About this house rental
[A legal rental of minimum 30 days]
This is the story of a little beach house doing its part in preserving a sanctuary on this stretch of sand for the endangered Hawaiian monk seals. For many years the beach in front of the house was known as the home of a famously beloved seal named Honey Girl (Google her). After her passing in the Spring of 2020, other monk seals have taken over residence. One or two of them come to bask in the sun for an afternoon every few days and can be clearly seen about a stone's throw away from our patio.
You and your family (especially the little ones) are asked to participate in our effort in Hawaiian sea life conservation! When the monk seals are here, please help by erecting signs (available) around them to direct people away from the seals.
Don't be surprised if a roosters' crow wakes you in the morning. Located on the spectacular North Shore of Oahu you are surrounded by the Kualoa Mountains (Kualoa Ranch/Jurassic World) and your front yard is a sandy crescent beach (swimmable, sandy bottom) protected by barrier reefs, and turquoise water-great for swimming and watching our sea turtle and seal friends!!
Our comfortably furnished living room opens to the oceanfront patio with spectacular views! A small country kitchen and dining room have an ocean view and we have seen seals and turtles swam by right outside the dining room window. When you are not enjoying the beach (we have life jackets, swimming fins, children's sandbox toys, boogie boards, floaties, freesbee, etc.) there is cable TV (on a 60 in. TV), Netflix, Hawaiian-themed Hollywood blockbuster movies on DVDs, music CDs, books, some toddler toys, puzzle pieces, and board games for your family's enjoyment. How about turning off the TV to gaze at the stars with the little ones (telescope provided). Check the moon phase calendar as you may even be able to catch a full moon rise over the Pacific Ocean (you would never forget the view)!
Bring your fishing rods or spears. You may fish right out front (please obey size and species restrictions) and grill it for dinner on the patio under the stars!
Yoga mats are also available.
When it rains in the afternoon be sure to look out from the deck for 180 degrees of a giant rainbow arch, sometimes even double arches. Let the ocean surprise you during your stay with: driftwoods, drifting coconuts, sea turtles, moon light shooting through the clouds onto the distant ocean, and more! Fall asleep every night to the sound of the soothing waves. Run down a few steps from the patio and jump into the warm ocean waves whenever you want (no life guards, no tourists). Every angle and every view is Instagram-worthy! (Best colors at noon.)
The master bedroom has a private full bath and an oceanfront French door that opens to the ocean that will make you want to stay in bed forever!! Master bedroom has a newly renovated bathroom with a shower with a peekaboo view of the ocean.
The small second bedroom has a queen size bed and a cozy half bathroom.
The open space-design elevated loft area adjacent the living room has two twin size beds, a comfy lounge chair, and a desk with a printer. Fabulous ocean view from this loft space.
There is an inflatable queen size air mattress (about knee-high) that can be deployed in the living room for extra people. In total it sleeps 8, but 7th and 8th person would be on the air mattress.
The full bathroom in the hallway and the master bathroom are newly renovated each with a huge walk-in shower and a soothing rain-shower head.
Mature plantation provides privacy from adjacent neighbors.
Across the street: small convenience store for beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, charcoal, etc. 5-min drive north: Grocery store, pharmacy, Fish Taco, ice cream, 7-11, cold coconut stand, tiki woodcarving stand, and gift shops. 10-min drive: Famous Giovanni garlic shrimp truck in a field with 10+ other food trucks. 15-min drive north: fine dining, golf, spa at the Turtle Bay resort. 17-min drive north: Sunset beach, Banzai Pipeline, world famous surfing competitions (The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, HIC Pro Sunset Beach, Vans World Cup of Surfing, Billabong Pipe Masters, Volcom Pipe Pro, Da Hui Backdoor Shootout & Da Hui Pipeline Warriors, Sunset Open & Sunset Pro Junior).
This is the ultimate Hawaii experience for the family!!
** Air conditioning in all bedrooms and the living room (except the kitchen and bathrooms). In addition, ceiling fans are available in every room and living space.

This house was amazing! Great location too! Private beach with a short drive to stores and restaurants. Right across from a small store with drinks and alcohol. We were lucky enough to see 2 seals during our week stay and plenty of turtles! The house was stocked well with everything we needed for the week. Awesome beach chairs and toys to make it even easier to hang at the house all day. Would highly recommend this stay for any family or friend trip. The pack and play worked amazing for our 2 year old and there was even a mattress pad for it. Tony was an amazing host who was very laid back and easy to communicate with.

Everything from location, property, upkeep and owner (Tony) was truly AMAZING. The property was well kept up and the pictures truly capture it. Being just step away from the beach ideal. Sadie, the seal, paid us a visit on two of out days which made it even more memorable. If you are looking to avoid the bustle of Honolulu, but yet be close to the terrific Oahu destinations this is the place to be. Tony is very easy to reach and helped us with some great recommendations. Next time we are on Oahu this will be were we stay again!!

Overall house was the place where we gain an energy for short trips around Oahu, beach in front of the terrace was amazing. House was clean, kitchen well equipped, new wash machine and dryer did their job when we needed. parking place is for one car. Hope to go there again.

Everything was just perfect! Very relaxing atmosphere. Pictures do not do this place justice. Bathrooms were spacious and the showers were huge! The shower outside was certainly a nice touch to take off the sand before walking to the deck. The monk seal showed up a few times and saw a couple of turtles while swimming. Caught a few Papios from the back deck! Parking is a bit challenging but the aloha is felt when drivers on highway stop to let you back up into the parking spot (making this a non-issue). This place has everything you need. Reponse to texts to Tony were instant; very good information provided when needed. Thank you so much for allowing to stay at your piece of paradise.

We had a really nice time at this place!. It was a little smaller than I pictured it, but we all fit fine. There were 7 adults in our party. Three adults were able to fit nicely in the loft above the living area. I was concerned that we would wake up one of them that needed to rest more than the rest of us, but with the air conditioner running, it helped mute sounds so she still slept well enough. I have a bad back and usually have trouble with beds, but the bed in the master bedroom was very comfortable. Whenever we had a question or concern, we were answered quickly. They kindly let us stay longer on the day we were supposed to check out so that was exceptionally nice. That day it did not rain so we were able to finally enjoy the nice deck and beach. The reason for the 4 stars for the description was because it was listed as having a hot tub. They don't know how that happened but I'm sure it's been fixed by now. But, the person looking forward to it still had a wonderful time without it. There is much to do and see nearby. Our favorite place to eat was Papa Ole's, only a couple minutes away. The taco place near it has a great pina colada slushie/smoothie! It was rainy the whole time we were there but we still had a wonderful time.

We loved staying in the beach house! We saw the Hawaiian monk seal on the beach almost every single day, took walks down the beach, went boogie boarding, snorkeling… Tony had everything we needed from shampoo and conditioner, to snorkel stuff, stuff for cooking, and plenty of ice in the freezer! We loved it there!

The house was very clean and orderly when we arrived. We had great communication with the hosts and they answered my questions in just a short time. It was fantastic to be out of the tourist areas and be able to enjoy ourselves. Highly recommend!

Perfect for sitting on the porch watching the sunrise, seal watching, turtle watching, and just appreciating the beauty. North shore is the best!

This rental is as described. Sadie the monk seal came up on shore multiple times during our week. We had a sea turtle swimming right in front of the house most days and even a a few cowgirls riding their horses on the beach. Our granddaughter loved walking the shoreline and the rental is just a short drive from Haleiwa, the Dole Plantation, Kualoa Ranch and the PCC. The house accommodations were great for the five of us. Highly recommend this rental.

Pictures don't do the house justice. Amazing beach and amenities. Communication was great from beginning to end. Looking forward to booking this location in the future.

We had an amazing time at "The Happy Seal". The house was exactly what we expected from the site. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! We came to relax at a true Ocean Front Beach House and that is what we got. Tony & Chailoh are awesome! Anytime I had questions, they were prompt to answer and give suggestions. The hostess flowers and candy were a nice thought. The Oahu book was so helpful. Thanks for the extra information. The tree on the deck put out just enough shade during the day. I hope you keep the tree!! Gorgeous sunrises, Sadie was seen most days, and close to activities were a plus. The arrangement of the house worked out great for us. So did having a few items at the house when we arrived. We truly had a wonderful VRBO with wonderful hosts. Thanks again for everything!! I hope to visit again!

We can just second everything said before - great house, great location, nice interaction with house owner.

This house on the beach was perfect for us. Close to where we wanted to be and our own beach area without fighting the crowds on the public beaches. We even got to see Sadie who was resting on the beach just to the North of us. Beautiful home was everything we expected.

The happy seal was absolutely perfect! The location was a a perfect 45 min from just about everything which was perfect for us because driving the coastline was always exciting. (we are from west texas where we don't have water for 10 hours). My hittable and I had our 3 boys, 18, 15, and 11, so the extra things in the home like fishing poles, Snorkle equipment, and boogie boards were a total bonus! We saw Sadie AND KACEY more than once which was so cool!
The host included a ton of extras like seasonings, coffee, condiments, shampoo and conditioners, and even fresh cut flowers. All of which were utilized at some point while we were there. The address Benifit of not having to weigh down or luggage with bringing our own beach towels was also much appreciated!
Someone had mentioned in a review that there was a homeless camp down the road, we were slightly hesitant about booking because of that one review. BUT let me tell you... The entire island is a homeless camp. They are everywhere. And the tents in the public camping area hardly qualifications as a homeless camp. No one walked the beaches or came anywhere near our slice of heaven. It was far less homeless camp than that one review made it seem. Not scary at all.
The was a travel book for oahu and a guest book on the coffee table that were both incredibly helpful! Lots of great recommendations in both!
This will forever be one of the most memorable and amazing status for our family!

Sorry for the late review! We stayed a full two weeks mid December, and we could never have imagined a better home away from home!
Location, Location, Location! We wanted to relax from our busy lives and The Happy Seal house was exactly what we wanted and needed! Having the beach right off the deck and sitting watching and listening to the waves did not disappoint!
The house is exactly as described, had everything one needed to cook and save money from eating out! We tried many Hawaiian recipes by shopping at the grocery store and trying local ingredients!
Do NOT miss visiting the shop across the street!
I love every interaction with the hosts, they were responsive and very awesome to work with!

We just completed a 2 week stay at this property. It was fabulous!! It was absolutely incredible to step off of the deck and go swimming in the Pacific every morning. Monk seals swam up on the beach by our deck 4 times during our visit. It was amazing!! The Seal House was very comfortable and conveniently located on the North Shore. We will definitely stay here during our next visit to Hawaii!

Great stay, enjoyed the quiet beach. Host was very responsive. The house was a perfect set up for our family of 5. Good location & out of the hustle & bustle of the city.

Great location right on the beach. Loved listening to the waves lull you to sleep at night. The current was a little rough for swimming while we were there. We got to see the seal twice on the beach. The house was great. We didn’t cook while there, but looked like enough equipment if you wanted to.

We recently had the good fortune of staying at the "Happy seal". The house was perfect!!! Clean and inviting. There were 4 of us, all over 60. The house is situated on the beach, ocean waves lull you to sleep each night, and a morning swim is a necessity.
Close to all kinds of things to do, not too far from Honolulu and the action, but far enough to forget the crowds.
We would definitely book it again- the hosts were friendly and respond promptly to any message.
Thanks again- we loved it!!!

We wanted a place outside of the hustle and bustle of the South Shore, and we found it in Hauula. A beautiful house on its own beautiful, private beach, and the owners were nothing less than amazing. They provided every amenity we needed and quickly answered every question we had. Next time we come back to Hawaii, there is no doubt where we are staying!

A perfect location you couldn’t get any closer to the ocean unless you were in the water the views were unbelievable and it was a more isolated part of the island. We didn’t want to be in the madness and hustle and bustle of Waikiki Beach or Honolulu. The housing itself was adequate. It appears they are doing some upgrading which I hope they continue with. But our family would stay there again in a heartbeat just because of the beach the outside deck, and it was perfect for the six people who stayed there. It offered the best of the island. Thank you so much for sharing your home with my family.

Absolutely stunning! From start to finish the host was helpful and accommodating! The house was exactly as described, the waves literally came right up to the house, the sound of the ocean put me to sleep every night! The house was clean, and there were amenities there to use, everything worked great as far as appliances and AC. We got to see Sadie the day before we left so that was really neat as well :) On our last day there we had a late flight out and the host let us stay as late as we wanted past check out, and I was so appreciative, I feel like that was just going above and beyond! Thank you for a wonderful experience, I was so grateful to have this beautiful house on those rainy days instead of being stuck in a hotel room! Truly amazing :)

What a great place to stay! Right on the beach! My adult kids had fun trying to catch crabs in the evenings. Great location whether you want to head north or south for activities. Grocery store not too far away as well as restaurants. You feel secluded even though you're not. We had 7 adults staying here and we still felt comfortable. We would definitely stay again if we make it back to Hawaii. The sunrises were beautiful and Sadie the monk seal beached herself twice during our stay to sleep the day away.

Falling asleep and waking up to wave crashing on the beach was perfect. The homeowner, Tony and I, were in constant contact and he was very helpful in helping us navigate the "hot spots" on the island. The family and I had an amazing time and we hope to come back soon! Thank you Tony!

This house was perfect for our family. We were a group of 2 adults, 3 young children and a teenager. We stayed for 8 nights and would do so again in a heartbeat! The sandy beach was beautiful with no rocks on shore and very few small ones out in the water. We saw a sea turtle swim by once and a local man was swimming and came out of the water with a small squid, which he showed to the kids and let them hold. Down the beach to the left are some tide pools and to the right the beach stretches out to a point. Around the point, a stream flows into the ocean and the beach widens out. The deck is huge and the kids had water fights on it while not on the beach. There is a huge tree with a birdhouse that shades part of the deck and part of the beach. We were very grateful for that tree on the hot days! The house was clean with tons of extras. There was sun block, bug spray, aftersun aloe gel, flashlights, binoculars, tons of kids beach toys, squirt guns, balls, and inflatable water toys. We left pool noodles and a sand anchor for the beach umbrellas that were in the closet. There were only adult life jackets, but we were able to buy a youth life vest at a garage sale for $1. Bring your kiddo’s life jacket. That was the ONLY thing this place didn’t have that I wish it did. I appreciated that they did not throw out things left behind by other guests. There were some water bottles, condiments, as well as some great local coffees and beers left in the fridge. As far as location, the beach was great, but the house is situated on a blind curve with a narrow driveway and gate (typical for Hawaii). I backed in every time we returned home because I did not want to back out onto a busy road on a blind curve when it was time to leave the next day. Don’t let this keep you from booking though! This minor negative was FAR outweighed by all the great features of the property! The host could not have been more kind and quick to respond. We had trouble with the cable and she had the cable company out the next day to address it. Fantastic property and fantastic host! We will be back to stay here again!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Great location that is about equidistant to Honolulu and North Shore, so could venture out in either direction each day. Nice beachfront. Management was great. No complaints!

Location! Hauula is a quiet small town that has all of the basic necessities and easy to head south or north. The house is efficient and cozy with a beautiful lanai and beach access. Close to the public beach but we always felt we had our own piece of the ocean and sand. Sadie the monk seal visited twice and what a treat! Our only suggestion is more cutlery: forks, spoons and knives for 7 people. Had a great stay!

Our experience staying at the "Happy Seal" beach house was everything I hoped for . . . and more. These are some of the reasons we enjoyed it so much:
* Great Cancelation Policy--Which is so reassuring incase something unexpected happens.
* Sandy Beach (not rocky)--located right out the back door.
* Air Conditioning
* Comfortable beds
* Super well stocked--fishing poles, beach toys, lots of outdoor seating, lots of towels, working TV & appliances, etc.
* Super close to Polynesian Cultural Center & Laie Temple. We also enjoyed the Dole Plantation, Shark's Cove, Turtle Bay & Pearl Harbor.
* Grocery Stores close by.
* Very kind, respectful neighbors.
* Check In process--dependable & easy.
* Check Out procedures--very minimal.
*** The Host (Chailoh) is incredible--excellent communicator.
We loved watching early morning sunrises--with our feet in the sand listening to & watching the waves flow onto the shore.
Our sons enjoyed fishing. And our grandchildren LOVED catching lizards & sand crabs.
* I would jump at the chance to stay at this beach home again.
(It just couldn't have been better.) Such a RICH experience . . .Perfectly Magical!

The house was as described. The view from the deck was incredible, and the sunrises were spectacular. There were 5 adults in our group and we had ample room without getting in each other’s way. The hosts were great to deal with and provided quick responses to emails. We did not get to see the monk seal at the house; however, we did get to see one in the North Shore area near Waimea Bay. It was an awesome vacation!

Firstly I must thank Chailoh for being so lovely and considerate during our stay, nothing was too much trouble for her from start to finish, she patiently answered all my queries!
Now the house, it is a little tired in a couple of places BUT it had everything we needed, very well equipped, beautifully clean and we all feel in love with the house and its location, we all found it very relaxing, it felt like a real home and we didnt want to leave. Sitting on the verandah eating our meals was a real pleasure .Unfortunately we didnt see the seal, but we saw turtles and found all the little crabs very entertaining. We cant wait to stay again, thank you Chailoh for making our trip so amazing ,you have a lovely home.

Good but not great
It’s an awesome place directly at the ocean but clearly needs some maintenance, upgrade of the kitchen-equipment would be helpful and an update of the VRBO photos.
The fantastic highlight of the property is the terrace next to the ocean and we could also see the famous monk seal “Sadie” several times. Also the service and availability of house manager - Chailoh- was great and with passion.

Beautiful home
My family and I stayed at this beautiful home from the end of June to July for 7 nights. It was our first trip to Hawaii and this home helped make it one we will never forget. We saw the seal everyday except for one. The home was just like the pictures and very clean. We did use the blow up mattress for our two youngest and they said it was comfy. The beds were very comfortable and we all loved the big showers. There were plenty of towels along with beach towels to use. There was also a cooler we used for food and drinks. There was a Foodland not to far down the road for groceries. The location of this home put us not to far from food trucks and plenty of snorkeling and beautiful sites. Shark’s Cove is a must but go early for parking. We are already planning our return visit. Thank you so much for all the wonderful memories.

Disappointed
I usually do not write a negative review, but this is an exception. Very unhappy with the house. First off pulling up to home was difficult. Directly on busy Kam Highway. Traffic busy during the day. Had to park on side of road. We also parked across the street (small convenience store) and would reverse in as fast as we could to avoid being hit from oncoming traffic. The security fence around property was relatively new. Although once we pulled into the driveway we were unable to close gate. A small car you can. Anything larger very difficult. There were homeless people across at the convenience store were digging through the garbage. One was yelling at my husband. A little scary.
Upon entering house very dirty. Smelt like mildew and mold upon entering home. House very outdated. The pictures DO NOT depict the actual house. I believe the picture were taken when house was first listed. Understandably living in the beach things rust, but when you are renting for the price your asking it SHOULD be maintained. Many lights were burnt out, kitchen and bathrooms were dirty - I had to clean in order to use (gross). Dust on the counters and furniture. Once we made it through the initial shock, we tried to enjoy the back porch/lanai. The table is peeling, the cheap plastic chairs were filthy. My mother nearly fell out of one (the leg bent due to a crack), the “beach chairs” in the shed were so rusted you couldn’t open them. My husband used WD40 to get them open, but only 2 would somewhat work. The next day my daughter cut her leg on the rusted hinge. Laundry machines are outside behind the house in the gravel. No lighting or coverage. So do your laundry during day hours or have a flash light.
I could go on and on with the things that were wrong with the home. Thank God we were busy most days and didn’t hang in the house.
Upon check out owner texted me and accused us of smoking in the house. Not one of us smoke. It was the nasty smell of the house. He needs better house keepers, he needs to clean and update the house - or post accurate pictures of the home. Location is very old Hawaii (expect that). For your safety, Keep doors locked!
Overall until the owner updates the house or post pictures that are accurate, Rent a different home!

Amazing family vacation
We had an amazing time staying here and could not have been more pleased with the property. The number of rooms and bathrooms were exactly as promised, the beach was amazing, Tony was super friendly and helpful. We had everything we needed and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our week.
We were not blessed with the opportunity to see a seal but that might have had something to do with all the football our boys played on the beach in front of the house.
We highly recommend a stay here!

Well appointed
Thoroughly enjoyed waking up early in the morning, coffee in hand and watching the sun come up. Saw lots of wildlife including sea turtles and of course Sadie (neighbor said the name) the seal lounging on the beach.

This place is wonderful! We were traveling with babies and the proximity to the beach made this trip
This place is GREAT. The host was incredibly nice! The ocean front location was key for us traveling with babies, and the spot was away from crowds. The deck is much bigger than it looks in the pictures, and we used it a lot! The bedrooms are very spaced out so that was also great for napping babies.

Family Vacation
What a great house right on the beach! It was myself, my husband, my mother and our 2 college daughters. Plenty of room for all. The house had everything we needed. We loved the back deck and spent several days at the beach swimming and sunning. The seal did come up 2 different days and hung out for a bit-was really cool to see.
House was in a great location-grocery stores and a pharmacy nearby. All the food truck choices were amazing. Was so nice to be off the beaten path. Would highly recommend this house.

Family Vacation!
My family and I had a wonderful time. The check in process was seem less. Bedsides going to the grocery store the house was stocked with everything you need. Having your own private beach made it a perfect experience. There were plenty of places to go near by, like the botanical garden, byodo temple and Kualoa ranch. There’s a little market right across the street. I would definitely stay here again and recommend this place to anyone!

A real beach getaway
We were looking for the perfect beach house in Hawaii... My list was specific 1) right on the beach 2) swimmable beach with nice waves (not too big but not too small) 3) in our budget. We found this house and it was perfect for us. Hit all our needs and wants. It was a relaxing week of family time AND the monk seal graced our beach with her presence. We had a fabulous vacation!

Beautiful and perfect location
Our stay at this house was exactly what we were looking for. Perfect size for me, my husband, our 12 year old son and my parents. It had everything we needed - boogie boards, beach chairs, beach towels, kitchen well stocked, etc. Location was great - on the north east side of the island. Two grocery stores within 5 minute drive and loads of food trucks within 10 minutes. This house is literally on the beach. It doesn’t get much better than this! We would definitely stay here again.
