Description and History:
174 Saint Philip Street, Unit D– The Alexander Wilson
The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by Dr. Samuel Wilson in 1819. The property was part of the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. One month after purchasing the property he deeded it to his son Alexander B Wilson. Wilson, listed as a planter, built this house in 1820 and occupied the property until his death on November 20, 1840.
Designed in the distinctive “Charleston Single House” style, this home boasts a variety of unique and charming architectural characteristics that have contributed to its widespread popularity. The structure is one room wide and extends several rooms deep, with the narrow side facing the street. Full length piazzas provide ample outdoor living space and shade to keep the house cool. In addition to the piazza, this home has an additional porch with a raised bar table, suitable for outdoor dining. This second-floor apartment is characterized by tall ceilings and large, symmetrically arranged windows on the facades, steep gabled standing seam roofs.
This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a newly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it situated on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old hardwood floors, tall ceilings, standing seam copper roof, copper guttering, original moldings, plasterwork, old glass windows, and solid panel doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. It's the real deal!
Saint Philip Square:
Saint Philip Square is an award-Winning collection of historic buildings meticulously curated to enhance your stay in Charleston, and this property is one of seventeen unique rentals. The grounds feature five special outdoor garden areas with amenities such as fountains,
dining areas, fire pits, and covered barbecues. In the evening, this oasis sparkles with outdoor lighting, making it the perfect place for nightcaps after a day of exploring.
Your unit at Saint Philip Square includes a private with comfortable seating, making it ideal for a morning cup of coffee or a restful break between city adventures and socializing with good friends.
Study the area map and you will see our property shares a common border with Charleston’s famous King Street, renowned for shopping, dining, and nightlife. You are as close as it gets to King Street. With a large, landscaped lot you can rest assured your vehicle is nearby.
Neighborhood:
Saint Philip Square is situated adjacent to Charleston’s renowned King Street along the southern boundary of Cannonborough. Our property provides unrivaled access to King Street’s premier shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Within a two-block radius, you'll find over thirty restaurants offering international cuisines including French, Spanish, Italian, American, Mexican, Japanese, and Greek. This impressive selection doesn't even count the gourmet sandwich shops, coffee bars, pizza spots, oyster bars, wine bars, bakeries, ice creameries, or vibrant entertainment and music venues.
Charleston, like Rome, is unique in that its rich historical and cultural offerings are situated in a rather small area; both are extremely walkable cities. All within a leisurely stroll, you'll discover the historic Charleston Battery, Broad and East Bay Street, Waterfront Park, the Four Corners of Law, historic churches and private homes, the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Charleston Museum, the Aiken-Rhett House, the Charleston Children's Museum, the Charleston Visitors Bureau, the College of Charleston, and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). All these locations are easily accessible in a thirty-minute walk--no to need move your car from our parking lot.
Don’t feel like walking? Take an Uber or Lyft or try a Pedicab or rickshaw. The Charleston Black Cab Limo is excellent for larger groups, and you travel in luxury. In addition, the city provides free shuttle bus services utilizing its attractive DASH trolleys.
Want to explore further? We are two minutes by automobile to the main cross-town artery which easily connects to major highways making the Airport, Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, Folly Beach, Mt. Pleasant, and Ashley River Plantations (Drayton Hall, Middelton Place, and Magnolia Gardens) readily assessable. By automobile, none of these locations exceeds a trip of 25 minutes.
Whether you’re here for the history, the food, or the vibrant community, our location places you in the heart of it all.

Our only criticism is that for the first 2 days we were under the possible threat of maybe getting towed as we were given only 1 parking pass yet had 3 vehicles. Jamie said we were ok on Friday but might have to move Saturday morning. There were few people there until Saturday afternoon. We never heard back and one of our party left Sunday morning early so we assumed we were ok. Our host hasn't reached out since we left Monday. Security deposit refund?

6 of us enjoyed this property for a bachelorette weekend, it was a perfect spot! Walking distance from great bars and restaurants, and only a half hour walk from waterfront park and the ocean. The porch was a great place to hang out, and the property was well maintained and easy to access.

We had a great time at this property! It was clean and in a great location. The only issue is that the description said it slept 8 people with 3 beds and a pullout couch. Our first night we went to use the pull out couch and there was a piece of paper stating that it was broken since 06/20/24 and that we would have to use the air mattress in the closet. I did not appreciate this as it felt sneaky, and we were expecting to have the pullout as a sleeping option. I feel we paid too much per night for two of us to have to sleep on an air mattress.

Very nice and clean property and location is great to historic downtown. Plenty of space in house (we had 4 adults) and beds were sooooo comfy!

This was a great property for CofC graduation! The location was ideal as we were able to walk to the graduation ceremony. Onsite parking was a major plus as was the very inviting porch with ample seating for 6. This property had spacious bedrooms, nice bathrooms, very comfortable living room (especially the couch), and a kitchen that was suitable for meal prep. Would definitely stay here again.

This is a beautiful, historic
, Charleston style unit. Plenty of space. We had five in our party but could have had two more without an issue. The unit was very very clean. Came equipped with everything we needed. Yummy smelling Dove soap product to are a nice touch. Beds are very comfortable. Towels are soft. And again CLEAN. Washer and dryer are small so we did one small load per day. Super convenient. On-site parking is great. Location is great. Several coffee shops, yummy donuts, bagels, breakfast spots and food choices within a five minute walk. The market and historic sites near the water front are about a 15-20 mi it’s walk away. I loved sitting outside in the morning with my cup of tea. The porches have beautiful plants and plenty of seating. This unit also has a small private patio with a table which was nice. Our only complaint is noise. There’s lots of noise during the day from trucks and workers. One night there was also a very loud party a block away. Obviously not the fault of the property owners and management. It is a city after all. We definitely would stay at one of the properties onsite again.

A girl’s trip to see Charleston. This apartment was great. Very clean , everything was as advertised.
Property Manager, Jamie was terrific and even offered to come over at 10:30 pm to help with a TV issue. So nice to have a manager that responded.

This property was exactly as described and worked out great for us! It met our needs of 3 bedrooms and 2 baths, with an outdoor space to enjoy. We had our coffee on the porch each morning which was very enjoyable! We also used the outdoor commom area for evening drinks which was very nice. The living area is a bit small, but it was not an issue. The location is awesome! It's walking distance to everything! The property manager, Jamie, was easy to communicate with! There is construction going on in the neigborhood that was a bit noisy at times, but this is only an temporary issue.

Other than being on the second floor, the location and property were perfect for our girls’ trip. Just a couple of blocks away from a free bus stop we were able to get everywhere we wanted—for FREE—and not worry about parking. There were some minor things needing attention. We informed the management and they said they would address them. All in all, we can highly recommend this place on St. Philips Square!

The property was just as described, clean and well stocked. The beds were very comfortable. The only drawback was the noise of the nearby bars. The available sound machine was helpful. The location was within walking distance to most of our activities.

This property was one of the nicest and best stocked properties I have used from VRBO. The location is convenient. The apartment was clean, spacious and really quite lovely. The information provided on the location, check in, and amenities was thorough and clear. I really cant say enough good things about the property. Would stay there again anytime and recommend it to friends.

Lovely and very convenient location. Very comfortable inside. All we needed for a girls trip. Highly recommend the place. Owner was very fast on responding to any questions I had. We are starting a girls Christmas trip every year now that a couple of the grandkids are getting older to appreciate and enjoy the trip. Charleston and the place will be great memories for the 3 grandkids and the other women of the family.

There were three couples who stated in this unit. Plenty of space. Very clean and well stocked. Great location to see Charleston either on foot or driving distance. Just keep in mind, you are in downtown Charleston area highly populated with students and party goers on King street. It will be noisy on the weekends. We had a great time. Will be back.

Can't wait to return!
The property was everything we could have hoped! Spacious, charming and clean. Each room was bright and beautifully furnished, just as pictured. With a great location we were able to walk to restaurants and shopping on King Street and with the full kitchen, we also had the option of eating in. We came on a very hot weekend and the air conditioning worked perfectly. We did trip the power once without realizing it but we are able to get ahold on the property manager within minutes and she helped us fix it and even offered to come over if we couldn't figure it out. Thank you for a wonderful trip to Charleston! We will definitely be back.

Excellent Property!
We stayed here for our son's wedding weekend in Charleston It was perfect spot to use as home base and was extremely comfortable and convenient. The property managers were very responsive and the property is stocked with so many extras. Every time we started a sentence with, "I wonder if they have..." we ended it with "yes". I highly recommend this property!

Nice change from a hotel
We wanted to stay someplace different from a hotel. This was very unique and fit our needs. It was clean, well stocked and within walking distance to a lot of shops/restaurants. The property manager was quick to answer calls and emails. I would recommend for adults, however, I would not feel safe with young children on the upper balconies. We would definitely stay at one of these properties again.
