This cottage was special. From the outdoor kitchen/living room to the comfy bed and the private outdoor toilet/shower. Experiencing off-grid living was awesome. Neil was a great host and explained everything to us and we had some great personal "talk story" sessions. One of the reasons for this short staycation was to look at properties and we are looking forward to hopefully being friends and neighbors with Neil. We definitely recommend his BnB.

We spent a week on Oahu for my mother-in-law's memorial service and then came to the Big Island for a second week to recover from the first week. Mission accomplished! The property was described perfectly. When planning this trip, were initially concerned that we might be too warm without A/C, but we were perfectly comfortable the whole time. We loved the outdoor shower and the open kitchen and dining area. Neil met us at the gate on a dark and rainy night when we arrived, and he was a perfect host. Listen to his advice to turn off of Volcano Road onto Kulani (instead of whatever Google suggests, as of 7/2024). Neil gave some great advice for a good beach (Carlsmith) and good dining (Hawaiian Style Cafe - we ate there three times and loved it). We hope to be back someday.

It was as if we entered another world along the lines of Swiss Family Robinson. It was a delight to be in a private setting so connected to the rain forest with kitchen and living room open to nature. Neil had gone to great care in insuring that guests needs are taken care of.

When we arrived, Neil was there to greet us, show us how to handle the gate and number of things for the property. He was very friendly, kind and understanding. He checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. This property had great space to walk a dog for a pet friendly VRBO. We had amble space to walk our pet and enjoy the view and lot.
Once it was time to check out , check out was simple and straightforward
We appreciated his communication and outgoing personality
We look forward to potentially renting his property again

Everything about my 2 week stay was perfect. It was a cozy place that connected me with the island in a way a hotel never could. I loved the outdoor kitchen/eating area. It was very well stocked. The bed was a comfortable nest of soft blankets and pillows piled on a wonderful mattress. The rain and frogs sang me to sleep each night. It was wonderful taking a warm shower outside each morning. I’ve never done that before and thoroughly enjoyed it. The lot was private and I felt safe- especially traveling alone. Neil was a perfect host and was as helpful as I needed. I highly recommend this property and will be suggesting it to my friends. Enjoy the island. Aloha!

What an a amazing stay!! From the time we pulled onto the property we were awstruck. Its something out of a fairy-tale. Neil was amazing, greating us with eggs, tangerines, and a thorough walk through of the place.
We loved waking up to all the birds singing and going to bed with the frogs singing. Other reviews felt the frogs were too loud, however not for us.
The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed. Sitting outside each morning with some coffee on this lad was magical. On the day it rained we enjoyed reading and relaxing. Neil was a gracious host and its very clear how much heart he has put into the place and how much he loves to share it.
If we are on the island again, we would forsure stay here. Thank you Neil!

Just stayed one night but the cabin was very comfortable and well-appointed, surrounded by well-tended grounds. Neil was the perfect host, gave us four fresh eggs and a bunch of tangerines from the trees just outside the cabin. There are coqui frogs so if these disturb you, bring noise-cancelling ear buds. Mahalo Neil!

Our stay was amazing & we didn’t want to leave! Neil was a great host who met us at check in and explained everything about the property, and even had some treats for us and the pups. Plush bedding, soft towels, & plenty of hot water, our stay was more luxurious than I thought it would be being in a tiny home that is off the grid. We enjoyed cooking in the outdoor kitchen, playing cards at the table, & just being surrounded by nature. By the end of our stay, we & our dogs were feeling so relaxed, happy, & refreshed that we wished we could stay longer. We will definitely be booking this again & highly recommend it!

The property has all of the comforts of home in a private area far away from the tourists. The chorus of frogs and exotic birds at night was relaxing. We were only there for one night but wished we had booked it for longer. Neil is the best host you could ask for. This was one of the highlights of our trip around the island. Most of the time a Vrbo is just a place to sleep for the night. Neil's tiny house was an great experience.

Everything about this surpassed our expectations!
Neil was very accommodating with our arrival (almost too friendly if that is possible).
Everything was clean, the beds were super comfortable, and the place is stocked full of extras (coffee, tea, sunscreen, beach accessories).
You are out in the woods - a few things you might want to know: The coqui frogs are LOUD at sundown - but they die out a few hours later (Neil even supplies ear plugs if you need them). A few bugs, but not many. There are a ton of stars, lots of privacy, and a place like none other!
*IF* there is a downside, it is the road in. It is about 8 minutes of feeling like you are on a child's roller coaster. It is straight, but up-down-up-down.
The gate security is a bit low-tech, but it works.
The pictures show you what you are getting, so look closely. It is an outdoor kitchen / patio, outdoor flushable toilet, warm (almost hot) outdoor shower... and a retreat from traditional hotels / vacation rentals.
Oh... did I mention Neil is awesome? Because he is!

Wonderful place. Very rustic almost like glamping but with a roof and a kitchen. Neil was a great host. We actually dubbed it as a Frog cottage. Off the grid but still close to supermarkets, stores and Volcano national park. Neil was so generous and accommodating. My fiancee and I loved our stay. A magical enchanting rustic place away from the crowd. Thank you Neil. We loved our stay. Stay true to yourself and take care!

This is a beautiful property! All the typical amenities with the novelty of a tiny house. Tricky getting to, especially at night, but Neil’s directions are very clear and the start was definitely worth the challenge. Would recommend.

We're greeted with a wa m welcome and a very detailed walk through that made us very confortable with using all the features of the home. The property is surrounded by tall, beautiful, wise trees and all you can hear is nature. The shower is nice and warm, and the bed is so comfy that you almost don't wanna leave it. Even with raining almost every day, the experience was still amazing and very relaxing. It feel like a retreat where you can unplug and reconnect with what really matters. Hubby and I love the experience and would highly recommend to anyone!

After a long and delayed flight from Maui, we arrived at this gorgeous little home that was just perfect for our family! Everything looked even better in person. The house is so well maintained by the owner Neil, who has been such a great host. He met us at 10pm to greet and show us around the house and its amenities. The place was meticulously clean and well stocked. The beds were so comfortable, good quality new sheets and towels, the nature around us and the gorgeous moonlight seeing from the porch made this short trip a marvelous one.
Neil had some fresh eggs for us which was really helpful as I needed to feed my son breakfast before leaving to his canoe race. Neil also had water bottles in the fridge for us, but what made me so impressed was that He had extra toothbrushes, insect repellent, shaving cream etc, (which it was needed as my son forgot to pack his toothbrush). Everything was in place and we had plenty of supplies, pretty much more than needed. The property was gated and well maintained (made us feel super safe). Loved the solar lights around the property, out at the porch. We just wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the place and explore more. We are already planning to come back some time next summer but to stay a few nights. Communicating with Neil was so easy and he kept in touch with me since my stressed time at the airport. He was super supportive and understanding and helped with the directions. Thank you again Neil. See you soon. Mahalo!

Super kind host! The place is super clean and everything has been thought of. Beds and pillows super comfortable. Cooking in the outdoor kitchen is a lot of fun taking in the views and socializing with the fam. Great location to experience this side of the island. Highly recommend this rental.

This property was everything we hoped it would be. Sitting outside, cooking outdoors with the fresh eggs Neil left us, and our groceries from the farmers market was amazing. The bed was comfortable and we slept great. If we ever find ourselves back on The Big Island we will be staying here again for sure.

This property was a very unique stay. Off the beaten path, but worth it to us. The property was very private, surrounded by trees and and nothing but the sounds of birds and frogs. The kitchen and bathroom are outdoors, giving a rustic cabin feel. We enjoyed cooking meals on the patio each day and lounging at the dining table or on the hammock watching movies. The property is named Thalia’s Enchanted Forest after the owner’s dog who passed away. We had such a peaceful experience here and feel grateful to have stayed at Thalia’s place. The only thing that could be seen as a negative is that the coqui frogs are quite loud at night. I brought earplugs in case it bothered me, but it didn’t. We fell asleep fine each night to the sound of frogs and woke up to the sound of birds. The home itself has two beds… queen size in main room and twin in the loft. Everything was clean and in great condition. We definitely enjoyed our stay here and would stay again.

This property is overflowing with the care and attention that Neil has put into it. It is off the beaten path but don't let that deter you. Neil will meet you at the gate and welcome you to the tiny-home wonderland that he has created. The actual house is lovely in every way–open air kitchen and living space, comfortable main bedroom, quaint but totally adequate loft with twin bed that our friend was quite happy with, outdoor shower and loo that are invigorating and really cool. We appreciated Neil's work to create a sustainable space that is also really user-friendly and relaxing. No detail was overlooked. And thank you for the fresh eggs and lemons right off the trees! We will be back for sure!

This tiny home is a perfect place to (re)connect with the lushness of the rain forest and a life both simple and comfortable. Short drives from Volcano and Hilo, and instead of traffic noise, choruses of birds by day and chirping frogs by night. A wonderfully attentive host, available when needed but there was nothing to need - every detail was thought of. A fabulous find that was a gem in my stay on the islands. Mahalo, Neil!

My son and I stayed at Neil's place for two nights, and really enjoyed every minute of our stay. My expectations for the place were already quite high, but the actual surroundings and the place itself were even better than I had hoped! The arboreal setting was lovely, and the cabin was just perfect for the two of us; my son loved the loft where he slept. The beds were comfortable, and I felt like everything that I wanted was there. The outside bathroom area was unique and I appreciated the flush toilet — really enjoyed the outdoor hot shower as well.
The place was built by Neil himself (impressive!) and was so well maintained. We could feel how much he cherished the place. Neil was such a wonderful and caring host and we felt like we'd met an old friend while we were talking with him. The eggs he shared with us were the best I ever had!
His enchanted little cabin was like a sanctuary for us and we refreshed our tired bodies and minds. My son and I both hope to visit again soon.

I cannot put into words how wonderful it was to stay on Neil’s property. The pictures do not do it justice. What a wonderful relaxing place to reconnect with family, yourself and nature. We did not want to leave.
Neil was an exceptional host, very giving and polite. He was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the area. If you have an opportunity to stay here, do not give it a second thought.

This was a great off grid cabin with all the comforts of a regular home. Neil keeps the place clean and has thought through all the details. Come check out what is possible on the island of Hawaii.

We take our pups on a staycations around the island and feel very lucky that Neil allows for pets as not many places do. It was so perfect to chill in the outside area with the pups knowing they were safely fenced in and loving life. It’s a beautiful property, super clean and had all we could ever ask for. We can’t wait to return! Mahalo for your hospitality Neil!

We were very happy with our stay. It was very clean and more spacious than we were expecting. We really enjoyed hanging out each evening outside, cooking and playing games. We watched TV each night, which was nice as well. The property is very nice and everything we needed was provided.

His property was very special and well thought out. You can tell he put a lot of love into the property. He has such a unique feeling to it. I miss it already!
This property to me was my favorite part about the trip. Look no further for a really special experience.

Off the Grid Experience
Unique, private and well thought out. Neil has created an interesting and special place. Every time I wish I had something like a kitchen tool, or something I forgot to bring...there it was. We never turned on the TV but the WiFi was super fast so phones and tablets were running smooth. Proximity to Volcano National Park was the reason we booked it but when we left, we wished we had stayed longer.

The coquina frogs are extremely louder than usual. There was a two much mildew and or moss around the property that was creating a bad smell, in my opinion. The host made me feel uncomfortable in a few different ways one being the gate situation and that some one came to the property soon after I got there. The over all vibe is that the neighborhood doesn’t want this type of activity. The fact that it’s so far away and that the host mentioned some thing about a gun I think most people should and may not feel safe here. The host also went through my personal belongings while I was gone and was monitoring when I was able to go to sleep, he thought. I don’t know how as it didn’t seem like any one could see me ? Maybe the lights. There was also loud heavy machinery working near by that was very noisy most of the day and mourning. It was generally wet, cold, and raining most of the time. Mildew inside the cabin on unstained or treated wood. There was lots of coffee and tea and supplies there was also internet and t.v. That worked quite well!
