About this house rental
The Briars is a 19th century shingle style “cottage” located in the heart of York Harbor, Maine and a short five minute walk to the beach. Listen to the fishing boats as they depart the Harbor each morning, smell the salty air and feel the gentle ocean breeze. The home has been entertaining guests for over a century, most recently as a bed-and-breakfast for the past 30 years. You’ll have plenty of room for gathering with family and friends including lots of space for lounging on one of the many porches/decks. Some of the rooms offer views of the harbor where time will slowly pass as you watch the boats come and go. 8 bedrooms with 7 bathrooms means plenty of room for the whole family without long wait times to take a shower! The charming home was renovated in 2016 and 2019 to include 5 new bathrooms (the other two of seven are already modern) and new furnishings to ensure you have a very comfortable stay. We offer one of the best per room/per night fees or per person/per night of any large rental in York Harbor.
Our home is in an ideal spot to enjoy the sought after environs of York Harbor. Guests can easily walk to the Harbor Beach known for its family friendly atmosphere. The Cliff Walk starts at the Harbor Beach and offers spectacular views of the rocky Maine coast and stunning Victorian mansions. The Hartley Mason estate is a beautiful public park overlooking the Harbor Beach with flower gardens and plenty of shade from the summer sun. Moulton Park is two doors down the street from us with a fantastic space for any outdoor activity with lots of sun and shade. The Fisherman’s Walk is steps away where you stroll along the river and enjoy views of the boats coming in and out of the harbor – including lobsterman with their fresh catch of the day. Fisherman’s walk brings you to the Wiggly Bridge-Steadman Woods where you can take a loop through the forest or continue walking to the historic York Village. York Village (less than five minutes away by car in case you lost track of how long you’ve been walking) was settled in 1624 (3 years after Plymouth Plantation!) and offers a rich array of historical buildings (e.g Old Gaol – one of the oldest jails in America; a one room school house; Jefferds Tavern; The Old Burying Ground featuring 18th-19th century carved tombstones; and the John Hancock Warehouse etc.).
The Harbor is rich in culture and fine dining. The York Art Association is located a few houses down the street from us. George Marshall store gallery is located through the Steadman Woods and has a series of art exhibits during the year (the curator lives down the street from our house). There are other small galleries and shops in the Village. York Harbor Inn, Stage Neck Inn, and Chapman Cottage each offer award winning dining and are all a five minute walk from our home. The Dockside Restaurant is located across the harbor (five minute drive away) and is a great spot to view the marina and have a great meal. The marina offers boat and kayak rentals for those wishing to experience some “ocean” culture.
The York area and surrounding towns offer a never ending list of things to do. Visit lighthouses. Go whale watching. Explore forts and historical sights. Enjoy the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. Hike Mt. Agamenticus for breathtaking views of the ocean to the east and forest/mountains to the west (you can also drive to the top if you are feeling lazy and visit the nature exhibit in the old ski lodge). Shop at the Kittery Outlets (save this for those rainy days). Visit the York Beach boardwalk with an amusement park, bowling, arcade, shops, live entertainment, salt water taffy and more. Hiking-Biking-Boating-Sunbathing…or just reading a book in the many nooks of our beautiful home. You will love the relaxed pace of Maine. There is a reason our state motto is "Maine, the way life should be".
Looking to accommodate an even bigger group? We also have a 10 bedroom/8 bathroom property that is close by. We have a six bedroom home that we offer only very selectively that is in between the other two properties.

Eight long time friends stayed at the Briars for 4 days and the accommodations could not have been more perfect. Lance was prompt in returning messages and was very helpful. The house was exceptionally clean and directions were clear and easy to understand.i highly recommend the Briars!

This was a great location and getaway for our large group to get together and enjoy Maine! House was super clean, yard was great for a fire, and check in was easy!

We were a group of 20 - 3 sisters and 2 brothers and our families ( kids ranged from 31 to 10 yrs old). There was plenty of room for all of us! Our favorite place to hang out was the large front porch. Many days started and ended on the porch. It was the place to be. Our host, Lance was fantastic providing a list of must see and do while in York. We had a few minor electrical issues that Lance took care of right away. Our only wish would be for a larger kitchen as we like to cook. The kitchen was well-equipped just small for our liking but we made do. We all agreed we would stay at the Briars again.

The Briars is the place to stay! The house was perfect in every detail, very inviting and extremely clean. Lance was a great host and very helpful. We vacationed with 6 adults and 7 teens. Everyone raved about how much fun they had. York Harbor is the place to be and The Briars is the place to stay!

Our stay was perfect. The property is gorgeous. Everything is well equipped. The kitchen is fully stacked. It is truly awesome. Our host Lance was so kind - brought us wine and pie and was just so welcoming and wonderful. It could not have been a more perfect stay in every way.

From beginning to end, Lance and this property were tremendous. Lance is incredibly responsive, informative, available, and very friendly and helpful. He made the stay very enjoyable. I had several conversations with Lance over the phone and in person and enjoyed everyone of the them. He’s the consummate host. The Property? There’s one word that my guests and I kept using to describe it; it felt like home. It was very clean, spacious and inviting. We were 14 and had plenty of room to dine, sleep, and just hang out. We had a fantastic stay at lovely home with a gracious and fun host. I expect you will too.

My family and I had a great time in York! The house was awesome and fit all of us (16 people, including 3 babies and 2 older kids!) comfortably! We loved sitting out on the porch and at the fire pit; there was plenty of room for all of us to socialize. We appreciated the fact that there were beach chairs, linens, and other amenities provided so we didn't have to bring all of our own. We also got lucky with the weather, which was a huge plus. The host, Lance, was great and super helpful in answering all of our questions leading up to the trip. I highly recommend staying here and we will be back!

Our entire family has not gotten together since all the babies have been born. This house was perfect! The rooms on 3 levels provided privacy while the beautiful common areas were great for socializing. I was so nervous about the event, but Lance put my mind to rest with his quick complete responses and his great suggestions. The lovely beach in walking distance was the icing on the cake.

The home is beautiful sitting right in the heart of York Beach. We loved walking the area each day and checking out the beautiful views and the ocean.
Lance came to greet us and made sure we were properly settled in. He was a phone call away but we never needed him as the property was perfect for us. Lots of inside living space and plenty outdoors with a great porch and gas fire pit. A great time was had by all!

Beautiful house that helped my family have a good place to socialize and be together. Thank you!

The house accommodated 12 of us very comfortably. The owner came by to say hello and make sure everything was comfortable and working well. Lance was very gracious and sent us a great list of things to do in York and surrounding area. The house is exceptionally well located. Easy to get to everything. We would go back again.

A group of us gathered and it was a bucket list trip for ALL of us. Nightly fires (after fire dept permission), daily walks, group puzzles and beautiful drives to catch the colors. This home was perfectly situated to afford all these opportunities AND family/friend bonds were fermented here.

This was the third year renting the Briar’s house with our large group of friends! The proximity to the beach is fantastic & we all love the beautiful & peaceful walk there. Lance is such an attentive and responsive host who always gives the best suggestions! Thanks for another incredible year of life long memories!

Our entire family was thrilled with this stay. The property was fabulous, the location so beautiful and the host really tied everything together with a bow.
We heartily recommend The Briars and hope to return soon!
Lance- Thanks for making it so special.

Our large family have been vacationing together for the past 20 years. The Briars is impecciably clean with more than adequate linens and utensils. Lance is the one and only owner in all these years who welcomed us and provided tons of info on the surrounding area. What a delight ! esp. the wine and rhubarb pie he gave us. We were more than happy with 'The Briars" and looking forward to another visit. Trish

What a perfect location for a family reunion. We visited the property as a group of 18(!) and all had a terrific time. We felt like we had plenty of space to spread out, and the location can’t be beat. Easy access to beautiful ocean walks, minutes to a private beach (walkable), and a short drive to many restaurants/shops/activities. Perfect for a relaxing summer getaway. We were lucky enough to bump into the owner (Lance) as well. He made check in a breeze, shared numerous recommendations about the area, and even dropped off a fresh pie for our family to enjoy. Thank you Lance!

We rented this house with a group of our friends for the week of our wedding. The location and size of the house was perfect. We had a bunch of people stay there and never felt like we were running into each other. The house was very clean, spacious and plenty of parking. We would rent this property again in a heartbeat!

Beautiful setting and nice location. The house itself was not ideally suited for a large group. The kitchen was quite small and proved challenging for cooking meals for our crowd. The bedrooms vary tremendously in size and comfort; our room, the smallest, had a private bath, but no dresser, closet or heat (our weather week was chilly). The common spaces such as the living room, dining room, and front porch were all spacious and comfortable. The parking was generous and the fire pit was a nice feature.

The house is large. Rooms are well appointed and very comfortable beds. Bathrooms modern, super clean.
Glitches such a a broken coffee pot were immediately addressed by Lance.
A buffet style dinner on Friday night with approximately 25 people went perfectly. Food was served at the dining room table and seatings were on the front porch, sun porch, living room, and kitchen. No one felt crowded. Very relaxed atmosphere.
Following Lance's directives regarding trash management resulted in no issues with clean up.
It rained the whole time so were unable to enjoy the fire pit.
It's a great house overall and well managed by the owner.

We were in southern Maine for a family reunion. The Briars was a great place for us to stay. It is a beautiful older home with tons of space and that older home charm. Lance was a good host. Very close to the beach.

This was our 2nd year staying at the Briar’s for a family getaway . It was my 3 sisters, husbands, adult children , and 2 grandchildren . We didn’t think we could outdo last year’s vacation but this one was just as fabulous !!!The memories that we have made are absolutely priceless . We all dress up in hats and special attire for the Kentucky Derby .Thanks again to Lance who was wonderful ,

Our family and friends traveled from Arizona and California for Thanksgiving in New England, and Lance’s home was the perfect spot to host all 19 of us. The house is beautiful and had plenty of space to accommodate our group, to include A LOT of bathrooms which is hard to find in older homes. The counterspace in the kitchen is a bit small, but I knew that from the pictures and brought a folding table to use for additional food storage and serving. The house is in a prime location in York, just steps to the Wiggly Bridge, Fisherman’s’ Walk and Cliff Walk and close to all the necessities like a grocery store and gas station. We very much enjoyed exploring the area (even though its was quite cold out!) as well as just relaxing around the fire pit in the yard. We had a minor issue with one of the heaters and Lance was amazing and got it resolved very quickly, even during a holiday week. We also locked ourselves out of the house at one point and Lance jumped into action to help us even though it was completely our fault. That turned out to be a hilarious story for our family for the remainder of the trip and Lance was so nice about the whole situation. If you are looking for a large home in New England I highly recommend staying here, you won’t be disappointed by the home or the area!

We have spent an awesome long weekend there with our friends and small kids. The house was exactly what we expected. Lance was supper helpful and friendly. There is even a play room full of toys for small kids. It was a perfect trip for our friends and kids to spend time making many happy memories. We will look forward to return for another amazing trip!

This house is a game changer for a large family. The house is massive, plenty of good sleeping arrangements, and with 15 people, 6 kids under 11, the house is amazingly quiet.

What a great big house. It was perfect for the entire family to have plenty of space to spread out in the common areas. Each couple had their own private bedroom and some even their own bathroom. It was perfect for the 16 adults and 3 children staying here. Great location. Walking distance to York Harbor Inn, and conveniently located a short drive from all York has to offer.

This property was exactly as described and exactly what we needed for six couples to gather for our yearly trip together. The house was very spacious with many areas to sit and relax. The area within walking distance from the house was just spectacular. Lance answered any questions we had, typically within the hour or less. We will definitely recommend the property to others who are looking for a relaxing, quiet environment with many attractions that are within walking or driving distance.

14 ladies share this amazing house. Plenty of room for everyone. The location was perfect for walks, hijing, the beach and the Art in the Park event.
Lance was a great host. The house provided everything we needed. He made sure we had knew where everything was.
The house works perfectly for large groups. We did bring a small table due to not having a lot of counter space but would definitely rent again and highly recommend.

Has a big group but this place suited us perfectly. Most bedrooms have their own bathrooms, ingeniously built in. Lots of dining space. Also loved the toy room, the classic porch—even wagons and towels for the beach. Which was very close by. We absolutely loved our stay!

We were recently guests at the Briars over Labor Day Weekend for our daughter's wedding. It was the perfect location for an informal rehearsal dinner, and the spacious accommodations were perfect for our family to spend time making many happy memories. We particularly enjoyed gathering on the huge front porch to visit and watch the comings and goings of York Harbor. The location is ideal - so close to Harbor Beach and the Fisherman's Walk, not to mention the York Golf & Tennis Club where the wedding was held. We can't say enough about Lance's responsiveness and flexibility throughout the planning process - he and the caretaker Bob were a pleasure to work with. Our only complaint is that the weekend went by too quickly!

This is a beautiful home with lots of space for the whole family and equipped with everything you need. The location is ideal. The property owner Lance was wonderful to work with and even popped over for a visit. It was great to meet him and learn about the history of the house, the area and his fond memories of growing up there. The local information he shared on beaches, restaurants, and things to do in the area was spot on. We definitely look forward to returning to "The Briars". It was well worth the journey from California!

This property is in a great location, clean & fits a large group with no problem! Lance is a great host & super attentive & helpful. The only reason for the 4 rating is that the kitchen is small & doesn’t offer much food storage & prep space for large groups. But this only applies if you do a lot of meal preparation for a large group. We have figured out how to make it work, but you need to be flexible! This was our groups second year and the kids all love it so much with the toy room and the bunk room!

A wonderful 19th century property that easily accommodated thirteen people from 5 to 70 years of age. The house is well situated near the beaches and attractions. It has a great front porch to enjoy morning coffee and evening conversations.
Lance was very responsive to our inquiries, and to a few requests we had upon arrival. Overall, a great place to stay.

Wonderful stay in Maine!
The best house we’ve rented in York! The location of the house was incredible-short walks to York Harbor Beach and Bagel Basket. Plenty of room and bathrooms for all of us. The beds were very comfortable! Our family of 15 had a wonderful time catching up with our Maine family on the huge front porch. And Lance and Bob were very helpful and kind! We’re very much looking forward to renting this house in the future!

AWESOME
The house was just beautiful! The location was walking distance to about everything in town. We stayed here for my daughter's wedding which was located at the Stage Neck Inn . We prepared her flowers on the front porch which was spacious, shaded and had a breeze. Family from Michigan and Oklahoma gathered here. I was great, lots of fun, food and many many memories.

York mini-vacation for a Family Wedding
The Briars was a perfect location for family and friends to gather for the York wedding of my niece. The house was very large to accommodate our group....we used all of the bedrooms and bathrooms. The front porch was great for having morning coffee. The dining room was huge and allowed for extra food/supply storage on the floor and 10+ of us to sit and eat. The kitchen has a Keurig maker and a Mr. Coffee, with filters on site. The inside toys and available beach toys kept the little ones entertained. The location was perfect to walk to the beach, the Fisherman's walk & the wiggly bridge, and the Cliff walk. We took field trips to Short Sands and ate at the Golden Rod and watched them make salt water taffy. We even had time to go to York Wild Animal Park. It was a wonderful stay in York.

Perfect Wedding/Family Weekend
My family rented the Briars Cottage for my June wedding weekend in York Harbor. To say the house was absolutely amazing is an understatement. Everyone in my family was blown away by the beauty of the house and the incredible hospitality from the owner, Lance. Not only did he stop in to ensure we had everything we needed for our stay, but Lance also stopped by with a Maine Blueberry Pie to help us celebrate the wedding weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet him after conversing over the months as we planned our stay. This house made the perfect gathering place for us all to enjoy a relaxing weekend, and we are already talking about hopefully renting the house again in the future because of how much we loved our stay here. A huge thank you to Lance for allowing us to use this incredible home and for the unmatched hospitality!

Great location!
Location was great! Kids aged 7-5 were able to walk to the harbor beach no problem. House is fully stocked with beach chairs, beach wagons, sand toys, and kid playroom toys. Lance was readily available when needed. Firepit was lovely and so was the big front porch. The only wish-fors would be a bigger kitchen with more counter space for food prep and ceiling fans in every room for that in-between weather where it's not hot enough for an air conditioner but warm enough that you want air circulation. Some rooms had stand-up fans but not all.
