Quick history of "Old City". It occupies only a few linear blocks near the railroad on the northeastern corner of downtown Knoxville. It once contained the region's highest density of saloons. During the same era and for longer it was the city's wholesale food district. With flour and coffee factories which became famous. It was also the meatpacking district with a stockyard that attracted area cattlemen. Architecturally, it's Knoxville's best preserved remnant of one particular era, when the city was booming and building, especially down by the railroad.
The term "Old City" was first used to describe the area around 1980. Previous decades other colorful names included - Irish Town, Cripple Creek, The Bowery, Gunter's Flats and the Bottom. White Lily Flour and JFG Coffee are most famous industries from this area. Stories of Outlaw "Kid Curry" & Buffalo Bill have originated from the era of saloons.
In addition to being cosmopolitan, Knoxville has maintained its wilderness and created beautiful city parks. Getting out in nature is as easy as going to a festival, art gallery, or concert. For example, you can visit the Knoxville Urban Wilderness just three miles away from Downtown. This area has 1,000 acres of forest including 10 parks, four civil war sites, and over 50 miles of trails.
Downtown Knoxville is at the heart of the city’s cultural scene. There are galleries, museums, theaters, and historic landmarks throughout the neighborhood. You can go to the World’s Fair Park, which hosts events like the annual International Food Festival. The park also includes Knoxville’s iconic Sunsphere, as well as the Knoxville Museum of Art. There’s also a fun playground and a large fountain for kids to splash in.
If you enjoy going to concerts or plays, you might want to visit the historic Bijou Theatre, too. Built in 1909 as an addition to Knoxville’s first hotel, the theater has recently been rediscovered and renovated. It’s now a premier place to watch concerts, Broadway plays, and other shows in Knoxville.
Prefer movies instead? Downtown Knoxville has a couple of excellent movie theaters just a block away from each other. The Tennessee Theater is the oldest, going back to 1928. It has a gorgeous interior with French-style chandeliers, Italian terrazzo flooring, and Spanish-Moorish architecture. When it was first opened, it was called “the South’s most beautiful theater,” and it’s still a classy place to watch movies and concerts.
For more modern options, though, you can just walk over to Regal Cinemas. Both are surrounded by cool shops and delicious places to eat so you won’t be bored if your movie starts later. There’s also a beautiful park across the street—perfect for relaxing with friends, family, or a romantic date
Whether you are an avid sports fan, an outdoor adventurer, or both, there’s plenty to do in Knoxville. Art lovers can check out First Fridays in Downtown Knoxville where food, art, and music create the perfect night out.
Sports fans can rejoice thanks to Knoxville being a college town there are year-round sports events in Knoxville such as football, ice hockey, women’s roller derby, and more! Families can take the kids to the Knoxville Zoo or spend a Saturday exploring with Navitat Canopy Adventures—a tree-based adventure park.

Very well appointed, comfortable stay. The owner has this place in great shape and obviously takes pride in renting it. Great communication as well. Parking is a pain but overall very much worth the stay.
4.5
Communication with owner is easy and super efficient. Apartment loft is clean, charming and eclectic in style. Love when old buildings are repurposed in such a fun way. This is our second time staying here in less than 3 months. Will likely stay again if available.
4.5
We loved the apartment. The master bed/bath/extra room were charming in the loft above. We liked the train sounds outside….reminded one of us of the town where we grew up.
There is a bit of a tobacco smell, although the loft is non-smoking. Host offered to reimburse us for Fabreze if the odor over-powered, but we were fine without it.
Great location with bars and restaurants and some cute shopping nearby. Best parking requires a daily rate of $25, but there is free parking a reasonable walk away. We would definitely consider staying here again.
4.5
Great property, loved the location. 10:00 check out is a little early.
4.5
Can't beat the location. The apartment is within easy walking distance of everything. It has a generous amount of starter supplies. The bed is comfortable. The parking is confusing. You will be ticketed if parked in the "residents' lot next to the entrance, the connected lot is $20 a night. Free parking is a few blocks away under a highway bridge. The full bath upstairs needed clean bath rugs. Hot water is tepid & takes a long time to get to the upstairs bath & shower. The thermostat needs replacing. It's in a closet with a nonworking screen & difficult to change temperatures. The apartment needs updating.
4.5
The property is lovely, clean and well stocked! Everything was easy about our stay, except for the stairs for these old bones. The apartment is walkable to all downtown shops and restaurants. We had a small dog with us and there were plenty of dog friendly areas. One downside is the number of homeless - sad, and some were sketchy. But this is not uncommon in city areas. We would definitely stay here again, and highly recommend it!
4.5
Great apartment — clean, roomy and well-appointed. King sized bed was comfortable. Perfect location — within walking distance to Market Square, several excellent restaurants, bars and multiple breweries. Host was very responsive, and provided great restaurant recommendations. Easy check-in and check-out. Highly recommend, and would love to stay here again during our next trip to Knoxville!
4.5
This place is super cozy and the layout is so cute!! You’re right smack in the middle of anything you would want to do for entertainment and food. We will definitely be back!
4.5
We only booked one night as we were just passing through. But after getting there I would have loved to stay longer. The loft was super clean and well presented. Also very quiet and private. Loved it!
4.5
Cute place, responsive owners, and easy to enjoy Knoxville from!
4.5
We are locals who wanted to stay downtown to celebrate our anniversary. This place was great. Great amenities and comfortable. We were slightly worried as the neighbors below seemed to be having a party, as it was loud. However, because of the setup of this condo, with the bedroom in the loft, we didn’t hear a thing once we went upstairs. To me, this was the perfect downtown location. Highly recommend.
4.5
Had a great stay. Everything as described. A little hard to find but it all worked out.
4.5
Comfortable, extensively decorated accommodations so handy to downtown Knoxville. Highly recommended!
