About the House:

Constructed in the 1880’s, this house was designed by and became the personal home of Danish architect CE Burden famous for this and several other historic residences in Washington. The house stands elegantly facing Providence Park on a lovely street that is a few blocks from EVERYTHING!

This home was superbly renovated in early 2018. The renovation included all new top-shelf appliances in the kitchen and laundry room, 4 bathrooms, new windows, fresh paint and refinished floors. The house is replete with beautiful architectural details such as artisanal tile, 12-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, pocket doors, sky light, exposed brick walls, 4 decorative only fireplaces, en suite bathrooms, and elegant built-ins. The house has lots of natural light, AC, Wi-Fi, shaded back patio with grill, and lovely patio with outdoor dining space.

Kids love the parks; tourists love its proximity to the National Mall filled with museums, monuments, shops, and other sights; sports fans like to walk to baseball and soccer stadiums and bars; lobbyist and appointees like its proximity to the Capitol and House offices. We like best that it is a tree-covered neighborhood with excellent schools and a small town feel that is walkable to absolutely everything.

The Set-Up:

The house comfortably sleeps 7 in 3 bedrooms; each with their own en suite bathroom.

- 1st bedroom is the Master bedroom (third level). It has a queen size bed, fireplace, built in armoires, attached laundry, master bathroom, and wonderful view of the park.

- 2nd guest bedroom (third level) has a queen size bed, ample closet, custom built ins, en suite bathroom and view of the patio.

- 3rd guest bedroom (second level) sleeps three with a full-size bed, single bunk up top, 2 ample closets, en suite bathroom and view of the patio.

Living Room (second level) has large fireplace, lovely built-ins, and a magnificent view of the park.

First floor has an eat-in chef's kitchen with 6-burner gas stove, convection oven, top-of-the-line appliances, and gas fireplace with Spanish tile on those chilly winter mornings. The kitchen connects through French doors to a tree covered patio on one side and a separate dining room on the other --great for entertaining.

There is a full garage with an additional refrigerator, park chairs, and car parking.

Safety:

Due to the number of parks, proximity to the US Capitol, and the number of congressmen, senators & political appointees who nearby, this area is protected by no less than 4 different security agencies: US Capitol Police, US Park Police, the DC Police and the secret service.

About Us:

We love this neighborhood’s parks, great school a block away, its accessibility to everything coupled with the quietness of the block. No matter where we have lived or traveled, this is our favorite place to be. If you are a Foreign Service, military or other government family, we aim to be a soft-landing for families transitioning in or out of Washington, for change of station, training, medevac, or vacation.

Our Preferred Rental:

Our preference is for longer-term stays, ideally a month or more that accommodate families in transition. We accommodate shorter rentals, but really aim for this house to be a temporary home, a safe and soft landing for families moving to the area, transitioning from overseas, families on medevac, or government TDY. Contact me directly to discuss the rental.

The Neighborhood:
About the Neighborhood:

Capitol Hill is the largest historic residential neighborhood in Washington D.C., stretching easterly in front of the United States Capitol along wide avenues. It is one of the oldest residential communities in Washington D.C.

As a geographic feature, Capitol Hill rises near the center of the District of Columbia and its neighborhood extends eastward. The Capitol Hill neighborhood today straddles two quadrants of the city, Southeast and Northeast, and a large portion is now designated as the Capitol Hill historic district. The name Capitol Hill is often used to refer to both the historic district and to the larger neighborhood around it.

The main non-residential corridor of Capitol Hill is Pennsylvania Avenue, a lively commercial street with shops, restaurants and bars. Eastern Market is an 1873 public market on 7th Street SE, where vendors sell fresh meat and produce in indoor stalls and at outdoor farmers' stands. It is also the site of an outdoor flea market every weekend.

The advantage of this property is that it is in an excellent location with many parks nearby and walking distance to many attractions. Evaluating our stay I must warn future visitors that the on-site parking is difficult and should be more clearly explained. There is a garage behind the property which is accessed through an alleyway. I confirmed this prior to my stay and was told that a compact car could fit into the garage. A compact car can fit into the garage however it is very tight with inches to spare. Use of the garage was not explained appropriately by the managing agent and given this we were unable to park in the garage our first night there and had to park in a paid lot nearby. We were told that the garage door opener was the way to access the garage and the garage door opener did not work. There was a way to access the garage through the garden in the back of the unit. However, the door to the garage is old and in poor shape and it was difficult to access the garage through that door. The property is a townhome and there are three floors so if one is not comfortable climbing up and downstairs often during their stay then perhaps this is not for them.

Property served as an excellent Hill base camp for exploring DC. Walkable to grocery store, playgrounds, parks, museums, metro, Mall, Pennsylvania Ave. Well-equipped kitchen allowed for some “home” cooking. The price is high, considering the condition of the house, though it’s not in poor shape. Had a great weekend.

My family and I loved this property. The hosts were friendly, informative, and accurate about this home. The location was within walking distance of the Smithsonian and many other sites that we were interested in visiting. Our group had 2 couples and 2 children. Having 3 1/2 baths available and the bunk room for the kids was perfect. All accommodations were beautiful, and the kitchen was great. The unit was also very clean. My grandson also left his stuffed animal, and the hosts and cleaning personnel were amazing and mailed "him" back to our home. Do not hesitate to book this home for a wonderful D/C vacation.

Property is in a wonderful location with many amenities, our family was very comfortable. The fact that we booked through VRBO but were unable to communicate through VRBO was very frustrating. We tried to reference the amenities prior to packing but couldn’t find the property details. We found out the day before that a permit was needed for parking on the street. It would be nice to have this information along with property details once the rental is confirmed.

I’m not familiar with older homes, but the floor and stairs were so squeaky that you couldn’t leave your room until everyone was up or risk waking everyone. Some light bulbs were burned out. The bedside lamp was not plugged in and couldn’t have reached the outlet. Seems like 2 days of maintenance would have made for a much better stay.

Four siblings met in D.C. to celebrate a brother's milestone birthday. We chose this spot for its location (Capitol Hill) but there's so much more to recommend it than just that. It's a historic townhouse with character and comfort. We arrived a few hours before official check-in, but the management company adjusted the access code so we could enter early and leave our bags, which was a huge help. The first night we were all tired and the living space was so inviting that we decided to order in rather than go out to dinner! Official check out was 10 am but, again, the management company adjusted the code so we could leave our luggage in the place for a few more hours while we were sightseeing before heading to the airport. Flexibility like this really made a difference to us, allowing us to focus on the "good stuff" rather than scramble to store our luggage somewhere.

First off communication with the property manager was excellent. Everything happened exactly as expected from needing to know that the second door had the lock to ease of entering the property the property speaks for itself. The photographs don’t do it justice in terms of cleanliness. It was the cleanest property. I think we’ve stayed in. It was clear that it was sanitized before, we arrived. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable with great beds. This place is great for families. It allows folks to spread out as well as come together. We were out and about a lot, but this would be a great place to head to the eastern market buy some fresh fruits and vegetables and cook there at the house , the kitchen is well stocked and the seating arrangements are perfect for families. We really had a great time and this is certainly the place we would stay if and when we are ever back in the DC area the parks across the street we’re also beautiful I don’t know if there’s a better place in DC to stay.
