About this cottage rental
PLEASE NOTE BEFORE BOOKING: Between 24th July - 3nd September, bookings will only be accepted for 7 nights (Saturday to Saturday).
Believed to have been built in the late 1500’s, legend has it that Tolva’s original purpose was secure storage of contraband seized from the infamous smugglers of this part of the Cornish coast; modified to become a dwelling, after the building of Looe’s customhouse, it became part of a merchant’s home and thereafter was a fisherman’s cottage: rich history makes Tolva a quirky delight at any time of year. Set in the quieter traffic-free backstreets, nestled between the quay and beach, Tolva is within easy reach of Looe’s shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants and all manner of boat-trips from the quay. Fresh fish and local produce are readily available if you prefer not to venture out.
Equally suiting two couples or families with children, Tolva sleeps up to five and facilities are available (travel cot, high chair and stairgate) for infant accommodation.
On entry, stairs lead to the upper ground floor, where you'll find the comfortable lounge and shower room. The lounge is equipped with a Smart TV and DVD player. Down three steps from the entrance hall is the kitchen/diner, complete with cooking facilities comprising oven, hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge & freezer. A Dolce Gusto coffee maker is available (please supply your own pods!).
Free WiFi is offered.
Rear windows overlook neighbours’ enclosed pretty courtyard garden.
Take a boat-trip to Looe Island – a paradise of photographic opportunity for lovers of coastal life, or choose from other available aquatic excursions, from glass-bottomed to sea-fishing; walk the coastal path through West Looe via picturesque Talland Bay and enjoy lunch at The House on the Props or one of the many equally-quaint kitchens of Polperro – emerging suitably-fortified for the return journey (or perhaps, take the bus?). Further afield there are a number of very different but equally absorbing National Trust properties and access to the A38/A30 provides a route to enjoying the many rugged and historic splendours Cornwall offers. (Please check opening times).
Arrive by road or rail (Tolva is 11 mins walk from Looe Station; public parking is available in the town centre (short-term) or for a longer stay, we recommend parking in Millpool Car Park, West Looe, PL13 2AF. The street is accessible only for the purpose of loading and unloading your car.
Fresh fish and local produce is available from locally-owned shops on The Quay, while the Co-Op will fulfil other grocery needs. Local pubs serve food and locally-brewed ales. The town gaol & museum and the amusement arcades are great fun on those rare rainy days.
We supply bed linen, towels, toilet roll, hand soap and tea towels:
**** Please bring your own beach towels ****
Tolva operates a no-smoking policy.
No pets.
No Hen or Stag parties.
No bicycles: bikes cannot be kept in or outside Tolva Cottage.
Access via keys in keysafe on front door, combination supplied.
PLEASE NOTE: Check-in after 16:30 and Check-out before 09:00.
FOOTNOTE (added 14th July 2022) Please read carefully.
Access to Tolva Cottage's kitchen is via the entrance hall and turning left down three stone steps (each approximately 20cm), beneath a low padded lintel (1.5m). The entrance and steps are illuminated for your safety by automatic lighting. There are warning signs on both sides and a rope banister on the right going down. The light switch for main kitchen lighting is above the rope banister, behind your right shoulder as you enter. Please refer to the relevant photos in the gallery. We realise that when the cottage was built, average height was significantly less than today, we consider our low beams and uneven floors an endearing character feature.

First time staying here but over 20 holidays in Looe over the years and this is one of the nicest properties we have stayed in. Central but quiet location, clean accommodation with everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Will be returning

Wonderful to stay in a cottage that created visions of how people might have lived several centuries ago.

A very old fashioned fisherman's cottage, with more than enough modern Features to make for a very enjoyable stay. Would definitely consider another visit.

The cottage is very quaint and well appointed with everything we needed for our short stay. The location is fantastic only a short walk away from anything in East Looe. The cottage was very clean which is a challenge in such an old property. Thank you to our hosts for a lovely stay, we will be back.

As a jam on the top girl, this was the icing on the cake. Returning to our favourite Cornish home from home. The atmosphere of this fisherman's cottage is so great, the back streets so near the beach you can almost hear the old times happening.
All you need with a cosy, generous warm welcome. Convenient, well situated with parking a pleasant walk away. Great communication with kind and understanding hosts. Grateful, relaxed and well rested break. This location makes all the difference.

Lovely cottage right in the centre of town. All facilities were good. The owner was really helpful. Hopefully stay again.

We had a wonderful stay at Tolva Cottage. Nikki and DJ were so helpful and came right over when I asked for a bulb.
The cottage is warm and cozy and just perfect for a family of 3 or 4. Yes, the ceiling in the kitchen is low and my husband bumped his head countless times, but that is part of the charm of such a cottage. One is in the center of Looe, yet it is very quiet. Looe is quite touristy, but very charming and the fish there is delicious, it is really worth buying fish at the harbor first thing in the morning. Thanks for the tip!
The sea gulls were the only downside I can recall. Even at night they make noise, but still I managed to sleep wonderfully.

Very quaint cottage. A pleasure to stay in. The cottage is situated within an easy walk to the beach, shops and cafes etc The cottage is not suitable for less mobile people due to the nature of the stairs leading to the accommodation

Evocative, charming, quaint. Beautifully upgraded to mod cons.
Perfectly situated for us to come and go and never mind popping back in.
Every time I entered I left modern life behind.
Peaceful, an absolute delight with great communication and a delightful surprise extra awaited us.
Cannot wait to return.
Thank you for such a charm

From the moment I booked all communication was excellent. Nikki answered all questions and was very accommodating with requests.
The cottage itself was wonderful and so quirky, we loved it.
Just a stone's throw from everything. I think we tried nearly every pub in Looe for quick halves while dodging the showers and all very friendly.
Thankyou Nikki

Torva is a 3 minute walk from the beach. The cleanest Looe property we have ever stayed in over last 30 years. The owner was very nice and easy to deal with. We would recommend this lovely cottage to all Looe lovers.

Overall this was a great unique little property to stay in, and we loved the history of the place. Really handy location, being so close beach and High Street!
Facilities in the kitchen were great just a shame there is no dishwasher.
Bedrooms were clean and comfortable, and the children loved the bunk bed.
Only negatives were:
1) There was a slight odor from the rugs in the living room and hallway (understandable what with the heatwave we've had).
2) we found the shower very tight and restricted, particularly with only a shower curtain. I would suggest to maybe to install shower doors or refurbishing it into a wet room?

Holiday 2022
Very poor first impression. Although it was indicated in the literature that bed linen and towels would be provided there was nothing laid out when we arrived. We were dismayed as arriving at teatime meant that we had to undertake a search to try and find them. It was a terrible welcome. Fearing we had to sleep on an unmade bed we were forced to try every drawer and chest to see if there was the promised linen anywhere. Finally in the living room we discovered in what appeared at first to be a locked cabinet enough sheets and pillow cases to last the whole summer. After further exhaustive searches we found towels in yet another chest which at first had seemed padlocked. Not a good beginning.
Although we expected low beams and narrow staircases we were not prepared for the inherent dangers this cottage displayed in particular the staircase leading out of the kitchen. Granted there were warning signs indicating a low beam but they could easily be overlooked and straightening up too soon on exiting the kitchen became a death trap. We are surprised there hasn’t been a serious accident there.
On entering the kitchen the location of the light switch is poor and not easily identifiable.
I was counting the days till we could leave and then on the next to last day, we found flooding on the kitchen floor coming from the washing machine which on further exploration seemed to contain a drum half filled with stagnant water. We had not needed to use this appliance so I presume it was a fault not rectified prior to our stay.
We will not be returning and would warn anyone against using this accommodation.

Fun little cottage
We had a lovely week in Tolva cottage. The location was great, so easy for the beach and shops. We couldn't shut some of the windows properly due to the age of the building so some of the rooms were quite noisy with seagulls and people walking passed. We would visit again though, good value for money.

Long Weekend
Just returned after a lovely weekend attending a friends wedding in Looe.
The cottage is a great location minutes from the beach/river and right in the middle of town. The cottage is very quiet apart from the seagulls.
Well equipped kitchen and relaxing living room.
The only downside was the shower, due to the design and shower e curtain we flooded the floor a couple of times.
The second bedroom had a double bottom bunk bed which was a bonus.
Parking is about a 10 minutes walk, but we had no issues driving through the town and dropping our luggage off.
As a regular visit to Looe I would say be patient driving in the town during the day, as the narrow streets, tourist and other vehicles can take time to navigate around.
If you looking for somewhere to eat I can highly recommend Pepes Tex Mex and Papa Ninos.

Quaint little cottage
This is a lovely little cottage. Very clean and ideally situated.
I had plenty of laughs as I’m 5foot 6 and everyone else was 6 feet and above…… just one comment…. Low beams 😁. Whilst they were remembering to duck they forgot the steps and stubbed their toes.
Very well equipped kitchen, and the surprise bottle of wine in the fridge was a lovely touch.
We would certainly return again.

Tolva Cottage, Looe - The Perfect Location
Tolva cottage proved to be an ideal base for visiting either East Looe harbour, beach or town centre (less than 2 mins to each). As well as this convenient location, Tolva cottage was incredibly peacefull and quiet, and perfectly equipped and furnished to cater to all our requirements. We all loved staying there as a family of four and we would strongly recommend this cottage to anyone.

Perfect cottage stay
Very easy from start to finish. Great communication on a fairly late booking. Flexible on check in/out times which was lovely. The cottage is SO CUTE!! Very cosy. For just two of us we had everything we needed, might be a bit of a squeeze for bigger groups in the kitchen/living space. Very clean and fresh throughout. Literally minutes from the beach and all the important stuff - pubs, shops, restaurants. All instructions clear and questions answered promptly. Lovely time spent at Tolva

Quaint cottage, ideal location.
Lovely stay at Tolva Cottage. Excellent location, 1 minute walk from beach, shops, restaurants and river yet quiet at night for sleep. Parking 10-15 mins walk away but you can drive to end of road and stop a few minutes just to unload/ load baggage so not a problem. The property is clean, light, airy and well presented. Suitable kitchenette facilities, fridge, oven, hob, toaster, microwave, coffee machine so easy to do your own meals if you don't wish to dine out. Small table and 4 chairs. No sink plugs so if you wish one bring your own.
TV and DVD player available, settee relatively comfy and additional wicker chairs provided. WIFI good. Cushions and blankets, dvds removed due to covid restrictions downstairs but not a problem. .
Shower and bathroom downstairs, up a few steps, towels provided.
2 good sized bedrooms upstairs, a double bed and one with double and single bunk above. I did find the mattress a little soft for my bad back but manageable. Comfy pillows and quilt. Plenty of wardrobe, drawer space if needed. Stairs quite steep and several places in the property to step up or down so took a bit of getting used to as my mobility is not the best. Caution for the very tall as my husband 6" was almost knocking his head on the beams in the main room.
Ideal for a family stay or couple. Looe is a lovely area to visit and a base to explore the wider area from.
Had good communication from the owners and any questions were answered speedily. Recommended.

Tolva stay 2020
The cottage is very well situated for the beach, harbour, pubs/ restaurants and shops all being a 5 mins stroll away. It’s very quaint set on a narrow st so be aware that you will have to park at the top of the road and wheel your bags down to the cottage( we did this not a problem) Parking is a premium in Looe because most streets are extremely narrow and have no access, you can park on a large car park at Millpool about 10 mins walk away.
We really enjoyed our stay spending most days on the sandy beach and eating out. We also did the coastal walk to Polperro.
Our only criticism of the cottage would be having only one small sofa, it would be more comfortable if another sofa could be squeezed in rather than the wicker chairs (not very comfortable) It was muggy when we stayed so the cottage was warm but it felt safe enough to leave windows open to let some air in-no fans probably due to COVID.
Overall a lovely place to stay.
