About this cottage rental
A beautifully renovated thatched cottage in the picturesque village of Over.
A piece of tranquility just a short distance away from the city of Cambridge.
The cottage is early 18C and has been newly renovated throughout, with newly treated and stripped beams and modern bathroom and farmhouse style kitchen.
Good transport links to the city, local pubs and beautiful walks all within walking distance.
Please note: The ceilings are low (6ft6) so taller people should be prepared for this.
Also, the staircases to the bedrooms are short but quite steep and without baby gates or handrails and they may not suit elderly persons or anyone who struggles to climb.
The layout is rather quirky as originally the building was two separate cottages. There are two separate staircases which open out onto 2 small bedrooms either side giving 4 bedrooms in total. The maximum number of guests is 5 adults/children or 6 if one guest is a small child.
Each side of the cottage has two small bedrooms. On one side the main bedroom has a king size bed (with storage drawers underneath) and directly opposite this is another room with a single bed and a cot and chest of drawers for clothes. There are no doors on these bedrooms to make it easy for parents (like myself) with a baby and young child.
On the other side the two bedrooms both have doors, there is a double bed in one room with storage drawers underneath it and in the child's bedroom opposite there are bunk beds and a large chest of drawers for storing clothes. Please note that if you want to make use of the bunk beds then you will need to make up the beds yourselves and strip the sheets afterwards as the elderly lady taking care of the linen changing cannot manage this task!
There is one main bathroom downstairs with bath and shower and one separate guest toilet. both of which are newly renovated.
The downstairs living area is open plan with 3 parts to the living room and a breakfast room adjoining the kitchen which looks out onto a good sized private garden with an apple tree.
There is a children's playhouse in the garden with steps and a slide. The playhouse was built for my own children to enjoy summers at the cottage. It is only suitable for 2-3 children at a time from ages 3-10 and children must be supervised at all times. I can take no responsibility for any accidents!
Throughout the property here are no central overhead lights, but rather lots of lamps, many of which we have connected up so that they are controlled by the wall switches.
Please note that mobile reception in Over is very poor. You should find enough reception to send texts.
As I am a mum of two young daughters there are ample toys around for younger guests to play with.
Every part of the property is accessible except the outhouse in the garden, the garage, one small larder in the breakfast room and three inbuilt cupboards in which we keep a few personal belongings for visits home.
Parking space for one car is provided in the driveway to the left of the cottage.
Additional cars if necessary must be parked on the roadside.
There are no overhead lights, just standing lamps in the entrance/lounge areas.
Mobile reception at the property is extremely poor. It is possible to get a signal for sending and receiving texts but you have to be quite persistent, walking around for reception.
There is Wifi reception in most areas of the property but the connection is not good in the garden, kitchen or breakfast room.
Please note: I generally don't accept short stay bookings more than 3-4 months in advance as I like to come back and use the cottage myself and can't plan too far ahead!

We spent two days there with our three kids and everybody enjoyed this lovely house with a beautiful garden. Perfectly located to visit Cambridge!

We stayed there for 3 nights, primarily visiting Cambridge. The house is very cozy and clean, it also has a generous garden to sit outside.
It is very easy to get into Cambridge via the Park and Ride stations. The host Elizabeth is very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay here.

Really special 'Chocolate box' cottage, lots of space, nooks and crannys. Cosy rooms in the roof and the kitchen and dinning room very special for entertaining. The garden is a very special outside space.

The Thatched Cottage is lovely, full of character and charm, and within easy reach of Cambridge. Family loved staying in this house.

There were too many rules. If you are tall keep that in mind when booking as the ceilings are low.

We enjoyed our time in Over! The town is so quaint and the cottage was very enjoyable. We loved the garden and kitchen. The host was also very responsive and we had everything we needed for a lovely week ❤️

Really fantastic cottage. Stayed with my family for a New Year break and the cottage had everything we needed. Quirky layout but worked really well for us. Great communication with Elizabeth too

Quaint cottage, with eccentricities we had been warned about, but which added to its charm. On main road through the village but with good off road parking and close to key village convenience store, pub and church

A very old cottage with traditional furniture.
Although well equipped for children it’s a constant worry that small children will trip over the many steps within the cottage.
The stairs are very steep not suitable for those with limited mobility.
The garden was a good size and as we had excellent weather we spent a lot of time in it. With both sun and shade available from the trees.

Weekend away!
Really enjoyed our weekend in this lovely cottage.
Amenities were excellent.
One night we phoned a couple of takeaway places, as advertised in the cottage information, and asked them to deliver to the property but told that due to Covid 19 they were not delivering that far out. However we found an Indian takeaway that delivered within the hour. So if you are thinking of having a takeaway please plan in advance.
WiFi works best in one part of the cottage than another but this is not a major problem at all.
We all had a lovely time and very easily located.
The handover of the keys was very smooth and we were handed some tasty home grown produce.
Lovely fresh flowers were ready and waiting to welcome us.
The cottage has a lovely warm, family atmosphere.
Many thanks and will definitely book again.

Fantastic family four night getaway
We had a fantastic 4 night stay. Our 7 and 4 year old loved the house. The quirky layout was idea and the additional kids toys which were different from their own was a nice treat.
The fresh flowers in the cottage on arrival was a lovely surprise.
The location was great for what we wanted, fresh air walks and access to Cambridge for some punting. We did have some fun removing very sticky mud off the shoes after a walk around the local fields.
Even being 6ft 3 the ceilings didn't feel close and no bumped heads.
The fact it is two cottages joined was great to share with another family giving privacy at bedtime.
The owner was extremely helpful and responsive to any questions we had. We would highly recommend this cottage for those looking for a great family escape.
