The area was not what we expected. We worried about safety in the area as many shut store fronts and graffiti.
We had a double room with a terrace. The mattress and pillows were terrible. I slept with the rough towel as my pillow.Bathroom was generally ok. The kitchenette not really helpful. Centrally located for Plaza Independencia, Mercado and the rambla.
Their saving grace and our escape is the American Bar.
The reception staff were helpful though not all spoke English. Surely a minimum requirement for hotel reception staff?
We hated having to book a time for breakfast. When on vacation one wants to have breakfast when one is ready.

Nice, basic hotel. Staff were professional, but didn’t make extra effort to be friendly or helpful. Absolutely no issues, to be clear but a little “sparkle” goes a long way in hospitality. The area was quite noisy, even with window shut and latched, but that can be expected in urban areas. In house restaurant and bar was sufficent, but hours and menu were limited and it was confusing on seating/service/ordering expectations.

The hotel is very pleasantly situated in the downtown area of Montevideo. It is clean, modern and very comfortable. The staff all provided a high level of customer service, although language barriers were sometimes an issue.- but in fairness their English was much better than my Spanish. I would have been very satisfied with the hotel and everything about it. However the stay was ruined by the nearby club whcih oipens from 11.00pm to 5.30am. Throughout the night, the noise of the excessively loud and relentless music, plus the noise of the customers who were partying thoughout the night made sleep impossible.

Everything was great. I had to check out early traveling to the north of the country so I didn't spend much time there. Great breakfast

The photos do not accurately reflect the rooms, especially the bathrooms. The photos are old and not updated. We were disappointed with the condition of the rooms and bathroom compared to the photos.

The hotel is perfectly situated nearby to historic and cultural attractions, but far enough away from the port to avoid the mass of cruise ship passengers. The staff were all very kind and helpful with questions, taxis, etc. the view from the rooftop is also quite nice.

Close to the port.

Quaint and coveniently located boutique hotel within walking distance of the main public areas and the Palacio Salvo. Breakfast was good as was the stir fry at the restaurant. Staff were pleasant and helpful.
My only complaint is that my top floor room had a very nice patio area but the chairs were of poor and flimsy quality. The deck could also use a table.

This was my fourth stay at Smart over the past five years. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Great location. Smart describes the design and overall value. I will return soon.

The staff was great very helpful. The breakfast excellent. The only point to comment was that the mattress wasn’t comfortable and on the sides was extremely used/ unleveled

The first room was supposed to be a king size bed, but was two twins pushed together... which sucks... they gave me a room with a balcony without a couch and a queen size bed... it was an upgrade, but I would have preferred a king bed with a couch to sit on.... breakfast on the property is reasonably priced for Montevideo and pretty decent... walls are thin, and the elevator makes noise that you can hear in your room... the rooms are clean and modern with English language channels... I've mixed feelings about my stay but location and price make it a decent stay and the staff was nice despite not being able to get me my desired room

Very central. Breakfast staff could be a tiny bit more polite. It makes a difference.

Very friendly and helpful desk staff! We had a nice room with a view and loved the convenience of the small well- designed kitchen for snacks. Restaurant was good for included breakfast and also for a meal or a drink. Good location for exploring the old town but also convenient to shopping district. Shower floor emphasizes non-skid over whiteness so it appears grubby even when clean. Very comfortable bed and heat pump keeps room nice temperature. Extremely quiet and pleasant.

Good stay, nice area and good breakfast. The “double bed” was actually 2 singles pushed together and it dipped so didn’t have the best sleep but otherwise great hotel and stay.

We had a beautiful corner room with lots of windows. The bed and bathroom were great and we had a small fridge as well as a desk. There were some restaurants around the area, but it was downtown and very quiet on the weekend with lots of places closed Sunday. Fortunately the hotel restaurant was open Sunday night.

The staff member (Mateus) that dealt with me spoke very good English and was very helpful with local information. The premises were modern and nice, the immediate surrounding area was safe but a little run down, only a few blocks to the waterfront or large central square.

The hotel was ok. The area around the hotel was really dirty and did not feel safe.

This is a decent hotel for a business trip or short stay in the city. I needed overnight accommodations—arrive at lunch, get dinner with colleagues, sleep, attend a conference, and fly out the next day. This fits the bill nicely. I arrived very early, hoping to drop bags at the hotel until check-in, but they called housekeeping to prepare a room and had me set up in under 10 minutes. The front desk staff spoke English, but it's helpful (and courteous) if you can ask for things and carry on a brief conversation in Spanish. (And I'm looking at you, America.)
The room itself is more than I expected. It's a good size, with a microwave and mini-fridge stocked with a few courtesy items. A small closet contains a safe for valuables. There's a high table in the kitchen/common space, or a long, narrow desk along one wall where you can work. WiFi is free and has decent speed and bandwidth. The bed is soft and comfortable, with good linens. A couch and coffee table complete the room.
The hotel is in a "bad part" of Montevideo. Take that as you will—the "bad" part of Montevideo is better than "average" parts of many cities. There is some trash and a few homeless in the area, but it's a 2 block walk from nicer areas, grocery, & shopping. Use reasonable caution while walking alone, and perhaps consider a car at night or if you're a single female.

The towels in the bathroom had large, what seemed like ink, blotches. While not necessarily unhygenic, it isnt something I expected to see in a good quality hotel and left me asking if it was clean. The gym seemed to be a few old pieces of equipment in a unused bedroom. Similarily the terrace seems to be part of an unused room. Other than that, the room was good and rematively updated although the kitchen area would have benefited from a microwave. The cafe on the ground floor served good quality food but the breakfast was limited even if the food that was there was good. The area is centrally located and a short work from all fhe main sights, shoppening areas etc.
