A Pacific Paradise in Mexico. The sister cities of Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa could not be more radically different. While Ixtapa has the hustle and bustle of a high-traffic tourist destination, Zihuatanejo still possesses the quaint qualities of its small-town roots. Zihuatanejo, or Zihua as it's affectionately called, is full of beautiful beaches, friendly people and an easygoing lifestyle. Once a sleepy fishing village, Zihuatanejo is now a thriving vacation destination which has retained its historic charm, even as it has grown in popularity. At its heart is the waterfront walkway, Paseo del Pescador (Fisherman's Path) where narrow cobblestone streets hide wonderful local restaurants, bars, boutiques and local artisan studios. Fishermen meet every morning on the beach to sell their catch of the day and at night, young lovers and families stroll carefree along the romantic waterfront sidewalk.
Popular Attractions
Playa Las Gatas
Cats Beach is on the opposite side of the bay from town and only accessible by boat. Its the most popular snorkeling beach in Zihuatanejo and colorful tropical fish can be seen along the man-made breakwater, as well as the abundant coral and sea urchins. At the far end of the beach surfing is possible and a path leads to the lighthouse on the point of the bay.
Playa La Ropa
The name “Clothes Beach” refers to the sinking of a merchant ship near the bay during colonial times. Its cargo of fine silks, belts, cloaks and fabrics from Bombay washed up here. This beach is considered the best for swimming as there are very few waves. There is a very small fenced estuary which is home to several crocodiles. They have lived here for years and are well-fed by the local restaurants, although they are still wild creatures.
Barra de Potosí
This tiny fishing village hosts a lagoon area containing a large mangrove estuary. Birdwatching and kayaking are popular here. The lagoon opens to the ocean and the beaches contain many "enramadas" - palm-thatched shelters - decorated with colorful paper or plastic cutouts, especially during the Christmas season. They serve the freshest seafood and offer hammocks, perfect for taking a siesta during a long day at the beach. It is a very popular place with Mexican families especially on Sundays.
