About this house rental
Built circa 1872, Abendruh Cottage is a quintessential, historic Bar Harbor summer home, and one of Bar Harbor's first summer cottages. This charming home is located on a Albert Meadow just a stone's throw from the beautiful Shore Path and Frenchman's Bay, and is a block from the Village Green and bustling downtown Bar Harbor. The property features a luxurious wrap around porch with an expansive lawn (perfect for croquet and badminton), large stone terrace with an iron fire pit, fully updated chef's kitchen, lovely gardens and an outdoor shower. As the owners' family summer home for three generations, it holds history, memories, and beautiful original furnishings from days gone by. There are hardwood floors throughout, lovely antiques, unique windows, four access entries, and plenty of outdoor seating for relaxing and dining.
The first floor of this airy, spacious cottage features a living room, a sitting room with gas fireplace, a study (with a sleep futon), a glorious formal dining room (seats 10), a large, modern chef's kitchen, kitchen table area with a farm table and gas fireplace, separate laundry room, and a 1/2 bathroom. There is also a lovely deck right off the kitchen, where the gas grill is located.
The second floor features a huge master king bedroom (with a twin daybed as well) and full bathroom (with small claw-foot tub and walk-in tiled shower). A large hall connects the queen bedroom, two single bedrooms, and another full bath with a long, old-fashioned bathtub. The back hallway leads to a bedroom with twin beds, another with a double bed, large back bathroom, (with tub and shower), and back stairs leading down to the laundry room/kitchen.
Amenities include internet TV (in study), DVD player, WIFI, dishwasher, washer/dryer, outdoor shower, two gas fireplaces, gas BBQ, and parking for up to 5 cars.
Experience the summer cottage life... take a walk down the iconic and historic Shore Path each morning, sit on a bench in Grant's Park, breathe in the salt air and take in the extraordinary view. Try to climb Balance Rock, the way summer visitors have been doing for over 100 years. Cook a lobster dinner and eat it outdoors on the porch. Amble up to Main Street and the Village Green to go shopping or get ice cream and choose from myriad wonderful restaurants for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Go out and explore the best of Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park, including hiking, biking, boating, whale watching, canoeing (kayak and canoe tours), lake swimming, carriage road walks, horse back riding, wonderful dining, shopping, deep sea fishing...Visit the Oceanarium, sail on the Margaret Todd, take a Jackson Lab visitors tour, enjoy tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House, or golf at a PGA top-rated course.
But most of all, take time to relax on Abendruh's front porch with morning coffee or evening glass of wine and a good book, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Great location and size.

Overall we liked the property especially the location if Bar Harbor is your desired destination. I would have given it an overall five star except for the bathroom set up. Overall the bathrooms are “vintage” and only two showers, others are tubs with no hand holds. The furnishings are owner cottage feel and a little tired. However overall we like a “homey feel vs rental home feel.

We stayed for a long weekend and were delighted with this property. Fantastic location, comfortable beds, well appointed kitchen, and a front porch that we spent all our free time enjoying. We were sad to leave and will definitely return!

The house was awesome. Close to everything, very clean and well maintained. Will be looking to stay again if we come back to Bar Harbor

We enjoyed being lazy travelers in this lovely home. It has plenty of room- more than just the two of us really needed- but was a nice vacation spot- very centrally located. We really enjoyed sitting on the large covered front porch as well.

The home was perfect for 8 women that have known each other for 60 years. There were lots of beds, bathrooms and sitting areas for all of us to gather. The kitchen was well stocked and very useable. We spent the afternoon around the firepit telling stories. The location is perfectly walkable to downtown for dinner and shopping as well as a quick walk to the ocean shore path. The house was clean, lots of towels and comfortable beds. The host was available and gave us good advice preparing for hurricane Lee. We highly recommend this property for your friends or family get together.

We love Bar Habor and have been several times. This was our first house. Perfectly situated with two minute walk to the water and to the heart of downtown Main Street. 4 minute drive to grocery story to stock up as well as we had the house at full capacity and had a fire going outside almost every evening. The renovated kitchen lifts the house accommodations up a bit as the rest of the house is original but super well maintained. Not every room has a “shower” but this wasn’t an issue for us and a couple enjoyed a bath for the first time in ages. I see why several comments are from families coming here for years. Kyle was super helpful as well and does a great job maintaining the property. Would definitely stay here again.

We had a great stay celebrating an 80th birthday. The house is an amazing location, and we had a great time.

A group of former college roommates (now just a bit older…) spent a very pleasant four days here. Very clean, great kitchen, grill, and porch seating. It’s a little old-fashioned in some of the rooms, but it’s also a great price and we weren’t renting in BH to sit in our rooms! Overall we were very happy with the place.

We had a fantastic time with family and friends in Bar Harbor and this house served as the perfect spot as it’s conveniently located a block from town and a couple of miles from the Acadia National Park entrance. The house was appointed with everything one needs to prepare and serve a large family dinner. A perfect place to build lifetime memories. We would recommend this spot to all!

The house was immaculate, perfect location. Front porch was lovely and quiet. Communication with manager was quick reply. Highly recommended! Note, there is no A/C. Fans are provided in each bedroom. Apparently we had the hottest days in Maine lol

We loved this location! Our sons enjoyed walking 2 minutes into town and 2 minutes to the shore path! 10 minutes to Acadia. We loved the porch and fire pit area!

Property as advertised, with a great location between Main and shore. Outside seating is special and fire pit was a great capper for each day. Manager was perfect if there were any issues and cleaners were great. Owner was accommodating. Would go again.

We’ve stayed in this cottage off and on with our family for the last 20 years. We even found a guest book entry our family wrote in 2002 still here! It’s full of so many memories and made our Bar Harbor trip complete, especially since we caught a bad luck run of terrible weather most of week. The cottage was the perfect place to kick up our feet and play cards while we waited for the sun to come out. It’s proximity to downtown and the water’s edge makes it the most ideal spot on the island in our opinion. Kyle was extremely communicative and the house was just perfect, equipped with everything you could ever need on vacation. We even got the croquet set out. Bar Harbor is a magical place and we count ourselves very lucky to be able to call it home for a week every few years. Can’t wait to come back and stay at Abendruh Cottage many more times.

We had 3 generations of family staying at Abendruh Cottage in late October. With the perfect location in town, we enjoyed many walks along the Shore Path to all the shops & restaurants in Bar Harbor. Any guests who visited were in awe of the house and the great care that has been taken to preserve the history & character of the property. Just perfect. We can’t wait to return.

The house is charming and well stocked with everything we needed. Loved being so close to the water and town. Two fireplaces and fire pit were perfect for this time of year.

The house was charming with plenty of room for our family of nine to spread out. We loved the living room with all the books, games, and the mysterious sculpture. The kitchen was very well-equipped for all our cooks. The location was perfect! We were a very short walk to the shore. Kyle responded quickly to a minor issue. We loved our time there and would love to visit again.

A special place
It is not often you get the opportunity to spend a few nights in a beautiful historic home. Then have the home be one block from the ocean and one block from the downtown. A really special experience.

Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park trip
The house was fabulous. 5 adults and 3 kids and we had so much room. Charming property, yard and especially porch. 1 min walk to the water and easy walking access to all the restaurants in Bar Harbor. Arcadia NP close as well. Couldn't have had a better location! Don't miss staying in this house. A real winner!

Great for extended family!
Our family had a wonderful stay. Plenty of bedrooms for everyone to have their own spot for our extended family. Perfect location: steps from shore path for walks with the dog, easy drive to carriage road and trailhead access, and right in Bar Harbor for evening trips to the candy store or ice cream shop!

Great Bar Harbor house
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the property. The space was perfect for three couples. The kitchen was outstanding and the outside porch and fire pit were perfect for enjoying great weather and a nice drink. But the highlight was the location - just a few hundred feet from both the Main Street and the water. Highly recommend.

Great house and great location!
We loved staying here and we will be back. Comfortable and roomy, this house has great classic New England decorations. The space in this cottage is amazing - plenty of room for everyone. It is located within walking distance of everything in Bar Harbor. The manager was easy to reach and very quick with replies. The only negative is the old fashioned separate hot and cold faucets in the bathrooms - but we got used to them. Outstanding place to stay!

Amazing House
This house was perfect. The location can’t be beat - it’s a short walk to downtown bar harbor. The old house charm was especially appealing. The house was clean and well appointed. We loved it and would love to go back.

Dreamland
Amazing weekend away celebrating my parents 60th birthdays and first extended trip with our newborn. The house was the perfect location to run home if and when we needed to from town, the shore path, and Acadia. The porch was beyond peaceful … we birdwatched and listened to the birds every dewy morning while feeding the baby, and enjoyed cocktails in the crisp evenings. The house had some yellow jacket issues and the property manager was on top of it and sent me a warning before arrival, and even came to help us out with them. The kitchen was perfect and beautiful and the rooms were comfortable and perfect after long days hiking in Acadia… we have been to bar harbor multiple times, and being able to stay walking distance to everything was magical. Especially early morning walks to The shore path to watch the fog over the ocean … highly recommend and will be back for sure!!!

Big house-great location
My family and I had a great stay at this property. First, it is right off Main street in downtown Bar Harbor and a stones throw from the water. It is far enough off Main street to be very quiet, but within great walking distance to all shops and restaurants. The house is vintage, but in very good shape. The Kitchen is modern and big. Lots of bedrooms and bed options for a large family. Great coverage front porch where we had breakfast every morning. This is an old house. There is no A/C, but we did not need it. ceiling and window fans kept us plenty cool as the weather was mild, even in late July. The bathroom sinks are old school with a separate tap for hot and cold, but if that is the biggest complaint, than life is good. Small TV with no cable, but we hooked up our computer to watch Netflix, etc. All in all, a very enjoyable stay.

Family Heirloom
We had a wonderful time at 20 Albert Meadow, particularly on the front porch. This late 1800s home is a wonderful family heirloom. It is decorated with old family photos and new paintings of the coast, colorful fabrics, new paint, vintage furniture, and character. The yard and flowers are beautiful. It is perfectly positioned between the Shore Path and the Village Green. You are close to all the shops and restaurants. Not that you have to eat out. The modern kitchen is ready for your family chef. It is well equipped and, helpfully, well labeled. With a large dining room and kitchen table there’s no shortage of places to eat including the front porch. Did I mention the front porch? It was our favorite thing, from coffee to cocktails to a rainy day. And we did spend one rainy day there, but they were ample games to entertain the family. As this is an older home there is no air-conditioning. This was not a problem for our trip as there are window screens that can be placed strategically in the windows to create cross ventilation and window fans. We were perfectly comfortable. During a heat wave this might be a problem, but how often does this happen in Maine? There is heat available for the colder months as well as fireplaces. There is an outdoor fire “pit“ with Adirondack chairs. There were four toilets and three full baths, but note that there are only two bathrooms with showers (one has only a tub). There is an outdoor shower that could help with that, but it was not functional during stay. This was not a problem as we simply shared the master bedroom shower when needed. Such idiosyncrasies come with an older home. I would rather deal with that and enjoy the character than have a modern house with all the plumbing. Kyle, the manager, was responsive throughout. The house description and maps left on property we’re very useful. If I were to return to Bar Harbor with a large group I would certainly enjoy staying at this property again

Perfect Bar Harbor Trip
I can't say enough about this beautiful house! It was the perfect base for a great week celebrating our two high school graduates. Plenty of room for two families to spread out but also to spend lots of time together for game nights and wonderful meals. The porch was perfect for relaxing and reading We thoroughly enjoyed being within walking distance of everything. We also enjoyed lots of hiking in Acadia and a beautiful day taking the ferry to Winter Harbor and Schoodic Point. Many thanks to Kyle for being so responsive to our questions and for checking in. I can't recommend this beautiful home highly enough. Thank you!!
