We stayed for just one night to expierence the best this ryokan had to offer and man did it exceed all our expectations. To truly know, book one of their 4 suites. The #500 rooms. Massive rooms with authentic tatami mats, personal and private onsen that is open air facing the beautiful lake, out of this world seasonal dinner/breakfast course. The area is secluded enough to be quiet but not far from the local town. Cute and quaint souvenir shop. Oh and the bidet toilet is the best we've ever seen. Lastly, the staff is extremely accommodating, friendly, and helpful. They know english very well too. They have a shuttle that does pick up and drop off from Ogotoonsen Station so skip the taxi and call the resort when you get there. If you have cell service there is a free cell phone that you can use to call the resort. Theres also a guide of numbers for all the resorts in the area. To wrap up, book a night at this ryokan you will not regret treating yourself to a time of lavish luxury.

The beef sashimi was the BEST thing we had our entire time in Japan. The traditional food were also very good while still having options for those who wanted more modern meals

The staff was extremely friendly, and they were also professional and clear about the guidelines for the onsen and dinner expectations. The food was incredible, the private bath was soothing. And the area is wonderful. Lake Biwa is a special place.

Top notch ryokan, highly recommended.
Stayed in a Japanese style room, including 2 meals per day, and with shuttle service from the ryokan to the train station.
Includes an onsen and massage service as well.
The room was very spacious, clean and comfortable.
The meals delicious.
The staff extremely friendly and helpful.
Very nice experience while in Kyoto.

The staff and private onsen were top-notch, no comparison. The meal provided was interesting. We were hoping that there was a way to change our first night’s meal choice prior to our stay instead of the business defaulting to the traditional Japanese meal on the first night of our stay. After messaging on Expedia, they would not let us change the meal. Other than that, the service provided by the staff is second to none and we wouldn’t trade our stay with Biwako Hanakaido for anything.

This beautiful, well-run hotel makes you feel very special. We were greeted warmly on arrival, given peach tea and walked through the hotel’s spa protocol. Since they are currently doing work on parts of the spa (this was no problem, and there was no noise).
The onsite onsen is absolutely beautiful— a deep pond in a (part) bamboo forest, relaxing and piping hot.
The dinner and breakfast are extravagant, delicious, and gorgeously presented.
The staff is so very kind and gracious. They go far out of their way to make you feel at home. We speak no Japanese except “good morning” and the staff spoke enough English to help us in every way.
This was my first trip ever to Japan, let alone an onsen, and this hotel made it a delightful experience!

Great experience of a traditional ryokan. Super friendly staff, and a kids friendly place. As a foreigner you have to be prepared to eat fish and miso soup with tofu for breakfast.

The shuttle to pickup/drop off to and from Ogoto Onsen Station was great; otherwise, it would be a 10 minutes walk with luggage! Our tatami room was very traditional and offered a great view of the lake. Only downside is no blackout curtain so the room is nice and BRIGHT at 6 o'clock in the morning! The 10-course (I think) dinner was interesting and filling; it took us 2 1/2 hours to finish. One note though, the massage was not very pleasant but then again, the appointment was 10pm so I wasn't expecting a great masseuse at that time. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience.

This is a small onsen ryokan with limited amenities, compared to other ones we stayed before. The front desk staffs are very friendly and professional. The check in process was amazing! We were seated at the cafe enjoying tea and sweets while the staff explained the info to us. We were staying in the Nakagawa special room on the premium floor. Although the room is a bit small, the Nakagawa wooden furnitures/decorations are so unique and beautiful. The room has an open air onsen bath so we don’t have to go to the public one. However, the view is quite far from the lake and it’s not much to see. We had our dinners at the Japanese private dinning room overlooking the beautiful zen garden. Food was good and service was amazing. The lobby cafe offers really tasty cakes, which it’s a must-have. We also tried the massage, which was surprisingly good! Overall, We had a very good time staying in this onsen Ryokan.

Hotel is nice and clean.
Two included meals are authentic and delicious, and they provided different sets (both breakfast and dinner) in our two days stay.
Service is outstanding. All their staffs are kind, patient, and get problems solved. I couldn’t find better service anywhere else.

Just 40 mins away from osaka by train. Very convenient. Food was exceptional at the two nights Kaiseki course we had. The soba resto at the hotel is also a most try. Noodles were prepared by the owner w limited portion everyday so must book. A little bit disappointed with the open air bath in the room as it’s a bit small

The staff were lovely. We paid for private onsen with a massage after, highly recommend.
Dinner was fun and tasty, beautiful presentation.
Views from the room were stunning, the open air bath photos are a bit misleading, it's VERY small and deep so no view can be appreciated from the tub.
The bed was ok, certainly more comfortable than a mat (I presume) but the pillows were atrocious, I suppose they are traditional with the buckwheat filling but made for a rough sleep.
Loved hanging out in the robes and was a great last night in Japan for my partner and I

It is a beautiful resort, with an aged but quaint look and feel. There is a private spa which can be booked so your group of friends can share a bath. Food is very exquisite, and traditional Japanese ryokan style.

Great stay, staff was extremely friendly. The place itself is dated but they are renovating. Highly recommend the private onsen

Exceptional services and hospitality. We had a very good experience staying here and would definitely come back again. Our room had a perfect view facing Biwako and the food was amazing.

Top service and room facilities for an Onsen hotel. The breakfast and dinner were delicious. We tried both of their private and public Onsen and they were both good. The hotel even ring me from Japan to confirm my arrival time at the train station so they can arrange a shuttle bus for pickup.

It was amazing! It was my first time at a ryokan and it was better than anything I have ever imagined. Attentative staff, tons of services (karaoke included) and just the perfect atmosphere. Can't wait to come back!

We were on the way from Kansai to Kanazawa and spent a night in this hotel. It is in a quiet location with good setting. Plenty of parking space.
The staffs are very welcoming. The room is clean and spotless. There are two public bath areas which are swapped for men and ladies everyday so we can have a feel in both areas.
The breakfast and dinner are good and satisfying. Would recommend this hotel when traveling in this area.

The staff was so kind and spoke amazing English. Our traditional room had a great view of the lake and an open air bath. Honestly I found the floor mat beds to be uncomfortable. The yukata was a cool experience though. The Onsen baths were nice, though we struggled a bit to fully relax because it there are a lot of rules and customs involved, like washing yourself beforehand in the little stalls, where to put your towel, etc. Even though we read up a bunch, it was still a bit stressful to make sure we weren’t doing anything wrong. The hot springs water is so hot you can’t really stay long. We did enjoy a private bath in the late evening before going to bed. Perhaps starting in the private bath would’ve helped us feel more at ease in the public. I’m a bit surprised so many people have said the food was amazing. While beautifully presented, the Kaiseki meal was so far out of our Western palate comfort zone, we honestly could barely eat half of it. And we were so afraid to be rude by not eating the meal, so it was again quite stressful. I had selected the Omi beef meal option because my husband doesn’t really like fish. I didn’t realize that the rest of the courses would be fish. We probably should have told them before, but we didn’t know. We skipped breakfast because we were so scared off by the dinner. If you’re not adventurous, I would recommend skipping the Kaiseki meal and eating at the other restaurant that is more western-friendly. Or maybe worry less than we did.
