TRY THESE TOP 5 SPOTS TO TAKE A HIKE!
“Take a hike!” is not a very nice thing to say in most circumstances, but where we come from it’s actually terrific advice. With all of the scenic beauty and natural wonders in every direction, Lake County has plenty of places to stretch your legs, and your imagination.
How much? Well, not to brag, but Lake County boasts more than 600,000 acres of public land and 100-plus miles of hiking trails—and pardon the pun, but each one is Clearly Different from the other. You’ll experience some of California’s most stunning landscapes in Lake County, with a variety of views ranging from mountain vistas to endless vines, from open valleys to freshwater shorelines.
Now, you could try to traverse all 100-plus miles of hiking trails and while we’d certainly be impressed, we think there’s an easier way. Sure, we’re personally partial to all of our trails (and believe each one is worth a visit), but to make it easy on you we’ve gathered the top five spots that trekkers and locals alike say you have to check out. Remember to pack your hiking boots, because you’re going to need them!
Mount Konocti
You know your trail is pretty good when it’s literally the stuff of legend. Mt. Konocti is a 10,000-year old volcano and the site of Lake County’s largest park. While you can see Mt. Konocti from pretty much anywhere in Lake County, you’ll get the best views along the Wright Peak Summit trail. There’s walnut and apple orchards, the amazing Canyon Oak grove, the 117-year old Mary Downen cabin, and even the remains of a small plane which crashed tragically in 1962. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, there’s also access routes for side trips to Buckingham Peak and Howard Peak.
Difficulty: The Wright Peak trail can be kinda strenuous. You’ll gain 1,649-ft. elevation from the trailhead until the Wright Peak summit at 4,299-ft. elevation. It is more than 3 miles (about 3-5 hours, give or take), and there are very steep areas. Food, water, and rest are your friends.
Highland Springs
Hop on a horse, or use your own two feet, whatever your preferred means of transportation, you’ll feel like a cowboy moseying along the 3,200-acre watershed of Highland Springs. While hikers and equestrians have officially enjoyed the area for more than 50 years, the trails were first developed by hunters on horseback more than 130 years ago. Highland Springs still features the same unspoiled, rugged landscape it has for thousands of years, so it’s an absolute must for hiking and horseback riding.
Difficulty: Mostly open range, but there are some steep hillsides here and there. The views are 100% worth it.
Anderson Marsh
Hike through 1,065 acres of natural wonders and thousands of years of California history in the Anderson Marsh state historic park. With a nature reserve preserving a tule march, archaeological sites of the Pomo people, and ranch structures built by Lake County’s early Anglo settlers, Anderson Marsh is like visiting several sites in one. Pack your binoculars too, because Anderson March is also bird lover’s bliss, with 151 species of migratory and resident birds.
Difficulty: The two most popular trails (Cache Creek and McVicar Trail) are easy-peasy. Just make sure you have water. You know the drill.
Middle Creek Nature Area
Ever seen a great blue heron gulp down a bullfrog? Welp, you’re liable to when you hike the Middle Creek Nature Area, which is pretty much like visiting a National Geographic special. Birdwatchers travel from all over the world (even farther than the birds) to visit this major waterfowl migratory route, which is home to several osprey nests and great blue heron rookeries. We must say, these birds have great taste.
Difficulty: Piece of cake, though be sure to pack supplies for a 1-3 hour round trip.
Mendocino National Forest
Mendocino National Forest should be on any National Park fan’s bucket list, and half of its 450,000 acres is in Lake County. All of Mendocino is wonderful, but we’re mighty proud (and very blessed) with the parts of the forest we got. The top spot, literally and figuratively, is the 37,679-acre Snow Mountain Wilderness, which backpackers and horseback riders love for its numerous creeks and landscape covered with chaparral, grasslands, oak woodlands, and deep forests. Although access is remote, you will be rewarded with forty miles of hiking trails in the wilderness area, and you can’t go wrong with any of them. The Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument is also a must-see, and while seeing its entire 330,780 acres is a bit ambitious, a portion extends into the Lake County area.
Difficulty: Not too bad, just be sure to bring plenty of snacks and water.
Picking the best places to hike in Lake County is like finding the best tree in Mendocino National Forest—they’re all pretty great. When you get right down to it, the best recommendation is your own. So plan your next trekking adventure to Lake County and we’ll see ya when ya get here.
P.S.S. Stay safe and be sure to check conditions before heading out for your hike.

Dale was super responsive and quick response back to our needs. His house was so spacious and clean. Our families enjoyed the backyard the most it was so beautiful with the jacuzzi, kayak for adults to use and space for children to run and play. Kitchen was plenty of utensils and cooking pot and pans for us to use. We will definitely come back for our next weekend trip. Thank you Dale for hosting us in your beautiful home.

Awesome place I stayed at with my friends and family for my birthday. Dale, was an awesome host very responsive and accommodating during our stay. We enjoyed the ping pong table, fishing off the dock and relaxing in the hot tub. Would definitely recommend 👍!

Our stay was great as the home provided plenty of space for many people to comfortably sleep. Being right on the lake made our fishing excursion easy and we didn’t have to travel far. The home is beautiful and cozy. We would definitely come back and stay here again

Great size house for our group for Thanksgiving. Everyone enjoyed the toys kayaks, ping pong and dock fishing. The sunsets brought everyone together to watch it's magic. The birds were very entertaining, there were egrets and blue cranes everyday. Cooking in the kitchen for us ladies was great. Plenty of room and supplies. The guys bonded and enjoyed the golf course near by. A really memorable stay for all. Thanks Dale.

This place totally met our needs. We were looking for a place with a hot tub and a great view between Napa wine drinking and redwood forests up north. We dominated each scene from this house!

We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay! Everything was really nice and clean, the view of the lake as soon as you walked through the breezeway was beautiful, the hot tub was working properly, and there was enough space just in the house to spread out. We would definitely stay again!

Great home for a few families
We had three families (11 people) together for the 4th of July. All 5 kids had a blast in the lake - we were able to launch our SUPs right from the dock. Dale also had a kayak that we used so we could all get on the water. Dinner outside during sunset was great. There's a Fosters Freeze right across the street (great for kids) as well as a European market (very friendly and good food).
There was plenty of room for everyone the central kitchen made for a great gathering place. Dale was very responsive by text whenever we needed anything. I would recommend Dale's place!

making memories and so much more
Hands down the best decision of the year!! Stress free every minute, 8 children and in 2 days never once heard the words, "I'm bored". 7 adults and we all congregated comfortably in every area of this spacious home. I kayaked for the first time as did my daughter and her friend, an experience we credit to the 2 kayaks furnished by Dale. So much more than meets the eye with the many toys, life vests, ping pong table, water skis, and of course the jacuzzi which was immaculate, just as clean as the home.. Dale hit the jackpot with his cleaning crew. Dale treated us as family and reached out to insure we were comfortable, how could we not be in this warm and welcoming home away from home? Absolutely coming back! Thanks Dale!!

Fantastic Group Event House
This house offered a multitude of common areas for hanging out as well as some private areas to retreat to if you need a break. We housed nine six-foot men for three days and two nights comfortably. The backyard area was great for bocce ball, washers, and ping pong. The BBQ worked well, and kitchen area was ample in size and utility. This is a fantastic venue for a friends excursion. I only wish that the lake had more water so we could take advantage of the kayaks. Dale was very responsive and took quickly addressed our needs before and during our stay. I highly recommend this property.

Perfect Family Getaway
If you have a big family like we do (14) this is the place to be! The location is PERFECT! The accommodations in our opinion are PERFECT! Kitchen has everything you need! Including the BBQ which included the propane provided by the owner! We had plenty of comfortable sleeping space for everyone. We used the ping pong table the entire time & kayaks up until the morning we left! We fished off the dock & caught catfish and a bass everyday all day. The hot tub was awesome under the stars. Our family had the BEST time here and we can’t wait to come
back!!! Dale is awesome!

A house on the lake for my wife and a fisherman
A fisherman dream, well fit for the entire family able to bring multiple couples. House well clean. Walking distance meat market, gas stations and eateries.

Not what I expected.
Overall the house itself was nice. The reason we booked the house was so we could fish and swim in the lake. Unfortunately april and may bring rice flies by the thousands. They are a total distraction. The water was gross to say the least. Around 2pm the green soupy algae starts layering the shore and surround docks. We didn’t get near the water. The level of the lake is very very low. We fished in the dock and catching fish was the highlight of the trip.
The one benefit was we were able to bond as a family and play ping pong and sit in hot tub.
I have to admit this property is also very overpriced for what you are getting.

fantastic
Dale is a wonderful host, very active in communication. House was spotless upon check in. Plenty of space to relax inside & even out on the dock/backyard. Air is nice & fresh. Nice place to visit for calm weekend. House has 6+ couches, 3 regular rooms and 1 master , numerous places to sleep. Dining space is huge, even outside has a couple tables. Jacuzzi is very well maintained, hop right in! Pictures do not do justice must come see this place in person!

Great location and host. The property is well designed and has a great flow. Perfect location for fishing, kayaking, or just relaxing and enjoying the sunrise and sunsets by the water.

My friends and I rented this property in mid Sep hoping to scape CA fire, have a relaxing time at this lake front property and do water activities at the lake. Well we were so DISAPPOINTED for sure. We couldn't use the outside and all the amenities of the house such as hot tub because of a horrible mosquito situation day and night. The owner had bug spray in the garage that we had to use tremendously to be able to bbq and eat. We didn't expect this and it was not pleasant at all. The neighbors had several Dyna Zapper's outside which I believe it would help a lot if this owner had them and placed them inside and outside. Also, the Lake is way too wavy and not a good place for swimming or kayaking. We had to pay extra for a day pass to go to another lake and do water activities there, even though our rental was right at the water. Downstairs only have one small AC which is located in kitchen cabinet and does not cool down the whole place. The living room is too dark and the lamps don't work. The upstairs shared bathroom had a problem with the handle and people could get stuck in there. All bedrooms except master bedroom has the horrible sound of the main road and kept all of us awake at night. There was no sign of Ping-Pong table and the owner didn't mention that at all. The foosball table is located in the garage with a very musty odor. We were not able to use that either. The kitchen is nice and updated but it is missing some essential items. The pots and pans are old and are peeling Teflon and the condition of those are not adequate for such an expensive place. Overall not a good experience and I won't suggest this property to other guests. I wish the owner was more honest with us and would warn us about the lake and the mosquito situation.

Lucerne Home Sweet Home
We loved our stay at this beautiful property. The house is updated and the owners have clearly put love and care into the place, giving it a homey, clean, and cabin feel.
The views in general are gorgeous and from the upstairs balcony at any time of day or night, they are stunning! (We viewed full moonlight dancing off the lake some nights from the upstairs master.)
There is plenty of space and there are also plenty of cozy nooks and crannies for smaller group conversations and interactions.
The owner makes kayaks available to guests. We thoroughly enjoyed these and experienced the calm beauty of the lake from an entirely different perspective.
Dale was an extremely responsive and communicative host. He promptly addressed any questions we had.
I highly recommend this home. Thank you, Dale!

5-star price for motel accommodations
It is a four bedroom not 5 bedroom, only 3 of the bedrooms have a fan and A/C. The master bedroom needs blinds. One of the couch sleepers is broken and unusable. It is beautifully located but the rate is excessive for the accommodations. For the price per night, we expected a higher caliber of accommodations. The owner charged us for a dog after the fact and there was no advance notice of the fee.

Fun weekend at lakefront vacation home
We had a fantastic weekend at this property.
The facility was clean, well maintained and had almost everything we needed for the weekend getaway. Although the house was suitable for four couples to stay comfortably, all eight couples in our party had no complaints. We liked the house, backyard, the lake and the surroundings. We had backyard barbecue and an indoor karaoke party on Friday night. All of us had a blast! On Saturday morning we hiked nearby hills to enjoy great views on the Clear Lake. An outing to a nearby casino was fun, too.

Very nice stay with friends
We were 10 friends staying in this very nice house. The lake access is awesome, we enjoyed the sunset from the hot tub, played spike ball, used the kayaks and ate lunch outside!

Relaxing retreat
A group of friends went up to Dale's house to have a reunion, celebrate a birthday and enjoy New Years. The second we showed up we felt relaxed and peaceful on the water. The sunsets were some of the most beautiful ones we've ever seen, and and everyone was extremely comfortable in the house.

Nice place on the Lake
First, it was very easy to contact the owner, that was perfect for organization.
What we like :
-the perfect location on the lake, 2 kayaks from the house, we use our paddle boards to explore the lake
-the boat ramp where we spent some time under the sun and at night
-the house is well equipped with all what you need to be confortable
-the ping pong table, the BBQ and the hot tub
-easy access to the water
-all decks were great
What is unlikely :
-it says 17 persons, it is 8 on beds & 9 on sofa beds. The house is great for 10 people in my opinion
-the direct access to the highway 20, noisy in 2 rooms
-the master bedroom is huge, comfy with nice view on the lake but if you like the dark at night to sleep, there is no blinds
-It was very pricy for Thanksgiving but I guess owner charge obviously more at that time, that's the market rule I guess
Conclusion : Nice house with amazing access on the lake, clean but pricy for what it is.

very nice and relaxing place to stay
We really enjoyed our stay in Lucerne. The house is located close to restaurants and shopping yet feels very private once you are in the house or back yard. There is a lot of room inside with 3 different living room areas and a nice kitchen. The upstairs Master is very nice with lots of room and it's own deck. We would definitely stay in this house again.

Property clean & beautiful as pictured!
We highly recommend this home for a large group. Dale's place was perfect for our family reunion. We had 13 people and plenty of space for everyone. The house is well kept and the kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. Dale's beautiful photography adds the perfect touch to the walls. He was readily available by phone to answer any questions we had.The back yard facing the lake was a favorite place for us. Fantastic views and evening ping-pong tournaments coupled with a hot tub and large grill made each night a little slice of paradise. Having 2 kayaks and a large tube at our fingertips enabled folks to paddle around and enjoy the lake also. The Disney Family Boat Rentals is just down the road and we rented a pontoon boat and 2 jet skis for another great day of fun on the water. Ice cream every night from the little place across the street was a real treat too. This lakefront home could not have been better for our large gang. Thanks Dale!

Wonderful Vacation Home--The BEST View & Setting...so fun on the Lake!
We held our family reunion with 3 families staying in the house with infants to 80 year olds and it was great! So much space. Beautiful views of the lake. Kitchen area was perfect facing the water and all brand new. Inside there are two floors with many bedrooms...balconies facing the lake and again lots of windows. There was plenty of outdoor space with tables and many places to visit and rest. Dock in top shape also places to hang out. Kayaks, water ski vests, ropes, ping pong table--everything you need for fun and a hot tub too. Would highly recommend and we have been coming to Clear Lake for over 50 years. Did I mention you are right across the street from the Foster Freeze to get dipped cones? We are coming back every year--Dale the owner is easy to work with and very kind. He knows our cousin that lives a few doors down and you will be glad you booked.
