About this house rental
This home is warm, inviting and very peaceful. Located on one acre it is in a dell surrounded by apple, pear, honeysuckle and spruce trees. It is a perfect back yard for croquet (which comes with the house!) an outdoor lobster fest on the picnic table and even a swing in the hammock. The house is 100 years old with many beautiful antiques and modern updates including the two bathrooms. The main bathroom downstairs features an air jet tub and the upstairs bathroom/laundry room leads onto a deck where a nighttime view of the rising moon is not to be missed. Lounge chairs are provided for that very purpose.
The house has 4 bedrooms: one with a queen size bed, two with double beds and one with two single beds - one of which is a Captains Bed built into the wall. Loads of fun for the kids to sleep and play in! (The other single bed is low to the ground and appropriate for a toddler. The living room has a beautiful Vermont Castings wood stove and wood is provided should you have a cool morning and need to warm up. Off the living room is a favorite space of many visitors: a small but beautiful "sun room" - formerly the old entrance to the house. It is great for a morning cup of tea and reading the paper. We also provide cards, backgammon and crokinole boards, scrabble and, for fun in the yard (along with the croquet) is a horseshoe set. Most recently, we have added a beautifully tuned piano!
The house is equipped with Fibre Op Wireless Internet (and Cable TV) and the kitchen contains everything you will need for big or small dinners. Dishes for at least twelve settings, glasses galore, a popcorn popper and all utensils you will need. Stove, fridge, microwave and dish washer are included as is a propane bbq and an outdoor fire pit complete with grate for charcoal bbq'ing.
Herring Cove is blessed with several lakes in the nearby vicinity - the closest for a morning dip is only a one minute walk down the lane and the stunning Look Off/Cliff Walk, so popular with Haligonians looking to get away from it all, is just a five minute stroll up the road. Also, only a ten minute walk away is the popular Pavia Cafe and Gallery.
Aside from the fresh water swimming, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking, cycling, kayaking, freshwater & deep sea fishing, whale watching, bird watching, sailing and even windsurfing. Only 20 minutes away is Halifax's most stunning beach - Crystal Crescent Provincial Beach & Park. The hikes around the Beach go on for miles with beautiful views.
This area, only a 20 minute drive from downtown Halifax, is also just around the corner from the National Historic Fort of York Redoubt and is a perfect base for you to explore the South Shore, the Annapolis Valley and the Eastern Shore.
I know you will love the house, love the area, love Halifax and the Province. Come and enjoy!

This house has a historic cottage feel with the sea a 10 minute walk away in 2 directions. Great backyard with toys, fireplace and bbq. Mary, the host was very responsive and accommodating. Our extended family had a great time here.

Our family of six plus our little dog enjoyed our cozy stay in this charming, welcoming little cottage. The deers came to greet us in the early morning and the ships whistled their horns well before the sunrise. Beautifully furnished and well equipped. Thank you for our lovely stay in your beautiful city of Herrings Cove.

Mary’s cottage house is incredibly cozy and clean and you will feel like you are home away from home. The place has been very thoughtfully stocked with everything you might need. It is rustic but clean and tidy. This cottage is an amazing place to stay and get the Nova Scotia experience. Mary was very kind and easy to communicate throughout. Highly recommend!

So welcoming! The cottage offered everything we needed. Beautiful yard with deer for neighbours. Not far from the ocean. We felt very welcome!

My brother, myself and our folks stayed for 8 days to participate in my son's wedding celebrations in Halifax. We were greeted by Adrienne and her warm hospitality, making us feel immediately at home. The home was comfortable, possessing all that we needed and more for our 8 day stay. We made use of the yard for cooling off under the shade of the trees. We were thrilled to see several deer including 2 fawns in the yard. We had easy access to Purcells Cove Rd., taking us quickly into the city as needed. My brother also used the bus to go into town one day. Both Mary and Adrienne were easily accessible if we had any questions. We had a family gathering at the property and all who visited had positive impressions of the property. We hope to return one day.
We have nothing but good things to say about this vacation experience.

This was a lovely cottage in a great location. It is probably the best and most thoughtfully equipped cottage we have ever stayed at. Although the weather was far from perfect, we felt relaxed and at home. The owner and property manager were a pleasure to deal with. The cottage was a short walk from one of our favorite coastal walks near Halifax - the Lookoff. The cottage was immaculate, the grounds were lovely. Really, it was perfect.

We spent a month at this property and it is now my favourite rental in NS (we’ve rented a few!). The location is amazing, around the corner from a pond (the dog could swim) and the Lookout on the ocean (we could watch the container ships leaving Halifax Harbour or listen to crashing waves during stormy weather). There were tons of trails in the area and a lovely beach, Crystal Cresent Beach, within an easy drive. The city of Halifax was maybe 15 minutes away so extremely easy access for city adventures. This rental was a fantastic base to explore NS …we put on 3000km doing just that, including an overnight to the Cabot Trail.
The yard was private, big enough to play ball with the dog and featured many visits by does with their fawns. The house itself was beyond charming, with lots of room and the best stocked rental I’ve ever been in! I still brought my Instant Pot, Air Fryer and Keurig but for a shorter stay I would have left them at home!
Mary and Adrianne were extremely accommodating during our stay and made sure we were comfortable. So thank you for a wonderful month!

Fell in love with the place
We fell in love with the place from the start. It is beautiful and welcoming. We were very well received by Andrienne. The house has an exceptional vibe and is very well located, a few kilometers from the beautiful beach of Crystal Cresent. The place is quiet and perfect for a family vacation. We will definitely return!
Thanks to Mary & Adrienne.

Lovely house close to downtown Halifax
Well stocked house with a lovely ambiance. Close to water as well as beautiful beaches and hikes. Excellent for families. My younger kids loved their bedrooms as well as the deer and wildlife in the backyard! Day trips to many beautiful places in Nova Scotia are a short drive away. Wonderful!

Third Time the Charm!
We have stayed in many vrbo’s over the years but this one is definitely our favorite. If any thing this time was even better then the previous two. Everything we could wish more in a charming old house near the Atlantic. The owner and her representative could not be more helpful or nice, Hope to come back!

Great stay!
This is a well maintained and updated older home with a lot of character. Plenty of space, and the wood stove brought back memories of my childhood.
We were able to work remotely, the wifi was solid.
Very nice yard, visited by a large bunny rabbit and several deer, likely attracted by the apple trees on the property.

Comfortable and Spacious for Family
Comfortable interior with lots of space to relax. The beds are super comfortable and have lots of options for sleeping arrangements. Nice for everyone to have their own space! Amenities in the area are somewhat limited but not out of reach. Would definitely stay here again! My family enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere.

A perfect property for a longer vacation
This property is exactly as presented on the Vrbo site. 4 bedrooms, comfortable family space, and a pretty well equipped kitchen (cake tins etc). It is also a nature lover’s delight: we were visited regularly by a doe and her 3 fawns as well as birds and rabbits! The location was perfect with equal distance to get to Halifax, Crystal Crescent beach and our relatives. Extra bonus: the full TSN sports package during the Olympics was fantastic. Liaison with the property manager was great - very responsive and solutions oriented.

Quiet, private getaway near Halifax
Charming older home on a very quiet road within easy drive to Halifax, but away from the bustle and lights of the city. Starry nights, a short walk to the Lookoff provincial reserve. We needed a place to stay until our home renovations were finished -- lots of space for a family of five. Thank you!

Herring cove was a wonderful place. But Mary made that even better for me and my family! We had little issues. But it was dealt with right away. But nothing to stop my family and I from having a good time. The house was clean and the beds were completely comfortable. We loved everything about the house and the area! It was definitely worth us driving the 3000km!Thank you Mary for a wonderful stay! Hope to be back sometime in the future :)

Charming Cottage and Great Location
We truly enjoyed our week at this great cottage. We loved how close it was to beautiful trails and the ocean. The little cafe up the road is great for coffee and breakfast. It's a close drive (25 minutes) into downtown Halifax where we spent three of our days. It's well outfitted and was a great stay for our family of five!

The real Nova Scotia Experience
My wife and I stayed here for almost 7 weeks and loved every minute of it. Being Maritimers ourselves, we really enjoyed the beautiful green surroundings, the rabbits and deer that walked past the living room window every couple of days, the nearby hiking trails on the rocky ocean shoreline and the peaceful community where this house is located. If you want to get a feel for what Nova Scotia is really like while staying close to all the action of Halifax, this is the best value in the area.

Wonderful and charming home...
Truly a home away from home. My two kids (ages 17 and 13) found the house absolutely delightful..and we wholeheartedly agree! The house is welcoming and full of charm, and we all had our own favourite spaces...The sunny reading nook for me; the balcony for my hubby; the backyard with the bright and colourful chairs for my daughter; and the comfy couch for my son. The outdoor space was fabulous--we saw a number of pheasants wandering about and witnessed a chipmunk turf war that made us smile. We were quite excited to be able to count the stars at night.
The location was idyllic- a short walk for beautiful scenery, a nearby spot for my daughter to try out fishing :) yet close enough for us to go into Halifax as well as explore Peggy's Cove among other sights.
Last but not least, I want to mention how welcoming Adrienne was and how awesome it was to be greeted with fresh flowers, yummy locally made bread and jam after a long long drive. The week has just flown by and felt way too short.
Thank you ever so much Mary, for being so responsive to our needs, and most of all, for allowing us the privilege of being in your home.

Beautiful property, quiet area
The property is very beautiful(almost like staying in my parents place when I was a child) and the little touches that were left for us made it very homey, fresh flowers ,strawberries and fresh bread were just what we needed after the long drive from Ontario. We had everything we needed as if we were home ( piano was a asset as my son plays the piano, big backyard for my grand children to run free) we will definitely stay here on our next trip to Nova Scotia ( Adrienne our host was amazing )

Beautiful House
We spent wonderful two weeks ins this beautiful house. As a family with little children we enjoyed the backyard! And the kids loved the unique bed in the children´s room. The location is quiet and the house well equiped. Lori, the housekeeper was very helpful and open to all questions we had. We really enjoyed the time and would highly recommend the house. Thanks a lot Mary!

Home away from home
A lovely, quaint getaway. Home had everything you could imagine to need. Litttle extras like elastic bands, cooking oils, clothes pegs and a cooler. Things you can't bring from home that are so nice to have.
We feel very comfortable. Have stayed two summers in a row. Owner and property manager cover everything!

Wonderful house in Herring Cove
It's the best stocked house we've ever seen and we have stayed in many V RBO's. Mary, Lori and Paula couldn't have been nicer. They responded immediately to any questions or concerns. Upon arrival, Lori gave us a loaf of delicious bread and jelly, as well as a Canadian wine that was like liquid candy. We didn't even know Canada made wine.
The backyard was perfect for the dogs to chase around in and had lovely flowers all around.
We could easily access Peggy's Cove, Lunenberg, Mahone Bay etc. Halifax is very close with lots to do.
We hated to leave but hope to return next year for a longer visit.

Fantastic little home tucked away in herring cove
This was an amazing little house that was the perfect transition while we were waiting to close on our new home in halifax. Everything was at our fingertips and it was an absolute pleasure to take our jack russell terrier on her morning walks to the lookout and watch the sunrise.
I can't recommend this lovely little home enough!

The perfect answer....
We had a family wedding in the area & needed space for guests & Mary's house was the perfect solution. It was welcoming & comfortable & had everything we could possibly need including a fire pit outside where the men smoked their cigars!
I would return in a minute!

Quaint, Quirky & Quiet
This home in Herring Cove was a delight for our family vacation (5 adults, 2 kids)! The home is large enough to accommodate a large group without everyone feeling "on top of each other".
It is beautifully decorated, and impeccably maintained. For a 100 year old home, it is certainly in great shape. Although it comes with its own quirks, we felt that only added to the character.
Excellent location (only 20min. from Halifax Harbour). Beautiful coastal drives everywhere you go!
Crystal Crescent beach is a wonderful place to spend a day, again only 20min. drive away.
We would definitely stay here again. It was truly our "home away from home" for 10 days, and we loved every minute!

Welcoming environment and peaceful getaway
The rental of this property came as an unexpected surprise. The photos of this home shows a lovely quaint home with a beautiful yard. What the photos do not convey is how truly peaceful and welcoming the home is. Immediately upon my arrival, I was warmly greeted by the property manager, Lori. Throughout my stay, I was struck by how quiet and peaceful the home and the neighborhood was. Great hiking trails, walks, etc. Although I was travelling alone for this trip, I am very much looking forward to booking this home again to accommodate my family. All of the bedrooms are comfortable and homey. Everything thing you need in a kitchen is there for cooking, etc. The home was clean and fully equipped with anything I required during my stay. Anyone with a family (teens/children) could be easily accommodated with this property. It is ideal. The yard is private and the area, generally, does not have heavy traffic. The grocery store (24 hrs) is about 10 minutes away by car - on the main road to and from the property. Super easy to get in and out of quickly. I highly recommend this property as a vacation locale. Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity.

Wonderful stay
This was our first time renting a private vacation home and we were a little apprehensive at first. I must say this experience has been the most positive and we can't wait to do it all over again. Mary was great from the beginning with her prompt responses and immediately made me feel at ease. We arrived to fresh bread and an informative tour of the house. This house has so much charm and character and it has everything that you would need on vacation. It even had a booster seat for our 10 month old daughter to eat on. The house was very clean and was located in a beautiful quaint neighborhood only 15-20 mins from downtown Halifax and is only a few minute walk from the ocean. There is a corner store just up the road that has great takeout as well if you're not feeling up to cooking. There was 4 adults and one baby and we all had plenty of room and space. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants some peace and privacy on vacation while only being a skip hop and jump away from the city. Thanks for the great stay.

Wonderful place feels like home
We stayed one week in this beautiful house and from arrival till the end we felt welcome, comfortable and like home. A lot of room, beautiful location and plenty of character. We actually tried to extend our stay but the house was booked... So I guess we have to come back... The location is great for exploring the maritimes, Halifax and surroundings... Really cool is fort York Redoubt an amazing unreal place and fort but you have to walk to the water's edge and explore the fort and bunkers.

Lovely, Cozy Home With Lots of Privacy
This home was perfect for our Nova Scotia stay. It's very comfortable and cozy and was very well stocked for all our needs. The homeowner thought of everything, and added a lot of lovely little touches that I've never seen in other homes I've rented. The backyard was lush and totally private, and it was great to be able to walk just a few minutes to get to spectacular views of the ocean.
Herring Cove itself is such a a picturesque little fishing village and we had the best fried scallops in the little take-out place just down the street.
Halifax is about a 20 minute drive away, and food shopping is fairly close. We'd definitely go back!
