You come in through a private front door on Chapel Street and down into its calm spacious interiors. If space and luxury touches in the heart of historic Penzance is what you are after, then Hypatia Apartment will certainly fit the bill.
Hypatia Apartment is perfectly located to explore Penzance. It is a town full of hidden charms from the gardens, walks, ancient sites and foodie delights to the sea water lido with geothermally heated pool. The promenade extends to connect with Marazion, Newlyn and Mousehole which are all within walking distance.
LOCATION
Located in the famous Chapel Street, right in the heart of the oldest part of Penzance, Hypatia Apartment is a short stroll to the harbour and seafront. The best local shops, galleries, bars, pubs and restaurants are right on your doorstep. The oldest pub in Penzance, The Turks Head, dating from 1233, is 100 metres down the street. Have a drink or a meal here and you’ll be stepping back in history, enjoying the same public house as pirates and smugglers did 750 years ago.
Penzance is the gateway to the Land’s End peninsula and in the far west of Cornwall nothing is far away. The fishing harbour of Newlyn is 20 minutes’ walk along the seafront promenade, and the quaint village of Mousehole is only a 10 minutes’ drive away. Marazion, with the famous St. Michael’s Mount, is easy to walk or drive to. St. Ives is easily reached using the scenic rail line from Penzance station. Sennen Cove, The Minack Theatre in Porthcurno, and The Cornish Mining World Heritage Site on the north coast, are all an easy drive away. Many film locations of Winston Graham’s Poldark books are in the area and part of the German TV Rosamunde Pilcher series was filmed right outside the door in Chapel Street.
HISTORY
Hypatia Apartment is situated in The Regent, which dates back more than 400 years and it is one of the oldest buildings in Penzance. It would have been one of the beautiful houses on Lady Street (now Chapel Street), first admired and then destroyed and burned in the Spanish sacking of Penzance in 1595. Subsequently it was rebuilt as a fine residence, to which a new frontage in the Palladian-style was added in the second half of the 18th century on the Chapel Street side of the building. The original frontage of the building had been in Custom House Lane, off Chapel Street, to the right of The Regent, you can still see where the original entrance was which is now a Palladian-style window. Custom House Lane was originally designated as the New Street Slip, running parallel to the Abbey Slip at the next left turning from the apartment by The Admiral Benbow pub.
The earliest known owners (1707) were the families of Buller of Devon and Shillingham of Cornwall. It was the Batten family home (merchants in timber and coal) for the majority of the 19th century until it was sold in 1861 to Mr John Coulson, another Penzance merchant and property owner living on the same street. Latterly it became Perrow’s Temperance Hotel and a staging post, before having a large number of commercial and residential uses in the 20th century.

The open plan living area really has the wow factor. It’s a big space with stunning flagstone floors and French doors out to the patio. A huge squidgy sofa, armchair and captain’s chair are perfect for lounging. A large Smart TV with built-in ceiling speakers will keep you entertained. It is open plan with the well-appointed kitchen and dining area.
COOKING & EATING

There’s a large breakfast island bar and the social dining area has a table which can comfortably seat 6. There is a double electric built-in oven and induction hob, microwave cooker, toaster, dishwasher, and fridge-freezer.

Don't be fooled by the exterior appearance, this place is fantastic. A great deal of thought has gone into renovating and decorating this apartment. Very spacious and has everything you could possibly need at your finger tips. The owners should be proud of what they have achieved. All this and a great position in the town.
