meeting the manager upon arrival, to the food so kindly purchased for us by the owner. Apartment also has a washer/dryer to cut down on dragging around that extra suitcase full of dirty clothes. We will definitely stay here again during our next visit to the area!

This place is great! Absolutely perfect central location. Very well stocked with everything you need for a comfortable stay in central Budapest. Excellent communication and check in and out was so easy! Public Transport is just around the corner and east and cheap.

Been there twice. Hope to return again. Excellent location and communication.

The apartment is warm and welcoming and super-well equipped, as well as perfectly situated (above a fantastic, landmark book and music store). But it is the attentive and generous welcome by John and his "team" on site that we have particularly appreciated, from the airport pickup to the welcome at the apartment itself. Many thanks!

We were three adults on a short family trip to celebrate my husband's birthday. The arrangements, from airport pickup to Szuza's introduction to the apartment went perfectly. The groceries provided an excellent lunch so that we could get out and explore the city immediately.
The inside of the apartments (we rented both Sarah and Belle) is an interesting beamed conversion with the beds on galleries in the roof. My husband chose to use the comfortable sofabed downstairs and closer to the bathroom! The decor was fascinating, eclectic and personal with new items being spotted all the time. That gave the place a real home from home feel.
The apartment is brilliantly located and, together with John's excellent notes on exploring the city, enabled us to make the most of our 2 1/2 day stay. We enjoy exploring on foot and Budapest is an ideal size for doing that. The architecture is varied and interesting, making walking the streets a treasure hunt. We also used the good local transport to save time and at the end of a long day's walking.
Highly recommended!

Perfect location, extra touches, and excellent communication with the host made our first trip to Budapest one to cherish. We appreciated the driver to meet us, the stocked fridge, and valuable information about the neighborhood. Our family highly recommends this lovely and homey property!

We had a wonderful stay at this lovely well appointed apartment in the heart of Budapest. The apartment is quiet, well-furnished and equipped, and very charming. It is close to the river and an easy walk to all of the major attractions. John and his property manager Christina were wonderful hosts, with lots of communication before we arrived, including arranging for a driver to pick us up at the airport. We hope to be back for a longer stay when we can.

John, the host, was very attentive to our every need. We were meeting my son and a friend for a week stay in Budapest and the Sarah belle couldn't have been more perfect. The young adults and my husband and I had privacy in the two side by side units with adjoining doors; there were lots of travel reference guides; the apartment was very homey and stocked with food for the first day; an on-site manager greeted us and oriented us to the Sarah belle which is very centrally located; and there were lots of helpful written guides in the apartment regarding how appliances worked, best restaurants, frequently asked questions, and what to do in an emergency. John called at the beginning and end of our stay to make sure that alll was going well. We were very pleased with the overall experience.

Words cannot express how lucky we were to stay at the Sarah/Belle apartments in Budapest. Location was perfect, everything you could possibly need was provided from chargers, umbrellas to towels for the thermal baths!
We travelled with our two daughters (9 and 7) for a week and couldn’t have been more pleased with the accommodations. You cannot go wrong staying here!

Located in the very heart of Budapest, on the Pest side, the location of the apartment is a short walk from literally anything one wants to discover. The area is safe and John and Jane are the most thoughtful, dedicated and helpful hosts there is. I have travelled in dozens of countries and stayed in over 20 rentals and never did I feel I as welcomed as I did with John and Jane's apartments. Every little detail is carefully thought of and will actually enrich your visit to the city. Enjoy!

John and Jeanne have thought of practically everything. The accommodations we're more like staying in my own home than using a hotel. Location is Central to everything and there are ample resources (travel books, maps, movies, games, power adapters, cookwear, ect) available in the unit. John even has a great Budapest blog with even more information to read! I wish there was a way to differentiate between five stars and FIVE stars. They deserve the later.

This is the third time we have stayed in one of John's apartments in Budapest, and as on the previous occasions, it was superb! Belle is extraordinarily comfortable, homey, well equipped and laid out. John's passion for Budapest and for his guests to enjoy themselves is evident throughout your stay. Every possible need has been anticipated and catered for, from a selection of food and drink to settle in with to copious notes and guides to the best of Budapest. The apartment is safe, quiet, excellent value for money, and very central. Budapest itself is terrifically interesting and one of the best destinations in Europe for culture, history, food, and beauty. Go to something at the Opera House, have a dinner cruise on the Danube, visit as many cafes as possible, and just wander the streets! We will be back again. Thank you so much, John!

Our family of five recently spent four nights in the Sarah-Belle apartments. From start to finish we had a great experience. John, the owner, was always quick to respond to emails, as well as anything that we needed during our stay. The apartment manager was waiting when we arrived so we were able to get into the apartment right away. We were pleasantly surprised with a delicious variety of foods, dessert, and wine waiting for us! It was much appreciated after our travels.
The apartments were well equipped with everything we needed for our stay. It was much more like being at home than some VRBO rentals that are more like hotels. We also appreciated the air conditioning units, as it was quite hot during our visit. The beds were comfortable and it was great to have multiple bathrooms with three teenagers!
The apartments are close to everything...shopping, sight seeing, restaurants, groceries, etc. We easily got around on foot during our stay. This has been one of our favorite VRBO rentals and we will definitely rent from John in the future if we have the opportunity to travel to Budapest again!

We would encourage everyone to visit Budapest which is a lovely, relaxed, gracious city. This apartment is terrific the location is prime, very central, with good public transport close by as well as excellent restaurants and cafes Don't miss going to a concert while you are in the city The music scene is excellent and not expensive at all. The owners of this apartment are passionate about the city and there are extensive directions to the city's attractions at your fingertips in the apartment You should be aware that the bed in this apartment is in a loft reached by stairs, this could be an issue for someone very frail who may not be comfortable on stairs There is a balcony with outdoor seating which i am sure is nice in good weather We took advantage of the owners offer to arrange transport from the airport which is very helpful if you had a long flight to get here The wine, juice, milk, pastries, etc left in the apartment were much appreciated. great stay recommend highly

A lovely apartment in the perfect location. We explored all over Budapest from this apartment, on foot; everything was nearby. The apartment itself was also wonderful. Spotlessly clean, warm and inviting, comfortable, everything you need was provided. I also loved the architecture of the building itself, and the people who live in the building are kind and welcoming. Excellent communication and customer service with the owner. Truly a great place to stay.

The Sarah apartment is a very comfortable home base for exploring Budapest. It's located just a few minutes from Deak Ferenc ter, which is a major hub for all public transit within the city, making it very easy to reach any place your heart desires … City Park and Szchenyi Baths, Opera House and House of Terror, Great Market Hall, Castle Hill. Vorosmarty ter, the river front and Vaci utca (the main tourist shopping street)are also just a few minutes walk from the apartment. The Hungarian Parliament is within walking distance, or hop on Tram 2 on the river front for a quick ride it.
There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Or stop at one of the nearby grocery stores and prepare your meals in the apartment's adequately furnished kitchen.
The apartment is very nice and quiet. The living room furniture is comfortable. The shower is large. The loft above the dining room is filled with a large bed that you essentially crawl into at the top of the stairs. There's really nothing else in the loft, and the roof beams make it difficult to access what floor space there is. Although going up and down the stairs in the middle of the night when nature calls wasn't ideal, the bed was very comfortable (not too firm, not too soft).
Getting into the apartment is a little bit like entering a secure bank vault. Enter the passcode at the street level entrance into the building. Ride the elevator to the top floor. Unlock a door into the inner courtyard, pass through, relock the door. Unlock a door into the apartment's patio area, pass through, relock the door. Unlock the door into the apartment. You get use to the process pretty quickly, but it does require some coordination when you're with a group of people. The upside is that you feel very secure … not that I ever felt unsafe in this centrally located neighborhood.
The Sarah apartment has an adjoining door with the Belle apartment. Since my friend was staying in Belle, we left the adjoining doors unlocked and usually open so that we could easily pass back and forth. It's a great set up for groups who want to be together but also have the possibility of some private time.
Overall, this is a great place to stay in Budapest. The owners are very responsive and friendly. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome … e.g., treats waiting for you upon arrival and a bag to use for your spa visits. The person that cleans the apartment on a weekly basis (we stayed for 3 weeks) is also very professional, frie

I stayed at Sarah in August of 2016 and this place is great! This was my first time in Budapest and it was a warm welcome from John that I will not forget. The apartment is cozy and clean and has everything that you may need for your trip.Cute little kitchen fully stocked with amenities. The bed was comfortable and in a little cozy loft which I enjoyed. The living room was spacious and the whole place was clean and tidy. There is no noise so no worries there. The apartment is close to everything.Shops, the river, bistros and plenty of restaurants to choose from. There is a metro station around the corner and a bus stop right in front.I am telling you that if you or some one that you know are staying in Budapest you need to contact John because you will not regret your stay!!!!
