Located in the southernmost region of Croatia, Konavle is often referred to as the “Konavle Valley” but it is much more than a valley. Bordering Bosnia-Hercegovina to the east and Montenegro to the south, it covers approximately 125 square miles and has a population of around 10,000 people. Some 30 villages and hamlets are dotted around the region, some with only two or three houses.
Konavle is stunningly beautiful. One third of the region is forest, mostly pines and cypresses. The valleys are full of vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees including tangerines, figs and mulberries.
There are two main rivers, the Ljuta and the Konavocica and water mills were important at one time. Some have been preserved to show visitors about past times.
And it is these past times that make Konavle so distinct today. While just a 35 minute drive from famous Dubrovnik (depending on where you are in Konavle) the region has retained its old traditions and customs with not a cocktail bar in sight! This is the place to go for a truly relaxing time in beautiful countryside yet with the fabulous Adriatic sea just a short drive away.
One of the most fascinating pieces of heritage is the story of the silkworm. These were bred in the Konavle region and local women used to look after them by having them on cloth pouches on their chest thereby ensuring their safety. The fine threads of silk that they produced were used in traditional costumes which are still worn today by some village people. A visit on Sunday morning (0930-12) to Cilipi village is a good idea where you can see traditional folk dancing, local dress take a look at the ethnographic museum there and try some local food and drink. The patterns and use of silk have been extended in modern times and can now be found in purses table mats and even ball gowns – these can be bought in many shops both in Konavle, in Cavtat and in Dubrovnik.
Locals often refer to the “blue and green” of Konavle due to the mix of colours there. Not to be missed is another tradition: cooking under “peka” which is a large metal bell and meat (often lamb or pork sometimes even fish) is very slowly cooked for hours on the burning embers. Several old farmhouses now work as rustic restaurants where local food and drinks can be enjoyed. In the valley, local brandies of herbs, honey and figs are made together with local wine. Don’t confuse the malvasia white wine from Konavle with the famous malvasia from the Istria region as they are different.
Gruda, Obod, Cilipi, Molunat, Mocici, Popovici are the main villages and it is below the rocks in Popovici that one of the most stunning beaches is hidden. This is Pasjaca Beach, pristine stone and a real hideaway.
Cavtat is possibly the most famous place in Konavle and it is on the coast at the beginning of the region. Located on the Rat peninsula, it has a gorgeous waterfront lined with palm trees and has been described by writers as closely resembling the seafront in Saint Tropez. A handful of good bars and restaurants, a few shops and a great walk along a winding coastal path to the Racic mausoleum on the hill for fantastic views across the bay.
Konavle is a wonderful place to explore and be active. There are excellent walking trails (with or without a guide), horseriding from the Koral stables across olive groves and farmland plus a coastal ride (great views), biking and sometimes visitors can go out fishing with the local fishermen from Molunat. Wine tasting tours happen at most vineyards including sampling of local drinks you may never have tried before!
Konavle is a place to breathe clean air, relax in beautiful countryside, enjoy fresh produce and let time slip by yet with famous Dubrovnik and Cavtat just a short drive away.

Stayed at a beautiful villa in Croatia for 9 days with 3 families. The villa had spacious bedrooms, a lovely terrace, and a refreshing Croatian feel. The host was helpful and even cooked a delicious meal. The location was great for exploring the area.

Location is beautiful, the view is breathtaking, the house is not!
Unfortunately, the posted pictures of this property are not nearly current. The furnishings and decor depicted in these posted pictures are nowhere in this house. There are many things that need repair, updating and simply replaced professionally! The house should have a professional cleaning service prior to any tenants stay! The kitchen is not adequately stocked to prepare any meals nor is there even a working oven to cook. The appliances are extremely outdated! The coffee maker and microwave at the very least should be replaced! The washing machine does not work properly and the dryer is a line outside. The interior hallways & stairwell lights do not work. BUT, the most critical issue on this property is the MAJOR MAJOR issue with the drains and toilets continueous clogging and the horrid smell that began permeating throughout the entire house! We were physically unable to use the ground floor bath/bedroom & the bath/bedroom directly above it because that was the strongest source of the permeating stench from the plumbing issues! You could smell this immediately upon approaching the front steps of the house by day 4!
We contacted the owners on numerous occasions with regards to the plumbing issues and they sent their young son twice with air freshener and the third time their daughter and her fiancé, who did as best he could to fix the issue with no avail. We truly appreciated his efforts! We did not make successful contact with the owners again. We were financially unable to relocate our large group as we would have vacated the property immediately with their inability to repair the problems!
Although the location is beautiful and the view is breathtaking, this house is in need of a PROFESSIONAL contractor, not an inexperienced handyman!

We have just come home from a fantastic holiday in Croatia. We stayed at this lovely villa for 9 days and we were 3 families of 10 people all together, 5 adults and 5 kids. The villa is situated very close to the airport (but not too close) and we were picked up when we arrived, which was a great start to the holiday. We found our host Jadranka and her family to be so helpful and friendly, she even cooked us a delicious typical Croatian meal one evening. The villa itself is situated in the beautiful Konavle valley which is very beautiful and lush, the area is full of cypress and fig trees, the family gave us fresh figs from their tree throughout our stay which was lovely. The kids absolutely adored the swimming pool, and were in it whenever we werent out exploring the area. The gorgeous front terrace was a lovely space to be in and we loved cooking and relaxing around the big table in the evening watching the sunset, or swinging in the hammock reading a book under the shade of the grape vines. The bedrooms were very spacious and there were loads of bathrooms, the villa had an authentic Croatian feel to it, which we loved. We spent some glorious days swimming and snorkelling in the crystal clear waters around the lovely town of Cavtat, and at a great little beach near Popovici village, visiting stunning Dubrovnik and the beautiful little island of Lokrum ( please note there is a charge for adults to get on the island!) We also had a great day going over to Montenegro as the villa is very close to the border, and this is worth a visit (although do leave enough time for this, as crossing the border can take some time) The food everywhere was very good and we enjoyed some great seafood at at Ston and we had a fantastic meal in a local restaurant situated by a river in the beautiful valley that the villa overlooks. Compared to the UK and some other places in Europe we found Croatia to be very reasonable for eating out.You do need a car while staying at this villa, as its probably just a bit too far to walk to places, however we really enjoyed the peace and the calm of the location while being able to drive to lots of interesting places in a short time. We all had the most fantastic holiday and we miss it so much already!

Wonderful villa in tranquil surroundings - most relaxing holiday!
Well equipped and furnished villa in lovely countryside location. Cavtat only a 15 minute drive away and plenty of hidden gems in the countryside around. Bedrooms in the villa all with air conditioning and en suite bathrooms. Lovely terrace to enjoy family meals around the BBQ. Jadranka and family are superb and caring hosts who attend to your every need and make you feel most welcome. A wonderful holiday and holiday home.

Very nice place with the best host ever
We spent 2 weeks in this big house outside Dubrovnik, and had a great holiday. Jadranka and her lovely daughter are the most helpful and nice hosts. They made lunch when we arrived from the airport, arranged everything our big family needed for a comfortable stay in the house and treated us as friends of the family. They even arranged a very nice dinner for us before departure.
The house is big and spacious, and the kids loved the pool in the backyard. You need to rent a car, and from this house you have a short distance to beautiful Cavtat and Dubrovnik, to beaches, Montenegro etc. Jadranka will advice you where to go, and these places are really worth visiting.
We really recommend this house and the lovely host Jadranka :)

Wonderful place, people, weather, villa
Stayed with another two families, 11 altogether. Jadranka is the perfect hostess, picked us up and took us to villa which is about ten minutes drive from Cavtat and fifteen from airport. Villa in rural quiet village. It is spacious, modern but still has a refreshing Croatian feel. Beautiful. The kindly Grandma gave us fresh fruit and veg from her garden nearly every day. This was so special, we loved her and her embroidery which we bought and took home. You need a car if you want to get out and about but the driving is relatively simple. It's a great bade if you want to visit Dubrovnik either by ferry or drive. Also Montenegro border just down the road. Cavtat lovely for evening meals and swims in the sea.
Jadranka also gave us invaluable holiday tips. Totally recommend this 100%.

A very nice place near Dubrovnik airport
We were a group of 8 people (with babies and children) and had a very good holiday in this small and very big villa.
We received a warm and sincere welcome from the owner.
The villa is situated on the heights of Dubrovnik (12 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from Cavtat, 25 minutes from Dubrovnik).
The village is very quiet. The villa is fully equipped : 5 bedrooms with bathroom, a large terrace with a barbecue, a beautiful swimming pool area in the rear part of the house,...
We were fully satisfied with our choice.

The house was really well appointed and everything was new and fresh. The customer service was great the owners could not do enough for us. The airport transfer was so quick and the weather was great. Full marks for this.Mary Goodchild
