About this house rental
Our house is nestled on the eastern slope of Afton Mountain just below Rockfish Gap in the northern tip of Historic Nelson County on the “Sunrise Side of the Blue Ridge” It’s just 3-minutes away from where the Blue Ridge Parkway meets the Skyline Drive and 4-minutes to the southern gatehouse of the Shenandoah National Park. Hiking, skiing, golf, biking, and sightseeing; the area calls to the outdoor enthusiast.
If history is your thing you're fortunate that we have that too! But if you are the type that prefers a quiet spot with a good book that's possible too; the house has two porches and outside of the occasional train rumbling past it's pretty quiet. There are music and performance venues in the nearby communities of Crozet, Waynesboro, Charlottesville, and Staunton. In recent years Nelson County has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in the age-old crafts of brewing, distilling, and viticulture; Nelson County's popular Brew Ridge Trail begins just three miles down the road where you can tour numerous breweries, cideries, vineyards, and a distillery or two.
One section of our property was once the site of the freight station for the original Blue Ridge Railway which sits alongside the recently renovated Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Trail. This Rails-To-Trails addition will include Crozet’s 4300-foot-long tunnel dug 500 feet below Afton Mountain during the 1850s. It was one of the longest tunnels ever built in its day and the first tunnel ever dug simultaneously from both sides. The tunnel/trail opened to visitors in the fall of 2020 to rave reviews.
The house (our first home) is a simple wood-framed 2-story cottage with about 1200 sq feet of living space. We don’t know how old it is but 25 years ago we met a woman who told us she was born in the house in 1911; we don't think it's much older than that. Much of the house has been modernized and renovated. The upstairs bedrooms are small by modern standards and have sloped ceilings and the stairway was built for a time when people were shorter so you folks over 6’2 should watch your noggins. There are two bedrooms upstairs; one with a queen and the second bedroom has two twin beds. There is a modern bathroom with a shower and a small office nook.
On the first floor, you will find a well-equipped kitchen, dining, and living area in an open and well-lit floor plan. The original living room was converted to a first-floor bedroom with a king bed in 2022.
Just two steps from the new primary bedroom and off the family room you will find a small full bath with a tub/shower.
The cozy open front porch faces east onto a small shaded front lawn. There are views to the east and south that open up in the winter. It is the best place to escape the heat of the day or to enjoy early morning coffee.
The fully enclosed back porch was fully insulated in 2022 to make it more comfortable. It is not heated or air-conditioned as of yet since we want to see how it responds to the insulation.
The trailhead for the Blue Ridge Tunnel, a major local attraction, adjoins our property at one corner. The eastern access trail is a nearly level hard-pack surface 1/2 mile to the tunnel entrance. The tunnel, which opened for train traffic in 1858, is 4300 feet long and was dug simultaneously from east and west.
We’re located just 25 miles west of Charlottesville, UVA, and Monticello, 4 minutes from I-64 exit 99 or 10 minutes from I-64 exit 107. Waynesboro is 10 minutes to the west. It’s just a 15-minute walk to the Appalachian Trail. Wintergreen's Valley section, Stoney Creek is a 15-minute drive down the Rockfish Valley. The skiing area on the mountain is another 15 minutes beyond that or, if weather permits during non-freezing temperatures, you can shave some time by traveling the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway route to the mountain section. Enjoy everything the Blue Ridge Mountains have to offer.
The more information you provide in the booking inquiry the better we will be able to serve you.

The cottage is beautifully decorated. Very clean and had everything we needed for a weekend stay. Convenient location for wineries and breweries. Would absolutely stay at the cottage again.

Property was super clean and ideally located with easy access to national parks, wineries, breweries and Charlottesville.
Owner communicated proactively and was fully available throughout our stay. Loved the front porch and the peaceful country vibes!

Beautifully renovated cottage in great location-- right near the southern entrance of Skyline drive, near Charlottesville and close to many great wineries. Would highly recommend.

2 grandparents and 2 grandsons found the Afton Cottage to be comfortable and convenient. We enjoyed breakfast with bluebirds and bunnies, bikes and hikes on the tunnel trail, drives and hikes in the SNP, and a family reunion in nearby Charlottesville. The house was very comfortable and well appointed.

The cottage is tucked away in the mountain but is right by Rt 6 near Rt 250. We came with our adult children for some relaxation. The cottage was very well equipped and we loved the layout. I spent most mornings on the screened porch enjoying my coffee and the bird song. We had planned to do some hiking, since its near the Blue Ridge Tunnel and the Shenandoah Park but temperatures were in the 90s. We did hike down to the tunnel once. We've already booked for April 2025 so we can hopefully hike in cooler weather.
Doesn't hurt that Veritas winery is 10 minutes down the road. There are other wineries and breweries in the area and we alternated visiting them in the afternoon and playing games in the evening.

This cottage is very well appointed and in a fabulous location for the greater Charlottesville area. You’ll be staying within walking distance of the trailhead to the Blue Ridge Tunnel trailhead and a convenient hop to local roads to everything. My family and I had a wonderful time and would absolutely consider coming back!

This is a beautiful property and it’s very clear lots of thought, detail, and effort have gone into this rental home. Check-in was a breeze and the property managers were kind, helpful, and available if necessary. I truly enjoyed my stay as it was very relaxing. I highly recommend staying here and hope to stay here again in the future. Thank you for everything!

We loved Afton Station Cottage! We were looking for a nice place to stay for our trip to the Blue Ridge for hiking and sightseeing, and located in the Charlottesville-Shenandoah Valley wine country. We couldn’t have found a more homey and comfortable place.
Communication with our hosts easy and convenient throughout our stay. Pre-check in information was perfect. Our hosts also gave us some great information about the area, including suggestions for places to see and visit.
We enjoyed one of the best VRBO stays we’ve had.
We’ll be back!

Yards away from historic train tunnel offering daily 3 mile walks. Beautiful mountain views and a nicely kept property. So relaxing and not so far from Charlottesville

Great property and responsive communication from the property owners. The cottage was spotless and was a great location for hiking, wineries, breweries, and other local attractions. We would definitely come back for another stay!

Exactly as advertised. Great property in a beautiful location. We want to visit again with extended family.

Enjoyed our stay there very much. Very comfortable. Location was great for us. Would definitely stay there again.

We were attending a wedding at nearby Hazy Mountain Winery. This location was so close to many wineries and breweries, as well as “back yard” access to the Blue Ridge Tunnel for a great morning hike. We enjoyed the fire pit every night and college football games on Saturday afternoon. The only downside was the upstairs bedrooms were warm even with the air conditioner running. Fans would have been nice. It was unusually hot while we were there though. We want to return and explore the area more. Stunning fall destination.

We loved our stay here at this cozy cottage in Afton. It's in a quiet neighborhood with occasional train passing by. Great place to relax and enjoy your beautiful surroundings. Waynesboro is close by with all your shopping needs. Attractions are a short day trip away. The cottage has everything you'll need to make your stay comfortable. We loved the inside atmosphere and decor. The beds were comfortable and clean. The bathrooms and kitchen were clean, functional, and beautiful. Everything is labeled and easy to find/use. One of the best places we have stayed at from VRBO.

Beautiful home. Beautiful location. Fabulous hikes in both Shenandoah and Blue Ridge Mountains followed by a visit to the many breweries. Hosts couldn’t have been more helpful. Hope to return in the next year and this time take in the Vinyards.

We so enjoyed our stay at this adorable cottage! It has the perfect balance of modern conveniences without losing the charm of its age and history. A beautiful modern, well stocked kitchen with top of the line appliances, updated bathrooms, and comfortable beds provide the basics for daily living. But, the personality of a vintage cottage still remains. It felt so homey and we loved relaxing in the enclosed porch soaking in the beauty of the mountains. We were there for the Celebration of Life for a family member, and the coziness of the cottage provided each of us the comfort and opportunity to quietly reflect. Tom and Jackie were the perfect hosts. They provided all the information we needed for our stay and were always timely in answering our questions. If we could give 10 stars we would! Thank you, Tom and Jackie.

The Property was better than advertised! My Wife and I stayed for a long weekend with my Dad and we all commented how nice the house was. The House was spotless and had everything we needed to cook a couple of dinners. We went to both Montpelier and Monticello and through in a few Wineries, Breweries and Distilleries to round it out....what a good time! The Owner Tom is a great guy and was very responsive to any question we had. Looking forward to another stay so we can take a walk through the Blue Ridge Tunnel, the parking for tunnel is directly adjacent to the back of the property! I highly recommend staying here...don't miss it!

Tom and Jackie’s home was perfect for our short family vacation. Kitchen was nicely equipped, and we even enjoyed the fire pit one evening. We hiked in SNP, checked out UVA, Monticello, and the Charlottesville farmers market, and made the hike through the RR tunnel. Loved that we were so remote, but still close to churches, restaurants and other activities.

We loved our stay at Afton Station Cottage. It is very comfortable & charming. There's a well-stocked kitchen, a large table for board games, & comfortable beds. The location was great, very close to the Blue Ridge Parkway & Shenandoah National Park. The Blue Ridge Tunnel Trail is right next door. We would definitely want to stay here again the next time we are in the area.

A long weekend stay - we enjoyed the Afton Station Cottage!! Modern kitchen and bathrooms, comfortable beds, good seating in family room, back porch and front porch.
One member of the party commented that she could stay here for a week - cook good food, hike, and read. Plan to hike the Blue Ridge Tunnel during your stay.
Chooo chooo - you may experience an unexpected awakening by the train!!!

We spent 4 nights here. It was 5 adults (50+ years old). Plenty of space for everyone. Everything that we needed to have a great time and make some small meals. We enjoyed the fire pit and made s’mores. We took a walk one evening and went thru the tunnel trail. Would definitely come back.

This place is beautiful! House was very comfortable and clean. So many nice touches! Great communication - from driving directions, to checking in instructions, to all the labels located throughout the house.

This property is a hidden gem. The house is open and airy for having family all together. We stayed here for a long weekend for our child's graduation from JMU. Although about 45 minutes away, it was perfect as we felt removed from all the traffic and hub bub of Harrisonburg. It was nice to come "home" to relax. Truly a perfect weekend.
We cannot wait to come back for another extended weekend and enjoy all the local wineries and other places Afton and are has to offer.

Super comfy cottage that’s nicely outfitted and equipped. Very convenient for accessing the Wine & Brew Trail, as well as a quick trip over to Charlottesville.

This cottage is so cute and is as advertised and has everything you would need. The area is beautiful. Tom was a gracious host and was particularly helpful to us when a bad storm had an impact on our stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. Every other year, we choose a different location to meet our son & his family for Thanksgiving. We have done Hilton Head, Asheville and Williamsburg and, hands down, Afton Station Cottage was the most well appointed place we've ever stayed at. The modern kitchen had everything we needed to cook a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner. The location was perfect with plenty of things to do. The check in process was seamless, the welcome book thorough and this might seem silly but every switch was labeled which made acclimating to an unfamiliar home very easy! The home is so lovely with modern amenities but all the charm of an older cottage. Tom & Jackie have thought of everything and we highly recommend this location. You will not be disappointed!

This very comfortable and clean cottage is only one mile from the entrance to both the Shenandoah National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway where many wonderful hikes await you. After a day of hiking there were numerous breweries and brew pubs with good food close by to go to.

The perfect place to get away to enjoy breweries, wineries, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Nestled among the mountain and trees yet central to everything. All the modern conveniences with the charm of years gone by. Tom and Jackie are the quintessential hosts. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
