Beautiful cottage but terrible experience upon checking out.
Beautiful barn in a beautiful location. Had we not have had the issues we faced after departing, we certainly would have stayed again.
The owner and Sykes Cottages. After leaving the property (in spotless condition), we were informed that the owner wanted to report damages and take our security deposit. The owner uploaded photos of a dent in the fridge, a broken frame (art work) and a cup ring-stain on a bedside table. We did break one glass whilst there, however, we informed the cleaners of this immediately and were more than happy to pay for this. With regard to the other items, we know for absolute certain that the fridge was already dented when we arrived and the frame was already cracked. We noticed both of these things immediately. When we disputed these two things, the owner and Sykes Cottages both immediately withdrew the claims for these items, focusing then on the bedside table. Unfortunately, we are not 100% certain ourselves whether the ring stains were already there (like the other damaged items), or if we did indeed put a cup on the bedside table creating a ring-stain. A pile of books had been placed on the bedside table; we noticed these as soon as we arrived. We are now unsure whether these were covering stains to begin with. Instead of trying to remove the stain or sand down the woodwork, the owner has charged us £350 for TWO bedside tables, claiming that she must buy a matching pair (only one had a ring stain). We did not agree to this and wished to dispute it, but Sykes Cottages took the money out before an agreement had been made, despite us expressing that we did not accept the claims the owner had made. The owner also sent us a string of abrasive messages. We also felt uncomfortable during our stay due to the potential of their being cameras in the home. On our second day, we tried to find an extra duvet and checked some of the cupboards. Shortly after, we received a text message from the owner asking us not to touch the locked cupboards. This could be a coincidence but it seemed very very strange to us.
