Miserable experience
Miserable experience
Location is good, and there were lots of surprises. The owner lives upstairs so those upstairs windows you see are not part of the rented space and there is no view. The home has significant safety issues which meant we didn’t feel comfortable having our grandkids come to the space. There are no working smoke or CO2 alarms and lots of exposed wiring throughout the house (fire code violation). There is no heat except for tiny space heaters insufficient for the space so we wore our coats and wrapped blankets around us in the house. There is; no hot water in the master bathroom, limited warm water in the kitchen and other bath, and the garage bath shower alternates scalding water with cold every 30 seconds so we couldn’t shower. One of the sink faucets leaks water all over the room when you turn it on so we were constantly mopping it up. The bunk bedroom has a draft to the outside, is freezing cold and smells like skunk, making it hard to sleep. The washing machine worked ok but the dryer isn’t functioning, and I was left with a load of wet clothes. The dryer venting is unsafe. There are 6-9 light switches in every room and it’s a project to figure them as out lights flicker randomly and a main light in the living room that doesn't turn off which was annoying. As said in other reviews several of the exterior doors don’t unlock or there is no key, restricting egress from the house. Portions of the deck have construction debris, and there are no written instructions. At first we tried to tough it out by leaving the house each day, only to come home and randomly find workmen in the house and the front door standing wide open. We discovered more issues each day and as they increased toughing it out was no longer an option Once we were here and welcomed by the owner, he was unresponsive to further emails or texts (denies he got them) until the very end stating “that’s sad and he had no record of the texts”, so I provided more details and gave up. I discovered a review on the site from two weeks prior to our stay reporting the same problems. We ended up departing and paying for a hotel. Our frustration was validated by the local code department of the city of Encinitas (home fit the definition of uninhabitable). They also told me that he didn’t have a permit to run a rental property. If he repairs these things the house will be a great rental. But for our group of six It was a miserable experience and a family get together ruined.

The location of this home is absolutely fantastic! However, the home was not ready for guests. Large amounts of construction materials and debris were visible, electric switch boxes uncovered with exposed wire ends, no hot water for 2 days, no homeowner tv access (yet there were fantastic tv monitors throughout the home as advertised) toilet leak in one bathroom that got resolved, access to what would be a great fourth bedroom that was disheveled (personal file boxes, mattress on top of furniture with other stuff on top) complicated light switches, two of the four beds without sheets, one patio door could not be locked and two patio doors had no keys to unlock, had to figure out where to put our trash (hope we got it right) no homeowner binder with instructions. When these issues are resolved then it will be a wonderful place to stay. This street and Encinitas - FABULOUS!
