About this house rental
Halehikiola
Aloha, we invite you to stay at our “house of new dawns.”
Halehikiola was named for the refreshing way it evokes the Hawaiian value of Ka la hiki ola each morning as the house fills with light. As “the dawning of a new day,” Ka la hiki ola is the value of promise, optimism, and new beginnings—it invokes our sense of hope. The quiet street we are on, Alaula, is named for another way the Hawaiian language refers to both the light of early dawn, and to the day-glow of sunset before twilight sets in, creating the perfect setting for Halehikiola.
Thus, Halehikiola is a house with a mission: Our goal is to enliven your spirit with hospitality, comfort and invigoration each time you visit the Big Island of Hawai‘i environs of our neighbor, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, and spend time on the East side of the island. Bring a journal to capture your thoughts and transcribe your memories—what we call Sense of Place is exceptionally strong and compelling here.
In respect for the land it dwells on, the house is elevated; it was designed and built to sit atop gentle outcroppings of an ancient lava flow (do take note of the stairways in our photos). Vaulted ceilings reach up through the forest canopy and feature 2 large skylights; Halehikiola feels open yet intimate, comfortably surrounded by the natural wild beauty and cool green foliage of the rainforest. If you’d like to bring the outside in, do feel free to clip the orchids, anthurium, bromeliad torches, forest lilies, gardenia and ginger which may be in bloom; we’ll have a pruner and selection of vases ready for you!
Location: Halehikiola is in Royal Hawaiian Estates, the neighborhood bordered by the ‘Ola‘a Forest Reserve on the slopes of Kilauea. Drive a short 7 minutes to reach the entrance to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, 39 minutes to swim and snorkel Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach, and 39 minutes to Hilo and from the Hilo International Airport. On Sunday mornings, be sure to visit the Cooper Center Farmers Market, just 5 minutes away; Volcano Village is known to locals as “where the artists live,” and small galleries outnumber stores and eating places. During longer stays, take day-trip adventures to the west side of the island: Drive 65 miles to the Maunakea Observatories Visitors Center, 85 miles to the Waikoloa Resort and Mauna Lani Resort coastline, or 99 miles to historic Kailua-Kona. Make your visit here a true get-away and island-wide adventure.
What to pack: Halehikiola is at the 3,700 foot elevation mark, so the nights and early morning hours may rain and can be cold; pack a jacket and clothing you can layer—you will get warm on your adventure hikes—and for the possibility of winter nights that can dip to the 40s. Pack your t-shirts and shorts for everyday wear, hiking shoes for adventures, easy slip-on footwear for the yard and rainforest, and flip-flops (we call ‘em slippas) Grocery and dining in the nearby Volcano Village is limited, so we do recommend you fill your gas tank, and make a stop enroute for the nourishment you might need for your first meal after arrival beyond the water, coffee and tea we provide at the house.

Bedroom on the main floor - King bed
Loft bedroom on the 2nd floor - King bed, 2 Twin beds, smart TV, ensuite bath
Additional bedroom available on the lower level - 2 Queen beds
