Perfect spot to unwind!

The staff are exceptional here, super friendly. I stayed in a hut which was perfect, really comfortable bed and clean. There’s an evening meal which is great for meeting people but there’s also a kitchen to cook in if you wish. Again super clean and everything you need. They organise plenty of excursions, my only regret only staying for 2 nights!

If you want a true Coffee Bay experience, Coffee Shack is definitely the place to go! Extra shout out to the great staff!! Hope to visit them again soon.

Very good

Really well run backpackers with bar, tasty and affordable food and daily activities. Employs local staff who are all great and clearly does a lot for the local community.

The daily shuttle didn't run on the day we needed it so we nearly lost money on a bus and hotel booking. Having to cross a river to get from the rooms to the restaurant/ reception is very inconvenient, especially at high tide (knee deep) or at night. It's also a public area so you do have sellers and potential safety concerns. WiFi keeps logging out and you have to log back into it.

Trip to coffee bay worth it

Great that the host fetched us from mthatha.The food was lovely and affordable. The accommodation comfortable. Lots of activities to do. Loved that it is right on the beach. The hikes were amazing. The hike guards are really patient.

Wonderful backpackers

Lovely backpackers, the staff were very sweet and helpful. The hostel area was clean and taken care of. Very tasty and affordable food. We stayed on the other side of the river which made it more difficult to get to the main area ( especially at night) because of the tide but just remember a torch and to walk carefully. During and after big thunderstorms there was no electricity or network for quite a while, so make sure to have everything charged.

There are quite a few locals outside the property that bother you selling beads and weed. When you say no they get more persistent and this can be overwhelming.

Road to get there is very bad. I would recommend people to stay at least two nights if they go, because of the bad road.

Unique place in dreamy coffee bay

Special place in beautiful coffee bay. It offers a shuttle service to pick up at mthatha . great bar and restaurant, lovely common outdoor chill area, cute rondavel hut dorms. clean showers. free dinner on sundays and organize trips and hikes! work together with locals from the villages around. recommend 100%

dorm beds are a bit unstable (moves when you move). it got very hot in the dorms since there is no AC, only a fan and small windows. I was there in february which is a very humid month, maybe it's different when it's less humid. I still enjoyed it very much!

Very good

The day we arrived the bridge to the village was washed away by the river so we couldn't reach the place. But the staff was really helpful and picked us up. Cool spot, nice surroundings and very friendly vibes. Would definitely go again.

Great tours and food, but accommodation to be improved

The location is well next to the sea. Absolutely perfect was the food served there. The organized tours are great. Hiking, surfing, culture. Take the opportunity and use this tours

The Rondavel was not really clean. Even if it is only a backpackers accommodation the comfort was low in the rooms.

A wonderful hub for any traveller looking to explore, hangout and meet new people.

I loved it! Such a great place to hang and meet people. The rooms are outstanding. Felt very comfortable. The food is amazing. And the staff members were so helpful.

I noticed the female owner (B.) speaking a little rudely to her staff members on multiple occasions. This was also noticed by my friend and was uncomfortable to witness.

A must place to stay at coffee bay! Staff were extremely helpful during our stay. Hotel organises daily trips to sign up for which were fantastic, loved everything about our stay.

The roads on the way to the hotel are absolutely awful, something to be aware of.

We got accomodation in a Rondavel. Never slept so good. Car parking was safe in a secured aerea with 24 hours security. Staff took care about taking our shoes in during the night. Food is good and you get value for money. Nice backpacker atmosphere. Breathtaking sandy beach and scenery.

The paved road from Mthata is full of potholes and it takes time to reach Coffee Bay. A lot of plastic at the river mouth coming from the other side of the river where many locals are enjoing their barbecue. Begging heavily by the locals is an unpleasant issue as a result of the general poverty in the region. Listen to the advices from the Backpacker staff to handle the situation the right way.

The staff was really nice.

The road to get there is pretty bad, which is not the hostels fault, just be aware of that. The huts for a 2bed private room are on the other side of the river which wasn't mentioned and it gets extremely cold at night.

Best Backpacker in the World!

The spirit of the staff. The thoughtfulness and caringness of the staff. Detailed information board Experienced and insightful tour guide (Lucky Akhona). The tour guide was patient with slow hikers on the 3 hours hike to The Hole in The Wall. The food (breakfast and dinner) was delicious and very affordable. The wifi was very good however it's not available throughout the property. Friendly staff from the front desk, maintenance staff, security, shuttle driver, actually everyone who works at the Backpacker was friendly and approachable. If you book you book for 4 nights you get the 5th night FREE. The backpacker is situated in the beautiful village of Coffee Bay with friendly locals. This is the best backpacker we've stayed at so far and we highly recommend it.

On the information board a tour to a "witch doctor" is mentioned. There is nothing called a "witch doctor" in our cultures. It's either a traditional doctor, traditional healer, a healer or igqira. Please change that 🙏🏿

Vibey, fun and fantastic!

Very friendly staff, and the evening meals were amazing and fantastic value for money!

The roads there are pretty hectic, we made it in a normal car but long sections where the potholes are really bad!
