About this cottage rental
Chime Cottage is a charming, period property ( circa 1670 AD).
Pet Friendly with Free WiFi, BT TV & Netflix
*Brand new modern bathroom installed 2024*
Situated in Bradwell village, this cottage represents the peace and relaxation that you associate with Village Life. Typically stone built exterior with solid oak original beams running throughout the lounge, kitchen/dining area and upstairs bedroom, together with the inglenook fireplace, form the perfect image of 17th Century Middle England.
Once inside, you will notice that the stone sink and and utility area is hewn from the bedrock, on which the cottage is built. The well equipped kitchen provides ample storage and there are sufficient place settings for up to 4/6 people. Although it is a working kitchen, sorry, there is no dishwasher! The kitchen leads to a small wash place containing a washing machine and combi-boiler, which provides constant instant hot water. Onward from the wash place is the little charming outside courtyard, with high stone walls and hanging garden.
The ground floor is completed by a small, cosy lounge complete with Inglenook fireplace and a wood burning stove. Once inside the lounge there is a 3-seater sofa-bed for occasional use and a matching armchair. Guests often comment that when they light the wood burner stove, they don't ever want to move!! However, that would be a big mistake, as there is lots to see and do beyond the walls of the cottage - both in the village and beyond. There is also a newly installed (2024) modern bathroom, with combination bath/shower & toilet.
Up the wooden staircase - which is rather steep - to the first floor landing you will find twin beds in a light, charming space, suitable for any age, but not for privacy as the main bedroom is located through the landing area. A family with children or a same gender group would be most suited to these sleeping arrangements.
The main bedroom has a double bed with luxury foam mattress, and convenient drawer units and nearby power sockets. Two windows provide dual aspect across the village and towards the hills beyond.
This character cottage also offers a taste of the present day with central heating, BT powered Smart TV and Wi-fi.
Out the front door and to the left is a small hill and left again takes you to the garage and its forecourt - where we politely ask you to park your car - abundant with potted plants (depending on the season). Here you will find a tiny gated arch which leads to the little terrace garden, typical of the cottages in this region. Many gardens are situated nearby, rather than within the grounds of the residence!
Depending on the season, here you can relax with a glass of wine overlooking the distant hills.
When you decide to venture beyond the cottage you can go down the main hill to the village. Here you will find the Post Office, which is the centre of the community, providing all the usual newspapers (and some unusual ones!), cards, etc. and a friendly conversation. There is a newly renovated CO-OP supermarket for your provisions, a beauticians, hairdressers, a Fish and Chip shop, a bakery and a Doctors' surgery!
There are two play parks - both well equipped - a chapel, a church and four pubs!! One of which is only 100 m/yards away.
Nearby villages include Castleton. Its name is the clue! Peveril Castle is situated high above the village and is well worth the treck for magnificent views!! Castleton has a wonderful array of tiny souvenir shops selling the famous 'Blue John stone' from the region's mines and many places to indulge yourself with cream teas and beverages, plus pubs serving full menus.
This is also the location of the famous Blue John Mine, Treak Cliff Cavern, Peak Cavern and the subterranean river cave, Speedwell Cavern. All these magnificent caverns are open to the public and have guided tours.
Hope village is en-rote to Castleton and is a favourite of walkers and visitors to its annual show, sheep-dog trials and car boot sales.
Travelling East you find Hathersage, the burial place of 'Little John' of Robin Hood fame. The closest City is Sheffield and can easily be reached, as can all of the above mentioned villages, either by car or bus, which stop in the centre of Bradwell!
From Manchester Airport it's approximately 1 hour 30 minutes by car. A car is strongly advised to make the most of this fascinating part of the world.
Well-dressing is a craft, unique to the area. This requires teams of villagers drawing, 'puddling' and petalling a themed picture using only natural resources to make up the completed pressed into a bed of clay. When it is complete it is mounted on a prominent site in each village. All the wells are different and some villages have more than one ( Bradwell has four!). This takes place during June through to September in Peak District villages.
A little further afield you will discover the villages of Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock and many other villages of outstanding beauty, offering unique shopping opportunities and even cable car rides. Among these is the famous 'plague' village, Eyam, which is the only known village outside London to conract the Black plague. The plaques on the cottage doors tell the horrific stories of the passing of the 17th Century occupants! The museum tells the whole story.
Walkers will enjoy the fabulous network of public footpaths, sites of historic digs, and guided walking trips around the Peaks.
Chatsworth House is the residence of the Duchess of Devonshire, with many connections to The Royal Family. The house and gardens are open to the public all year round with the exception of a couple of weeks during the Christmas period. There is an adventure playground and a wonderful prize- winning Farm Shop. It is approximately 20 minutes by car from Bradwell.
The cottage has a fairly comprehensive collection of maps, walks and information booklets about the Peak District and all the amazing activities and opportunities to investigate the area.
If there is anything else we can help with, please don’t hesitate to let us know!
Many thanks
Alex

Lovely stay, quiet area, easy to access the popular walks, parking was a bit tight and tricky but manageable.

Very lovely cottage in small, quiet Bradwell. A warm welcome. Very friendly neighbours, nice pub a few metres down the road. We felt at home and would have loved to stay longer. Parking is available but a bit tricky, very steep roads and narrow bends - the smaller the car, the better!

Charming cottage in a lovely village. Beautiful scenery. Good equipment for self catering. Selection of board games and cosy lounge room. Suits a small family. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Very cute cottage - little bit chilly even in June (British weather!) but lovely wood burner if needed.

We had a cosy week in the cottage. Everything was as described. The cottage is perfect for a little family and has everything you need. It is situated in a nice little village with a coop supermarket, playgrounds and pubs nearby, where you can get by foot (for sportive people, the hill is very steep). There is lots to discover and activities within only a short cardrive - so much we couldn‘t do everything we wanted as the vacation was simply too short!
Our questions were answered quite fast and we even got a new highchair for our child, thanks for that! As we had arrived at the cottage we were kindly asked whether everything was fine and the neighboors offered help and were very attentive and friendly.
We had a wonderful yet too short time at lovely chime cottage and would highly recommend staying there!

Lovely cottage with everything you need and more. Plenty of wood for the burner, clear instructions/info and a much appreciated generous welcoming basket. Second time at the Chime already looking forward to the third.

My family stayed at the cottage for three nights while on holiday. It's a great location in the quiet village of Bradwell and ideal for exploring the Peak District. We were welcomed with a gift of biscuits and Christmas crackers and were delighted that there was a Christmas tree. The accommodations are perfect for a family and we appreciated that there was plenty of firewood on hand. The Shoulder of Mutton pub is in easy walking distance if you want a bite to eat. All in all, we were very happy with our visit.

Lovely, cute and cosy property. Great location for exploring, we love Bradwell, I’m originally from the area and can highly recommend it (and the cottage) for being a brilliant base for hiking, exploring the lovely villages of the Peak District and getting to Sheffield. Friendly people, a great pub down the hill and a warm and comfortable property to come back to. Just what me and my husband needed for a short break.

Totally loved our stay in Chime Cottage. It was warm, clean and full of character of which you would expect from visiting the Peak District. Our hosts made us feel welcome with a treat of chocolates, wine and shortbread biscuits……thank you very much!!
The log burner had plenty of wood and coal to keep us going for our stay and there was clear instructions for heating and tv.
Definitely will book again 👍

I really love this house and have stayed twice now - calm, good facilities, great location, lovely shower, relaxed owner, parking but perfect for walking routes. I had an issue with the vrbo website this weekend meaning I couldn’t contact the host but this was really my only issue.
I definitely hope to stay here again!

The cottage was ok however :-
The carpet in the kitchen was dirty ,stained and yuk !
The shower over the bath had a curtain - not hygienic we felt so we couldn’t shower .
Rubbish not cleared from back so couldn’t sit out.
Kitchen sink wasn’t pleasant to use.
Felt the cottage needed a degree of refurbishment .

We enjoyed our stay in Chimes Cottage. Unfortunately the weather wasn't overly kind to us and we had a very wet walk! The cottage, however, was a lovely cosy base to have.
Yes, the roads are narrow and steep. Yes, the cottage is small and yes, the parking is a bit challenging (especially when a van pretty much blocked us in)
But if you like a character cottage then this is definitely the place for you. The place was spotless, the bedding lovely, the beds mainly comfy (the main bed is a small double and one of the singles was a little uncomfortable). There were lovely touches, like the welcome goodies left for us. All in all a very pleasant stay.

We felt very comfortable! A lovely flat in a very quiet location with everything you need. The best thing is the stove in the living room - very cosy especially on rainy days. All necessary shopping facilities in the village including a small bakery with delicious cakes, pies ...... Nice helpful service if needed - thank you very much!

My husband, myself and our Cockapoo had a lovely weekend break in this gorgeous cottage.
Great location for a weekend of walking, drinking and eating. Three local pubs were all very nice and within walking distance.
Everybody we met was friendly and welcoming.
Cottage had everything you need and was very comfortable. We are definitely going to return in winter so we can light the log burner!!
Loved our stay. Thanks

We (2 adults, 2 teen girls & a maltipoo) enjoyed a lovely 2 night stay in Chime Cottage. The booking was easy & the details (& directions) regarding the stay were fantastic. It was our first time visiting Bradwell, it was a super friendly village & all the locals were happy to suggest & recommend places to eat & drink. We particularly enjoyed the short walk to the White Hart Inn for drinks & advise to book for the Shoulder of Mutton pub if you wish to eat. The lovely couple at the local bakery have just started to make delicious fresh pizzas in the evenings, which we can recommend. The cottage was close to Castleton, which is a great day out & was stunning in the sunshine. Many thanks to the host(s) for a very relaxing country break xxx

Property was clean, well equipped and well located for Castleton, where we spent most of our time. There is a well stocked Co-Op in the village and fish and chip shop only 5 minute walk from the cottage. Beds were comfy, lots of hot water and the fire was an added bonus. The parking space was a bit tight but we found a space in the road opposite the cottage so it was fine. Thoroughly enjoyable stay. Thank you!

We wanted a long weekend hiking and wild swimming. Chimes cottage is the perfect starting point because it is in the middel of the Peak District. The cottage was so lovely and quaint. We had everything we needed and the info book explained it all. The only thing (and this has not been a problem for me at all!!!) is the slow WIFI.
If you have youngsters that are stuck to their phones they will have a problem as the WIFI is slow and sometimes cuts out completely. But really, I think it was just perfect...

We had a wonderful time at this very quirky, comfortable and cosy cottage. It had everything we needed and we felt relaxed and recharged on leaving. Perfect base to explore this beautiful part of the world. Alex was the perfect host and neighbours were very friendly . Thank you

We enjoyed a stay as friends in rustic cottage over a very cold March weekend. It took a while to warm up but did with the fire eventually. Quite a few things in the kitchen cupboards needed a wash before using, but otherwise it was clean and comfortable. Nice walk over to Castleton and handy having the Coop just down the hill. (Advise saying if you need the sofa bed made up as we couldn't find a duvet for it)

Just spent an amazing Christmas here with my husband and our dog, Oliver.
The log burner is totally amazing and the cottage is very homely and welcoming...we all loved it and will definitely be coming back.
The host is very helpful and replies to any messages in less than 20 mins, even over Christmas.
Thank you so much for a lovely and very relaxing Christmas x

We had a lovely November weekend away at this place. Nice hot bath, and lovely fireside coziness. Bed very comfortable and nice decor throughout. Parking is a bit tight for our car so we just parked on a nearby road and dropped things off at the cottage. There’s parking on all the streets around, they’re just narrow roads so you have to pick and choose a bit. Otherwise really enjoyed our stay.

The cottage was characterful and homely with a brilliant Woodburn stove which was needed this weekend. The main bed was wonderfully comfortable - slept like a log!! And the location was perfect for lots of walks in the peak district. Would definitely come back. Thank you

We enjoyed our stay here at Chime Cottage but encountered several issues, which rather spoilt the stay. The owner was fabulous at fixing these issues, and instantly offered a partial refund for our inconvenience. Whilst dogs can stay, I would suggest that, with very limited outdoor space, the cottage isn't particularly dog friendly.

The perfect, quiet-yet-lively town for a peaceful Peak getaway. Chime Cottage was a wonderful home base for the many peaceful walks and outings in the area. Walk or take a short bus ride to surrounding towns and sites, or walk down the street to the White Hart for quiz night and a pint. Come home to the cottage to relax by the fireplace on a chilly evening. That really took the cake for our little group of friends! Can't wait to be back in Bradwell.

Lovely cosy cottage in the heart of a sweet village. Excellent launch point for some great walking. We received a very warm welcome at The Bowling Green Inn, lovely Indian food in the next village (the Curry Cabin). Great communication from the property owner too ahead of the stay. Perfect for 3 of us walkers. All good!!!
