Description and History:

174 Saint Philip Street, Unit D– The Alexander Wilson

The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by Dr. Samuel Wilson in 1819. The property was part of the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. One month after purchasing the property he deeded it to his son Alexander B Wilson. Wilson, listed as a planter, built this house in 1820 and occupied the property until his death on November 20, 1840.

Designed in the distinctive “Charleston Single House” style, this home boasts a variety of unique and charming architectural characteristics that have contributed to its widespread popularity. The structure is one room wide and extends several rooms deep, with the narrow side facing the street. Full length piazzas provide ample outdoor living space and shade to keep the house cool. In addition to the piazza, this home has an additional porch with a raised bar table, suitable for outdoor dining. This second-floor apartment is characterized by tall ceilings and large, symmetrically arranged windows on the facades, steep gabled standing seam roofs.

This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, standing seam copper roof, copper guttering, original moldings, plasterwork, old glass windows, and solid panel doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. It's the real deal!

Study the area map and you will see our property shares a common border with Charleston’s famous King Street, renowned for shopping, dining, and nightlife. You are as close as it gets to King Street. With a large, landscaped lot you can rest assured your vehicle is nearby.

Neighborhood:
Saint Philip Square is situated adjacent to Charleston’s renowned King Street along the southern boundary of Cannonborough. Our property provides unrivaled access to King Street’s premier shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Within a two-block radius, you'll find over thirty restaurants offering international cuisines including French, Spanish, Italian, American, Mexican, Japanese, and Greek. This impressive selection doesn't even count the gourmet sandwich shops, coffee bars, pizza spots, oyster bars, wine bars, bakeries, ice creameries, or vibrant entertainment and music venues.

Charleston, like Rome, is unique in that its rich historical and cultural offerings are situated in a rather small area; both are extremely walkable cities. All within a leisurely stroll, you'll discover the historic Charleston Battery, Broad and East Bay Street, Waterfront Park, the Four Corners of Law, historic churches and private homes, the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Charleston Museum, the Aiken-Rhett House, the Charleston Children's Museum, the Charleston Visitors Bureau, the College of Charleston, and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). All these locations are easily accessible in a thirty-minute walk--no to need move your car from our parking lot.

Don’t feel like walking? Take an Uber or Lyft or try a Pedicab or rickshaw. The Charleston Black Cab Limo is excellent for larger groups, and you travel in luxury. In addition, the city provides free shuttle bus services utilizing its attractive DASH trolleys.

Want to explore further? We are two minutes by automobile to the main cross-town artery which easily connects to major highways making the Airport, Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Folly Beach, Mt. Pleasant, and Ashley River Plantations (Drayton Hall, Middelton Place, and Magnolia Gardens) readily assessable. By automobile, none of these locations exceeds a trip of 25 minutes.

Whether you’re here for the history, the food, or the vibrant community, our location places you in the heart of it all.

Our only criticism is that for the first 2 days we were under the possible threat of maybe getting towed as we were given only 1 parking pass yet had 3 vehicles. Jamie said we were ok on Friday but might have to move Saturday morning. There were few people there until Saturday afternoon. We never heard back and one of our party left Sunday morning early so we assumed we were ok. Our host hasn't reached out since we left Monday. Security deposit refund?

6 of us enjoyed this property for a bachelorette weekend, it was a perfect spot! Walking distance from great bars and restaurants, and only a half hour walk from waterfront park and the ocean. The porch was a great place to hang out, and the property was well maintained and easy to access.

We had a great time at this property! It was clean and in a great location. The only issue is that the description said it slept 8 people with 3 beds and a pullout couch. Our first night we went to use the pull out couch and there was a piece of paper stating that it was broken since 06/20/24 and that we would have to use the air mattress in the closet. I did not appreciate this as it felt sneaky, and we were expecting to have the pullout as a sleeping option. I feel we paid too much per night for two of us to have to sleep on an air mattress.

This was a great property for CofC graduation! The location was ideal as we were able to walk to the graduation ceremony. Onsite parking was a major plus as was the very inviting porch with ample seating for 6. This property had spacious bedrooms, nice bathrooms, very comfortable living room (especially the couch), and a kitchen that was suitable for meal prep. Would definitely stay here again.
