About this cabin rental
NEW FOR 2023: Free Wi-fi now included. PROPERTY DESCRIPTION: An ideal location on the peaceful and beautiful Lake Hebron in the charming town of Monson. Enjoy easy access to nearby Moosehead or Sebec Lakes without the crowds and noise or extra cost. Located on the gorgeous and desirable Indian Point area of Lake Hebron, the historic Finch Camp is situated on two large lots - one with the cottage and an adjacent (catty corner) lot with the lovely and serene private lakeside area.
The two-story cottage was the first to be built on Lake Hebron more than 100 years ago, and has been updated to add modern comforts, including wi-fi and strong cell service, while still retaining its rustic charm. The cabin has peekaboo lake views through the trees and our neighboring camp and is just steps away from our dock on Lake Hebron. Our private dock area is located in a shaded grassy clearing nestled among the trees that is "catty corner" to our camp, with two Old Town kayaks and a 15 foot Old Town canoe that guests may use to explore the magical Lake Hebron. There are also plenty of lawn chairs, relaxing chaise lounges and a cedar picnic table as well as a stone fire pit at our dock area. The dock is perfect for swimming, fishing, or mooring your own watercraft.
Staying at the Finch Camp is a throwback to earlier times, with delicious fresh spring water provided via an antique hand-pumped well in front of the camp and clean running water from a deep well servicing the sinks and shower inside. It has a large country kitchen with a gas oven/stove. The large living room has an oversized fireplace and a nice heating system that does a great job warming the camp in the spring and fall. (We close up the camp in the winter.) We also keep an acoustic guitar at the camp and several sing-along song books, plus plenty of games and puzzles and DVD movies. The large wraparound porch includes a three burner propane BBQ grill and a relaxing screened area if the bugs come out.
It is a pleasant walk to the quaint town of Monson or the nearby Appalachian Trail access, and a short 13 mile ride to Moosehead Lake where you might spot a moose! There are many terrific activities in the area, including waterfalls, hiking trails, river rafting, guided moose safaris, u-pick berry farms, nearby lakes and streams, antique shops, and much more. Staying at Lake Hebron provides a nice and relaxing family lakeside experience without the crowds you'll find in Greenville, while still being just a stone's throw from Moosehead Lake so you can partake in the many outdoor activities in the area.
The ideal seasons to visit are late spring through mid-fall. Late spring is great for fishing and relaxing; summer is wonderful for swimming, hiking, fishing, kayaking, grilling, etc.; and early to mid-fall provides a quieter time to visit to soak in the stunning fall colors, crisp weather, and peaceful tranquility of the lake. Lake Hebron is known by locals to be one of the most beautiful and serene of the many Lakes in the area. Monson is a very friendly town, with several wonderful local restaurants and new art galleries.
Monson has long been recognized as a stopover for hikers on the final leg of the 2,180 mile Appalachian Trail -- it is the last stop before the famous (and grueling) 100 Mile Wilderness hike up Mount Katahdin to finish the trail. It is one of only 21 official Appalachian Trail Communities recognized by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy along the trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine.

Finch Camp is a perfect magical summer getaway. Whether you want a cozy romantic stay or to play like a kid at the lake. Great spot to swim, the water is gorgeous. Kayaking all day, even to dinner at the Lakeshore house. Riding bikes, campfires, and the stars were more than a girl from the Jersey Shore could handle.
One of the neighbors have a sign that says “Adults at Play” where one would normally see a “kids at play”sign. I think that is the perfect description for the time we had here.

We had a great time at our family get away to Monson, Maine. The camp was well equipped and quite spacious. The host was very responsive and friendly. For an off season camp visit we all had a fabulous time. I highly recommend this place!

Exactly the end of summer getaway that my family and I were looking for. My two teenage daughters loved the experience as they had never had the opportunity to stay at a camp before. The Finch camp was better than expected and had everything we needed. Great camp feel and Monson is a beautiful area. Thank you for sharing this place with us.

This camp was perfect for us. It had more than enough amenities for us to very comfortable. We all enjoyed time on the lake and around the campfire. The Monson General Store was close by and had a great selection. Conveniently located for countless day trips throughout the area.
We did not want to leave!!!

We had a great time at Finch Camp! Everything was as stated in the listing. The lake is beautiful and the loons made their presence known. Everyone in town was very friendly. Make sure to stop by the historical society on a Saturday for a tour of Monson's past.

We really enjoyed staying at the cabin and caught the leaf changes at their peak. The best color of our trip was in and immediately around your cabin in Monson. Loved the history of the camp and met several neighbors who were extremely friendly and helpful.

Had a lovely stay!
We had 8 total adults staying at the Finch camp to celebrate my cousin’s and my own milestone birthdays. I was worried about all of us sharing one bathroom but even for the 2.5 days that all 8 guests were present, it was fine! We also could fit four cars in the parking area on the side.
The mattresses on all the beds in the bedrooms were incredibly comfortable. Upstairs bedrooms naturally got quite warm from summer heat but the cabin had fans in every bedroom and ceiling fans in the living room to help.
Kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, etc. (We did our big grocery shopping in Dover Foxcroft and supplemented with trips to Monson’s General Store.)
We used the camp’s kayaks on Lake Hebron and went out three times, including with our own additional kayaks. The camp’s kayaks were built for tandem but we successfully used them as solo paddlers. One of my cousins enjoyed fishing off the dock with live bait from the local Irving’s. We also used the inflatable floats from the porch bin and also played the camp’s corn hole boards. We lived on the porch a lot during our stay just because it was so nice out there.
Owner was very responsive about a couple minor questions/issues that came up during the stay (e.g the caretaker ran some light bulbs over when we found we needed them.)

Ideal lake camp!
Finch Camp was a beautiful place to have a family gathering. It is a very quiet place save for the calls of loons and the occasional sound of rain dripping through the trees. The shore of Lake Hebron is just steps away and we enjoyed time sitting at the lake edge and time kayaking around the small islands in the center of the lake. The town center of Monson, with galleries, a small but well-curated general store, a welcoming pub, and antique stores, is an extremely short drive or a pleasant walk from the camp. The camp itself is warm and homey with a lot of pleasant touches and a sense of history integrated into modern comforts. I would happily stay here again.

Great Place
Nice camp with lots of room. Very quite and peaceful. Internet boost worked great. Fire pit in pictures make you believe it's right in front of the camp but is actually a little walk down the road to the lake. Overall it was a great getaway.

Restorative and peaceful fall getaway
We loved our stay at the Finch camp. David was proactive and very responsive in his communication, and the cabin itself was true to its description — rustic and charming with the kind of wear and tear that as visitors, we appreciated as markers of family stories and generations of memories. The weather was simply ideal — so much color to enjoy as the leaves were peaking, warm days on the water in the canoe, sunset kayaking, crisp morning runs and brunch on the porch. We brought groceries for meals, and the necessities were well stocked. In hindsight, there were plenty of places in Monson we would have enjoyed grabbing a bite to eat. The General Store is lovely, and it's really wonderful to see the life and energy on Main Street. There's so much to enjoy in the area, but we ended up really just slowing down and letting the days unfold slowly and naturally. For that reason, we didn't get the hiking in I'd originally planned to fit in during our stay, so we'll plan to return this gem!

An amazing location with many perks
We both loved our stay at Finch Camp. If you are looking to get away to the country this is a great choice. Kayak, canoe with private dock and great fishing. The fireplace is beautiful and the house is loaded with charm from generations past. I loved this northern Maine getaway.

Perfect long autumn weekend
We had a wonderful stay at the Finch Camp over the long holiday weekend. We lucked out with peak foliage, warm days and cool evenings. David was a great owner to work with. He provided us with a wealth of information.
My husband and I grew up going to camps in New England and our stay at the Finch Camp really brought us back to our childhoods. We loved the rustic charm, but loved the upgrades. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen well stocked which allowed us to spend a gloomy day inside cooking to our hearts content, and the updated tub/shower had great pressure. We loved the size of the house - it allowed us to spread out, but also be cozy together watching movies and enjoying the fireplace.
One day we hiked to Moxie Falls, then drove the scenic byway to Greenville where we explored and ate lunch. One evening we had dinner in Monson at the Lakeshore House which we all loved!
We were sad that time didn't allow us to use the canoe/kayaks, the firepit, or looking for moose. But that just means we will have to return!

Woodsy cottage
Nice "camp" cottage in woods with other homes around you, yet you feel like you are alone. Quiet, beautiful, on lake. Lovely home. Enjoyed staying there - centrally located to go many different ways or just stay there to enjoy the scenery and lake. Didn't have time to use canoe or kayak but enjoyed being there.

Awesome Place to Stay
The property is in a lakeside community and is just as it looks in the pictures. The owner is very responsive and helpful. The camp has a 1950's vibe and is welcoming and warm. The kitchen is super well equipped. The bedrooms are ample size and the beds are very comfortable. The camp is suitable for multiple generations. There are 2 bedrooms downstairs and one is right next to the bathroom. The lake is beautiful, calm and peaceful and we were able to take out the canoe right around sunset one day - spectacular. Loved sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch. The town center is small and much less frenetic than nearby Greenville. We hiked up Mt. Kineo in Rockwood - the views of Moosehead Lake were amazing.

A great quiet escape in Maine's north woods
The house is a great base for exploring the areas around Lake Hebron and Moosehead Lake. The adjacent lakefront lot with kayaks, a canoe and an outdoor fire pit make it extra special.

Great family vacation
The cobin was great, a trip back in time. Reminded me of childhood vacations.
Our family really loved the place, including two teens who are usually attached to the most modern conveniences. It was a beautiful spot on the lake and had everything we needed.
Can't wait to go back!

Cottage getaway
We had an awesome time at the Finch camp! Enough boats and lake for the whole family, total cottage charm and just what we were looking for. Also enjoyed the proximity of the AT for some hiking and several beautiful waterfalls not too far away. Monson general store supplemented the groceries that we brought with and gave us some WiFi when needed during our 4day stay. Would def recommend this rental if you are an appreciator of the cottage experience :)

Perfect lake retreat
Finch Camp feels like you’re going to your grandparents place at the lake. Everything is there that you need and nothing that you don’t (like perfect cell service that I didn’t want!)
The house is cozy and well stocked. The big bathroom and great hot shower was a nice surprise!
The lake is clear and clean and we loved sitting on the dock and canoeing around the lake.
Hope to come back next summer for 2 weeks.

Unique stay, awesome dock
We had the best time at this rental. Super spacious house. We loved going down to the dock each night and watching/listening to the loons. Owner gave lots of advice on how to spot a moose and we were able to see 4 during our trip! Awesome! Also, don't miss out on a seaplane ride over Moosehead Lake!

Classic Maine lake camp experience
Wonderfully authentic Maine camp, all the amenities one needs while being that step back to a more simple time. Very comfortable and relaxing. A good, quiet place to reconnect with family in front of the fireplace, around the table in the airy kitchen, or on the wrap around porch. Lovely camp.

Perfect weekend getaway!
My boyfriend and I felt that this home far exceeded our expectations and made for a very special first getaway for us. David really went out of his way to make the home feel extra clean and safe during the pandemic, and he was always quick to respond to any questions. My boyfriend and I both really enjoy nature photography and spending time outdoors, and we felt that this was a great location for us. Enjoying a beautiful sunrise canoe trip where were were completely engulfed in fog was really memorable and resulted in some beautiful photos! The kitchen had everything we needed to make stew and we really loved the fireplace as well. It is truly a special place and I would love to go back, and we thank David for sharing his beautiful home with us!

Amazing getaway to relax by lake
This is the third year in a row we have stayed at David's cabin on Lake Hebron. It is an amazing place to get away and explore the beauty of Maine. Plenty of activities to do on the lake and hiking on the AT and around Moosehead Lake is within a short drive. The house itself is very cozy, clean and charming. David has always been quick to respond to any requests or needs. Can't wait to come back again soon!

Maine camp experience
Excellent communication to/from the owner. Camp is easily accessible and good parking. The drive (from anywhere) to the camp is absolutely beautiful. The dock is great; nice and sturdy. Quiet road, very nice people. This is a true camp experience with comforts of home. We would stay here again.

Relaxing stay
The camp was very nice and clean. Plenty of room. We assumed that the camp was directly on the lake. It is just a short walk to the dock but there is no view of the lake from the camp as there is another camp directly in front of you. We had a very relaxing stay though and was able to catch some fish.

I’d stay again
My family and I had a great stay at David’s lake house. The home was very roomy, with spacious rooms and comfortable beds. The home was heated when we arrived (we stayed in October do the nights were cool). David was great to work with. We’d stay again.

Unmatched beauty and tranquility!
Another FANTASTIC stay at the Finch cabin! This was our second stay at the cabin on Lake Hebron and it was a wonderful as the first time. It is a rustic cabin that reminds me of our family bungalow I used to visit as a child. I even had the pleasure of meeting one of the several 4th generation residents who recited tales from the last 60 years as clear as they were yesterday. The morning canoe trips on the lake offer splendid views of the fall colors.
There is plenty to do in the local area. The town of Monson is making great strides to improve the community. The new business and artisans are all very friendly and inviting. The nearby town of Greenville has much to offer as well. There are numerous trails in the area including several waterfalls and a crash site of a B52 which still has the aircraft debris.
David, the cabin owner, is a pleasure to work with. He responds quickly to inquiries and ensured our stay was enjoyable. He promptly saw to any issue we encountered.
Finch Cabin offers a quite getaway on a majestic lake that is simply unforgettable.

Repeat Visitor for Good Reason
This was our third year staying at Finch Camp and it's beginning to feel a lot like home. You'll want for nothing at this camp: the kitchen is well equipped and there's plenty of books and games to keep everyone occupied on rainy days. New this year was a well tuned guitar -- wish we knew how to play! The lake is great for a quiet paddle where it's easy to feel like you're the only soul on earth - just you and the loons. Plenty of options for hiking are within the area - easy, moderate and difficult. As a side note, it has been interesting to watch Monson transform in the few years since the Libra Foundation infused millions into the town in the hopes of revitalizing the economy by establishing an artist colony. A visit to the Monson Historical Society (above the Appalachian Trail Visitor Center) is recommended.

This was a nice size cottage that almost takes you back in time! It was a great time visiting with family.

Quiet and amazing lake getaway
We have been back to Dave's camp in Monson twice now, and plan to keep coming back. The cabin is everything you could ask for a quiet, relaxing getaway on a beautiful lake. Great hiking close by. Hope to stay again next summer!

Great location to escape the rat race
This is our second time renting this lakefront home. A lot of improvements have been made to make our stay more enjoyable since our last stay. Location is a short trip to Moosehead Lake and not too far from Bar Harbor to enjoy a authentic Maine Lobster boil. My favorite was Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound. Sat down by the lake made a fire in the pit and just enjoyed the company talking on how peaceful it is. Will definitely return.

Lake Hebron Cottage
My family ( siblings and a few cousins) thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay in Monson, Maine. Growing up, we spent a lot of time at our grandparents house in Monson ( the former big slate house on Tenney Hill). It was wonderful to reminisce in a town that has so many memories for us. And thanks to this large cottage, we get to make new memories. We didn’t let a rainy Saturday dampen our spirits! We still went to the lake, toured waterfalls, walked around downtown, spent time at the Monson Museum and paid our respects to relatives at the cemetery. It was our third time renting this special cottage, the last time being in 2015. We noticed the great updates and found everything to be just perfect! We enjoyed every minute! Thank you David, for sharing your place with others. It was nice to just unplug for the weekend and take in all of the sights of beautiful and peaceful surroundings. It most certainly is a little slice of heaven. We look forward to renting it again next September! Thanks again!

Excellent response rate from owner
It was great to get away from it all - the only issue we had was we thought we were able to look out on the water sitting on the porch -and thought there was a beach area. My son had fun fishing but there wasn't anything really to catch - my misunderstanding. One of the cutest cottages on that side of lake.
