About this house rental
Easy Access to Surf City Beach on Topsail Island
Rents Saturday to Saturday for weekly stays.
5 Bedrooms / 2 Bathrooms / Sleeps 12
On the corner of Anderson Road and Sunset Avenue, this vintage beach cottage is directly across the road from the oceanfront at beach access 0-2A, a tucked away sand dune crossover. Even in the high season, this neighborhood is peaceful and benign, as there is no public parking crowd allowed in the area. Your crew can scurry back and forth to the waves as much as they want! Sunset Avenue is a tiny residential alley lined with old growth live oaks, terminating in a gentle sand ramp into the intracoastal waterway. Bring your paddleboards and kayaks, or if you prefer, rent one of ours! The property owner offers 2 kayaks for rent: pay an extra $100 to rent one, or $150 for both. Bikes, surf/skim/ and body boards are just a few doors down at Topsail Surf and Cycle; it couldn't be more convenient! And you can easily walk your boards down the alley; you are only steps from the water in either direction. Some of the best local sea-to-table dining is at the Beach Shop & Grill, only a mile and a half from your door, in the heart of Historic Topsail Beach. From sunbathing and swimming to fishing and surfing, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy on this beautiful island. Explore the local shops and restaurants, take a fishing cruise out with an area fishing guide, or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun. With so much to see and do on Topsail Island, your vacation will be filled with unforgettable memories and moments of pure relaxation. Topsail Island is a 28-mile-long barrier island made up of marshes, estuaries, dunes, and shorelines. Privately owned shops, restaurants and attractions abound on Topsail, as well as the neighboring mainland towns. Learn the history of Topsail at the Missiles and More Museum and understand how to be a good steward of the sea at the Touch Tank Aquarium in Surf City and the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue & Rehabilitation Center for laid back and family friendly things to do on Topsail. Each of these attractions offers its own unique charm and adds to the allure of a vacation on Topsail Island.

Overall, we were satisfied, but there are significant deficiencies. We rented the entire place (5 persons upstairs, 4 downstairs) for a week in July. The cottage is old and a bit shabby. The 2 bathrooms are very small. One bathroom for 4 adults is barely enough and for 5 is ridiculous. The door to the outside shower would not close completely. When we checked in the back door downstairs could not be locked. This was fixed that night on our insistence. Do not bother to contact "maintenance" for assistance. Contact the rental office directly when you have problems. Security is an issue. Both upstairs and downstairs, the wooden door frame that received the lock bolt was badly damaged. I suspect that each door could easily be kicked open when "locked." In the queen-bed downstairs bedroom, the overhead fan only worked when the light was on, and the window air conditioner was loud, making comfortable sleeping at night dicey. This was not a big problem for us but could be on hot, humid nights. There are no ice makers in the refrigerators and only one ice tray in each, so you may want to bring an ice tray or 2. All our communications with the owner and rental company prior to and during the visit went very smoothly, and we appreciate the friendly interactions.

Great Location
The house is at a great location. It has an access point to the sound on one side and an extremely short walk to the beach on the other. The neighborhood is awesome. It's very quiet and we had a very relaxing week. It's close enough to things to do, but far enough away from a lot of activity (which is just what we wanted).
The only real problem with this property is the downstairs. It has ONE A/C unit to cool the entire place. When you close the doors to sleep at night for privacy, your room heats up because it does not have central air. It was pretty stuffy down there the entire week. You also have to be careful because there is a spot on the floor that several of our guests tripped over. The concrete is uneven. It's a definite hazard.
It also could have been cleaner. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't awesome. There was dust on the baseboards and the mats in the bathroom looked like they hadn't been cleaned up in a while. There was also old mouse poop in the drawer below the oven. Apparently they have a bug problem also. We saw some cockroaches inside and outside. We were told they were palmetto bugs. They came and sprayed outside but couldn't inside because we didn't know they were coming and were not ready to leave so they could spray.
Communication was easy and the manager was very responsive. For as much money as you spend on a place you expect it to be nice and clean and to at least have central air conditioning in all the spaces.

Family Vacation
This house provided a wonderful place for our family from 3 states to reunite for a great beach vacation. We encountered 1 problem that was resolved quickly before it became a larger issue. The Sea unit has a small but adequate bedroom and bathroom with a very comfortable bed. The neighborhood was quiet and sunset viewing was right down the side street.
