About this bed and breakfast
Imagine a large, private balcony suite, right where the lively French Quarter spills over into the famous jazz district of Frenchmen Street.
A special New Orleans gem, Ruthie's Balcony Suite bears the name of our beloved family matriarch. And for good reason. It's the best room in the Lanaux Mansion. Vaulted ceilings soar above a huge bedroom/living area, including a spacious kitchenette and full-sized bathroom. But it's the balcony you'll love most. Overlooking the corner of Esplanade and Chartres, it's the perfect place to people-watch while enjoying the pot pourri of sounds that drift over from the nearby markets, jazz clubs, and busy Mississippi waterfront.
*ABOUT THE SPACE*
The Lanaux Mansion is a historic bed & breakfast at the intersection connecting the lively French Quarter with the famous jazz and blues district of the Faubourg-Marigny - a.k.a. Frenchmen Street.
The mansion consists of two deluxe 1-bedroom suites, one massive 2-bedroom suite, and one separate cottage suite, all with private bathrooms and kitchenettes. Ground-level suites have private entrances, while the second-floor suites share a common staircase just inside the mansion's front door.
This listing describes Ruthie's Balcony Suite on the second floor.
Occupying nearly a third of the mansion's second floor, Ruthie's Balcony Suite is our premier accommodation. It features a spacious living area, newly redecorated private bathroom, and a large, sunny kitchenette with everything you need to warm your food and chill your drinks - including a microwave, toaster, a coffee & tea station, tableware, and a full-sized fridge to hold groceries and leftovers from those big French Quarter meals.
Beautifully renovated, the suite combines the classic architecture and detailing of the period with every modern comfort you could want - wi-fi, air conditioning, smart HDTV, a ridiculously comfortable pillow-top King mattress, and much more. There's even a 7' sofa for a third sleeper if you're traveling with a child or friend.
And did we mention the private wrought-iron balcony that wraps the front of the house? It's all yours. Grab your coffee or cocktail and make yourself at home up here, listening to the sounds of the Quarter and watching the locals and tourists go about life on the streets below.
Oh, and don't miss the sunsets. They're pretty hard to beat.
Everything you need is right here for you in Ruthie's Balcony Suite, though we imagine you won't spend too much time inside. After all, you're mere steps away from the city's best entertainment, restaurants, and bars.
*ABOUT THE LOCATION*
Step outside the Lanaux Mansion and cross the street to hit the bars and restaurants of the French Quarter, or walk around the corner to find the myriad music spots on Frenchmen Street.
You're about a block from either.
Also within a few minutes' stroll are the famous and sprawling French Market, the legendary beignets and coffee of the Cafe du Monde, the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral, and the paddle-wheeled riverboats along the Mississippi waterfront - not to mention more bars, restaurants, museums, curio shops, and art galleries than you could possibly ever visit in one trip.
The dream-like settings of Audubon Park and City Park, with their massive moss-covered oaks and glorious mansions lining the nearby avenues, are a short drive or bike ride away. Further afield, you have the deep Louisiana bayous full of gators and cajuns alike, plus historic battlefields and plantations to tour.
You couldn't possibly see and do everything New Orleans has to offer . . . but you can sure have fun trying!
Grab a drink and start planning your trip now. Or come with no plan at all. Either way, it's easy to have fun when you're here in the Big Easy.
*ABOUT THE LANAUX MANSION*
You might recognize the stately Italianate mansion at 547 Esplanade from "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," just one of the many films and TV shows in which it's been featured.
The house itself is a star, with a fascinating past. But it's not just its good looks and pedigree that make the French Quarter Lanaux Mansion so attractive. It's the unbeatable location at the corner of Chartres Street and Esplanade Avenue - which literally straddles the line between the rollicking French Quarter scene and the famous music clubs and jazz dens of Frenchman Street.
Sitting on the balcony with a drink in your hand, you might hear the blare of trumpets from nearby Frenchmen Street, the drums of a parade on Esplanade, and the whistle of a riverboat rolling down the mighty Mississippi, just two blocks away. If you're lucky, you might even catch the spectacle of a second-line or jazz funeral during your stay here.
Built in 1879 by wealthy attorney Charles Andrew Johnson, the house has played host to not only actors and film crews, but to prominent figures of history including southern general Robert E. Lee and others. Some even claim there's a ghost among its distinguished list of guests.
Wallpaper from around the time of the American Civil War still adorns the massive double parlors downstairs, as does much of the home's original furniture. The vaulted guest-room ceilings soar high overhead. And the decor is a fine mix of classic period architecture and stylish upscale amenities.
In 140 years, it has changed owners only four times. Most recently, it was the gregarious and accomplished New Orleanian businesswoman Ruth Bodenheimer who ran the home as a much-loved bed and breakfast for decades until her passing in 2019.
Inspired by Ruth's love for the house and the one-of-a-kind city called New Orleans, her daughter Beth now proudly carries on the legacy of making guests feel welcome and at home here.

Beautiful room and upscale furnishings! … and location…location…location!!! Perfect for anywhere I wanted to go. Balcony was huge and fun to people watch from and listen to outdoor music down the street. The jasmine was blooming sending their sweet smell with the breeze that was often blowing keeping the balcony (and room) cool. The kitchen was a great bonus stocked with breakfast items. Wish I could have just moved in! I look forward to returning :))

We enjoyed our stay. Everything was very well thought out and the host was very accommodating to our flight schedule! A note for future guests if you are staying on a weekend, there is a sound machine in the room and you will definitely want to use it! The traffic from Frenchman Street and Deactur is very loud. We expected this going into the trip on a parade weekend so it did not afftect our overall experience.

My mom and I came for a mother/daughter trip to NOLA and had a wonderful stay at this amazing historical mansion! The host made it easy for us to leave our luggage in the lobby area both when we arrived and after check out to accommodate our flight times. Ruthie’s balcony suite was spacious, well decorated and comfortable! Both the French quarter and Frenchman street were easily walkable from this location. We had a great trip and would definitely stay at this place again in the future!

This place was absolutely amazing. Such a gorgeous house with so much history we feel honored to have stayed there. We loved everything about this place. It was clean, comfortable and gorgeous. We will be back.

Beth, was great very responsive before and during the trip. The room, Ruthie’s Porch, and house were amazing. Nothing beats having coffee and overlooking Esplanades to start your day.

We loved the location of The Lanaux Mansion! Perfect for walking to the French Quarter! My only disappointment was that the first floor rooms were all locked so we didn’t get to see any of the house, other than our room and the front entry.

Rooms were great (we stayed in 2 separate apartments and loved them both!). We weren't able to reserve the same room for our entire stay, Beth made the transition work smoothly. The mansion's location on Esplanade is perfect for visiting the French Quarter and Frenchmen's Street. Also, only 2 blocks to the streetcar.

Walking into this place for the first time was like traveling back in time. All the decorations and wall paper were amazing! The room was very impressive with high ceilings and a very cool balcony. It was definitely a room that felt luxurious and comfortable. Everything we wanted to see in the French Quarter and on Frenchman was extremely walkable! Overall the location is very pedestrian friendly. We would absolutely stay there again!

Charming and comfortable stay
My sister and I stayed in Ruthy’s suite for a sister trip/her 40th birthday. Andrea the property manager was extremely responsive and helpful with any questions we had. The suite is so calm and comfortable, lots of lovely details (and cold AC!) which is necessary in June. The amenities were all as advertised and in great condition.
We appreciated the earplugs, as street traffic was louder than expected - late night music/hotrodding down Esplanade was somewhat loud. We were still comfortable and able to sleep. Thank you!

Alas, was excited to stay but checked in and there was a snafu and another party was unpacking as I arrived. The on-site manager felt badly and offered a night out but in the end we had to move to a hotel on the other side of the Quarter for our 5 night stay. Sad face. Quick refund though and would be willing to try again. Great location and nicely tended lobby (as far as I got).

We can't say enough great things about this place! It's a beautiful house. We stayed in Ruthie's Balcony. We loved sitting out on the balcony at night, enjoying the faint music you could hear from the French Quarter. Close enough to everything that a short walk will get you almost anywhere you want to go, but far enough away to be able to sleep just fine. Need a place to stay in New Orleans? STAY HERE!

You feel like you have stepped into the historical south when you stay in this beautiful home. Beth wowed us with 15 foot ceilings in a suite with a lovely conversation area, a spacious bathroom with plenty of storage for all our trappings, and a well stocked kitchen. But coffee on the balcony in the morning and cocktails in the shaded courtyard put it over the top for luxury. We were surrounded by opportunities for entertainment and resources for provisions. The French Quarter was in easy walking distance and we were surrounded by jazz venues. We will be back!

Paradise on Esplanade
We cannot say enough about how wonderful the entire Lanaux Mansion experience was. From the charming and helpful host, Beth B, to the grandeur of the property, to the sublime balcony we loved everything.
We are veteran lovers of NOLA and have visited many times but this is the first time where our encampment became an integral part of the NOLA experience. We rushed through our tours through the city to spend more time in our apartment!
We cannot wait to return.

Great historical stay
Everyone on the street was interested in the fact that this building was a rental. The tours stopped right out front. The location was close enough to Jackson Square and Bourbon Street but not right in the mix which is what we perferred. The walk was doable even if a tad sketchy at times since the location was on the edge of the French quarter. The interior was beautiful and comfortable. The only downside was parking. We had to pay for extended parking in a lot four blocks aways and drag our bags to the building. A dedicated loading spot could prevent this issue in the future. Overall it was 5 stars. Thank you.

Stunning property! An absolutely amazing building and attention to detail. Very well kept and clean. Owners were fantastic.

This was our 1st time in New Orleans so the mansion & it's location was perfect. I thought the balcony was so nice to sit out on @ night and catch a nice breeze. The sounds of bourbon street were enough to know where you were but faint enough to enjoy a good night's sleep. The couch is surprisingly comfy to sleep on. The bathroom & kitchen are just enough. We loved everything about this place! No complaints at all!

I chose this property because I needed a king size bed. The unit was listed as having a king-size bed and a pull-out sofa. It had neither! Upon arrival we have problems getting into our unit as the systems were quoted incorrectly. I called the property manager and things were straightened out rather quickly. We walked into the unit and found ear plugs on the table on both sides of the queen size bed. Yes, they were needed! The people in the unit next to us were loud and there was a lot of noise from the Street. People, cars and air traffic. I was glad I only booked it for three nights. We made the best of it and enjoyed our time there.
