About this apartment rental
Summary:
Nestled in the woods just 2 miles from downtown Highlands, our lakefront bungalow offers a secluded getaway that's close to town giving you the best of both worlds. This is a newly constructed space in our exposed basement with windows in every room and new furniture throughout. It features a deck overlooking the lake, a separate side deck, a full kitchen and a master bedroom with a sleep number bed. There is a stacked washer/dryer and the living room and both bedrooms have flat screen TVs.
The Space:
We turned an unfinished exposed basement into a cozy cabin-like Bungalow rich in wood and stone decorations. The original house was built in the 60's so you'll find hints of the old iron pipes and other things of character throughout the space.
Guest Access:
The pull-off parking space for one car pulls right up to the first set of gentle incline stairs going to the landing. The next set of stairs is a traditional incline that goes to the rental area you will be using during your stay.
The Neighborhood:
Mirror Lake is a small lake area only 2 miles from the heart of Highlands. It feeds Lake Sequoyah and the town's water supply. Gas motors are prohibited so it is quiet and the only sound you hear is the waterfall over the dam. It is a quiet friendly community.
Getting Around:
You really need to a vehicle to get around. Taxi service is scarce in Highlands and Uber has not yet found its way up the mountain. One of our neighbors offers car service to and from downtown or nearby towns if you want to try a restaurant in Cashiers or Sapphire and don't want to drive. He also does runs to the airport. Intro available upon request.
Other Things to Note:
Parking is a pull-off on the street by the steps to the front door that can accommodate up to two vehicles. Please avoid parking in the driveway; it is on the opposite side of the house from the entry to the Bungalow.
We are a dog-only friendly property that can host up to 2 furry family members under 60lbs each. (Give or take a doggie pound here and there!)
Each dog will incur a pet fee that covers the additional cleaning needed after each renter to prepare the house for the next visitors. Dogs must be fully vaccinated, medicated for fleas and ticks, house-trained, and well-behaved. Guests should be prepared to provide records of vaccinations and proper pest treatment. Pets are not allowed on the beds or furniture. Please ask if you have any questions or concerns about your family member!
Guests are required to keep dogs out of the lake. You will also need to pick up after their dogs and leave their trash bags inside the trash can, not at the bottom of the trash barrel. Dogs must also not constantly bark while the guest is or is not home.
Guests will be required to take all of their trash from their unit to the bin on the Street throughout their stay. Trash days are Tuesdays and Fridays, early in the morning. Please note that helping ensure the bin faces the street ensures they pick up the trash and a bug-free environment. PLEASE MAKE NOTE: Highlands trash professionals do not empty the trash bin. They manually pick up the bags out of the bin therefore all trash needs to be in a bag. This includes your dog bags.
Guests must notify the hosts if something is broken, not working, or on the way to breaking before the guest leaves the property not to be fined or reported for the damage.
Guests are not allowed to flush ANYTHING down the plumbing that is not the Provided (Charmin) toilet paper. This includes and is not limited to sanitation wipes (EVEN if listed on the packaging that they are safe to flush), G.I. Joe figurines, Hair Ties, Bows, Sand, Dog hair, or cooking grease. If the unit backs up the guest will be responsible for the repair costs.
Gusets are required to clean the grill after each use, including emptying the grease tray, so that the next guests can enjoy it.
These rules might seem funny to read, but they have all happened and resulted in guests having a horrible stay. We aim to ensure that we can all have a fantastic vacation with their family and friends.
We thank you in advance :)
Interaction with Guests:
Depending on the time of year, we may be home while you are staying. If we are we're available for any questions or recommendations. Highlands is a very social community and we always like to meet new and interesting people. If we're there and you want to go out to dinner or enjoy some wine with seasonal locals (that's us) come knock on our door! If we're not there, our neighbor helps us manage the space so he available too.

Basement needs pest control. Killed 6 large spiders, and two insanely huge grasshopper like bugs. We were also unable to get the basement cool enough to have a decent night's sleep. The electric outlet by the master bed does not work. The glass light cover above the bed fell on us while we slept, and the dead bugs that were trapped in it were then on the covers. We had to get up in the middle of the night to clean this, Lastly, there was no wine opener. We had to go back out to purchase one after getting our groceries.

My family of 3 had a wonderful time. The apartment was cute, well appointed and very clean. It is a basement apartment so it’s a little dark but we spent most of our time outside so that wasn’t really an issue for us. Mirror Lake was great for canoeing. The location, on a lake, near Highlands can’t be beat!
The owners stayed in the house above us our entire week long stay. They were very quiet and extremely respectful of our space. Definitely would rent again!

Out stay was very nice. The place is well appointed and well situated for a quiet time, but not too far from town. Enjoyed watching the squirrels gather hickory nuts for winter.

Key code is very difficult. My husband could get it to work after 5 or 6 times. I never could get it to work. Description said bungalow which is a small home. Description wrong it is an apartment several floors under. Too many steps for carrying things down. Too dark. Maybe put in a window over the sofa. Kind of funny I had lights on everywhere because I like light. I put a navy blue top on instead of black. I put a sweater on and didn’t notice till we got away from the house. The parking is not adequate. We didn’t feel it was safe in the tiny spot. On the plus side everything was nice and new. The heating is inadequate. I finally put it up to 78 but we were still chilly. The tv worked great. We still enjoyed our stay.

Nice, clean and quiet. Many steps to navigate from the parking spot to the access door and many to the dock.
Unusually high step to get into the bathtub/shower. It’s a very deep tub and the foundation is raised 2 or 3 inches. This may affect people older or those physical challenged.
The automatic coded lock on the door is difficult to see the numbers until the first number is entered, then it will light up.
Nice dock enabled me to launch my inflatable kayak and enjoy the lake.
Also be aware of the challenging narrow roads which are common in this area. Also, only one parking spot for this lower apartment.
Overall positive stay and the owner was available to answer questions.

We loved the location ; it was quick and easy to get to downtown as well as to the falls , hikes, etc.
The home is just adorable! Cozy and yet open living area. Comfy bed in master suite.
Hopefully we will get back up there soon!

Very well laid out and comfortable. The description is accurate, the check-in was very smooth, and online manual is very clear. This was an excellent alternative to the local hotels.

Clean and cozy. Five minutes from town and 20 min to an hour from other locations near by. We visited Lake Toxaway, Cashier’s, Cherokee and one day we even drove 2 hrs to Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Cades Cove.
