About this cottage rental

Sausage Cottage has been lovingly restored over the past 20 years and provides characterful, comfortable accommodation and a pretty garden. There are great walks from the door. The village of Oakford has a lovely pub serving good food (with rooms) called The Red Lion, a large church and a playground with swings and a football pitch. The cottage and adjoined barn boast two sitting rooms, one downstairs with wood fire, stereo and large CD collection. the other upstairs with Smart TV , DVD player/Xbox and DVD selection. The 2 double bedrooms in the cottage share a large bathroom, whilst the two double barn bedrooms are en suite (lower barn has shower/sink/loo. Upper barn has sink/loo). All bedrooms have excellent beds are we often told how comfortable they are. Two wood burners and storage heaters will keep you warm in winter and the well equipped kitchen and lower barn both have underfloor heating. A brand new conservatory offers a light and spacious dining area. Wifi throughout. There are several good walks from the cottage or on nearby Exmoor National Park where you can see wild horses and deer. The north Devon surfing beaches are 35 mins drive away. There are nearby freshwater fishing ponds too. Shopping for antiques, clothes, books and homewares in nearby Dulverton can lead to a great lunch at Woods Restaurant or the Bridge Inn. For a special occasion The Masons Arms in Knowstone is a 13th century Michelin star pub and restaurant.

Lots of sleeping accommodation but limited seating in the lounge.
Lots of sleeping accommodation but limited seating in the lounge.
Firstly thank you for refunding the deposit of £200. The cottage was certainly spacious although but we did find it rather cluttered with too much furniture and effects and to be greeted with second-hand food (an egg, some garlic, opened bottles of dressings and jam in the fridge, as well as an opened packet of (out of date) biscuits was a little off putting. Whilst the 2 fridges were useful, the freezer was so full of food there was no room for anything of ours or to be available to make ice for drinks etc. The small bin for waste food in the kitchen had not been emptied and contained remnants of food. The seating upstairs was very uncomfortable and certainly not sufficient for the 5 adults in our party with someone having to sit on the floor at all times. Had there been 9 people staying there is no way they all could have sat in the same room. The lighting was a bit of a mystery with a number of light bulbs not working, and the lack of plug sockets was evident by the adapters used, which we were concerned may have constituted an overload. Storage space was a premium with little or no hanging space available. Cupboard doors didn’t seem to shut properly, and we couldn’t find a vacuum cleaner so were unable to clean through as we would normally do on departure. I appreciate it is one of the facts of life living in a rural area, but as we were unable to close the window in the locked room on the top floor, we suffered daily visits from numerous flies and wasps. The main issue we had though was the accumulation of refuse left outside the front. The kitchen recycling bin had bags in suggesting it hadn’t been emptied for some time, and the two black plastic dustbins were full of refuse sacks inside and two inches of foul smelling liquid which when I emptied them made the job very unpleasant. The contents of the recycling boxes were all mixed up and overflowing on arrival, and this again made it unpleasant for me when I sorted it into the correct boxes ready for the refuse/recycling collection on the 22nd. By day of the collection we had generated only 1 black sack plus a few plastic and glass bottles, but I left out 5 black sacks of refuse and the 3 boxes of recycling. It appeared that there had been no collection of refuse/recycling for quite some time. Overall though it was a good location to stay and Debbie was very helpful calling us back immediately when we had the inevitable questions from not reading the clear instructions left for us.

Lovely cottage - I say cottage but inside it is a tardis. There were only the two of us so loads of room but able to take a large party due to the number of bedrooms. Enjoyed our stay very much. Very quiet village and nice neighbours :)
