Wait, What Am I Looking At?
Yeah, it’s kind of hard to get your mind around it. Visitors intuitively stare a bit, then inevitably walk 360 degrees around the perimeter to take it in. You'll probably spy someone passing by to stop and stare up!
The logic of the place invites curiosity. The layout is intimate and could seem small if not for the mindful intention of the diminished proportions. This is balanced by plentiful and tall windows that make the outside (and the changing light throughout the day) feel like part of the rooms. The natural materials invite every surface to be touched and enjoyed. The rooflines can challenge the eye, and their natural movement inspires contemplation and makes the small footprint feel spacious. The playful chimneys give the home a sense of not taking itself too seriously (it doesn't). The vertical orientation, strange outdoor staircase, and prominent rooftop deck balance the comfort of the interiors by stretching residents a bit out of their comfort zones, displacing both eye body with new visual and spatial experiences. The house looks delightfully unique from itself from every angle and almost like it shouldn't be allowed.
Ok, that’s poetic and all, but tell me about this place!
There are three separate units in the house, each with its own external entrance: the first floor apartment, the second floor apartment, and the studio bedroom in the tower. We rent out all three units and as owners, frequently visit whichever one is open to stay in ourselves. Don't worry, we'll give you your privacy!
Bet sure to climb to the Skydeck in the morning and take a photo of your shadow standing on top of the house as projected below!
Easily accessible from highway 101.
Neighborhood access is primarily by car and there is little foot traffic.
There are Zipcars available in the area (not walkable from the house), as well as Lyft and Uber services.
There is a fast electrical vehicle (EV) charger in downtown Arcata near the central plaza.
If you needed to walk to the airport, you could!
Park in front of the house on the street in front of the front door (Driveway parking is for guests on the Upper Floors only). There is ample street parking all along this generously sized corner lot!
Extended stays are possible - please message regarding your per diem and desired dates!
No TV, but There is excellent internet for steaming with your devices!
Please supervise children and pets at all times around the staircases and SkyDeck.
Lower floors may hear guest footsteps and voices from upper floors.
Please note that if guests are afraid of heights, it may be best to stick to the ground floor accommodations!
None needed, though you may see other guests or friends/family of the owner around - we'll always give you your privacy but also, say hi!

This property is totally unique. The builder has tremendous talent and creativity. We've never seen anything like it. The owner was extremely quick to respond to all of our questions. Her house binder is amazing. There are suggestions about everything - restaurants for every meal, trail info, even samples of redwood! This is a charming place.

Upon entering, visitors will definitely get a nice surprise because not only is the home artistically designed, it is also clean and peaceful. There are these lovely little signs all throughout the house that help visitors identify what is what and what’s in cupboard, etc. The only issue we had was figuring how to get the water, in the shower, to tepid…but hopefully, another sign will help.
Lovely property and I know we will stay there again. Many thanks.

We were in Northern California to hike in the Redwood Forest. This VRBO location was perfect for all of our planned activities. The lovely property is well cared for, with an artistic flair and attention to detail. The check-in/check-out process was simple, and the owners were fantastic communicators. I would stay here again!

Due to a scheduling error on our part, we had the delightful opportunity to check out not just the "Skydeck ZigZag Suite" on the main floor, but also the "Crazy Wave, Cozy Digs" suite on the second. Both locations were a hoot. The location itself is a singular standout - in the midst of squeezed, cookie cutter housing is this eclectic, electric piece of art-as-architecture. The hosts were in frequent contact and immediately accessible, as was the site's manager. Keyless entry works very well (and is sincere about its time frames), the K-cups of coffee are nearly bottomless, and EVERYTHING has a label, as in, "I wonder what is ..." and the drawer is labeled. It is comfortable, it is an eyeful, the view from the top does indeed provide a Pacific peek, and if you look to the north, the airport traffic is close enough to enjoy watching at dusk, but far enough away not to be obtrusive for a good night's sleep. As is the case in this particular phase of the 21st century, you have WiFi access (quick and perky) with the presumption that you're bringing your own tablet for visual stimulation (the "Crazy Wave" floor does have a monitor for compatible systems). The showers are powerful and warmed by a water heater just feet away, and the whole experience is an inspiration for years' worth of home improvement projects on our return. We have found our perfect locus for future visits to Eureka! (say it like you mean it! Eureka!)

I booked 3 nights at the Skydeck ZigZag Suite 1st Floor for a fun weekend. Communication with the host was wonderful, they were so very informative and helpful. The location is in a safe quiet neighborhood very close to the beach and majestic Trinidad. The suite was perfect for 2 and the design is so unique. I will definitely book this suite for my return trip to Humboldt.
