proximity to jigokudani koen. Hot spring was nice
We ordered Japanese vegetarian dinner and breakfast. Didn’t like it Wasn’t much we could eat. Rooms were old and tired. Futons were rather hard

The food(kaiseki) was the best we’ve tried on this holiday. The hotel was clean and posh, as befitting a hotel of this quality
Somehow some of the staff were simply incompetent. We arranged for transport from Yudanaka station 1h before arriving. A Japanese speaker spoke to them to arrange. And they manage to forget to pick us up. We were stranded at the hotel station. When checking out, the hotel gave us the wrong timing for the buses that can pick us at the bus stop nearby. We missed the bus because the hotel had the wrong schedule. So we missed another bus again.

The hotel seems a bit dated, but it more than makes up with old school charm. A lot of effort was put into creating an exquisite experience showcasing Japanese food and culture. The special care put into preparing the rooms, onsen and even the manicured gardens will draw you to stay longer at such a welcoming hotel.it is no wonder the current Emperor and Empress of Japan have stayed there a few times!
A bonus that the hotel is located about a 5min walk to the start of the snow monkey park!
Thank you for your kind hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and had fun wearing the specially prepared yutakas to walk around the hotel.
Not enough time yo enjoy the hotel and its facilities.

Absolutely beautiful place to stay, so close to snow monkeys

This is a traditional Japanese hotel. The rooms are set up with no bed and they make up a Japanese style bed for you ar night. You can book a private onsen and it is a 5 minute walk to the snow monkeys. The breakfast was wonderful. We paid for the dinner and would highly recommend it.
Be prepared for sleeping on the floor. We used extra padding and comforters as it was not what we are used to coming from North America.

While still traditional, it was a larger hotel so more modern. It was possible to arrange a private onsen, but booking was required. The staff very very kind and helpful. The food was authentic and well prepared. It was a walking distance to monkey first and other onsens and springs. The drinking water served at the hotel was from a spring.

Staffs are friendly and helpful. The dinner and breakfast are delicious. The room and onsen are both very good. Easy walk to the Snow Monkey Park. We went there in the morning but didn't see the monkey. It was foggy after the rain and we were told that the monkey couldn't find the way down from the mountain. If you have time there then you can check their live video before you go.
We arrived around 10:30am thinking of going to the Snow Monkey Park. We didn't go to the park as it was raining that day. The hotel onsen was closed from 10am-3pm and they didn't serve lunch so we went to the Shibu Onsen Village for lunch. The bus schedule was not frequent and the last bus going back was 3pm. We went to the Shibu Onsen Tourist Information Center and they helped us to book a taxi back. You have no access to the Shibu Onsen as this hotel is not part of their network. If you want to spend more time in the village then you have to plan ahead.

The Japanese-style breakfast was exceptional, they made us a special vegan breakfast and it was one of the best meals we had in Japan. Dinner reservations were full so we went to The Farmhouse, a restaurant within about a two minute walk from the hotel. The public onsen was beautiful and very relaxing, and the private hinoki onsen was amazing as well. Overall this hotel is a must for anyone visiting this area or going to see the snow monkeys!
There wasn’t anything that could be improved upon - I just wish the check-in time were earlier so we could spend more time enjoying the facilities. This is a phenomenal place to stay and the staff are all very helpful and polite even with a language barrier.

It was an unforgettable experience from the moment we arrived to when we drove away. Four well dressed Japanese men and women greeted us and one vallet parked our car while the others offered us the many options to customize our stay, including when we would like our futon beds prepared, dinner reservations, hot spring bath choices, breakfast choice of traditional Japanese or Western food. The rooms were very clean and spacious, with beautiful garden views. Breakfast was elegantly presented and truly a memorable experience. In the evening there was a wonderful concert by a talented singer.
All of the check in options took so long that we missed our chance to visit the Snow Monkey Park before closing. Next morning after breakfast, we did go there but the monkeys were not present. Much more active in early evening when we had arrived, so that was a disappointment.

This is a large traditional Onsen hotel in the hills above the village of Yamanochi within easy walking distance of the snow monkey park. The Onsen facilities, both private and public were very good. The Kaiseki dinners and breakfasts were excellent. The swimming pool is large and well heated. There is ample parking space on a vacant block 50 metres down the road.
There is a strong smell of mould as soon as you enter the hotel. We discovered the source of this smell when we visited the swimming pool: the walls are badly discoloured with mould stains and need cleaning.

The view from the room, the room, the onsen (except the first day when it was boiling, therefore impossible to use)
We could not have dinner there for two nights, even though we had booked three days in advance. I understand Golden Week may have meant a crowd, but we were not even offered the possibility to eat something simple in our room (no in-room dining). We were told to go to one restaurant only, which was a beer garden, when we wanted simple food). As a result, we ate nothing the first night (!) and a packed dessert from their shop for our last dinner. Very unimpressive for a place with such standing!

The most relaxing and luxurious experience I could have asked for after a busy week in Tokyo. So nice that they shuttle you from the train and can also bring you to Shibu Onsen. SO close to the monkey park for a perfect hike and they provide mud boots. The rooms + private balconies were stunning. little details like traditional yukatas, tea, origami, etc. made us feel so special. Indoor/outdoor baths were incredible and had such awesome luxe bathing products. The dinner + breakfast were fit for an emperor and the staff was so kind + friendly.
that we didn't stay more than one night!

Best location to walk to Snowmonkey park

the building is amazing. I loved all the art, all the corners, the garden with the koi, the private onsen for 1500¥ / 45 minutes.
classical music is playing until 10pm. there’s unlimited coffee for free. fresh drinking water, tea, sweets and fresh flowers will wait for you every day in your room.
the room we stayed in was spacious and had beautiful light. the staff was always professional, helpful and considerate.
the snow monkey park is easily reachable by foot, and there’s are great cafe / restaurant (the farmhouse) very close, if you fancy some local beer and food.
i don’t really have any complaints. but it was a little complicated to contact the hotel before arrival to book the shuttle. my emails didn’t go through. I guess it was a problem with booking and someone might want to look into this. my calls also didn’t go through. luckily my Japanese friends could help out and call from their landline and the shuttle waited for us at the station.
communication was a little difficult sometimes, I really need to learn better Japanese.

I can't fault the staff, they were excellent, professional and very nice and work hard. The place is very clean and the onsen very nice and open all night long till 10am. Closed from 10 to 3pm for cleaning. Dinner was nice but I think its a bit expensive at 13,200 extra. Its an easy walk to monkey park that is a plus.
The shibu onsen town is 20 min walk away and really a very cool area bcs many onsen are just mins away from each other and you can wear your robe outside and walk to different onsen so if you want this type of experience then stay in town and get shuttle bus to monkey park. Just mentioning town so you have options but this place is very nice but mostly westerners.

The staff and rooms were so lovely. it is easy to book and used the private onsen at a reasonable price. We also had the public onsen to ourselves, Located close to the snow monkey park. The rooms are large clean, warm and comfortable.
nothing it was lovely.

location food and room
Bathroom was a little out dated . Onsen water wasn’t very hot compare with shibu onsen

Beautiful gardens and outdoor baths. Kaiseki was excellent, maybe the best we had while in Japan.
Hotel is showing some signs of age, but still very comfortable.

Personal care for customers. Atmosphere and detailed attention. Also small music recital in evening was fantastic.
Room temperature was little warm at night.

The staff, location, food, the ambience
This is not bad but if The bed/pillow could be made a bit softer, it could be better. But I understand if it's done to Japanese taste.

Amazing views in winter, walking distance to monkey park, very nice outdoor onsen, kids loved heated swimming pool
meals were very similar every day, dinners are not so thrilling if you're not a fan of wagyu beef, surroundings are very calm, limited possibilities to spend time (car is highly recommended), walls in indoor swimming pool need renovation.

1) Facilities:
public areas are very spacious and atmospheric, surrounding the red pine garden. AND, a beautiful YAMAHA mahogany grand piano in the hall, which can be played freely, really love the sound! Various calligraphy and painting works and sentimental handicrafts everywhere.
2) Room:
large and comfortable, snow mountain & garden view from the large wooded balcony. Love the feeling of being close to nature and breathing highland air.
3) Breakfast:
surprisingly good. 1 hour to finish the luxurious set in Shinshu local style.
4) Onsen:
EXCELLENT! The high flow of 上林-onsen is spectacular. Large indoor & out door onsen. I also enjoy a 45min private reserved onsen set of a small scale with my family. 1500円 is reasonable. Definitely recommend it.
5) Service:
all the staff are really good and warm. Always smiling and respond to your needs.
Nothing.
Just a pity not reserving the dinner.

very helpful and friendly staff. went out if their way to ensure we were looked after.
a simple western style dinner option would be a nice addition.
