About this farm stay rental
WELCOME!
Our quiet, pet-friendly 1830s farmhouse offers the classic Vermont experience. Surrounded by pastures and open woods it features expansive views of nearby mountains and beautiful skies (at night the complete absence of light pollution guaranties stunning views of the Milky Way and numerous constellations.)
The immediate area offers all kinds of activities that will please families with young children as well as dog owners and sports fanatics.
Swimming, biking and hiking during the summer, long walks in autumn during foliage season, and in winter the Craftsbury Outdoor Center for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing is 20 minutes away. Several other ski resorts are under an hour away (Burke is 40 min., Jay Peak and Stowe close to an hour.)
Our 1.5 acre property is a mix of wild meadow and carefully managed lawn and paths for children (and dogs) to play and run around (there are barely any ticks, we've seen only one in 4 years.)
A sitting area allows for dining and grilling outside (with our vegetable garden always providing something for a nice salad.) The WIFI reaches all the way there and this is also a great spot to work surrounded by nature, including Zoom calls.
Wild flowers are progressively reclaiming the land and we’ve added many pollinator-friendly plants and as a result hummingbirds, monarchs and other butterflies and bees pay us frequent visits. We’ve also planted blueberries, raspberries, red and black currants and we have tons of sunflowers every August.
- THE HOUSE -
Our house is comfortable for a large family, or for two couples or two families with children. And pets are more than welcome!
The first floor has two bedrooms, one with a queen bed, the other with a full bed and an additional twin bed. These rooms are independent but can communicate with each other as well as with a full bathroom.
The second floor has two bedrooms, with one room only accessible through the other, so this is better suited for parents and their children. The main room has a king bed, the second one is smaller with a full bed. There is also a convenient small bathroom with a sink and a toilet on this floor.
On the first floor we have a smaller more formal living-room with a television, DVD player and video games station, and a spacious open kitchen connected to a large dining / living space with a high efficiency, low particle emission wood stove (made in nearby Morrisville).
This living space is really the center of the house with lots of windows and access to the garden and a small porch in the summer. In the fall and winter the wood stove is an excellent source of heat and coziness for reading a book or preparing an elaborate meal. Most of the furniture in this room is made in nearby Newport.
Finally, a spacious mud room leads to the shed and the back of the house. The mud room connects with the living area but also leads to another bathroom with shower, toilet and sink, and our brand new Energy Star laundry machines.
WIFI internet allows for working from home (including Zoom meetings or classes) but the bandwidth is limited in this area of Vermont. It allows for streaming media on one device at a time (possibly two), like the living room TV but we also have a small collection of DVDs including Disney and Pixar. Cellphone service is extremely limited except over WIFI. We have books and toys for young children and a PS4 with games for older kids, as well as puzzles and board games.
- ACTIVITIES -
Our farm is on a quiet dirt road that allows for walks in all seasons through woods and pastures and absolutely stunning views (see pictures all taken on our property or nearby). You can either walk back to the house after a while or continue on other roads that allow you to get back through several itineraries of various length and levels of elevation, depending on the type of workout you prefer.
In the summer, we like to bike or drive to nearby Shadow Lake for swimming or kayaking The water is pristine and the lake association is very careful about preventing invasive species from contaminating the local ecosystem. There is a small but very nice public beach.
Caspian Lake is 20 minutes away by car and much bigger. It has a large public beach and is perfect for sailing or longer kayaking expeditions. You can also access Caspian lake for a fee through the private beach of the Highland Lodge.
Not far from the house is also the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, with its vast network of trails for mountain biking or cross-country skiing (it was featured in the New York Times in 2021 as one of the top destinations in the country for cross-country skiing.) It is a busy and welcoming space for beginners as well as professional athletes.
Various hiking trails in the area provide opportunities for wonderful explorations of nature: the Barr Hill Natural Area and the Mossy Trail in Greensboro are extremely easy and perfect for children whereas other trails are more challenging, such as the Mount Elmore trail that will take you up to an Alpine ecosystem overlooking the lake and a vast panorama.
Local roads are great for biking but less experienced or younger bikers will love the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail and its gentle slope.
- CULTURE -
The villages of Glover, Greensboro and Craftsbury form a very welcoming and diverse corner of Vermont where farmers, tourists, local artisans, artists and athletes cross paths at the busy general stores of Willey’s in Greensboro and the Genny in Craftsbury.
You will find the same friendly crowds again in the evening at one of the vibrant restaurants and bars of the area, such as the Highland Lodge in Greensboro, the Black Bird Bistro in Crafstbury, and Parker Pie in West Glover, which often offers live music.
We are also at the center of a true culinary paradise, with local organic produce from Pete’s Green, exceptional cheeses from Jasper Hill as well as outstanding beer from Hill Farmstead, all grown / made within 15 minutes from the house. You can also buy excellent and sustainably raised meat (beef, pork, chicken), maple syrup and other produce from neighboring and local farms. Willey's and The Genny carry excellent wines and our kitchen is fully equipped for the most ambitious cooks!
As for feeding the mind and the soul, extraordinary cultural institutions are also just a 20 minute car ride from the house:
In Greensboro, the magnificent Highland Center for the Arts features concerts, shows and exhibits.
In Glover, the world famous Bread and Puppet Theater organizes weekly outdoor summer shows with giant puppets and a strong political message (young children may be scared / not interested). Their museum is open until late fall and is definitely worth a visit.
Also not far, the intriguing Museum of Everyday Life is housed in an open barn and was featured in the New York Times in 2019. The current exhibition is about notes and to-do lists, previous ones have been about matches, locks and keys, or safety pins!
Finally, Circus Smirkus in Greensboro, the only tented traveling youth circus in the United States, offers two amazing shows in June and late August that will astonish and inspire the whole family.
- FURTHER AWAY -
If you are willing to drive a bit further (35 minutes away), the town of Hardwick offers several shopping opportunities, including an amazing bookstore and an organic co-op, and several excellent places to eat lunch or dinner. It has a small but wonderful downtown area with the Lamoille river going through it.
A bit further away in the other direction (45 min), you will be able to enjoy the town of Saint Johnsbury, with shopping and dining opportunities as well as the fascinating Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium. For dog lovers, Dog Mountain and the Dog Chapel are a must.
Stowe and Jay Peak are 1 hour away - Burke and its vast network of ski and bike trails is 40 minutes away.
Finally, if you are feeling really adventurous, Montreal is less than 2.5 hour away by car and easy to get to via nearby I-91. Perfect for a day trip or a weekend!

My family and I stayed at the farm house for a week and we absolutely loved it. My kids declared it their favorite Vermont house (we've stayed at many!). My mom's dog loved running free in the yard. So much room in the house for us to spread out and relax. We enjoyed swimming in Shadow Lake, and lots of mountain biking.
Can't wait to come back.

We very much enjoyed our extended stay at the farmhouse. It was the perfect location to explore Craftsbury, Greensboro and beyond. We rode our gravel bikes from the house and never got bored with all of the quiet roads to explore and hills to climb. The only ding is that the internet is much much slower than expected. Since we stayed for a month, we occasionally had to get online for work. The internet wouldn't support video calls or even sending small attachments in an email. I get this is rural Vermont (and vacation!), so we were patient--but I wouldn't plan to work remotely from here. Happy to come back, sans work, though!

This is a very nicely maintained 19th century farm house surrounded by long views over farms with wide open fields, reached by traveling over a few miles of back country dirt roads. If that's what you are looking for, you'll love this place. The owner is very responsive and helpful. The kitchen appliances are modern and in excellent condition, and the kitchen is well stocked. The beds are very comfortable. The stairway to the second floor bedrooms is steep and the stair steps are narrow, so might not be suitable for all. But we were very comfortable here, and had a great time.

I was impressed by the size of this house. It was also very cozy. Can't even think of any major cons. I would absolutely recommend this property for rental and would come back myself.

Overall good and exactly what we needed. Kitchen was well supplied. No complaints here! Great for a small team, as it's relatively close to the Craftsbury Outdoor Center.

We stayed there as two families with dogs- lovely space. Plenty of room. Great working kitchen. Fabulous eating table that fit everybody. Beautiful views. 15 minutes to Craftsbury Outdoor Center!

Our weekend stay was lovely. The house and property were gorgeous and the views were stunning. The hosts set up the house in such a thoughtful and detailed way it was such a treat to be there, I just wish we would have planned for longer!

Quintessential VT farmhouse, not too fancy, very liveable and cozy with plenty of space for a family gathering. The wood stove and bedding kept us more than warm enough. Joanna and Eric were incredibly thoughtful and immediately responsive to any questions. They even left us a tree stand and ornaments so that we could have a tree! Though we didn’t have a white Christmas, it was a great experience. Would love to come back in the summer to enjoy the lakes, trails, and gardens!

We booked this to go with another couple and a single and there would have been heaps of room for us all, but they had to cancel at the last minute. So the house was large for just 2 but very cosy, nicely furnished, and with a very easy and effective wood stove. There is a gorgeous view, and we saw the Milky Way very clearly one night. The house was most generously provisioned with everything we could possibly want, and the vegetable garden still had salad greens, tomatoes and kale that we were allowed to harvest: the whole trip felt as if we were living the dream in our own house in VT -- without all the worries that would actually insure. Eric and Joanna were generous and flexible and allowed us to change our dates at the last minute, even re-funding to us the difference in price.

Great stay - beautiful area. We enjoyed the fall foliage in this quirky home.

The house is very comfortable and perfectly appointed. It's an old farmhouse with the uniqueness of a house built long ago and with beams. It's beautifully maintained and the large yard with flowers and vegetables a delight.
The kitchen is well-stocked and the appliances up-to-date.
My granddaughter thought the yard was her playground. She loved it.
The beds were comfortable and the house heated as well as a wood stove in the kitchen for extra warmth. It was a perfect place for our stay!

We had a fantastic time! The house was very clean and neat. The yard and gardens were beautiful and spacious. When we had a question, the owner was very responsive. Overall, a great stay. Highly recommend this house, especially great for two families.

Beautifully maintained farmhouse on a quiet road with view of corn pasture and rolling NEK hills in background. We love this area--it is active farmland. The house is clean, well appointed with comfortable beds and nice kitchen. Eric and Joanna are some of the best rental hosts we have ever dealt with. They gave us all the information we needed and we can tell they love their house and neighborhood. We thank them for sharing that with us!

This is a lovely old Vermont farmhouse with all modern convenience. The house has lovely views of rolling hills and is close to wonderful xc skiing. The owners were fabulous to work with and helped in every way we wished.

Beautiful old house, clean and well stocked. Room layout is a little quirky but great for families with kids. Close to Craftsbury for fantastic skiing and other outdoor activities. Host was excellent, quick to answer questions and provides lots of helpful information about the area. Would definitely return in the future.

Great base, 1 hr from Stowe or Jay Peak. Awesome wood stove kept us warm in -20F temps, and Eric was super helpful with an unexpected dead car battery

The house was well set up with a well stocked kitchen. There was only 1 shower, but 2 toilets. Check in was very easy, and the overall experience and location was great!

We stayed at this beautiful home for my brothers wedding weekend and were very pleased with the property and the shops nearby. The home is well cared for (stocked and tidy and we felt very comfortable) and the hosts were accommodating and informative through the stay. Our dogs were at peace the whole time! Great find and would love to come back for a longer vacation.

We are a very large family and we were all in the NEK to celebrate my mom’s life of almost 99 years. The farmhouse is right around the corner from the cemetery where we laid her to rest. My family and close friends were able to have plenty of room and a place to relax after the gathering in West Glover.

We have rented quite a few places in the Northeast Kingdom, from East Burke to Lyndon to Barton, but this was by far our favorite find. It’s even more idyllic than the beautiful photos suggest. We enjoyed the sunsets on our evening dog walks, and we had a wonderful time exploring the area. Shadow Lake is within biking distance, and we also drove to Lakes Caspian and Willoughby, where we spent the afternoon paddle boarding. On other days, we biked at Kingdom Trails and even made a day trip to Burlington.
Most nights, we dined at home in order to enjoy the sunsets and wildflowers, but we had some great dinners out as well, most notably at the Blackbird Bistro in Craftsbury and The Gap in Westmore, near Lake Willoughby.
Eric and Joanna were beyond hospitable, encouraging us to harvest fresh veggies from their garden, which we did. They also left us some welcome treats, for us and for our dogs. They offered lots of suggestions and were communicative and helpful.
The front porch swing offers a panoramic Green Mountain vista; the picnic table out back is a peaceful spot for admiring the garden.
We also recommend the General Store in Craftsbury and the quaint village of Hardwick.
