About this house rental
This five-bedroom/three-bath home sits on five acres of land in the Kohala Estates. We specifically designed and built the house as a family vacation gathering spot. Its high ceilings and 760 square feet of windows make it particularly light and airy. Tradewinds and 13 ceiling fans help to keep it cool. The kitchen and the master bedroom have 180-degree ocean views plus the sweep of the Kohala Mountains, Maunakea, Hualalai, Mauna Loa, and nearly the entire Kona-Kohala Coast.
From the lanai, guests can watch a sprinkling of fishing boats, tour boats, military vessels, and pleasure boats. Several times a day a tug towing a barge pulls in and out of nearby Kawaihae Harbor. With good luck and timing, guests can spot Hawaiian spinner dolphins, humpback whales, and the occasional green flash. We can't guarantee blue skies and no mosquitoes; but odds are better here than anywhere else in the central Pacific. The house sits in the rain shadow of the Kohala Mountains, and annual rainfall totals are typically in the single digits!
We have tried to make our house a 'home away from home' for our guests. It is attractive and comfortable without being so fancy that guests are afraid to relax. The library boasts plenty of books and movies.
Extras: Guests will find enough kitchenware and linens to choke a flea market! The kitchen is well stocked with small appliances, utensils, pots and pans, dishes, glassware, flatware, and spices. Kids will enjoy several cubic feet of Legos and building blocks as well as puzzles, games, books, and other toys. Binoculars, beach towels, coolers, beach chairs, boogie boards, sand toys, and beach umbrellas are left out for guests to enjoy.. Visitors will not need to bring much besides their clothes and personal items.
Many of our guests consider this 'their' second home; and accordingly, our most popular times can be booked over a year in advance. Fall and late spring usually have the best availability.
Guests will also enjoy a Blu-Ray player in every bedroom, a satellite TV with Hi-Def in the living room, and WiFi Internet access.
Location, Location, Location: Most of our guests appreciate not only the ocean and mountain views but the house's convenient location. It is in a semi-rural neighborhood, which has no street lights and a myriad of stars at night. Weather is usually warm and dry. Within easy driving distance to the Big Island's premiere beaches and golf courses, it is also conveniently located within driving range of Kailua-Kona and Hilo. Good restaurants and shopping opportunities are an easy drive away. Neighboring houses are quite a distance away, and the neighborhood is quiet and safe.
Each day offers lovely sunrises and sunsets as well as moonrises and moonsets. The star-scape on a clear night is breathtaking.
Home away from home: The house is very comfortable, clean, and well-maintained. Many of our guests say that they feel right at home as soon as they walk in the door. The living room walls are lined with books, videos, and art work. The 2400-square-foot house features a large central great room with bedrooms and bathrooms across the back and south side. This open floor plan allows for privacy as well as communal activities.
Most of our guests especially appreciate the wrap-around lanai, which includes 840 square feet facing the ocean. The lanai has five table-and-chair sets, two lounge chairs, two small tables, and a gas barbecue, which makes it perfect for communal meals or individual relaxing and reading.
The driveway is large enough for off-street parking for up to six vehicles.
The house is surrounded with irrigated foliage and flowers, which are especially colorful and beautiful in the spring and summer months.
People who are looking for a getaway or a place to get-together at a reasonable price will find that Hale Kephart fills the bill.

The property is perfect for large groups, offering amazing ocean views from the lanai, spacious rooms, and well-stocked amenities. Guests enjoyed whale watching, sunsets, and family-friendly features. Highly recommended!

This was a perfect space for our family and we all enjoyed it very much. It was a tad out of the way but we were primarily there to be together with our son and his family who live in Japan. The Kepharts were wonderfully accommodating of our needs and we were all grateful for that as it made our arrival and departure much smoother. Our young grandchildren were together for the first time and got along wonderfully well. They enjoyed the games, books and toys. Our sons and daughters-in-law and daughter loved the lanai and we all spent our mornings and evenings enjoying the sunrise and sunset. The kitchen was fully equipped and worked well with multiple cooks! Everything was really great.

The view from the porch made every sunset even more beautiful. A cozy home and family friendly

Great views and lanai. Comfortably furnished. Everything you need for cooking. Plenty of beach towels and chairs. Some things are dated but everything works. Lots of windows and fans but gets hot when weather is hot.

My Family and I had a wonderful stay at this property!!!!
Absolutely no misrepresentation of the property. You will find a home that is maintained well and stocked up with family in mind.
The sunsets and ocean views are amazing.
Stargazing from the lanai was one of our favorite nighttime activities.
The property owners were very helpful in planning for the trip and they literally live right next door. We did have one issue during our stay. I contacted the owners before we departed for our daily outing and by the time we returned it was corrected, I only bring this up as an example of how responsive the owners are.
We tried several beaches during our stay, Hapuna Beach State Park ended up being the overall favorite of our group, the park is about 12-15 minutes away from the house.
Again, we had a wonderful time, I would not hesitate to rent this property again in the future.

House was amazing and location was perfect. Overall we were thrilled with the property. I did send a couple texts to the owners and never received a response but not a big deal.

This was our 4th stay at Hale Kephart as this is such a unique property. It has expansive ocean views and we saw whales every day while staying early March 2024. House has 5 bedrooms and 3 full baths, so very little time spent on waiting for open bathroom. Kitchen was fully stocked with utensils, pots and pans, dishes and fair amount of cooking oils and spices.
Don and Kerrill have been wonderful hosts each and every time and can be a great resource for information about "The Spots".
Already looking forward to next year's stay.

We spent every morning watching whales on the lanai. The house is very spacious. The weather is amazing on that side of the island. There were 9 of us that stayed here. It was very roomy. We loved our daily wildlife visits. We will definitely return and reuse this house!

This is an awesome property. It is everything as advertised. It was so easy for our large group to relax and have fun. It was organized; there was plenty of spices and soaps and coffee pots. We will definitely try to return.

Our group of 11 had a wonderful stay in this home. We never once felt crowded and our kids had a fun time having adventures in the “jungle”. There were plenty of parking spots and everything we could think to ask for was available, thanks to our accommodating hosts. . The beach supplies and beach towels were a nice touch. We would love to stay here again next time.

The house was perfect for the 12 of us! Just far enough away from the noise, and easy point to get around the island.
The hosts respond immediately to any questions and provide plenty of information.
Thanks for all the tips, Don!
We'd stay again in a heartbeat!
Aloha!

Kerril and Don had a beautiful home that was stocked with everything you could need for a vacation from towels to boardgames books to read on the beautiful balcony. We enjoyed our stay thoroughly very friendly and quick with responses would highly recommend.

Don and Kerrill were great hosts. They were very responsive and helpful. The house, especially the lanai was wonderful, though from mid-afternoon until sundown the house did get a little warm for some of the family. The wrap-around lanai with views of the water was fantastic and we spent a lot of our at-home time there.

Property is situated just 300 feet up from the ocean which gives you beautiful 180 degree views from the lanai. House was well stocked with the necessities and there was plenty of room for our party of nine. The kids loved watching movies and the adults loved relaxing on the lanai. There's always a breeze blowing, and the family of turkeys and the many species of birds were fun to watch. We only had a couple of questions for the owners, which were answered right away. If you want a comfortable, relaxing get-away, this is the place.

Another great stay at Hale Kephart with family. Don and Kerrill are the perfect hosts, ensuring that our stay was enjoyable with proper communication. The house is in a perfect location in Kohala Estates where it is peaceful and quiet with expansive ocean views. Wrap around lanai with three dining tables and lounge chairs provided everyone with room to eat and lounge while taking in the views and watching the abundance birds that frequent the property.
House was clean and well stocked with towels in the bathrooms and kitchen gadgets galore. Plenty of cups and dishes and tons of cooking supplies like spices and oils.
We had a 4 year old with us and there were 2 bins full of toys and lots of childrens books. Adults have bookshelves full of books and board games to boot. But it's Hawaii and we want to go places right?
Well the house is 7 minutes to kid friendly Spencer Beach, and 15 minutes away from Hapuna Beach or Beach 69 if snorkeling is your preference. Resorts, Waimea Town, and Hawi are all within a 30-40 minute drive. In other words, Hale Kephart is close to everything for a complete Hawaii experience.
This year we had a party of 6 and in 2022 it was a party of 10. We never felt overcrowded. This is a great spot to stay for large groups or families.

The home fit our extended family of 13 perfectly. There was everything from crib and high chair for our youngest grandchild, blocks and toys for our preschoolers and books and boogie boards for our teens. It was in the perfect spot to access sandy beaches and to go exploring. Thank you for a wonderful vacation/family reunion!!!

The property is exactly as described. Very generously stocked with everything you may need. It was perfect for our family vacation. Any complaints I could think of would be outside the control of the owners. They can’t control the weather! We came while it had been extraordinarily rainy in the weeks prior and that brought out the expected bugs. But they also had spray and candles for that as well. On the plus side the rain turned the usual arid landscape a lush and beautiful green!
The views from the lanai are unbelievable. We came during whale season and we could see them out there daily. Just an amazing experience to watch whales play out there from the kitchen cooking as well.
We were worried about the heat being without a/c but it was never much of an issue. The winds kept the house sufficiently cool with the fans on and windows open.
We found the beds to be comfortable and there were tons of board games for the kids and movies for adults and children.
All around fantastic location and stay. We are already looking into getting a group together for a future visit!

Over all it was a great stay. Coffee and dinner on the lani was the best. Short drives to the beaches and shopping. Found hikes all around. I would definitely recommend this house for a family or group vacation.

We were a group of 10 people. 3 couple pairs, 2 single people, and 2 kids under 4years old. This house was amazing for all of us. The house had some great views of the ocean and native plants in the area. The internal layout is a single floor, open floor space. The kitchen is huge and fully stocked. They have an extensive library fo books and DVDs for people of all ages including children's books. They also have a closet full of children's toys (ponys, dolls, toy cars, build logs, etc), a ton of beach toys, beach chairs, boogie boards, beach towels.
The home owners live nearby and were great at communicating with us whenever we had questions. There was a pretty big storm that came by and the owners were incredible at responding to us. If we come back to the island we'd love to stay here again.

We enjoyed staying at this property. There were only 2 of us but we booked at the last minute - this property can accommodate a lot of people. My favorite thing about this place is the location. It is close to the nicest beaches on the island and the
Resorts on the Kohala coastline. It was very comfortable and had everything we needed.

We rented this property for 9 adults and an infant. There is definitely no shortage of room. Don and Kerrill are amazing to work with, and they took care of any issues we had promptly so we could spend our time enjoying our vacation. We will definitely rent this property again the next time we are vacationing on the big island.

This was a spectacular rental home. The location was superb. We were high above the ocean with great sunset views. Dark skies for star gazing. Very little light or noise pollution. We were near several snorkeling beaches. We rented gear just below the fabulous fresh fish market 5 minutes away.
Everything was as advertised. Extremely well stocked from kitchen gear to beach towels. If you thought you something was missing, you either didn’t look throughly enough or you really didn’t need it anyway. I’m hoping to rent again.

We found this home great for our family gathering. We had travellers from age 8-40+ and all had space and enjoyed the home. Sunset dinners from the lanai can not be beat.

Both Don and Kerrill were accommodating and very responsive. We had a big family and lots of sightseeing so the house was mostly a gathering place for dinner and sleeping. The house had everything from movies, games and books to a great view! This was a beautiful and wonderful place. I would recommend it as well as stay here again. Mahalo Don and Kerrill!

Our stay at the Rainbow House
Mahalo Kerrill & Don. Our family if 11 loved staying at your house which we named “The Rainbow House.” So well equipped, and we spent many hours on the beautiful front porch. Some of our highlites were the spectacular beaches close by, the markets in Waimea and Hawi, and watching sunsets from the front porch.
Mahalo again. Wishing you the best. Aloha!

Great stay for adult groups looking to live the island dream!
Hale Kephart was our home away from home during our week-long destination wedding stay on the Big Island this February. Beautiful sunrises & sunsets with a full view of the coast, lush landscaping & endless trade wind breezes made our stay so memorable. Every morning we were treated to gorgeous ocean jewel-tone views & whale watching while we listened to tropical birdsong and sipped local coffee & teas.
The home is secure & super convenient for getting to nearby beaches, historic attractions, Waimea, northern coastal towns, Waikoloa Hilton and other resorts, and it is positioned for simple highway access to head out to Kona or Hilo for further exploration of the island. Grab fresh bentos & other favorite snacks at the gas station on Akoni Pule Hwy & Kawaihae Rd before hitting your adventure road. Don’t forget the shave ice at the shops next door after a long beach day.
There was plenty of parking for our group of 9 adults with SUVS at the house, with 5 comfortable private bedrooms & 3 full bathrooms so that everyone could do their own thing & chill.
The house is packed with ALL the amenities you could possibly need to vacation with peace of mind & mind your budget. There was a well-stocked spice cabinet & we hosted additional friends with ease for a large grilled meal during the week. Plus, the beach toys, towels, coolers & snorkeling equipment, & sunscreens made it easy to hit the shores early & often.
Our hosts were SO hospitable & responsive. They ensured we were quickly settled in & taken care of during our entire stay. They gave our group plenty of privacy & great recommendations for things to do to get to know the area and locals. Check out the house’s photo album & abundant library to enhance your knowledge of the area and its history.
10/10 recommend! Mahalo to the Kepharts for their kindness during this magical Hawaiian vacation & authentic aloha experience.
P. S. This location would be great for a multigenerational family on vacay as well. Lots of toys & activity stuff for kiddos and teens to do.
P. P. S. The *only* downside for this property is that the house is not accessible for folks with mobility needs (like many places on the island) b/c the stairs to get up to the home’s entry & no access ramp. If you have a mobility device or can’t do a few stairs walk-up, it would be a tough in & out. But, if you can do stairs with assistance, the front steps are manageable if you take it slow & steady.
