The non-smoking rooms smelled like smoke. There were bugs in our air-conditioning unit. The bathtub looked disgusting and didn't have a drain cover. Whenever we flushed the toilet, nothing would happen initially and then the tub would gurgle as in flushed.
The staff was courteous, and breakfast was as expected.

Now that I have a kid in college in the area, I will be visiting regularly but I will take pains not to use this hotel again. It feels run down and plumbing on the 8th floor was so bad that the toilet barely flushed. We had to sheepishly ask for a plunger multiple times during our one night stay just to handle a tiny bit of toilet paper. And it was clear we weren’t alone as several other rooms had plungers wrapped in garbage bags outside their rooms too.
The only plus is that the staff was very polite and helpful. Still, I would not stay here again and with so many other options in the area, I won’t.

Good hotel with basic amenities. Staff not overly friendly. Our room had a view of a vent and the roof, not too nice. Breakfast was a good set up with alot of choices. Nice central location to different stores and restaurants. The only bad thing I can say is that the room we stayed in smelled very musty like a dirty wet carpet/ dog.

I would not recommend this hotel. I know you get what you pay for, but it’s a little dingy. Thankfully was given a 2 queen bed room, because the first mattress I tried had a lump in it. There were thermostat problems as well.
The staff was not very welcoming. The check in clerk literally grunted at me.
But, it’s one of only a few options near UMass and Amherst C. So, it’s pretty clear they don’t care.

The staff were very nice, the hotel was in need of updating but it was clean, the room smelled of disinfectant, parking was plentiful, breakfast was not so great but fine for our purposes - overall an average stay but not sure I would stay again based on the price paid and condition of the hotel

This is a tired hotel. Bathtubs need to be updated. Sliding doors to the porch should lock. Hallways had an odor. Paid good money since it was graduation weekend, but this hotel is overpriced at normal pricing

The initial interaction was very welcoming and after finding our room had not been 100% cleaned the clerk cheerfully moved us to another room. Appreciated the laminate floor instead of the usual carpet and was satisfied with all aspects of the stay. The free breakfast was a little more than continental and it was very clean. By the way the water pressure is so good it could blow you out of the shower and it was plenty hot.

Dog-friendly room with sliding glass door leading right outside to grassy area behind hotel. It makes dog walking easier. Free breakfast was decent.

Room smelled awful, chunky stain of unknown pink substance on the one arm chair in room. Toilet handle broken, sink didn’t drain (may have been source of foul smell). Dirty bandaid on floor of bathroom and someone’s used press-on nails under bedside table.

Ample parking, the check in was smooth, and it was easy to find our room, but once we got in, we were hit in the face with what smelled like very stale cigarettes attempted to be covered by Febreze or something. It looked like it hasn't been updated since the 70s, the beds were springy and firm, the shower pressure was mid, and the rust stains on the sink looked like a poop smear. We also saw ants in the bathroom, and you had to hold the toilet handle down for 15 seconds to flush. The light switches were like old kitchen timers, and not all of them worked. Walls are not sound proof, so we awoke to the dulcet tones of a family cursing at their toddler to put his f***** shoes on at 6am. Continental breakfast was bare minimum expectation, and the boxed milk was sour. Grabbed a banana to-go just to get out of there.

Shower pressure was low. Pre-billing my debit card for an extra two days that weren't requested was very confusing and front desk wasn't sure what happened and couldn't explain it to me. Only to say it would work out after a few days. Which it did..but was a big inconvenience to me. So some of my money was tied up in a pending area needlessly.

I had a lovely stay at Howard Johnson's last night. The check-in process was quick and easy. The room was large and well furnished. My bed was humongous and comfortable, everything was very clean, and breakfast was adequate. Some parts of the hotel could use a bit of an update (carpeting, bathrooms, etc.) It's still in good condition, perfectly livable. Super bright white bed linens and towels made a positive impression. I found the iron and the hair dryer very useful.
My favorite part however was the location. Howard Johnson is located very close to downtown Amherst, UMass, and shopping. Lots of popular stores, such as Marshalls, Staples, Target, Michaels, Dick's, etc. are a minute away. Among them are all the grocery places, fast food places, and other conveniences. Although the hotel is close to the main road, it was quiet, peaceful, and very restful. I enjoyed my stay very much.

carpet worn thin, splices wires not in a junction box at the heater, lamp switch would not turn off or on- to operate the lamp one had to pug the cord in, to turn it off one had to unplug it.

Dirty sheets. Stained. This place is dated and should be torn down and rebuilt. It's cheap, but if you pay for a dump, that's what you will get.

The carpets throughout the hotel and in our room appeared to be filthy. Our bathtub was discolored (yellow) and had chipped paint; it was basically unusable.

The property is run down. It was clean and beds were comfy, but our toilet wouldn’t flush at all. No plugs/charging units next to bed.
Parking lot has potholes and can’t see where parking spaces are out front. I just thought someone randomly parked in the middle of the roadway.

Person who checked me in was very friendly and courteous. Check-in was smooth and quick. Room is clean and quiet.

Rooms are in good shape and the staff is friendly. The only issue with my room was a couple of ceiling tiles had obvious water stains (I was on the top floor).

Room smelled like smoke, the door didn't close and we had to SLAM it to get it to close. Coffee machine spit the coffee across the room, coffee packets were ripped inside and unusable, tub was chipped, balcony was filthy, phone message light blinked all night and front desk couldn't fix, no wifi provided, water in shower didn't stay hot. what a horror. I've requested a full refund.

A decent value. When we arrived there was a dehumidifier running in the bathroom and the toilet was running for hours before stopping on its own. The room was appointed nicely and the bed was comfortable. The staff was welcoming and polite. It’s a three star facility at a three star price.

I get that they may have been understaffed for Christmas but in the week we stayed there not once did they come to clean the room or give us new towels or toilet paper, we had to go to the desk and ask for it. We did not leave a tip.
