Wern-y-Cwm Farm is a huge historic farmstead dating from the 16th century. It was the home of Captain Thomas James, who sailed to discover the North West Passage in the reign of King Charles I, funded by the Bristol Society of Merchant Venturers. It remains a private home but has been converted into a cluster of well spread out holiday lets, a sporting or business retreat centre with very private gardens and facilities to each property. The 30 acres of stunning farmland are bordering the Skirrid Mountain National Park, with fields and hedgerows teaming with wildflowers and wildlife. A new communal Natural Swimming Pond and gardens including a grass amphitheatre are currently being added and will be ready for use from Summer 2024.
The properties may be rented individually for private family or friends get-togethers or in any combination for a larger sporting or business retreat or celebration week end. The image descriptions will explain which property is which.
The Farmhouse is ideal for a large family or friends group across the comfortable 7 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, with an occupancy level of 17 or up to 23 using extra pull-out or z-beds.
The Cider House has 3 bedrooms (1 is tiny) and 2 bathrooms and is perfect for a couple or a small family, with an occupancy level of 5, but it can accommodate up to 7 with a pull-out bed and the top bunk.
The Dairy is well spread out and has 6 bedrooms, with an occupancy level of 12 adults or up 16 with children on pull-out or z-beds.
The three properties surround The Great Barn with glorious entertainment space, and together they can sleep a total of 34 - 46 people across the 16 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms.
The Banqueting Barn is ideal as entertainment space for a yoga or sporting retreat, company bonding sessions, family parties or friends’ gatherings. It is let alongside The Farmhouse at an additional fee (NB. this website cannot calculate this for you).
This seriously impressive, historic, eco-heated entertaining space has a WC block, catering facilities and bar as well as two huge terraces, stunning gardens, a double swing, fire pits and incredible views.
There is so much to do on the farm or in the area. It is a short walk through the fields to reach the top mountain - you can be on top of the world with views over six counties in 35 minutes. Abergavenny is just a few minutes drive, and so are many of the best pubs, castles, historic sites and outdoor activity centres of the Brecon Beacons National Park (or Bannau Brycheiniog).
THE FARMHOUSE:
The farmhouse has a huge country kitchen/dining room with under floor heating beneath the flagstones, ensuring the house is cosy all year round. This is the perfect house to celebrate a milestone event, hold your business or yoga retreat or spend time with family and friends. Snuggle up in front of the fires in the sitting room or kitchen, watch a Netflix movie or the big game in the Sky cinema TV room, play table tennis, chat around the warm Aga or dance the night away in the disco den; there is plenty of room for everyone with lots of indoor or outdoor activities; making it a great space for use all year round.
Carefully thought out bedrooms each with their own theme offer flexible accommodation. Four of the bedrooms have zip-link super king beds which convert into two single beds. There are 5 ‘master’ doubles with en-suites, 1 bedroom has a private bathroom across the corridor and a further room links to one of the en-suites if required or could use the family bathroom. The farmhouse has an occupancy level of 17, with the option for 5 more in pull-out or Z-beds, accommodating a maximum of 23.
With its terraces and 'infinity lawn' sweeping down to an orchard, footie goal and dug-in 12’ trampoline, the farmhouse is ideal for outdoor dining and BBQ's seating up to 30 on the terraces. Explore beyond the orchard into the Deep Dark Wood to find a den where some children love to play all week end, often making their own den next to the ones we have set up.
Walks, cycling, visiting castles and fine dining less than a mile away at the famous Michelin Star Walnut Tree Inn - all contribute towards making a fabulous landmark birthday weekend, company bonding trip, yoga retreat or active multi-generational family holiday. The luxurious large hot tub is available on request at an extra charge.
THE CIDER HOUSE:
If you need a little extra space and need 10 bedrooms or to sleep up to 30 guests, The Cider House has an occupancy of 5 plus 2 extras in a top bunk and pull-out bed. It is available for an extra charge (nb. the web site can't calculate this for you).
With a stunning master bedroom with open plan en-suite shower room and freestanding bath. A double bedroom with a super-king zip-link bed which converts to 2 singles (plus a pull out bed), and a very small single room with extra bunk above share a tiny shower room.
The ground floor has a comfy sitting room and kitchen, with wood burning stove and underfloor heating. This house is comfortable for 5 adults but we will permit up to 7 if necessary. Please ask for the price (with this website listing cannot calculate).
THE DAIRY:
If you are looking to accommodate over 30 guests, booking The Dairy with The Farmhouse will suit you.
The Dairy offers 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. With an occupancy level of 12, we will accept extra children, up to a maximum of 16 using pull-out and z-beds.
The extensive gardens include a wooded area, lawns and a barn games room with full sized table tennis, games, BBQ, outdoor fridge and there is a hot tub at an extra charge.
Taking the three properties there is an occupancy level of 34 over the 16 bedrooms, or up to 46 (using pull-out or z-beds).
NB: Minimum bookings are for 3 night weekends, 4 nights over bank holidays, 5 nights over New Year and generally 7 nights at Christmas but we may be able to overlook these rules for last minute bookings.
The price listed on this site is for The Farmhouse, the price of The Great Barn, The Cider House or The Dairy are not included here, we will quote separately on enquiry. Details of The Dairy may be found in our separate listing on VRBO, but we don’t advertise The Cider House separately on this site. Please enquire for further details.
The properties may be booked individually, or as a whole. The Great Barn may only be booked if you are also taking The Farmhouse.
If of interest we can send you links to numerous amazing local food producers, and we offer an electric car charging point (by pre-booking at a small charge), so that you may enjoy a truly low carbon holiday or retreat.
Nb. We regret the farm is not wheelchair friendly due to the slopes.

Thank you for making our Christmas so special. The big house was fantastic. Full of charm and beautifully decorated. Loved the size of all bedrooms and private bathrooms for everyone. And the barn is a sensational party space. Could not recommend it more.

We had a really wonderful time together as the house can accommodate every age comfortably.
The kitchen dining area is large so can house everyone cooking playing and sitting g around.
Altogether a fantastic home.
The garden forest area is gorgeous. We played croquet a lot which kept most everyone entertained for hours. There are some pretty walks from the house.
Most of all the view from the house and garden are stunning.
Altogether a fabulous weekend!!!

Had a long weekend in two of the properties.
The location is fabulous with uninterrupted views of the beautiful countryside.
The houses are furnished to a high standard and the facilities were impeccable.
We were also lucky with the weather!.

We had the best weekend at Wern-Y-Cwm for our family and friends hen do. The photos of the Farmhouse and grounds don’t do it justice, it really is a beautiful place. We made use of all the Farmhouse rooms, disco den and garden for our activities. The Barn was an extra special addition and we managed to keep it a surprise for the Bride to be which worked perfectly. It was a fab weekend for all ages, thank you to Emily and Laura!

Great space and house to get together with friends and all their families. Lots to do. Lots of space. Bigger than the photos show. Super helpful before check in.

The Farmhouse was warm and welcoming in a fantastic rural location! It was easy access to Abergavenny with all its amenities.
The farmhouse had a well equipped kitchen including an Aga. The layout and facilities of the Farmhouse suited our family very well!
On the negative side, having paid well over Seven Thousand Pounds ,it was a kick in the teeth to be charged extra for logs, dogs and the 18th guest! Especially as the 18th guest was one year old and not provided with a cot, high chair or towel?
We also had problems with the electricity during our stay!
On the first occasion ( Christmas Eve, just as we were about to serve Dinner ) We thought it was a general power cut, when we realized it was only the farmhouse it took about 40 minutes to sort out the problem! On subsequent occasions we were able to reset it in about 10 minutes.
Being plunged into total darkness was not only very annoying, but could also have had serious safety consequences!
Suggestions for small improvements would be:
1. A set of sparkling wine glasses for celebrations
2. Serving spoons for the dinning room
3. Glass water jugs and vases for the dinning room
4. A set of cooks knives in the kitchen
5. Each guest given a hand towel to supplement the bath towel
6. Improved exterior lighting on the Farmhouse
( one of the family had a nasty fall on the steps near the gate ,in the dark )
Despite the niggles, The family had a very enjoyable Christmas and celebrations at Wern y Cwm Farmhouse
and were able to explore the amazing local area with its great walks and History

We had a big group of friends here for the weekend and had a brilliant time. The house was lovely with excellent facilities, the hot tub was great and the garden and views were stunning. Would highly recommend it.

I stayed at this house with a group of 6 families; all well educated with multiple post graduate degrees, well travelled and have had numerous stay cations and holidays. Never in our history of travel have we ever encountered such rudeness from our host.
To keep the review fair I have listed the key pros and cons of staying here.
Positives:
Good size house, ample parking, fair location in terms of scenic environment and access to main roads.
Drawbacks:
Host: I had to chase to get communication on arrival instructions, no clear instructions on where items are kept (e.g. iron, cleaning equipment) and no contact number so only communication method was via email. Checkout is at 10am, I enquired for late checkout (due to having small children to prevent having to rush) and the host advised this was not possible due to cleaners arriving straight after we leave. However, there were no cleaners since the host emailed me after 9pm on the day we departed. Her email was rude and full of lies, she was suggesting we had "trashed" the house and apparently left the hot tub in a "broken" and "disgusting" state. Everything was in working order when we left the property, we had placed all but few small bits of rubbish in the bins (for which by the way she left limited black bags) and there was the usual mess you would expect the cleaners to clean (bedsheets, towels, some food crumbs in the kitchen etc). After checkout, the host was repeatedly emailing with multiple lies which I eventually just ignored.
House: In terms of the house itself, whilst it is of a good size it is structurally dated and everything creaks (floors, doors, beds!). There are no locks on the doors and they are very thin walls and floors thus disturbing kids trying to sleep with the slightest of noise. Furthermore, the power cut downstairs on 3 occasions, once whilst we were cooking which was a nuisance and an inconvenience.
Location: to get to the house you have to drive half a mile along a very narrow road, fortunately we weren't faced with oncoming traffic however if we did then one of the cars would have to reverse back which would be a nightmare. When exploring the local area we were also faced with racism.
To summarise, I would not recommend staying here. Whilst the drawbacks of the house and location can be managed, the rude host has impacted my mental wellbeing and I would not want anyone else to be put through the post checkout traumatic experience.

The house was in a beautiful setting. Immaculately clean and the rooms were really spacious! Well equipped for a big family to all dine together. We had plenty of room in the bedrooms even with z-beds set up. The jacuzzi was a lovely feature with the gorgeous view.

We stayed here for 3 nights over easter and can honestly say the house and location was breath taking!
On arrival the house was immaculately cleaned with everything you need for a thoroughly enjoyable stay. I can't recommend this place enough, we will most definitely be looking at returning next year!!

Our group of 17 could not have been more happy with our stay at the one-of-a-kind Werny-Y-Cwm Farmhouse. The home was impeccable in every way--super clean and beautifully decorated. The hosts were very helpful with my many questions while arranging the booking from the U.S., and accessible when we needed to call with a last-minute request after check-in.
The hosts provide lots of information about the operations of the home itself and also about things to do in the surrounding area.
The hot tub was a special treated we much enjoyed!
I would not hesitate to stay here again.
Thank you for the memories!

I can’t even put in to words the incredible time we had at this house. The house itself is beautiful and the location is breathtaking. We went for a birthday celebration and all had an amazing time. We are even talking about planning a summer visit next year. The disco den was a great bonus and we had the most amazing fancy dress party in here. I also can’t recommend The Hunters Moon Inn enough where we had Sunday lunch, all so accommodating and the food was delicious. Book this property ASAP!!
2.5
Brilliant weekend away with friends for a 40th birthday celebration. Great space for the kids to run around, a brilliant kitchen for dinners, lots of games/films provided. Perfect weekend.

Would 100% recommend this venue. The views are absolutely breathtaking, the facilities are amazing, the house is beautiful and super clean throughout. We wish we could have stayed longer.

POSITIVES
Large rooms
Large kitchen
Peaceful rural location
Adequate parking
NEGATIVES
Too expensive for what is provided
No housekeeping
No TVs in the bedrooms apart from one.
Not ideal for teenagers and we had 8 who were frustrated by the weak WiFi signal and scramble for one tv with limited channels.
Hot tub could be appropriate to the number of guests- the inflatable one seemed like an after-thought.
Most of the bedrooms lacked good ventilation, the nights were hot and sweaty with no provision of mechanical ventilation like fan or air conditioner.
Too many don’ts- had to dispose glass bottles ourselves, clean up after ourselves etc
Had power cut for a whole day and told to plan a day trip with no form of compensation.
Check-out was meant to be at 10am but the gardener was mowing the lawn by 8am.
2.5
The property was even better than description and photos. We had dinner in main barn which is amazing. The location is idyllic and wonderful views. Everyone commented on how lovely the house was. Will come again.

Thanks so much for having us. A glorious location for a UK holiday

Easy check in process. Clean and tidy property, perfect for all ages.
