About this house rental
A quiet street in the Collachio of Birgu, former headquarters of the Knights of St. John, is the setting for 11 TRIQ IL LBIC, a historic townhouse that rises from its medieval cellars to a 21st century roof terrace that features a pool, views of the sea and Valletta skyline. You enter the imposing hall under a ceiling mosaic of the night sky by Count Jonathan Bauman. At ground floor are two twin bedrooms with en suites, one accessed from the hall and the other from a courtyard/atrium at the rear, that rises the full height of the house, flooding all levels with natural light. To the left is a laundry room with washing machine and twin bowled ceramic sink. A grand staircase leads to the first floor which has two double rooms, separated by a small library. Both have en-suites and wrought iron balconies overlooking the street. All bedrooms have wardrobes and generous storage space for suitcases etc. The walls of all bedrooms display paintings and drawings by John and Hilary Hoyland , Rosemary Wentges and other family members. Art Deco Murano chandeliers add a colourful touch of luxury to the high, airy ceilings.
The 2nd floor features a generous living room, decorated in shades of grey with comfortable contemporary furniture and colour notes added by paintings and prints, many again by John and Hilary Hoyland.
Adjoining the living room is a well equipped modern kitchen, with a large 5-ring gas stove, microwave, upright fridge and freezer, and twin bowl sink. A glass dining table with wood-framed, clear polycarbonate chairs complete the picture. Glazed doors open on to a glass floored loggia terrace over the courtyard below, ideal for al fresco breakfast or an evening aperitif. A living room balcony overlooks the the street below and the surrounding area.
The baroque dome of St. Lawrence's church is framed by the bullseye in the door to the roof, which opens onto expansive terraces , enclosed by a colonnaded pergola and featuring a Travertine edged pool. All around are views of the Three Cities, the Kalkara waterfront and Valetta skyline, with the Grand Harbour in between and the open sea beyond. Much of this Baroque panorama is floodlit at night, and firework displays, so much a part of the myriad parochial 'Festas', frequently illuminate the night skies over the islands. A canopy shades a dining area that seats up eight people for al fresco meals. The kitchen is easily accessible on the floor below.
The house has been refurbished using and local craftspeople and traditional materials. The house is environmentally friendly with a low carbon footprint. Water is heated by solar panels. The living room, kitchen and all bedrooms have locally controlled air-conditioning .
Due to its height and number of staircases No 11 Triq il Lbic is not suitable for the physically disabled or wheelchair users. For the able-bodied, the stairs provide good aerobic exercise, with the added reward of stunning views and the prospect of cool dip at the top!

This house is everything it purports to be and is a perfect base for exploring Birgu, Valletta and the surrounding towns. The photos give a very accurate description of the property, but it is hard to capture how lovely the neighborhood is. In the heart of the Crusader area, the buildings breathe history and, then at the end of the day you come back to a perfect blend of old and new. The owner and the property manager were outstanding in their contacts and we truly loved our stay. Since it was over 90 F every day we used the rooftop pool two and three times daily and it was BLISS! The well-equipped kitchen and speedy WiFi were not surprising considering the overall quality of the property. Thank you, Richard and Julian!

This property is exactly as shown and was spotless. We visited in April so slightly before the craziest tourist crush, but it was still a relief to escape the cruise ship madness of Valletta. The location may not be for everyone. Although it is a very short walk from the property to the gondola ferry, the ferries are not scheduled especially in the off season. Early and late trips to Valletta are a fairly long uber. We used Uber more than we expected to because the supposedly dependable buses eluded us. We walked back from the Hypogeum which was fine. We wished we had discovered two restaurants near the American University sooner - DATE (art cafe) and France M'en Bon. These were easy walks. We liked the Malta at War Museum and thought it was actually better than the Lascaris War Rooms, but the later is a must visit because of location. Strongly recommend the Archeology Museum before you visit the Hypogeum and strongly recommend the later. The great things about the apartment/house is how easy it was to book, how real the location is, and how incredibly responsive the owner Richard was to every inquiry. It made our first trip to Malta quite wonderful. Thank you. p.s. the beds are very firm which we love!

We thoroughly reccomend this property! Incredible location in Birgu, like travelling back in time but with all the mod cons you need. Metres from a charming little piazza, close to the waterfront restaurant's and to roam the back streets and alleys after dinner is a sublime experience. Thanks Richard, you made our stay a real memory. Peter

We were a group of six friends and had a wonderful week in Birgu. It was delightful staying in the pallazzetto which was in the old quarter of the city. There was plenty of room for all of us and we enjoyed many evenings sitting on the roof terrace. We had a memorable holiday in Malta.

Fantastic location and a great size property for a group of friends! Loved the plunge pool too! Everything close by for us and a great trip - so many friendly people too

A fabulous property in an excellent location.
We loved days around the house, on the roof then strolls around the town.
The property, in my opinion, is even better than the description portrays.
City view, sea view, you can see the top of the cruise ships in the harbour.
The bells from the churches during celebrations are fantastic. Canons, fireworks, flags. The locals put so much into the celebrations which can be two or three a week is amazing.
You get a great understanding of Maltese life from a stay in Birgu at this fabulous property.

A beautiful property in a beautiful location. The home is spread over 4 levels, so not really suitable for anyone who may have difficulty climbing up and down stairs all day. Every bedroom has been fitted with an aircon unit as well as the living room, which is a necessity in summer. There is also a decent size plunge pool on the rooftop that was a lifesaver in the heat. The rooftop was also great for watching the fireworks in the evening. Vittoriosa Square is just down the laneway with plenty of local places to eat, and just a quick ferry away from Valletta. We were a large group that had no problems getting around Malta from this location and exploring all the local laneways, we especially enjoyed the more authentic experience away from the main tourist area. We all loved everything about our stay in this property and wished we were there longer.

The home was every bit as wonderful as it looks in the photos. Have never stayed in such a beautiful house - it was a pleasure! Had everything in the home we could need, and made use of the small pool for refreshing 'chilly' dips each morning (it is May) but expect it would be invaluable in the summer. Great spot just over the water from Valetta - just a short ferry ride over, but Birgu itself was beautiful and there were pubs and fine restaurants right outside our door. Quiet area with pretty narrow streets and traditional buildings. Buses excellent - visited M'dina - an absolute must - but I would skip Bugibba next time!

An absolutely amazing property in a location that was close to restaurants, harbour and a short boat trip to the capital

This is a lovely property that has been well maintained. It is well equipped and the roof top pool with view if lovely. The area is fantastic, close to the grand harbour sites and restaurants. Communication with the host is prompt and courteous. My criticism would be the heat. There is an air-conditioning icon on the website which, while this is described as natural airflow, I feel is misleading. There is air-conditioning installed in the property, but this is not turned on for guests. We did have a very disturbed first night due to the heat, and to be honest no night was a good nights sleep. I would not go to Malta again in August and stay in a property without electric air-conditioning.

We loved staying in the Birgu apartment, it was absolutely beautiful and in such a great area away from all of the hustle and bustle of Valletta. It was beautifully furnished and we loved the roof area with the pool. Richard was so friendly and helpful to deal with. The only issue was the heat as it was stiflingly hot when trying to sleep even with fans but understand that it was particularly hot this year and air con has now been installed for future guests which will make it absolutely perfect. Would definitely recommend staying here, amazing experience.

We really enjoyed our stay in this amazing house. The property is across 4 floors so you will get a workout from the stairs, which none of us minded at all but if you have mobility issues this is definitely not the house for you. There was everything we needed at the house and you don't need to rent a car if you don't want to. We used the ecabs app to get around and visited the beach, valetta and silema. We also used ecabs to take a trip to the supermarket. The pool was great to cool down and the views from the rooftop were amazing. Would definitely like to return again one day.

We had a really lovely stay at Richards wonderful house in early August. The house was located in the very heart of historic Birgu with easy access to all local amenities, was beautifully furnished and equipped - just right for our family needs. The roof top terrace and plunge pool was a definite highlight. Thanks so much for your kind attention and hospitality Richard, we would thoroughly recommend your lovely home to anyone!

Don't hesitate, just book this property!
We spent 5 glorious days in this house. The other reviews descrbe the house really well, so I won't reiterate what they have said. What they didn't convey is that it's not just somewhere to stay. Staying here is actually 'an experience '.
From the moment you open the door it is a feast for the senses. It is absolutely beautiful and you can see that it was created with love and a wonderful eye for detail. We really felt so lucky to be there. Our best advice would be to book this amazing house if you are lucky enough to get the chance.
Richard is an excellent host, easy to contact and friendly and patient and always quick to answer queries.
Apart from the house itself, Birgu is a really special place. Every turn of the head reveals a beautiful view of the sea, a lovely old balcony, a beautiful church or old building. It is full of history and is at the heart of the fascinating history of Malta. It is well worth spending time visiting the museums and exhibitions and the Church of St. Lorenzo.
Even if you cannot stay at this wonderful house, you should still try to stay in Birgu. It is an absolutely stunningly lovely place. You will experience local Maltese life here, eating and drinking side by side with the locals in the lovely old square and the old streets off it, watching as they attend Mass or sit chatting in the shade. Nowhere else have we seen such an authentic version of Malta, while only a short walk away is the beautiful waterfront where you can see yachts and even super yachts from around the world.
There are lovely places to eat on the waterfront and around the square near the townhouse.
All in all it is a wonderful base for exploring Malta at it's best, while staying in a home to which you will long to return.

Authentic period townhouse
From arrival in the lane to walking through the four floors to the rooftop pool, dining area and sundeck, the property looked and felt better than the photos we'd seen. Richard happened to be in Birgu, and came to meet us soon after we arrived. The house is spacious, well appointed and decorated and had everything we needed. The pool on the roof was a definite hit as we visited Malta in 30-40 degree temperatures with little respite from the wind! Richard is installing air-conditioning which will be a great addition, as even with fans in most rooms and windows open, it was stifflingly warm.

Absolutely perfect
I really cannot fault our stay in Richard's property. It is a magnificent building; an old townhouse in the old city of Birgu, renovated beautifully with tasteful, chic decoration. Over 4 floors, with a bathroom to each double/twin room (sleeps 8 adults VERY comfortably), juliette balconies throughout, fully equipped kitchen, extremely private and the pièce de résistance; the roof terrace with panoramic views and a lovely cold plunge pool (bigger than a plunge pool but not big enough to swim lengths, great to cool off and splash around). Our September visit was scorching hot so the house was the perfect place to relax in the peak heat of the day. We were there over indepence day and watched the fireworks from our rooftop! It felt like a private showing over Valletta and the sea.
Location: It's close to a few nice little cafes and restaurants in the square. There's a few nice places to eat on the waterfront in Birgu, we recommend Enchante across the water. You can get the little ferry over to Valletta; which was about a 20 minute stroll from the apartment and then 15 minutes on the ferry over to Valletta. Very frequent. There are a few little shops for snacks and beers etc. The one we found to be open most frequently was just up the road from the pharmacy on the corner, and has most things you might need.
Richard and his team were magnificent, communication was friendly and prompt. They brought us a spare iron within the hour of us requesting it! They even called us post checkout as one of our guests had left something and arranged for us to go back. Honestly couldn't fault it. We're already thinking about when we can go back!
Thank you Richard!

Birgu, fabulous home
The property is nicely tucked away along a passageway off the main square in Birgu.
Each of the 4 en suite bedrooms on the ground and 1st floor are spacious enough, comfortable and include fans if needed.
The kitchen and living room on the 3rd floor are fabulously appointed and the covered dining terrace with glass floor provides a touch of decadence.
The icing on the cake is of course the roof top terrace, with pool, seating and lounging areas.
Thoroughly enjoyed the stay, great location and hope to return.

Our family holiday here was all bliss. This home is beautiful, a treat for the senses: homely and comfortable living spaces adorned with interesting artworks, the pool on the roof provided relief from the heat, exhilarating views of the city and immersion in its culture: fireworks, sonic reverberations and homing pigeons, the ensuites in every bedroom made ease of eight adults being together. Access to Valletta was easy with the little water taxis ever at the ready and the nearby restaurants and cafes were excellent. Not a bad word to be said. Thank you for sharing your home with us Richard!

From start to finish we had a fantastic holiday. We arrived on a weekend of festivities in Birgu with marching bands and fireworks. We were met promptly and shown round the house. The house was equipped with everything you would ever need and had so much space. The rooftop pool is definitely needed as the weather was extremely hot. The location of the property was great. Birgu has lots of history which is easy to explore on foot. We were able to visit Valletta via a short ferry trip and access the local beaches (which are fantastic for snorkeling) with a quick taxi trip. Overall we had a fantastic trip and I would definitely recommend this property.

This house and it’s location was so magical for 6 of us us (grandparents parents and two young children) . I couldn’t believe I had picked it! RICHARDS house is spacious 4 bedrooms with shower and toilet in every bedroom which was so helpful. Wonderful wide noiseless staircase to the top where thankfully a plunge pool awaited! The house has been wonderfully restored and decorated to suit the surrounds so warm and comfortable. We didn’t cook but the kitchen is really big the fridge huge and has everything. We loved being right near the famous square where time stands still. The flags the church bells the fireworks! I was pinching myself. Wonderful little gondola boats a short walk away to take you to Valetta but I loved Birgu so much I didn’t want to leave. If you like history and wandering down beautiful alleyways this house is set in the perfect spot. It was hot but fans were doing the job. We lived on the topTerrace looking out to the sea. If you read Richard the architect and owners description it’s exactly as he says. I could have stayed forever! Thanks RichardKyeen Grivas27 August 2019

Beautiful house in perfect spot
Very attractive old stone house in a great neighbourhood. So pleased to be based here and not in bustling Valletta, although very easy and pleasant to get there by water taxi. Lots of good restaurants and many attractions locally. Met by Jules at check in and all pretty seamless and house well presented, although maybe the photos make it look slightly more luxe than it is. That said it is very comfortable and well equipped. The roof top terrace with plunge pool is a god send - maybe not such a good idea to visit Malta in August but was the only time all our party could manage! Views from the top very interesting too. En suites are fairly tiny but still great for each couple to have their own bathroom. It took us several days to find the guest loo which we thought was just a cupboard on the stairs! We all had a great time and would thoroughly recommend it.

Fabulous location
We had a wonderful stay - the townhouse was well appointed and super clean. Richard, and the property manager Julian, were wonderful to work with and responded quickly to any questions we had. What a bonus the plunge pool on the rooftop patio was during our stay in the summer heat!

Stunning home in beautiful part of city
Jules was waiting for us as our taxi up and took us the short walk to the property.
The house is stunning with beautiful original features, stylish decor and a well fitted kitchen.
We found everything beyond our expectations.
We found Birgu the perfect spot to stay for the restaurants in the evening and the short ferry ride across to Velleta.
We are grateful for the use of your home and certainly plan a return stay.

Lovely town house in historic Birgu
We spent a week in this house in May 2019 and really enjoyed it. The house itself is gorgeous with all the amenities you need. The art work and furnishings were very tasteful and unique. We particularly liked the roof top area where you could watch the boats and cruise ships coming and going. The surrounding area had plenty of great places to eat. We ate in the courtyard area of Bebirgu in Victory Square and really enjoyed the food. Valletta was easy to get to using the water taxi which was a great way to see the harbour. We felt very at home in this lovely house and would definitely recommend it to others.

Beautiful surroundings
The house is very special and full of character and original features. Yet it is also equipped with all the modern facilities you will need. We love Birgu, the area is charming, we feel safe whilst walking around with our children. There are many churches and museums to discover in walking distance. This was our third visit to Birgu, second stay in Richard’s house. We have definitely fallen in love with the house and Malta!
Thank you for a lovely stay. Hope to be back again.

Beautiful house, perfect location, loved this special place.
This beautiful house surpassed all our expectations. The space was creatively structured -particularly the multi-floored atrium - and the styling was wonderful, from the original artwork to the fantastic flora. Every moment in this house was an absolute joy.
Due to the multiple storeys and en-suites it is the perfect space for couples holidaying together or, in our case, a large family.
We did visit Valletta, very quick, cheap and easy with the ferry boat, but enjoyed exploring Birgu the most, wandering the back streets and enjoying the beauty of the architecture and the sunny weather.
We loved the tiny shop in the square that sold everything, and felt we were in a residential rather than tourist area. The locals were friendly and welcoming.
We highly recommend the restaurant Tal-Petut, a minute's walk from the property. Had the most incredible selection of antipasti (mostly vegetarian) with dips, oils, bread and more, all freshly made and locally sourced. Charming waiters and food we'll remember for a long time.
Thanks, Richard, for accommodating us and enabling us to enjoy the best part of Malta!

A beautifully restored property situated in a stunning location.
My wife and I stayed in Richard’s artfully restored house throughout the month of December and early January. We had a most delightful time and within a day had settled in so well it felt like home. That’s the thing about the house really, it has a very relaxing atmosphere whilst feeling rather grand at the same time.
We had friends and family staying with us from time to time and there was ample room for all. None of them wanted to leave really as they fell in love with the house too.
The bedroom accommodation over the first two floors were a delight, each one having a uniquely different feel from the others and all had en-suite facilities.
The kitchen/living/dining area is superb and has everything you could possibly need. It was light and airy by day whilst feeling snug and cosy at night.
The rooftop terrace (where we spent quite a lot of time) is a fantastic area to relax and soak up the rays. It offers up so many views of the island and the waters roundabout that time ticks away unnoticed.
Birgu and it’s immediate neighbourhood is utterly beguiling with narrow intricate streets, alleyways and pathways. At every turn there is a something that will stop you in your tracks, fantastic churches, the citadel walls, amazing houses or the views over rooftops.
Everyone is friendly and if you take the time are more than willing to talk and are very informative about the area. We found a good butcher just up the lane, a nice bakery in Kalkara (daily walk through the city walls), a pharmacy down the lane and other provisions from just over the square.
We have visited Malta a few times before but even so we still spent some time visiting different areas and travelling all over island. We have come to the conclusion that Birgu is the hidden gem and well worth discovering providing you are not averse to walking.
Richard and his dog are very friendly. He was there to meet us, helped us up with our luggage, gave us a tour of the property and even gave me a lift the next day to go and pick up a hire car.
“Take the time to visit the cemetery you passed on the way from the airport” he says one morning over a coffee.
He was right.
Make the time, no matter how short your stay!
Cheers Richard all the best.

Wow, what a fantastic property!
Four couples stayed in Richard's property at the beginning of November and it had absolutely everything we needed. It's a stunning place which has been lovingly and carefully renovated, to include ornaments and artwork which give it a real "homely" feel.
Vittoriosa and the surrounding area is stunning with so much history and fantastic restaurants on your doorstep. There were very few tourists in the area during our stay which was lovely and we really felt like we were "living with the locals"!
The location is great and it is very easy and quick to get Valetta by water taxi.
We had wonderful stay and wouldn't hesitate in returning in the future.

Beautiful Birgu warm-hearted locals
8 friends met in Birgu to visit Malta and we made the perfect choice to stay in Richards home. If you are visiting Malta to indulge in the amazing history Birgu or Valletta is the place. Richards home was a surprising delight. The fully renovated 4 story 4 bedroom home was perfect. The eclectic furnishings were delightful and the rooftop pool was a godsend for the very warm 6 day stay. The home is centrality located to the waterfront to catch a ferry to Valletta or a hop on bus to discover Malta. There are many dining options around Vittoriosa Square and we can highly recommend D Centre restaurant at our doorstep. Communication was easy. Richard is very prompt to reply and his home has everything to make your stay a home away from home. Highly recommend. Highlight was the local people - so very helpful and friendly and love a chat!
