for all tastes.
Clew Bay and Louisburgh just outside the west Mayo town offer a multitude
of beautiful, jaw-dropping scenery, while the 42km Greenway is the longest
off-road walking and cycling trail in Ireland.
The Greenway traverses Ireland’s Atlantic coast between Westport town and
Achill Island and visits the picturesque villages of Newport and Mulranny
(Mallaranny).
It passes by some of the West of Ireland’s most dramatic mountains and
offers magnificent views of Clew Bay and its many islands
There are a variety of historical and cultural sites including- Croagh
Patrick, Westport House (Which has lots of attractions for kids) the Ceide
Fields, Ballintubber and Kylemore Abbeys, Knock Shrine, Rockfleet Castle,
Foxford Woollen Mills, the National Famine Monument at Murrisk.
This is a an area of living history: rich in Stone, Bronze and Iron Age
antiquities, as well as early Christian sites. There is also a high
concentration of ancient burial monuments around the county.
The scenery becomes ever more spectacular as you explore. Drive towards

The Céide Fields of Mayo have exposed 2,000 acres of stone walled fields
built over hills and valleys with a unique interpretative centre.
There are mountains, lakes and sea, even islands as Achill is connected to
the mainland. Wet day or dry day, you'll find plenty to do.
Archaeology
Carracastle has at least 20 Pre-historic Forts in the area. Stone and
Earthen Forts are noted in a book on Carracastle published by the late
local historian Vincent Coleman.
