This cottage is perfect for a couple looking to save money but still have a million dollar view. In Kealakekua Bay, just 3 minutes from some of the best snorkeling and wildlife viewing in the world, atop 49 tropical steps sits this private bungalow. There is a full sized outdoor kitchen, and modernized indoor/outdoor bathroom. This rental is suggested only for people confident in climbing 49 steps (see photos) multiple times daily as the stairs climb high to get the beautiful views and privacy.
The house is located on a private road. There is a kitty cat that will come and visit and ask for snacks, she is very sweet. There is a 10p.m. no noise ordinance for the neighborhood. Noise travels very easily in the bay, you might not see people but you can still hear them. You can always go inside if you want to stay up later.

This rental is fabulous. There is only one (bed)room, with windows on all four sides. In front the ocean view is stunning. On the back there is the outside kitchen and a beautiful back yard. From the kitchen, one sees the ocean through the room. Sanitary is detached. The place is very quiet, as we expected, and the privacy is very good. The property is very well kept and is well equipped. We had many very good rentals (and a few not so good). This one is by far the best one.

We couldn’t have asked for a better location for our honeymoon. Gorgeous views of the water and beautiful sunsets. The host is nice and helpful as well. Highly recommend this property.

We enjoyed the beauty of Hawaii. We walked down to the water. Not sure about "minutes from Dophin swimming" but the property is wonderful regardless.

This is a vacation that I will never forget. It could not have gone more perfectly.

This stay was absolutely incredible! The place was so clean and had everything we could’ve needed and more. The views and ambiance was incredible and the surrounding food was amazing. I would stay here over and over again

We stayed for three nights, but I wish we could have stayed for an entire week. The property was probably the best VRBO I’ve ever used. The open air layout was wonderful. And the views were spectacular. We would love to go back. My girlfriend really enjoyed the cat!

We had an amazing time at Gus’ property. It is absolute paradise. we enjoyed the lenai for watching whales and sunset each day. Loved the outdoor kitchen and partial open air shower. 11/10 recommend.

Staying at the cottage was one of the highlights of our family trip to the big island in winter 2023. This location is in the middle of a residential area, but the cottage itself is nestled in the hill overlooking the bay. During our stay, it was incredibly quiet and the sounds of birds calling to one another was really the only communication we heard. The walk to the local beach Was short but steep. Agree with all other comments that the view was well worth it. During our stay, we experienced all of the amenities described, including whale siding, dolphin, siding, hiking the little kitty and other sea creatures at the beach. Highly recommend.

Such a wonderful little bungalow. Fantastic views and even more amazing views from the shower. Love the outdoor kitchen and overall such a relaxing spot!

It's such a beautiful place to stay, clean and well maintained. They went the extra mile with soft towels and quality linens, everything you need is there. The view is insane (and so are the sunsets), the images of the whole property do not do it justice, it's even more beautiful in person.
Gus was super responsive when I had a really dumb question, so nice :)
The kitty coming by is a fun treat and so are the curious geckos. The drive in and out of the area is so lush and beautiful, and the beaches nearby are great. There's a nice row of unique shops in the area too, not that the Kona shopping districts are far.
Do note that like others have said, it's indoor/outdoor living, so unless you are a super heavy sleeper, you will be up with the birds in the morning :) But, in Hawaii, that's a natural fit.

An open concept home that has the perfect tropical views of the bay. If you want to experience tropical living then this is the place. Everything needed for your stay is available. Very clean. Quiet. All the better to hear all of the birds and wind in the foliage. Highly recommend a stay here.

Loved every bit of staying here! Wasn't quite as privacy friendly as we thought but it was well worth it. We'd love to come back sometime. The cat was sooo cute so we bought her some treats while we were there. The owners were great. We had a lovely time.

As described, this residence was largely open air with a commanding view; think comfortable glamping in the tree tops! The bedroom and bathroom were enclosed and quite comfortable. The kitchen was very well equipped with a full sized fridge and stove. The little, friendly geckos were everywhere and quite adorable. The area around Captain Cook was nicely situated for a large variety of activities including hiking, kayaking, snorkeling and biking. Groceries, coffee and excellent restaurants (especially Keei Cafe!) were also within close driving distance. If you can manage stairs, this cottage is highly recommended.

This is a beautiful, comfortable indoor/outdoor rental. The bedroom is modern and comfortable, and watching the sunrise and sunset from bed was such an indulgence. We were able to hear the waves crashing all day and night, otherwise the only noises are birds chirping.
The bathroom is big and modern, and the washer/dryer a huge benefit. There is a fully stocked kitchen and grill, and even treats for the local kitty.
The views can't be beat, and the location is convenient to Kona and some killer snorkeling spots. We would love to stay again!

Directions to property were very detailed with landmarks and that was much appreciated. Try to get there before dark as there are twisty curvy roads to navigate. There are 49 steps to get to the bungalow. Very clean with lots of seating areas. Best view is at high counter in front of the water. This is open air, so be mindful that you may see a gecko (harmless). Bedroom area is closed off and is neat. Nice tropical breezes. We spent all day there one of the days and it was one of our best relaxation days. We did the manta ray snorkel near Outrigger Resort and the drive back was not that far (albeit in the dark). (it will be further from say the Waikaloa resort area). We used this as a home base to explore Capt Cook area as well as driving over to Hilo to hit the Black Sand Beach, Pu'ulau Bakery. There are some good thrift shops, plus the Coffee Shack for breakfast was pretty good and had amazing views. We enjoyed the friendly black cat that came to say hello every day. Would we stay here again? Yes, I believe so. Quiet, peaceful and no light pollution.

Amazing location, unbelievable view for morning coffee (and for sunsets too), a super comfortable bed for falling into at night, a beautiful shower for washing off the ocean, all around a wonderful spot. Away from the noise and the bustle. What a magical getaway place. We snorkeled every morning, kayaked in the bay below, and overall had a ball.

Breathtaking view, didn’t want to leave. Gus was very helpful and kind, overall good dude. Pictures of property do no justice, it’s beautiful. And for the price? Hard to beat. Look forward to booking this property again!

Place was great. Loved the location. Sunrise and sunsets were epic. Also plenty of great snorkeling spots that were just a short drive away. Place had a full kitchen and refrigerator which was very useful.
Basically glamping in heaven.

The listing for this VRBO does not do this place justice. A true, you have to be there to believe it. This place gives you a true Hawaii, tropical experience. The views and layout of the place are amazing. The beautiful outdoor experience with the sitting areas, the outdoor kitchen and the bathroom giving you a private but outdoor feeling. The cat or the home ambassador is the greatest touch to the experience as well. The cats name is ‘ele’ ele in Hawaiian. Meaning black in English. Super friendly. You can take a 2 minute drive down to the cove of Captain Cook and rent a kayak for 8 hours from a local and snorkel the reef. And the place has geckos in each room. They are friends. Do not be afraid or alarmed. They eat the bugs. This was an amazing experience and Honeymoon.

We had an amazing experience during our 1 week stay. The house was comfortable, spacious, clean, and QUIET! Loved the tranquil atmosphere and watching the dolphins in the bay each mornings was just huge bonus. Minutes to some of the best snorkeling in the state and convenient driving to Kona and Volcano. We highly recommend this location and can't wait to come back!

We celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary in this delightful cottage. We loved the airy, open layout and the view is even better than in the photos. Close to great snorkeling spots and hiking trails, we enjoyed every minute and will definitely rebook this property.

This VRBO is two small buildings tucked into a hillside overlooking the bay. There is a large covered deck, and the front deck has chairs and a breakfast bar that overlooks the mountainside and the bay. This is a million dollar view and we ate our meals on the deck and gazed at the bay. On our last morning, we were privileged to see a rainbow (I will attach the pic if I can). The property is very clean and has a memory foam bed. A couple things you should know, though. The bathroom is in a separate small building from the bedroom, so if you get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, you will need to walk a few steps across the deck to get to the bathroom. Also, the bathroom has open air windows with no screens (it's completely private) so a few mosquitoes will get in at night. Overall, I loved our stay there.

My husband and I were seeking a quiet place to take in the beauty and roaches of the Big Island. We found all that and more in this exquisitely situated bungalow nestled into the side of a hill overlooking the bay. The view is a wow. The quiet simplicity was just what we were hoping for. We wish we could stay a month. Next time for sure!

From the 1st 30 seconds of meeting Gus till the last day, he truly was a asset to this trip!
I very much appreciate how he reached Out to me on several occasions probably the coolest guy I've ever met, on this type of vacation. One night he even invited me over to his personal house to stargaze. Even though this property is a solid 5 star rental, it was Gus who put it over the top to make it a 10 plus. Mahalo Gus!

Combination of resort and Hawaiian camping. This is a well appointed, comfortable place to relax. Lots of outdoor space with comfortable furnishings

We’ve knicknamed this place Our Treehouse. We loved it and already booked for next year!
Spectacular view of the ocean. It was nestled into the side of the hill and very quiet. There were several spaces on the lanai for us to spread out, choose different settings and enjoy being outdoors with the sounds of nature.
We found it peaceful and restorative…a great place to re-energize.
Kitchen had everything we needed. Bed was comfortable and bathroom/laundry had supplies to at least get you started.
Thank you for everything Gus! Looking for to next year!

If you like outdoor living, this place is for you. Very close to great snorkeling. The kitchen is well equipped and has sharp knives. Gus was very responsive to any questions we had. I would definitely stay here again. The surrounding garden was lovely and the lanai was surrounded with lush vegetation. There were a few insects as it is outdoor living, but we didn't mind a bit. Excellent!

Descriptions were very accurate. The place was awesome. Need to be comfortable with using bathroom in open air but with a view - a great idea architecturally! View, sounds, location - all were great.

A perfect location! You can do whale watching from your balcony and even from the shower...
The kitchen is perfectly staffed with everything you need and more. Even a hamilton beach for smothies.

Location was ideal: At elevation so that it is nice and cool, and within walking distance to Manini Beach Park. Also, loved the view of Keleakekua Bay from the lenai. Every amenity needed was there, including the most affectionate black cat!

Awesome view with limited neighbors. We eat meals and watch sunrise and sunset over bay. Dolphins, kyackers. Bring binoculars. You are sharing space with gekos, praying mantis, and we seen moth size of a bat all outside not in bedroom. Same as would camping back home. And the 49 steps. We are hikers so no big deal. We hiked Captain Cook monument trail anyway.
We will be back again.

We booked this property a day before our arrival. We were very excited about this property but unfortunately our experience went downhill. The host was nice until he wasn’t, when we pointed out the issues. My husband had a traumatic experience with a pet cat as a child and there was a pet cat following him and expecting to be fed at the property that was undisclosed in the listing. He was scared to go out of the bedroom, he was having panic attacks and we had to make alternate housing arrangements within few hours of our arrival. The host started giving us crap and talking trash about rest of our trip being miserable and complaining about people in Hawaii not being nice and he was the only nice soul. It was unprofessional for him to speak like this us and talk trash about the locals. We just wanted to quickly get out of the situation.
Pros: the view from the deck is amazing
Cons:
a) there were lots of bugs, there was a huge cockroach in the bedroom.
b) there was a pet cat on the property. For folks with pet allergies and other trauma.
c) we could not sit on the deck due to mosquitoes.
d) it can get noisy, you can hear your neighbors who might be partying late. And the host himself said that he and his family won’t follow 9 pm noise ordinance and they were staying across the street from this rental property.

What an incredible place to stay on the big island. We loved the view, our sweet visitor Paele the kitty and numerous geckos. Fell asleep to the sounds of nature and enjoyed a killer view. 30 min from Kona-Kailua so be sure to go grocery shopping beforehand if you want snacks and food close at hand. It’s a bit windy to drive there but well worth the trip.

Awesome getaway
My wife and I had an awesome time at this place. It was just outside of town but not so far that we felt isolated. Definitely enjoyed our coffee on the porch every morning overlooking the bay!
