This is a very basic hotel. The hotel room was clean but the stairs leading up to it could have done with a good hoover.
1.5
Rooms are newly refurbished were clean and comfortable. Heating appeared to be on a timer therefore until the radiators came on due to the weather room was cold. Nobody replenished the room after first night stay had to ask for items by the bar and at first was advised I would not be served as I was standing in the wrong place. When I then explained I was staying upstairs I was served with items required once pub guest completed their order. Breakfast was very poor, only the choice of a full English, a breakfast muffin or pancakes from the hot food. There were basic cereals available. In relation to the full English all items were overcooked, bacon was hard, mushrooms were annihilated not sure what had happened to the hash brown and it was all either cold or lukewarm. Pancakes were just 3 small pancakes with a scattering of blue berries and a strawberry cut up with a small sauce size dish of yoghurt. Considering the second night cost almost 3 times the cost of the first night this was very disappointing, so much so that we went out for breakfast on Saturday morning. The pub plays music until very late gone midnight considering the rooms are above there is no way of getting away from the noise of the music or pub guests congregating outside the front doors.

Everything was great. However, the hair dryer supplied had seen better days.

Must have been cool at one time, now just old and tired looking. Filthy stairwell, tiny room, light and fan in bathroom wouldn’t turn off, shower temperature set to parboil. Just a bit rubbish, all in all.
2.0
Really good stay. Super comfy bed. Very good shower, just a little criticism, the towels were not very big and were not soft and fluffy.
Handy spot for the train station and the AO Arena
3.0
Nice room, but loud from pub below & ventilation system outside.

Our room was lovely and the hotel was very conveniently located. The staff was absolutely wonderful!! The breakfasts were amazing, the pub was one of our favorites in Manchester.
1.0
A deathly smell in the bathroom that we complained about and then after looking on the reviews it appears that someone else complained about this as well. Clearly they do not care about that issue because they pretended to not know about it and sent up maintenance that just recommended keeping the bathroom door closed. Horrible horrible experience. Don't recommend

The room was spacious, clean and comfortable

Brilliant stay, the hotel and pub are clean and have everything needed, staff are friendly and willing to help.
4.0
Lovely room. Nice bar. Unfortunately though at breakfast the chef was screaming and swearing very loudly for all diners to hear. Apart from that the staff were very nice and accommodating throughout our stay. Breakfast was lovely despite the kitchen drama. Very handy location for the arena/ different bars/restaurants and shopping.
2.5
Lovely little hotel! Easy check in and out, staff were really friendly also. Room was clean and perfect for an overnight stay in the city
3.0
The rooms are tiny, and ours had dust coating everything. There was a nasty smell coming out of the bathroom, we had to keep the fan running the entire time we were in the room.
One of the staff was very friendly at breakfast, but blasted the volume of the morning TV shows. Everyone else could barely be bothered to help us.
It was annoying to have to go down and up 2 flights of steep stairs to get a hair dryer, there should be one in every room.
All the communications (signs and instructions) to guests were very unwelcoming - mostly about extra charges (of which there were many possibilities) rather than amenities (which were few). To be charged a 3 GBP deposit for a second key card on a double occupancy room is really stingy.
The doors are heavy and tightly sprung, so guests coming in late at night can't help but announce their arrival with banging that can be heard throughout the floor.
The included breakfast was ok. but again all about the extra charges and rules.

This is a lovely place to stay staff really friendly and welcoming.
Good breakfasts.

From start to finish we thoroughly enjoyed our 2 night stay. All the staff were very friendly and professional, breakfast was very nice. Had a meal in the evening which was also very good.
We will definitely be returning as it was a home from home.

Excellent little hotel, room was compact but perfect for us, big tv and modern bathroom. Food was excellt and the breakfast was perfect we paid the extra £2 to make it large and it was worth it

It's above a busy pub. You actually have to queue at the bar to check in.
Doesn't appear to be any instructions on how to change the heating.
The walls are paper thin, worse than any hotel or B&B I've known. It didn't help that all the other residents on my floor were a hen party who arrived back at 4am, and who strangely arose at 8am full of beans.

The property is really nice, new and well cleaned. The staff was nice and friendly. The hotel is very close to the city centre and Victoria Station. The breakfast was good.
5.0
Great location, great staff, lovely room and bathroom. If you are a light sleeper, bring ear plugs since the hotel is next to a busy junction and above a pub.
3.0
The room was a little small for 2 people, couldn’t manoeuvre around the bed. No running water in the morning so couldn’t shower.

Very pleased with my night’s stay here - good check-in, drinks/food available and breakfast decent too. Inexpensive and good value for money.
2.5
Great place to stay, convenient for center but the street was quiet. I had to work from there this morning and WIFI worked well. Nice friendly staff and they even extended check out a little to help me finish my conference call.

The staff were super friendly and happy to help , check in was super fast we got to are room and unfortunately the cleaners hadn't emptyed the bin from previous guests it was full and almost overflowing, we decided to have a later check out the day after , even with a do not disturb on the door handle the cleaners came into are room lucky we was fully clothed laying on the bed you are on a busy main road so please be mindful when booking if your a light sleeper make sure you close your windows, room is spacious bed was comfortable, your own heating thermostat for your room , at the bar guests get 15% off food and drink, in all I would stay at this hotel again easy to get to

Would definitely recommend.

Very comfortable rooms if a little noisy at times

A really lovely refurbishment and the staff are utterly fantastic! They are so friendly and welcoming - a massive asset! The rooms are spacious, clean and fresh. Lots of really nice touches, the beds are comfy and the hotel is centrally located. I was really happy with the bathroom in particular - this was a great size which is not always the case for a city centre hotel.
Two things to be aware of...neither are things the owners have control over. Just things for visitors to be aware of.
The first is that it's an older building so the stairs up to the rooms are a little bit steep. I should have realised this given the age and historic nature of the overall property but that was a bit of a trial at times because I have weak joints. I'd still stay there again because it's lovely when you get to the room! But I would just say to be aware of that.
The second is that it's on a busy road so can be noisy. This is the trade off for staying centrally so is to be expected. And I found that being on 2nd floor reduced the noise. So next time I'd like to try a 1st floor room to see if the noise is significant there as this might be a way to manage the stairs.
I would definitely stay here again. Thanks for making me so welcome.

Me my Brother and Best Friend stayed here on the 09/06/23 was really impressed got 20% off at the bar for staying at the hotel rooms where definitely value for money very clean and tvs with everything YouTube Netflix etc toilets where clean in the room and good friendly staff would definitely re book in the future 10min walk in to the city centre

Nice little hotel with large spacious rooms. Very comfy beds and I like the modern look of the room. The staff was very nice, friendly and welcoming. The only downside was I didn't get to enjoy the breakfast since it's served from 8 am and had to catch an early train. I did try and order breakfast but it was taking too long and I was running late. Just a friendly feedback here and have breakfast start earlier so guests can have time to eat and not be rushed.

The rooms and the breakfast have received a facelift.
Nice staff.

Second time staying and enjoyed my stay again , the most comfortable bed so I had a really good night's sleep and a good breakfast- highly recommended

In business, I was always told that the best way to impress your superior is to exceed their expectations; turns out that the same thing can be said about how to impress a customer, exceed their expectations, which is exactly what our stay at the Black Lion managed to achieve.
Our room was spotless, every single member of staff were a pleasure to deal with and the complementary breakfast was delicious - I had to double, if not triple check that the breakfast was actually complementary.
2.0
It was spotlessly clean upon arrival, however our room didn’t have much of a clean during our stay. There were marks on the bathroom sink that were there for the full three days as well as some bits on the carpet in the bedroom that didn’t get hoovered. When we pulled back the quilt to get in bed, the bottom sheet was rumpled and had bits on it. However, these were very minor observations and we would definitely return. There were fresh towels and toiletries daily which was not really necessary, most hotels now only replace towels if you indicate that you require so by placing the used ones on the floor in the shower.
The location was excellent for the centre of Manchester and within walking distance of most of the sights.
The breakfast was plentiful and excellent each morning.

Nice hotel but lots of noise from pub and late-arriving guests on a saturday night meant very disturbed sleep.

Easy check-in friendly staff nice warm room ,comfy bed and a good TV plus a great location near to Victoria station

Absolutely love our stays here, staff very friendly and welcoming, breakfast is delicious always

I stayed on the second floor and found the place to be very quite despite a loud pub quiz going on the ground floor. The room was nicely decorated and the bathroom was spotless. The room was nicely warm when we got in. It was also not too big but ok. A couple selection of coffees and teas that we drink at home everyday were on. Slept well, no sound from outside or next rooms. The complimentary breakfast was one of the best I've had so far. From the breakfast menu I chose a full english which had nice crispy bacon, heavenly hash browns, mouthwatering succulent sausages, a scrumptious egg, tasty beans, flavoursome mushrooms and 2 slices of toast. For the price of the room, it was well worth it. If I could suggest 1 improvement needed, the pillows. The ones in our room looked tired and underfilled.

This place is great value and ideally located. It is above a pub though and is very noisy.
