The food was excellent, both in flavors and presentation. The young owner is truly a master of cuisine. The compound is unique and charming with pathways through a lovely garden. The bath was large, hot and relaxing.
The futons were somewhat thin but we probably could’ve asked for extra. The down comforters and hot water bottles made sleep cozy!

Everything! Attention to you as a guest, quality of facilities. Perfect experience.

A wonderful experience: the view from the camera and the onsen seems to a paint; the room service was accurate, detailed and awesome. The nicest staff I've ever seen (we annoyed the staff with a lot of requests and they satisfied all of them). I think is one of the best place not only for starting or ending the Nakasendo way but also just for resting your body and mind.
Nulla.

If you are looking for the traditional feel when travelling to Japan then this is the place to stay, From the minute we arrived masaya and the staff at nagataki were very helpful and friendly organising transport for us to local attractions and helping us with our luggage very exceptional service, the meals provided are also traditional and very good quality, thankyou masaya and team for the wonderful stay.
We liked everything about the property.

Amazing historical place, a unique experience. The food was prepared with care and was excellent!
It was perfect!

From the beginning till the end, it was an amazing experience ! The host and his family are wonderful people. We slept in a house that has been standing for over 200 years, bathing in history and quietness. We've been served exquisite dishes by the host, whose cooking skills are tremendous. We strongly recommend this ryokan for a unique experience.
Everything was perfect !

What an incredible experience. Staying at NAGATAKI is like stepping into a living museum. Our thatched roof cottage was almost 400 years old but had AC and WiFi. The rooms are comfortable and it’s identical to staying here in the 1700s except for the modern conveniences. The owner Masaya was an excellent host and made sure everything was perfect. His cooking skills were excellent and both the dinner and breakfast were delicious. They have single gender onsen which I had to myself and which looks out over the beautiful forest.
If you’re hiking Nakasendo they have a shuttle to take you to Magome to start your hike.
This is a place to come and immerse yourself in Edo Period Japan.
Western people might not be used to the pillows but that’s minor.

We had a wonderful experience staying in a charming, centuries-old house surrounded by beautiful nature. The location was excellent, and the meals were delicious, with so many different flavors. We really appreciated the convenience of being picked up from the station (Nakatsugawa) and dropped off in Magome to start the Nakaseno trail. The staff was super kind and also provided us with maps, and welcome tea. I definitely recommend the experience!

Beautiful surroundings and building. We were extremely impressed with the food and the kindness of the staff.

My stay at Nagataki was phenomenal! The location of the hotel is truly beautiful. The staff was extremely courteous and accommodating. As we didn't have a car, they helped pick us up and get to our excursions. The food is amazing -- truly delicious dinner and breakfast which was among the best food we had during our whole trip. We are so glad we stayed here during our trip in Japan.

A lovely traditional stay ! they were so accomodating - service was amazing including picking us and and dropping us off at the train station to and from our stay and taking us to different tourist attractions.

This place was a hallmark of Japanese hospitality! The host Masaya-san was quick to respond to any questions I had over text, and scheduled a driver to pick me up from the station when I arrived, and dropped me off at Magome for my hike the next day. He was extremely thoughtful in ensuring the logistics of my trip were fully taken care of, and at no point was I left feeling lost. He also prepared dinner and breakfast which were diverse in local seasonal ingredients and absolutely delicious! Not to mention the compound and house itself is full of history and charm! Will definitely stay here again if I return to the Kiso valley.
None, everything was great!

The place was so pretty and full of character with thatched cottages which are a few hundred years old. We stayed in a cottage of our own and had the whole onsen to our own family (as occupancy was low then). The garden was beautiful. The food served was amazing (cooked by the owner himself! It is fine cuisine, equivalent to what you get in fine Japanese restaurants and even my family with their hugh appetites, was so full, satiated and happy after the meal.
The service was very commendable as well. The owner/cook speaks English and very helpful with recommending where to sightsee. We were picked up at the train station upon arrival. The next morning we were given a lift (for free) to The Naegi castle ruins and our luggage were even sent to our next destination at Magome for free. We were so grateful!
Certainly hope to stay here again in Autumn when the garden will be stunning!
The toilet was cold. Other than that nothing else.

A wonderful historical ryokan, with a very private setting, extremely friendly owners/managers.
The rooms are incredibly authentic. Food was excellent and served in a beautiful setting.

The age and history of the 400 year old motherhouse made you feel like you were stepping back in time. Masayasan was an amazing host. He arranged for our luggage to be collected and returned to the rail station so we could walk the nakasendo on both days. The breakfast and dinner was truly Devine and all hand prepared with the upmost care and pride by Masayasan. The property reception was memorable as we were ushered through a beautiful garden to a tea reception prepared on the irori and served at our kotatsu and heated blanket. was easily the most memorable Ryokan stay on our 6 week tour of Japan and a property I must return to one day.
Having to leave after one day

We picked Nagataki based on the stellar reviews and they were all correct, what a wonderful family run ryokan. The hospitality was fantastic, they were truly welcoming, kind and thoughtful and the food was excellent. Meals were seasonal with persimmon, chestnut and mushrooms among so many other delicacies - truly delicious.

loved loved the family run ryokan. the young man there was excited to make sure we were comfortable showing us our little house we were staying. Dinner and breakfast was delicious he nicely explained the food being served. beautiful gardens. he made suggestions on where to stop on our road trip. wonderful suggestions too
we enjoyed everything

Everything about Nagataki was exceptional. The wonderful host, Masaya made the most delicious 7 course meal for us. I've not tasted anything so outstanding. The grounds are sublime, I could have lost myself here for a week. This is a definite visit if you can. I will be back

Our group of six were awed by the fact that the three houses we stayed in were about 100 to 400 years old! Our houses had beautiful garden views which we could soak in from our patios. Dinner and breakfast were superb, with subtle flavors and fine details. The meals were a riot of colour and a feast for the eyes as well.
From the time we were picked up from Nakatsugawa station till the next morning when we were dropped off at Magome-juku, we received nothing but warm and hospital service from this small family-run property.

The pictures do not do this place justice! The ryokan is perched high on a hill near Nakastugawa Station. Each of the beautiful, traditional, Japanese homes are very separated and private, set in a gorgeous garden of Japanese maple trees. There are only a few homes so the stay was very quiet and relaxing, we did not see the other guests at all.
There are two bath houses. One has beautiful glass windows with views of the surrounding trees. You can book the bath house private use and have it all to yourself. There was only one other guest when we were there so it was very easy to get the bath house.
It dinner exceeded all expectations! Come with an empty stomach. There were at least 8 courses, cooked with local, seasonal ingredients. Breakfast was just as delicious. You can tell it was made with care and love. They explained every dish to us. We appreciated that they were trying their best in English and we had no problems with communication.
This was the perfect way to end our hike on the Nakesendo trail. They picked us up from the station and dropped us off. We would definitely come back recommend this ryokan to all our friends and family.

We loved everything at Nagataki. It’s by far the nicest ryokan we ever stayed in and the staff was amazing, not to mention the food! The whole experience was exquisite and we can’t wait to go back
There was nothing we didn’t like

The food, the hospitality and the experience of staying in a 400year old house
A bit cold in winter

The food was absolutely delicious, cooked by a chef with ten years experience. It was served in our room. The setting was divine: a small two hundred year old house, set a Japanese garden. The Onsen was perfect for two people (we were the only guests staying that night). We were given free transport to & from Magome. Thank you Masaya.
